One of the best little bars in the Elmwood Village area of Buffalo. It's not "divey" in the sense that it's dark and dirty, but rather it's very homey and comfortable. No place does Christmas decorations better and...you know it's coming...the TOM AND JERRY'S are the best in Buffalo. If you've never had one it's a creamy hot drink filled with plenty of liquor. The food is good and consistent home style stuff. Nothing you can't get anywhere else but, at the same time, very tasty. My first time here. I have heard so much about it from others, so I suggested it when a couple of friends and I were doing a preshow dinner (Navigation Theater Co on Elmwood). It was a lot busier than I thought, and quite noisy when we entered. The lighting was nice, and we were greeted by a super friendly Hostess. Our waiter was quite pleasant, but forgetful - which was my only issue throughout the evening. First off was a delightful French Martini - which was the first time if had one of those. For a starter, I ordered the French Onion soup which apparently is something they are known for. That said, I was impressed that they had four other soup offerings as well. The Onion soup did not disappoint; it was salted just enough, the onions were plentiful and delicious. There was sufficient gooey cheese on top that went down the sides of the crock; truth because told picking off the cheese is my favorite part. I decided I'd order the "small" plate Lobster Mac and cheese; well I didn't know what to expect, but I didn't expect what I saw. The Lobster Mac was served in a big cast iron dish and I immediately thought - I'll need a box. The dish was AMAZING; it had palpable chunks of lobster and the cheese was rich and well, cheesy. I loved it and would order it again in a heartbeat ... maybe next time with bacon! I highly recommend The Place, as I'm sure many have. A little better service and this would've been a 5! read more

Our waitress was awesome, especially with having a big group on a busy night. We shared a few bottles of wine which were all very good, and then split some wings, a flatbread, Cajun pasta, and, my absolute favorite, the mushroom and truffle Mac & cheese. An 1 1/2 hour into dinner we we got our bill, we paid and while waiting for our waiter to pick our payment the little male host asked us to leave because they had other people waiting for our table. My wife and I had dinner there on friday.. everything was fine... the food, same as it always was. and service, as usual, left something to be desired but was not bad by any means... just the same old slightly above mediocre eating establishment we've been going to for years. what happened next, however, will scar me for life. as my wife and i were leaving out the back door, the largest RAT i have ever seen ran out of the kitchen, took 1 look at us and bolted back into the kitchen doors. my wife barley made it to the restroom to vomit. i brought it to the attention of the hostess but she just seemed to nervously laugh it off. Although the bar is pristine, the restaurant is SUB par. My 83 year old,mother was in the middle of a mouth of food and was asked by the untrained hostess in torn jeans to MOVE in order for another couple to sit. Also, myself, partner, and mother all ordered liver and onions ( which is traditionally served with gravy) and parts of our food was served almost raw more than twice, while other parts were dry and tasteless. Dinner on their new porch was outstanding. Service was excellent and contributed to a perfect night out. The linguine with clam sauce was served piping hot with fresh chopped clams. It was a generous portion perfectly seasoned. The mac n' cheese was delicious and again a very large serving. Everyone enjoyed their meal and we cannot wait to return. I have been to The Place twice since it has reopened. The first time I sat at the bar with a friend on a weeknight and we had Tom & Jerry's, some chicken wings and wine. The T&J's are as good as I remember and we were able to take our mugs home. That was a fun extra and nice way to remember the holiday season with friends. The chicken wings were hot and crispy. The wine wasn't anything amazing, but at least they had a variety to choose from and this isn't exactly a wine bar. The second time I came with 5 friends and we sat in a booth on a Saturday night. We weren't in a rush and the drinks were flowing, but we did realize later how long the food took to come out when we were finally leaving 2.5 hours later. We did have some wimgs and soup before our dinners, but even with appetizers, that is quite a wait. I split a burger and mac and cheese with another person. The burger was good, but could have used less Worcestershire sauce as it made us really thirsty for water after. The bacon mac and cheese was good, although the melty cheese under the crumble topping was a little too thin so it didn't stick to the noodles as much as it should have. Overall it was a good place to go with friends and have a relaxed dinner. If you are in a hurry or looking for a culinary masterpiece, you may want to go elsewhere, but if you are looking for a laid back place to meet up with some friends, go here! read more

We were on the hunt for brunch and football near the Elmwood Village on a Sunday morning. We were heading for Thirsty Buffalo, but were sidetracked by a sign on Lexington that said "Bruch, Lunch, FOOTBALL" The parking lot looked to be pretty empty so we figured we would have a better chance getting immediate service at "The Place" rather than trying to fight our way into a parking spot and wait listing ourselves at one of the more popular places on Elmwood. The food was fine...nothing outrageously delicious, nothing terrible either. We ordered the Mac n Cheese (they were out of mushrooms, but still made it with truffle oil), french onion soup, house salad, and split the steak sandwich. All decent, no complaints, no accolades, either though. Service was prompt and polite. They have wifi and comfy booths with large tables great for spreading out calendars, computers, and notebooks...which is a great option for non-football fans while their husbands watch football. lol Suggestion: We heard the bartender telling one of the patrons that theyve started opening on Sundays for brunch and football just three weeks ago in hopes of bringing in some business. My suggestion, offer brunch and football drink specials! Everywhere else does! Ever hear that song, "My milkshake brings all the boys to the yaaaard...." I went to the place on a Tuesday to spend time with my mother, which is one of her favorite spots. She is approaching 80 and certainly moving a bit slower but never had anything eventful happen with regards to her age. Our server was Addie, it was her first night and she was very professional and pleasant. My mother who has been to the place very many times got a kick of it being a servers first shift, and she did a great job. Here is where the intensity of this review gets cranked to 10. My mother begins to choke on her dinner. I, having no formal first aid training and having skipped middle school health class to flirt with girls in the hallway have no idea what to do in this situation. I watch helpless as the life drains from my mothers eyes. Disbelief turns to panic and I begin to say what I thought might be my final words to her "did you update the will?" I gasp knowing there's no way she could answer but needing to ask regardless. But then, Addie, from no where, jumps into action. She's a whirlwind of movement and before I know what's happening a piece of chicken is flying across the dining room and my mother is breathing. I usually don't give bad reviews. But oh boy. Where to start. Came here with a small group at one of the members suggestion. When we got there, we were told it was going to be 20 to 25 minutes. 35 minutes later, I went to check and the hostess told me she was just waiting on the patrons in the table in the back to clear and pointed. I passed the table as I was using the bathroom and they were still eating. We waited almost an hour. Annoying, but forgivable, and I brush it off. In the meantime, I got a drink at the bar. The bartender acted like he did not want to be bothered. That should have been the first sign. So we are finally seated. I ordered the Friday fish special, Cajun broiled, not fried. It was so salty it was inedible. I love salt, I put it on almost everything including ice cream and watermelon (weird, I know but I love salt and yes, my blood pressure is good!). This was so salty, I could not eat it. I asked the waitress if I could get it fried instead as it seemed a safe bet. As I nibble on some fries waiting for the fried fish, I ended up pulling a long hair out of my mouth. I realize accidents happen, but it doesn't make it any less gross. I told her to forget about my replacement fish and I was good but thank you. She insisted it was ready to go and already made and she could box it up and would bring a full meal. At this point, everyone else is almost done and my appetite had been ruined, but I agree. I did taste the fried fish it was much better but nothing special. I think what is irritating me is all this happened- physically pulling stranger's hair from my mouth and I didn't get to eat with everyone else, and they did not compensate anything,nor did a manger stop by. I made it clear that I really didn't want the new meal, but took it at her insistence, which was my bad. It was definitely my mistake since I paid $17 for a fish fry and most of it will go in the trash. To be charged full price for a meal, after finding someone else's hair in your food and pulling it from your teeth, to me is unacceptable. I don't expect free, not even half off, but maybe a few dollars off or a manager stopping by to show that they acknowledge that someone made a very unsanitary mistake. Came here recently on a whim to try a Tom & Jerry. What's a Tom & Jerry you ask? Well, it's a warm alcoholic holiday beverage that tastes somewhat like an adult eggnog that's given to you in a festive mug. We came in on a Friday night and it was packed to the brim, and many people were totin' those festive mugs. So we grab a spot at the bar to order our drinks and they arrived promptly. Tasty little things too, with quite a kick! If I had another I may have had a buzzy going. Service was good, it was pretty loud in there so talking was difficult, but it was a cozy atmosphere. One star because the Tom and Jerry's are amazing - but wait until it gets busy and while you are drinking your delicious T&J's you'll get booted from your table by a rude woman behind the bar because you're only paying $8 a drink, not for food, and if you're not eating you don't deserve a table. So much for being a paying customer.... I think we could have been "booted" in a nicer more professional way. We drove in from Rochester JUST to enjoy that drink we look forward to once a year, and we were very disappointed how we were confronted. If the high top cocktail tables in the bar area are meant for food ordering patrons only, then put a sign up. If you want great customer service skip this place, it's not THE place to be. The Place is a great neighborhood bar / restaurant in the Elmwood Village. Their renovations from the previous establishment are a wonderful upgrade. For the bar scene, they have everything you could want selection wise for any type of drinker, from beer to wine to liquor, even holiday cocktails such as Tom & Jerry's. I've eaten here before, and everything they serve is great from the wedge salad and wings to the salmon sandwich. Service is friendly and food is served on time. The only thing that annoyed me was when our waitress did not accurately handle the bill and placed the entire amount on my card when I had almost all of the bill settled in cash. It was confusing, inconvenient and unnecessary, if they only took the proper few moments to look over everything and listen to us as we handed them bill. December 8, 2017 Small office Christmas Party Held in Back Room, exceptional coordination with Sarah who was overseeing our event. Megan who was our server saw to every detail throughout the evening. The Executive Chef, Chris, prepared three mouth-watering dishes and was even able to prepare a special Vegan request. Room was perfect for intimate settings of 30 or less, nicely decorticated for Christmas, lighting and temperature were perfect and adjustable to our needs. It's true what they say - The Place is a local neighborhood-friendly, welcoming place where it seems like everyone knows each other. Took me a while to try this place b/c they don't have a website or a take-out menu but I'm glad I finally went in. Though I expected typical Buffalo-fare, there are quite a few creative menu items (ex: peanut butter and bacon burger) and entrees (pasta dishes/steaks) that I wasn't expecting. My "Big M" was basically a Big Mac done right - awesome patties, great fries, all for $9. They're also starting up a food truck ("The Place To Go") soon serving up similar items. My first impression of this place is, how could so many people be raving about this place? Its not very well kept place on the corner a block off of Elmwood. The interior is pretty outdated and emits a strange odor similar to when I used to work at nursing homes. The crowd that was there when I arrived comprised mostly of 70 year olds. The service was not terrific, they never really came by to ask how I was doing and I had to flag them down to get their attention. The food itself was great. What people have been saying about their mac n cheese is spot on ($12-14). It was one of the best mac n cheeses I've had in a while. It comes out in a hot cast iron skillet, and definitely delicious. Also, the amount of mac n cheese they give you is enough for two portions in my opinion. I could see this being an absolute hit in the winter. All in all the experience was okay.
