I went here for the first time the day before thanksgiving and I was so impressed with The Place. First off they serve my favorite holiday drink the Tom and Jerry. I was so happy to hear that they have this drink. Not many places in Buffalo serve it anymore. It was so tasty. Then I had the French onion soup which was out of this world along with the truffle chips. Everything we had was delicious. The atmosphere was so inviting and warm you felt like you were at your house just with a lot more people. The Place would be a great date night spot. The bar was big and crowded but that only means it's a great place to go. The staff was great to. We didn't make reservations but they quickly found us a seat even though they were super busy. Also added bonus you get to keep the mug that your Tom and Jerry comes in. I can't wait to go back and try something else from their menu!!! read more

I've been here a few times and the food is consistently good. The last time I was here I had the wedge salad with steak. My steak was cooked perfectly and they were able to sub pickled red onions for regular onion which was awesome! The person I was with got the lobster roll and it was pretty large/very filling. The outside patio/deck is really nice, but filled with bees around this time of year so watch out. They did have a bee trap nearby, but they swarmed our plates anyways. The inside has plenty of seating and a huge perk of this restaurant is that it has a parking lot which is so rare in the Elmwood Village. Prices are reasonable and the food is always good, so I would definitely recommend it for lunch or dinner! read more

We used to live near The Place under its previous owners so when we saw the feature in the News that they had remodeled, had a new chef, etc., we decided to give it another shot. It used to be a very convenient place for drinks and have a decent selection of bar food and sandwiches (with some odd entrees). We tried the new Place last night and it was quite good. I had the Friday fish fry and the fish (battered) was delicious, as was the pasta salad. I didn't care for the cole slaw (too much mayo for me) but everyone else at the table liked it. The fries were good as well. I was thrilled with this discovery because my go to place for fish fry - The Shannon Pub - recently closed. My husband had the Reuben, which he said was good. And my dad had the Cajun fish fry, which he said was delicious. We cleaned our plates. They have built a big, beautiful raised porch off of the front, so that will be a huge draw when the weather warms back up. The only other thing I'll mention is that the prices might be a touch higher than expected. I think the fish fry was $17 versus probably $13, $14, $15 elsewhere. The guys each had two beers - which as $7.50 each was $30 on beer. That said, the fish was delicious and the restaurant is looking really good. We'll be back again. read more

I've been coming to The Place for years. Since my doctor told me I had to start watching my weight, I decided to go with a healthier option and ordered the wedge salad. I was surprised by the presentation, at first. Then once I dug in I was very impressed at the variety of flavors that were incorporated. The iceberg lettuce was pristine, but the 2 cherry tomatoes and 2 strips of bacon really made it. 10/10 would recommend. read more

Went for brunch with friends on a Sunday morning. Good atmosphere when we walked in....started with bloody Mary's which were spicy and good. I had an Irish coffee that will definitely warm you up as well with delicious whipped cream. Unfortunately that's where the greatness stops. The food took a long time and was mediocre at best. The eggs Benedict had a sad small amount of hollindase sauce that was bland. The blueberry pancakes were okay however they came with small packs of fake syrup and we had to ask for more. The bacon was so salt it was almost inedible. I would say over all the food was meh. The service was sparse as there was only on waitress for the whole place. She was nice however seemed overwhlemed. I would return for drinks and give them a second chance for regular menu food, however will not be back for bruch. read more

I've been back to The Place a few times since they've reopened, living right around the corner I could come here more often alas, I don't. With the season being here and after my good friend and I came for our first Tom and Jerry I wanted to share the experience with my parents who have never been here and haven't had a Tom and Jerry!?!?!? So with some planning and the addition of some friends I made a reservation. For an appetizer I had the spinach and artichoke dip, it's served hot in a crock with pita chips. My friends and I loved the pita chips as they were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. They were the prefect pairing for the dip. For my main course I had the Cajun pasta, it is served in a creamy tomato sauce with chicken, Andouille sausage and tossed with linguini. I can't say I was overly impressed with my experience, everything was good enough but could have been better. The first Tom and Jerry I had about a week ago was better, maybe a little more boozy and overall had better flavor when I mixed the hot egg nog/meringue into it. The dip was good however I like having a the taste of cheese to enhance the artichoke and make up for the lack of flavor spinach provides and for my pasta I would have preferred a penne or other shaped pasta and I wasn't really blown away. The dish had enough heat, not being overly spicy but sadly all together nothing really blew me away with that "wow" factor. Service wise everything was OK until it came to the bill. One of my friends surprised us by paying half of the bill off first and when it came to settling the bill we gave our waitress cash and one card. She ended up charging everything to the card and left the cash (??) which afterwards we settled amongst our friend and his card. However since we mingled for a few extra minutes she came running back to the table to state she was under tipped (!?!?). As a table we made the mistake of tipping on the remaining half that we paid, accidently leaving out portion that was paid by our friend however when I was a server I would never have had the gall to request my tip be adjusted for all she knew we were not satisfied with the service. She hadn't been that attentive and I had to call her over to order a second round of drinks. In the end we apologized for our error and adjusted the money for her tip. Took my two daughters and two grandchildren for an end of school lunch. Kids both ordered kids hamburger meals & my daughter ordered a cheeseburger medium & I ordered 1 medium rare. The both were brought as medium-I told the server and he returned to the kitchen and came right back saying it was medium rare. He also never gave us the mayo. When I cut into mine it was medium. Neither had any flavor-not even salt & pepper. My other daughter was brought the wrong chicken sandwich so he took that back & when the correct one was brought it was on the burnt side. Waitress was snippy when I asked about sides, snippier when I pointed out (in nicer terms) that my cherry almond pie was a mangled, $6.50 mass of cough syrup on frozen pie crust. She took it off the bill, radiating dislike. My Rueben was full of nice, thick chunks of corned beef (yay!), served on charred black bread (oh...). Friend's pasta was delicious and his pie was appropriately pie shaped; he said it was nothing great, but alright. I would leave a review regarding the taste and presentation of the food, however we never received our meals so I can't actually do that. After waiting an hour for a burger and Reuben, we approached the manager; but he never came back to tell us what happened to our order. We waited a bit longer and still nothing. Eventually, our unphased server came over to offer us to go boxes and a dessert, but still no entrees in sight. The tables around us had been through 2 courses in the amount of time we wasted waiting on our lunches. The Place has been on my "do-list" for decades ..... Really. It was the first Place I had a Tom and Jerry with very dear old friends and has always held a memory of them and growing up on the West Side of Bflo. Finally made it back for lunch .... and T&J's. It was a bustling Thursday and with several reserved tables it was going to be a little wait. Well we like to relax and eat at the bar when it's a Place that's conducive to it, and with 2 open chairs we settled in. So glad we did. The barkeep was very attentive and personable even though very busy and when we struck conversation he made time for us while constantly fulfilling his duties. We began with of course Tom & Jerry's while perusing the menu and decided to start with Truffle Cauliflower and Bacon Black Bean soups and on to the Crab Cake and Reuben's for entrees. Everything was VG, including the T&J's, which we ordered another of. We look forward our next visit, but for dinner this time. You know when you're looking so forward to trying something out for the first time and you have this vision in your head- then it happens and it's a total letdown? Well that is what I experienced with The Place... My roommate and I just moved super close to it and finally decided to give it a try, instead of one of our usual Elmwood go-to spots. We walk in, both first timers, and went to where we assumed someone would meet you to be seated, as there was a "Please wait to be seated" sign. We stood there. 5 mins went by... 10 mins... At this point we're just standing there looking stupid waiting to be acknowledged. There were several servers and staff who walked by us and NOT ONE acknowledged us. My mom owned a restaurant, I've worked in a few, and I would be downright ashamed and embarrassed if someone in my establishment did this. It was a weekday and they were NOT busy. Without further consideration we walked out and went to Gabriel's Gate, a place where we are always acknowledged and have guaranteed good food. I am truly disheartened to rate three stars. I want to give The Place five stars. I have been a frequent flyer here since they reopened. When they do it right, man do they hit it out of the park! The problem is how inconsistent the food is. Service is always stellar! Bar staff is friendly and stirs up conversations with as many customers as they can. The drinks never disappoint. Servers are attentive, friendly and each have different, yet wonderful personalities that shine during service. I love the atmosphere here! This past Friday night I met a friend at the bar and then sat to have dinner. I recommend reservations for the weekends. We started with the Arancini, risotto ball stuffed with meat, peas, nuts and set on top of marinara. Delicious and not too heavy! We then ordered the Cajun Broiled Fish and the Bacon Mac n' Cheese to share. This was a, hit it out of the park kind of night! So much flavor in the Mac. Huge chunks of bacon. The fish was perfectly cooked. The portions were huge! We truly enjoyed ever bite! I may or may not be embarrassed by how many times I have stopped in for either the Bacon or Shrimp Mac. Why only three stars, you just never know what you're going to get. There have been too many times it has been so flavorless and disappointing. I have seen the Poached Pear Salad twice. The first time it looked beautiful and came just as the menu stated. The second time, it came missing the cranberries and goat cheese. With such a simple salad, two of the main ingredients missing make for quite the boring salad. With how great The Place can be, it definitely outweighs the underwhelming experiences. I came here with the expectation of grabbing some mac and cheese that would blow my mind. I was disappointed -- the mac and cheese that I ended up trying was okay, but in no way mind-numbingly exemplary. Quite the contrary, it was skimpy on the cheese and the panko bread crumbs on it were a little burnt. The service and ambiance of this place is pretty cool for a neighborhood bar though. Very comfortable to sit at the bar, watch some sports, talk to some locals and the bartender was incredibly friendly. They are rumored to have really strong drinks and some of the best Tom & Jerry's as well, but I didn't indulge. Maybe that's why the mac & cheese wasn't that great, because I was sober? :( Still though, a cute OK neighborhood bar. I came here two different times in the span of two weeks and I will have to admit that this place is good. The Place is the real deal when it comes to the fish fry they do on Friday and it doesn't disappoint. It is one of the only older restaurants in Elmwood village that I know of that has a parking lot which is rare and convenient for getting there if you don't live close, and the service is always great. A new review for new ownership. First of all, so glad we gave "The Place" a second chance. We heard the news about the ownership was changing hands and loved the building. We walked in and immediately to a slightly renovated room. Same charm with more updated, clean and inviting seating. Immediately we were greeted by the waitress and the owner Jay. I ordered the Steak Sandwich medium rare. Let me tell you, this sandwich is for those that crave the ole Pinks steak sandwich but with a refined grown up palate. The minute I bit into the sandwich I was in heaven. So good my fiancee wanted a few bites. Between two rolls was the most perfectly cooked steak. With a homemade onion ring and pepper jam. No A1 needed here, don't insult this sandwich. Paired with fresh crispy house made potato chips. Staff is friendly and attentive. The owner is very involved. Btw... Came here around 7pm on a Saturday night to watch a Sabres game and sat at the bar. Drinks prepared that were just eh - the basic well drinks was the only thing tasty. Rude and entitled bartender - my friend spilled a drink and he literally threw two dish rags down on the bar as the bartender walked away leaving her to completely wipe down and clean the counter her self. The bartender did refill her drink, but still the impression of indifference was already imprinted. Another friend in our party then also asked for a drink and the same bartender loudly scolded him disrespectfully as if he were child telling him to wait his turn. Everyone in that corner of the bar was in shock with mouths dropped open. It was soo uncomfortable geez. The other bartender ran over to fulfill his drink order instantly to kind of diffuse the situation. But honestly at that point the damage was done we shortly left afterwards. I've always preferred the ambiance of a nice pub over any other type of restaurant. A nice booth, cozy atmosphere, good food and drink. I've struggled to find that spot in Buffalo as most restaurants feel more like a eatery/bar hybrid. But The Place is very close to being the ideal spot. Positive: Any conversation about The Place will ultimately revolve around their food because its so good. I've tried a large portion of their menu and i've never been disappointed. It's possibly my favorite burger in buffalo. The menu is large enough to give you options, but small enough to allow focus and quality. Anything i've ordered arrived perfectly cooked. The Atmosphere is nice with a mix of bar, booth and table sitting. Everything is always clean. Its a nice place to sit and have a conversation with the people as the noise is never overpowering. Negative: The atmosphere again! While I like the space, its broken up in a strange way and everything feels suburban new. I like my pubs a bit more broken in, less designer chic. Its a nit pick, and will likely not be a negative for others. The prices however might be a problem for some. Its above average prices for buffalo and while I think the food certainly deserves it, it does make The Place a rare treat, rather than a regular haunt. Conclusion: The Place is the type of restaurant you'd bring your parents if you want a sure fire homerun. The food is great and well worth a try if you're in town. read more

We walked over to Kunis, but it was too long of a wait so we went across the street to The Place. No reservations. When you walk in, there is a bar to the left side and dining area to the right side. We asked for a seat away from the door, so we ended up near the kitchen in a nice big round booth in between the bar and dining area. We ordered the steak sandwich (medium), and lobster roll. Both came with a side of salad. The steak was little overcooked, but otherwise OK. The lobster, however, was not good. They had put some seed seasoning on it that completely overpowered the natural taste of the lobster. I took one bite, and said immediately, that I did not like it (and believe me, there's never been a lobster that I did not like). If you go there and order the lobster roll, I would highly recommend asking that they leave off the seasoning, and instead bring you a side of butter. Ambiance: Although it wasn't busy, it was very loud inside, truly more of a bar (to me) than a restaurant. Also, the music playing were from a variety of different eras. Live downtown and come here all the time. Also brag about how good it is. My friend and I both work in the service industry downtown and have the utmost patience and respect for the job. We waited 30+ minutes at the table for someone to even acknowledge us, no water, nothing. The waitress was going up to the table next to us chugging wine off her friends table not saying a single word to us. Finally, we go up to the hostess and ask her if we could be waited on. She seemed frustrated. Finally we get an order in and it takes 20 minutes to get a glass of wine. Keep in mind the whole restaurant basically cleared out by this time and people are sitting next to us with drinks from the bar. Trying hard to support locally during COVID but when online ordering doesn't even have an accurate limited menu or business hours, allowing customers to place orders and not being told until 10 minutes before you are due for pick up...it's more than a little frustrating. The Place has always had an important place in my heart, because I used to live across the street. I used to only drink Tom and Jerry's and rusty chain there, because I don't know if they offered much more. I LOVE that Jay kept the original feel of The Place and cleaned it up a ton. No more smelly bathrooms! Most importantly though, the food is SO SO SO good now!!!! And, they have really good gluten free options and take it really seriously. We enjoy their menu a great deal, but the noise level we consider boisterous and we found one of our bartenders and servers quite rude and condescending during our last visit. This disappointed us because we've always enjoyed going there for Tom & Jerry's at holiday time with friends because we longer live in Buffalo.
