I was hesitant to try this location based on the reviews I had seen, but being an Elite Yelper, I owe it to my viewers to at least try and give them my honest experience. I ordered to go and the staff was friendly with the small time I spent interacting with them. The establishment smells great when you walk in. I ordered a half rack of ribs, the pulled pork and their bacon cheese burger. The ribs had a nice smoke flavor to it, but the fat was not fully rendered down so sit was a bit chewy. The pulled pork was a bit on the dry side and needed some sauce to help rehydrate it. The coleslaw and potato salad along with the cornbread were actually the highlight of the meal. The burger was was good too and hd no complaints about that. I am sure to get the true BBQ experience you need to eat-in, but I was not as impressed with them as I have with some of their competitors. read more

Definitely a local pub joint with someone who really likes to do BBQ. The outdoor vibe is pretty nice, and I guess these guys travel a bit for catering or festivals and stuff like that. Ribs were very moist and soft meat with a good smoked flavor. Rub on them was pretty good, not so much a spice rub though more of a sweet rub. Hardly any fat on the rib meat or at least if there was it melted into the meat so easy it was barely noticeable. That being said ... I don't know what these were, the meat was almost like a soft sponge texture, it lacked that fleshy meat texture and it was almost like this was like plant based meat or something. I believe it is meat but when you go to eat this stuff and it doesn't feel like the thing you've eaten at tons of other places it raises flags. Just strange. Brisket was sliced but not so much a "thin" cut. Texture reminded me more of a corned beef (which most briskets do but this one in particular). Pretty bland taste for a Brisket though, no real pow of flavor from the meat or the rub but it was still okay. Fat melted really good though but even the fat didn't have much flavor, for me anyway. Mac and Cheese was Excellent! Very creamy, great white cheddar flavor, some saltine cracker crumbles as a topping, probably some of the better mac and cheese I've tried. The only bad thing is that you can't beat a good baked Mac and Cheese. This boiled pasta with cheese sauce feels weird all the time. BUT! As far as boiled pasta cheese sauce mac and cheese goes, this is excellent. Dirty Rice was ... not dirty at all. No flavor, didn't even look like it had an attempt at flavoring, very dry too. Did not enjoy Baked Beans didn't look like much in the bowl but they tasted Great! Very traditional New England style apple brown sugar glazey bean sauce. Little bit of a zing to it too, I don't want to say citrus like but I can't put my finger on it. I'd get again. Cornbread is difficult to judge. On one hand everyone likes a nice sweet cornbread that sticks together and doesn't fall apart and tastes like it was brushed with butter with every bite. On the other hand we have the old fashion cornbread that crumbles like crazy and not much sweetness to it but there's something cool about how authentic it is. I don't know if I can say that this place was "trying" to be crazy old fashion authentic but that's what the cornbread to me was like. Crumbly, kind bitter, bits of grain seeds, no sweetness, yet kinda nostalgic. Maybe they were having a weird day and the cornbread is usually a jiffy mix or something. But all in all it was interesting and confusing BBQ. I enjoyed a bit of it and didn't enjoy a bit of it for reasons not typical of a BBQ joint. The big thing that's tipping me onto the negative is that the place doesn't feel like it's embracing the BBQ as much as it's embracing the pub vibe. Mike and his wife Robin did a pig roast and mobile bar for us and I can't say enough about them. The venue was terrible and they rolled with it like champions. The smoker smelled amazing, and the food was awesome! My wife is critic and still talks about your coleslaw. If you are looking for someone to cater your event definitely give them a call! This was my first time trying this place. I have to admit it was pretty enjoyable. Tonight they had a pig roast for $10. We had no idea what that consisted of, but we figured...hey, why not! This building used to be Margaritas Restaurant/Bar. I had spent many, many days in my younger years here. This meant I was very familiar with the inside of the building. Opening the doors today...I was blown away. NOTHING is the same.its a very open lay out and very bright. WOW! Overall, once the shock and awe wore off, the main dining room is actually pretty blah now. It is setup to look Alabama country. This entails long picnic tables and a few booths. The lights have tin cans upside down for lamp shades and some TV's. Of course a few little nick-knacks...but that's it... Blah!!! I did not enter the bar area, but the outside seating looks ok. My only issue is the side if the building they had to put it on. Your eating outside in a parking lot facing a dieing mall with cars zooming by way to fast. Hmmm.... no thank you. The food itself was good. We were one of two other couples in the entire place and it took almost a half hour to get our food. Normally this would be ok, but they have already cooked the pig, corn bread, beans and salad. Our waitress was nothing special either. She came over in the middle of eating and asked if we wanted our check and if my partner needed a box. BTW....My partner was Midway bringing food to her mouth. HOW RUDE! The corn bread was AHHHHH-MAZE-BALLS! The beans tasted like canned bushes baked beans. The pork was dry but after adding their yummy BBQ sauce was very good. I thought the coleslaw was gross,but my partner loved it. Just proves, to each their own... Lastly...I ordered a side of pasta salad. After I read the description I HAD to have it. Umm... It came in a teeny tiny side dish. It was very good and totally fine...I guess it was a "true" side dish.....BUT it was $3.00. Elbow macaroni, Italian dressing, a pinch of green pepper and a pinch of tomato.... That's like.... Omg.... 1000% mark up! Overall it's worth trying! I must admit that even before we arrived I anticipated a just "okay" meal... as I am aware of and have been lucky enough to experience what they can do with BBQ in states like TX, KY & TN. I (and everyone in our group) were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. The Mac and cheese was amazing. I don't know what kind of cheese they use but it was as good if not better than my grandmothers and that's saying a lot. I had the 1/4 chicken and pulled pork. The chicken was cooked perfect with just enough Smokey flavor to it. The pulled pork was good as well (no major wow factory but it was moist & had a good flavor) Their sauces are decent as well. The prices are pretty standard for a smoke house & I do think you get a decent bang for your buck. The ribs looked amazing and were very meaty & the person who ordered them has no complaints. I hadn't gotten a chance to eat at their food truck before they opened this location. Let's start with the cons: *I think they didn't anticipate being SO FULL just a week and a half after opening, so staff was not enough to cover all the patrons and was very slow. *bartender was probably inexperienced because the drink was all liquor (not terrible I suppose!) Pros: *food was delicious *everything is made from scratch, including a few sauces *the waitstaff we did get attention from was very nice. One of the owner/cooks (I assume?) was waiting tables, as was the hostess. Everyone was working hard! My husband and I were looking for someone to cater a barbecue this fall. The Pit was close by and the prices were reasonable, so we went on a scouting mission. We each had the sliders, so we could try a sample of the pulled pork, pulled chicken and brisket. We also tried a sampling of sides - cornbread, mac and cheese, cole slaw, baked beans, dirty rice and potato salad. The barbecue meats came "dry," so that you could add one or more of a variety of sauces to it yourself. Skip right over the ketchup and go for the zesty Creamy Chipotle, the sweet and tangy Mustard or the richly flavored Bourbon BBQ. The house BBQ sauce was also good, if you enjoy that smoky barbecue flavor. The meats were really super tender, lean and flavorful. I really only used a small amount of sauce, since the meat flavor stood just fine on its own. My favorites in order were the chicken, pork and brisket (which comes in tender chunks/slices), but my husband liked the brisket a little better than the pork. I was worried that the little sliders wouldn't be enough food, but we were actually unable to finish it all (I had mine without the buns, since I'm gluten intolerant). Perhaps the reason we couldn't finish the meat was because we were chowing down on the delicious sides! My husband was raving so much about the mac and cheese that I tried a tiny bit to see what all the fuss was about - he wasn't kidding. Very creamy, buttery and a touch sweet with a flavor that we couldn't quite place but which tasted just like "home." We weren't that crazy about the cole slaw, which was pretty ordinary next to the other sides, but the dirty rice was an unexpected favorite with me, seasoned with ground meat and spices, though it was a little dry. The potato salad had bits of green pepper in it, despite my asking and being assured that it didn't (I'm allergic). The beans were really good, tender and sweet, without that "crunch" that sometimes comes with home-baked beans. We both liked the cornbread very much; though I prefer a crumblier, drier cornbread in general, my husband loved the soft, cakey moistness. The flavor was really good regardless of the texture. YES, we decided to book The BBQ Pit to cater our party. To top it off the staff was very friendly (the young waitress apologizing profusely and often for a late-coming beer - only one other person in the dining room was old enough to pull a tap and she was visibly busy serving folks at the bar), price was reasonable ($37 for two orders of 3 sliders, 5 sides and two drinks), parking was easy and the place was spacious, bright and just as you'd expect a BBQ joint to be. Absolutely one of the best BBQ places i have been to. It was almost like I was back on Vergina on vacation.

I was in the mood for brisket and remembered this place was down the road. So off I went with a co-worker for lunch. I ordered the #4; Ribs and Brisket. Along with a side of green beans and collard greens. Sipped iced tea while waiting for my order. The tea was real good. The collard greens were great. Ribs were OK. The cornbread was good, not dry at all. The brisket on the other hand tasted like pot roast. I was very disappointed. Maybe it was an off day? I might try them again. But I'm in no hurry. read more

I so wanted to like this restaurant. First, the service - server was sweet but pretty un-helpful. We asked for recommendations and she was essentially useless. We were waiting for almost 50 minutes from the time we ordered before we received our food, and the place was not close to busy. For this, there's really no excuse. Pulled pork sandwich was like shredded pork mush - okay flavor but texture was like it had been processed in a Cuisinart. The six sauces that were brought as condiments were good flavors and did add to the experience. The brisket side was reasonably good but not terribly remarkable. The cornbread was sweet and quite good - and probably the best single item on our table. Disappointed and not likely to return soon. In my opinion, there's far better barbeque in Auburn. read more

I got the meat sampler, and ordered two vegetable sides, and a glass of water. I think it was about $30. The food came quickly, and it looked pretty good, except for the canned green beans. Any restaurant that serves canned vegetables does not rate highly on my list. The coleslaw was not my favorite. It had a strong, sour, horseradish heavy taste that was overwhelming. The brisket was moist and tender, but had no barbecue color or flavor whatsoever. The pulled pork was moist, but chewy and also had no barbecue flavor, just tomato based barbecue sauce. No bark, no smoke. The chicken was very tough, and dry. Making dark meat chicken that tough, I was surprised. The ribs were probably the best thing on the plate, but they did not come off the bones. It all could have done with more smoke, and more cook time. Lastly, the cornbread. It was soggy and broke apart and stuck to my fingers. I have only eaten there once, but what I had, I could never recommend. I didn't like it at all. read more

This was our first time here and we definitely found ourselves a new "spot" that we will come to on about a monthly basis. I had the pulled chicken, mashed potstoes, mac and cheese and dirty rice. The only thing I didn't really care for was the dirty rice but my husband really liked it. He had ribs and pulled chicken, potato salad, rice, and we finished off with the banana pudding. I have been smoking on my own for 20 years and am a bit of a "snob". Mom lives real close and I took her for lunch. Tried the 2 hardest to smoke. Ribs really good, but the brisket is off the hook. I have tried Bucks in Freeport and Riverview in Augusta. To me they are on par with I do. But the Pit? I bow to the Pit for sure and so should Bucks and Riverview. Found this place online today when I was visiting the area and would definitely go back. I had the pulled which was excellent! I got Mac & cheese as a side, even though it's not a listed side on the menu. It was really good but on the saltier side. I think I would see if they could put a little less cheese on it if I went back as it was very Rich but delicious. My husband got the ribs and pulled pork combo. I wanted so much to like this place. the amount of food you got was good,.but..the ribs had a propane taste to them, the pulled pork and pulled chicken were too mushy, should be shredded meat not baby mush, corn bread really too sweet , fries are fresh and ok, mesquite sauce is awesome, green beans yummy, dirty rice too dry and no flavor. I enjoyed the bama burger was good on taste, but could have used chopped onions inside for more flavor. The fries had no seasoning to them; was hoping for some spices. The brisket sandwich lacked a hickory smoked bbq sauce. The macaroni and cheese lacked cheese and it was dry; had to add butter and salt and pepper for flavoring. Visited the bbq pit twice once in january then gave it another chance in june. The food is good but for the price portions are small. Service need to step up our 1st visit we got our entries before our drinks think the waitress forgot my husband dinner was conpletely wrong and wasn't even something on the menu they took his away and i had to eat my dinner in front of him while he waited for them to fix their mistake. Our second visit the waitress came to the table to take our order after we already decided what we wanted just to tell us no we could only order off the lunch menu. This is something customer should be told before hand also there was not a note on the menu that said lunch menu only till 4p. My husband tried to order an add on side and was told he couldn't by the waitress. The lunch menu items only come with one side and not enough to fill your belly. I was really excited to see a new BBQ place in Lewiston and so we had to try it. Never have I been so disappointed in a dining experience. Service was mediocre at best. To begin with, the side salads came out with the main course and yellow wilted lettuce and things only got worse from there. We ordered the rib and pulled chicken combo with a side order of brisket. I'm a huge fan of ribs and these things were inedible. They were so undercooked that only the very ends could be eaten. The brisket was a tough, flavorless, slab of fat that had to be drenched in BBQ sauce to even attempt to eat it. The pulled chicken was ok but really nothing worth writing home about. Even the sides were not very good, the baked beans had a shiny layer of grease over the top. To conclude our meal I received a check for $64 for two drinks and the inedible garbage they are calling BBQ. Nearly all of the food was still on the table and the waitress asked how our meal was and if we wanted to go boxes! I expressed my disappointment in the food but no offer to comp any of it was given so we payed for an entire meal we ate barley any of and ordered a pizza on the way home. Do not waste your time on the BBQ pit if your experience is anything like ours you will leave hungry and dissatisfied. read more

We really wanted to love this place. We LOVE small local businesses and good local food, but this was beyond dismal. The service is terrible and this is coming from two people in the service industry, who are extremely understanding. With tables sitting open all over the room we were passed by waitresses 12 times while waiting almost 10 minutes to be seated. We were put at a wobbly table in the worst place possible, where we were run into by staff and patrons as the came and went to the kitchen and bathroom. Sweet tea was okay and brought/ refilled promptly, but it took another 15 minutes for one of the 6 waitresses to finally take our order with all the personality of a rock. Then the real waiting began... the waitress refused to even make eye contact and blew us off when half an hour later we asked her to check on our meal. 38 minutes later we were approached by the owner who wanted to know how the meal had been. Ha! What meal! At this point we were given a bunch of excuses and told it was being plated. 10 minutes later we had to ask for it to be packed to go, as we had to leave and the food still hadn't left the kitchen. I realize we should have just left, but we were hungry. The check was delivered and sure run quick! It wasn't cheap, but reasonable if the service and food had been on point. And we continued to wait. The owner finally delivered our togo bag and verbally offered a discount if we come back - meh. Once home we realized they didn't even give us the whole order we paid for. Well, if you've read to this point, I might as well tell you the cornbread, slaw and green beans were the best part! The sauces were homemade and excellent. The rest however, was pretty sad. The ribs were dry, tough and bland. The pulled pork was tasty, but pureed mush. The brisket was soggy, stringy, 50% gooey fat and bland. The chicken was the best protein, smokey, moist and fall off the bone. I'd love to review the fries, but we didn't get any. I don't know if we can stomach giving this place a second chance.
