Updating my review to include a few more lunch items! A friend and I stopped by on a Saturday for lunch and booked a reservation in advance. They were pretty short-staffed when I arrived - I noticed quite a few patrons lining up before a staff member helped them get their seats. We had a bit of a wait as well. The restaurant looked the same - spacious with a variety of seating options and a cute bar in the corner. Once we were seated we were excited to order! We opted to share a few items: the savory scallion waffle, the shrimp toast, and the Vietnamese beef dip. The waffle was as delicious as I remembered - the savory butter paired SO well and is such a unique taste! The shrimp toast came out next - I loved how crunchy it was and how cleanly they baked the shrimp into the toast! The candied nuts were such a nice pairing. And lastly, the beef dip. I was surprised to see a sandwich (I'm not sure what exactly I was expecting after reading the description) but I truly enjoyed the thin slices of the beef, and dipping it in the sauce was divine. The bread just soaked it up and it was so flavorful! We wanted to get dessert before we ordered, but were glad we held off after the sheer volume of food! Friendly and passionate about the food staff served us. We got there for happy hour and got 3 things, then two entrees. I admit they get creative with the food and I sense the Asian and everything fusion, but I'm also left a little confused. Cheeseburger Fried Rice did indeed taste like a Big Mac as our waiter said, but it was served with a slice of what looked like simple craft cheese on top of the rice. We ordered their half wedge salad, cheeseburger fried rice, a dou milkshake but it was more of a drink, bamboo, martini, savory, scallion, waffles, and egg foo young. Service was so accommodating and friendly and even though we did not specifically request a booth on our reservation they were able to give us a booth. We ordered: Scallion waffles: love loved. Finally had the chance to check out this new Asian American diner! What a interesting take! Had their savory scallion waffle with sambal honey butter, one of their most popular items and it did not disappoint! A great mix of savory with a hint of sweetness to it. My brother and I loved it. Theres a distinct aftertaste that surprised us so much. Ill have to try the addition of the chicken next time but overall I think this dish was worth it. Kim-Chilaquiles - wow really love the fusion here. Kimchi and chilaquiles, both two items I love. Large portion, with a side of avocado. This was easily a favorite between us as well. Really worth! Breakfast bling - green chorizo, eggs, scallion pancake, spicy crema - wasn't a huge fan of this one. It was fairly bland scallion pancake that was essentially a crispy tortilla that I think could have used more spicy crema spread out with more chorizo & eggs. The toppings on this is VERY thin. The ambiance was lovely inside, I think they nailed that asian inspired dinner feel. Since Lunar new years was more recent they still had some Lunar new year lanterns up. Wow! I stopped by Agnes and Sherman on a Wednesday after work. I probably made it there around 5:15. I was one of the first people in the building, but soon after it filled up. Just walking up it gives a modern twist to a retro diner. When I walked in, I immediately said that this place was super cute. They had a nice playlist going, and everyone was so nice and energetic. They have happy hour all day on Wednesdays and Thursdays. So I started with the happy hour fried chicken wings, and the scallion waffle. That waffle was 10 out of 10! The chicken wings were very flavorful and crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside. I also had a watermelon frozen margarita. It was pretty good. Nice and refreshing for the summer. The portion sizes are huge, so be prepared to split your dishes and still have enough to bring home. We tried the rice cakes dish and the egg foo young. I really enjoyed both dishes. The rice cakes dish did have a little spice to it, which I enjoyed. The other dish was also flavorful. They usually give you hot sauce on the side for it, and I do recommend adding it for an extra kick. We also split the bean-coffee pie, which was really good. My personal favorite was the Engsu's Chicken. Great crunch, salty but not too salty. Loved the lettuce combo and the sauce with it amplified the umami factor. The Taiwanese Disco Fries didn't hit the mark. It was missing the crunch and all the goobers on it distracted from the fries which were far too thin. The Jian-BLT was cool because in essence - it was just a classically good BLT but wrapped in an egg. I kinda wanted to have something dip it in but that's just me. This place has been getting lots of buzz so we stopped by. Talk about disappointing. This was probably the most disappointed we've been by a new restaurant in years. Small menu (which I like) but many items on the menu weren't accurate. When I informed the waiter that I don't like mayo, she told me what to eat and what to stay away from (basically half of the menu). Unfortunately she's not as familiar with the menu as she claimed to be. The honey on the shrimp toast was actually honey mayo *vomit emoji* and one of our other dishes also had a sauce with mayo in it. Please servers - know your menu and what is on each dish. And please owners - if you're gonna describe the ingredients of each dish, please list them all. I'm honestly shocked this place is Michelin recommended. It's probably more on par with PF Chang's. Just very mediocre Chinese food, although the drinks are very good. If you're on the fence about going here, trust me, skip it and go elsewhere. There are so many better spots in the area. We initially made a reservation for 5, but they were able to accommodate and increase our reservation to 6. I'd been wanting to checkout this Asian American owned establishment that sits where Shade, and later, Alice Blue, once did. The decor is bright, airy, and carries a nice balance between simple and modern with a diner vibe. Parking is available along the street and nearby open surface lots. Upon walking in the brunch reservation was confirmed and our party was sat within five minutes of the table being cleared. Food & Drink - 5* This is a family dining concept where multiple dishes can be ordered for sharing. And wow, there's so many items you will want to try but not have the appetite for! The cheeseburger fried rice is on another level delicious, we all agreed this could be a singular item we would all exclusively have if given the chance. The Kim-chilaquiles is a nice twist on the traditional dish. There was a small portion of egg that was not cooked, but other than no complaints and it's a very shareable dish. For a dessert go with the pandan French toast or a scoop of pandan ice cream. For drinks, the Bloody Mary was interesting, not as traditional as one would expect in terms of looks or mouthfeel with a thicker tomato juice, but it has a nice kick to it. Very enjoyable over the course of our entire meal. Service - 4.5* From the time we walked in to when we left, we were never short on anything. We never ran out of water or waited too long between dishes arriving. The drinks took a little longer than expected, but I chalk this up to a heavy brunch crowd. It was absolutely packed when we arrived. Cost - 5* Subjective as I always say, but when one considers the quality, the portion, and the service - it's worth the price. This spot is small and intimate, which makes for a great dining experience right from the start. The food was excellent and genuinely unique -- not the kind of dishes you can find just anywhere. We had a waffle for dinner (yes, and it worked), along with a fried rice that was far from typical: cheeseburger fried rice, and it was fantastic. The steak frites was also very good, and the shoestring fries were some of the best I've had in a long time. Overall, every dish impressed. Service was great as well once we were seated. Our waiter really took the time to understand our preferences and recommended cocktails with creative twists on the ingredients, which we loved. The only minor downside is how close some of the tables are to each other. I'm not a big fan of the wall-lined tables with a shared bench where it feels like you're practically sitting with your neighbors. Had high hopes going into A&S, but sadly I was disappointed. Service was great, friendly staff, but my review is based mostly on the food. The deconstructed crab wonton was slightly weird in my opinion...and the wonton crisps seemed to have been cooked in old oil and the color was super dark...didn't taste fresh...and the savory scallion waffle was underwhelming too! The waffle tasted like a regular waffle and the honey butter had very little sambal - it was really just honey butter! Then we ordered the chilled cucumbers for $10 - and while it was fresh and crispy...it wasn't worth $10!! I could make this at home and it wasn't memorable! Then we ordered the beef chow fun and it was so salty we had to send it back... A&S has perched itself on W 19th street in the heart of the heights, previously housed by Alice Blue! They're bringing an open concept kitchen, but for me, it didn't really carry a "diner" feel upon walking into the restaurant....the ambiance just felt like a casual restaurant but not truly embracing a "diner" experience. read more

In April, they had a collaboration supper with Mimi Cheng's. A & S x Mimi's crawfish and shrimp dumplings (boiled) were garnished with thin scallions and a side of Szechuan chile butter, which was quite addicting. The seafood was plump, moist, and very tender. I loved the texture and flavor of the chilled cucumbers, which was creamy, spicy, and savory. It really met expectations. The mix of toum (fluffy garlic sauce) and salsa macha (fried dried chilies, garlic, nuts, and seeds in oil) with the fried shallots, sesame seeds, and crunchy Persian cucumbers was so good. The rice cakes (beef ragu) dish was good, though it reminded me of an elevated hamburger helper, which really can't be helped. The beef fajita chow fun was delicious and captured the mix of both cultures really well. The smokiness of the fajita seasoning, tender beef slices, and fresh cilantro mixed well with the oily and bouncy noodles. The bean-offee pie had a delicate banana custard, salted bean dulce de leche layer, caramelized chopped banana pieces, and dollop of crème fraiche whip. After the staff noticed we needed ice water to offset the spice, they came by often. Also, our waitress offered a dessert because an entree was delayed. read more
