Last night, hubby and I went to "The Place" with good friends and their kids. It is an outdoor grill/picnic experience. Their t-shirts say "put a rump on a stump" as the majority of the seating would be cut logs - so bring a cushion! We did and it helped for our comfort!! It is BYOB and you can bring your own appetizer and sides as well. So we packed the cooler and ordered from the grill. Roasted clams, mussels, corn, veggie kebab, fish, ribeye and lobster. It is a casual experience and nothing fancy at all. The food was good, staff is friendly. You need to be prepared to clear you paper plates yourself, the server will take your order and the BBQ boys (HS and college students) run the grill and bring the food to you. The ribeye was delicious, lobster was good and tough to open without a cracker (hubby did the hard work for me) and the rest of our group loved their food as well. "Put your but on a stump". This place is an original, grill lobster which is first boiled to perfection, grilled corn on the cob, clams on the half shell. You are eating in someone's backyard on funky recycles spools. Great young stuff, fun place to bring a few beers and unwind over some good food. No credit cards but they will accept your check. This place has become one of the spots I will forever add to my summer requisite. The entire setting is classic New England coast with open air seating, tree stumps for seats, and roasted clams served on a scrap of metal grate. Seating can get hectic, but it is just a factor that you have to bear to get to the incredible food. We brought a cheese plate, but the next time I plan to bring more sides! Lured in by the atmosphere of an open fire and rustic tree stumps, we decided to give it a try, but will not be returning. We walked away hungry and had to make 2 trips to the ATM (thought $80 would be enough). We found it to be relatively expensive in comparison to Abbott's Lobster on the Rough, which we visit regularly. Put your rump on a stump There's a sign that says just that and that is indeed what you do. The Place isn't really a restaurant because there is no inside or building to speak of. Just a cleared area in which plywood and pieces of wood serve as tables and chunks of wood (the stumps) are used as seating. It's only open during the summer and casual would be an understatement, we have showed up in wetsuits after kayaking and felt overdressed. The food. If you want fresh seafood cooked over a gigantic open pit fueled by huge logs this is the place. The lobster is as good as any you will find in this area. Steamed mussels, clams, and even roasted chicken if you for some crazy reason don't like seafood. One of their best kept secrets is the roasted corn. Absolutely fantastic . So if you are looking to get all dressed up and want some ambiance and people to wait on you forget this place. If you have friends or family that like steak, fish, oysters, mussels, etc cooked outdoors "en plein air" you should bring them here - this place is rustic, you sit on a stump under a tent with the ground covered in shells, the cars hiss by on route 1.. not fancy schmancy but the food - it is oh-so good. Also note: this place is not a building, it is a tent - so its not open in the winter. Don't expect anything fancy here, where the butter-dripping grilled corn is served on paper plates, the juicy salmon comes served in tin foil, and the roast clams special comes served to you on burnt iron mesh grill that looks like it has been in the fire a thousand times over. They also don't really have any booze nor sides really, so I tell everyone to not only BYOB but BYOS(ides). They also don't accept plastic forms of payment, and if you don't have any hard currency on you can pay via personal check! All the food here is quite tasty. I highly recommend you get the roast clam special over the plain ones, because what sets these littleneck clams off is that they are twice fired, with the second roasting coming after being dressed in a cocktail and butter sauce. Sure they're great for sharing, but get a whole order for yourself and write me a thank you note later. The steamers are meatier, but you will get sand in your mouth even after thoroughly washing them in the Styrofoam cup of salt water. All the seafood is fresh, so you can't go wrong with the shrimp, cat fish, or salmon. For you meat lovers out there, there's even a rib eye steak option, but for $17 bucks isn't the greatest deal and this is more of a grill seafood kind of place. The PB mud bomb or ice cream sunday is a great way to cap off a delicious relaxing meal there too. It's literally a 1 pound slab of grizzle, maybe 1-2 oz of meat which are also not even cooked through. I managed to get 1-2 bites down before giving up, and shooting for an ear of corn as my dinner. One rotation or bites into the corn and I just can't. Its awful. Every single thing about this experience, this place, the food... is just awful. My father had ordered the mussels, and my mother the salmon. I don't like salmon, but I love well prepared mussels. I tried to eat one, had to spit it out. Awful. It was my mothers birthday and she said she liked her salmon, but I honestly think she was being polite and trying to make the best of her Bday dinner. In the six relatively livable months between April and October, you can have a hybrid picnic restaurant experience in a unique yet immediately accessible setting at The Place. I'll be honest - I've only been here once, and it was at the beginning of my stint in New Haven about two and a half years ago. Even so, I remember it well. I went with around ten new friends, most of whom I barely knew at the time. I'm now dating one of them, and I've been to another's wedding, and I count on having every one of them in my life after New Haven. The Place may not have cemented all of these bonds, but it was a crucial outing that I'll always think on fondly. The Place is an outdoor venue with food cooked on a huge open grill and seating consisting of stumps surrounding picnic tables. That's about all there is to it, and it's wonderful. The atmosphere is really happy and relaxed, and its hard not to have a good time there. I happen to remember the food for the simple reason that it was very straightforward. I had an ear of corn and my roommate and I split an order each of shrimp and barbecue chicken. I love grilled corn and The Place certainly didn't do anything to qualify that. The shrimp was great, nicely grilled and juicy. It was easily better than the barbecue chicken, which was a little bit dry without too much connection between meat and sauce. In retrospect, I regret not trying the clams or lobster, but I didn't even know the specialty was seafood. We took advantage of the bring your own drinks and sides policy, which is really brilliant.
