They were pretty short-staffed when I arrived - I noticed quite a few patrons lining up before a staff member helped them get their seats. We had a bit of a wait as well. The restaurant looked the same - spacious with a variety of seating options and a cute bar in the corner. Once we were seated we were excited to order! We opted to share a few items: the savory scallion waffle, the shrimp toast, and the Vietnamese beef dip. The waffle was as delicious as I remembered - the savory butter paired SO well and is such a unique taste! The shrimp toast came out next - I loved how crunchy it was and how cleanly they baked the shrimp into the toast! The candied nuts were such a nice pairing. And lastly, the beef dip. We ordered their half wedge salad, cheeseburger fried rice, a dou milkshake but it was more of a drink, bamboo, martini, savory, scallion, waffles, and egg foo young. The cheeseburger fried rice was basically a deconstructed cheeseburger with rice instead of bread. The egg foo young reminds us of étouffée. I'd been wanting to checkout this Asian American owned establishment that sits where Shade, and later, Alice Blue, once did. The decor is bright, airy, and carries a nice balance between simple and modern with a diner vibe. Parking is available along the street and nearby open surface lots. Upon walking in the brunch reservation was confirmed and our party was sat within five minutes of the table being cleared. Food & Drink - 5* This is a family dining concept where multiple dishes can be ordered for sharing. And wow, there's so many items you will want to try but not have the appetite for! The cheeseburger fried rice is on another level delicious, we all agreed this could be a singular item we would all exclusively have if given the chance. The Kim-chilaquiles is a nice twist on the traditional dish. There was a small portion of egg that was not cooked, but other than no complaints and it's a very shareable dish. For a dessert go with the pandan French toast or a scoop of pandan ice cream. For drinks, the Bloody Mary was interesting, not as traditional as one would expect in terms of looks or mouthfeel with a thicker tomato juice, but it has a nice kick to it. Small menu (which I like) but many items on the menu weren't accurate. When I informed the waiter that I don't like mayo, she told me what to eat and what to stay away from (basically half of the menu). Unfortunately she's not as familiar with the menu as she claimed to be. The honey on the shrimp toast was actually honey mayo *vomit emoji* and one of our other dishes also had a sauce with mayo in it. Please servers - know your menu and what is on each dish. And please owners - if you're gonna describe the ingredients of each dish, please list them all. I'm honestly shocked this place is Michelin recommended. It's probably more on par with PF Chang's. The area in the heights is really nice - parking is easy, lots of nice places to walk around. Despite it being easy to get a reservation a few hours before, the place was busy! In fact, we had to wait 20min past our reservation time for a table to open up. Service was quick after that. Cocktails were good - I particularly liked the Big Red Bean - clarified + bourbon-- sign me up! Food itself was okay - the specialties recommended were the waffle, crab rangoon, egg foo young, cheeseburger fried rice. We ended up getting: Savory scallion waffle: 4/5 - honestly, just tasted like a waffle and butter, which is good in itself. Wish the scallions were more prominent. Chilled cucumbers: 4/5 - these were pretty basic, but good - chilled cucumbers with chili oil. Watch out - there's some peppercorn in there, so your mouth might tingle a bit. Egg foo young: 3/5 - this was okay. It's unique with the crawfish, but it was just okay. We had to douse it in some Cajun hot sauce that they brought it out with for some flavor. Cheeseburger fried rice: 2/5 - maybe we should have looked up pictures before we ordered this - we were a bit disgusted when we saw the dish, and it tasted about how it looked. It basically looks like somewhat blended a cheeseburger and served it. Definitely not something I expected at a nicer restaurant. It tasted like a ground up cheeseburger... Pandan sundae: 3/5 - this was okay, but realistically based on the proportions should be called coconut whipped cream with a bit of pandan ice cream - it was 75% whipped cream, 25% ice cream. Had high hopes going into A&S, but sadly I was disappointed. Service was great, friendly staff, but my review is based mostly on the food. The deconstructed crab wonton was slightly weird in my opinion...and the wonton crisps seemed to have been cooked in old oil and the color was super dark...didn't taste fresh...and the savory scallion waffle was underwhelming too! The waffle tasted like a regular waffle and the honey butter had very little sambal - it was really just honey butter! Then we ordered the chilled cucumbers for $10 - and while it was fresh and crispy...it wasn't worth $10!! I could make this at home and it wasn't memorable! Then we ordered the beef chow fun and it was so salty we had to send it back... A&S has perched itself on W 19th street in the heart of the heights, previously housed by Alice Blue! They're bringing an open concept kitchen, but for me, it didn't really carry a "diner" feel upon walking into the restaurant....the ambiance just felt like a casual restaurant but not truly embracing a "diner" experience. read more
