I had made a reservation and changed to a later time because I was having a wonderful time at a wine tasting. Very strange, he must have been looking at it all day because no one else was booking the restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. The portions were small. I am coming back here exclusively for the Tagliarini Pasta with sausage. 5/5 - It was AMAZING. And I live in San Francisco, but will 100% drive here just for this! Their pastas are fresh (not made in house) but whoever their source is does a bang up job. Seafood pappardelle (special) 4.5/5. Also really amazing, though I enjoyed the slightly toothier tagliarini and the tagliriani also had a touch bolder flavor. Braised short rib puff pastry 1.5/5. This was bad. The beef and flavor was fine. BUT the pastry wtf. It was SUPER hard. Not light and airy as expected. Not crispy nor crunchy. It actually hurt to bite it. Beet salad was tasty but felt very easy to make and something I could do at home. I'd skip the affogato. The ice cream was already mostly melted so with the hot espresso, it became a liquid mess in under a minute. Portions on the smaller side so it's bit pricey! UPDATE - been here a couple more times. Overall very good BUT they are inconsistent. Which does suck at this price point. The tagliarini was never as good as the first time (pasta overcooked and not al dente). The pappardelle actually was more al dente and toothier the third time vs tagliarini. Pork chop is amazing. Definitely Not a Michelin Star Experience--for Service, at Least Café La Haye may have the food game going, but if Michelin gave stars for service, our waiter would be deep in the negatives. My sister and I were treated like we had activated stealth mode--no greetings, no service, not even a glance. I half expected him to say, "This aggression will not stand, man," but instead, we got nothing. Just pure paraquat energy. Thankfully, Christina (the manager and clearly the restaurant's MVP) came to the rescue. She was attentive, kind, and made sure we finally got food on the table and a little joy back in our evening. If not for her, I'd be warning everyone off entirely. Would I recommend it? Only if Christina's working--and if you don't mind earning your meal through sheer perseverance. So thank you, Christina, for bringing some soul and service to the evening. Was really excited to try this restaurant as it's on the Michelin guide for Sonoma restaurants and it did not disappoint! The hostess and our waitress were both extremely friendly and gave us the best recommendations. Everything we ordered was exceptional but the standout dishes I really enjoyed were the braised short rib in puff pastry appetizer and the seasonal fish just melts in your mouth. You can tell the produce and meat they use are of the highest quality. We ended off the night with a couple of desserts and the warm apple pie cobbler paired with vanilla ice cream was truly amazing. We snagged a last minute reservation for dinner. the restaurant is cute with art on the walls. the wine we ordered was very tasty and local. the pork chop and accompanying sauce was spectacular- highly recommend. we also had the appetizer special, which was heirloom tomato and burrata with a crostini. We ended the night with the yuzu cheesecake, a very tasty dessert. we were lucky with finding free street parking within a 2 minute walk. all in all, a great night in sonoma! read more

I dined here yesterday with my father for lunch (first time). When we entered the door, I asked the waiter about the lunch menu's "Sonoma Scramble" which comes with smoked salmon. He said that it comes with 6 oz of salmon. We then sat down and ordered the salmon for my father. The waiter brought a dish that appeared to be larger, but I didn't make anything of it. After eating, the waiter brought us a bill of $45 for the salmon. When I inquired about why we weren't charged the $19 for the smoked salmon, the waiter said that the $19 was a charge for adding salmon to a dish. This made no sense since the "Sonoma Scramble" already listed salmon as an item. I looked up their full menu after coming home and found that the $45 was for a dinner option "Pan Seared Salmon" which we did not order. I would never expect this type of treatment and could never recommend it to anyone else. Typical bait and switch behavior! read more

The ambiance is comfortable and inviting without the pretentious vibe that a lot of high end restaurants have. The wine list was amazing and, most of all, we were blown away by the service! The intimate atmosphere, excellent service, and top-tier dishes are second to none. We had the pasta, risotto, and fish (the last one not pictured) and a bottle of wine. The food was perfectly balanced and so fresh! For dessert we had the yuzu cheesecake and one of the specials - a berry crumble. Both were stellar! The food was great. I love their pork chops and salads. They do not serve cocktails. I organized my local dinner group to go to Cafe La Haye on a Wednesday evening. When I made the reservation I asked if they could do separate checks and was told "Yes." When I called a week later to confirm the number, I asked again about separate checks. The woman said they usually didn't but since I was told by the man I spoke to before that they would, they'd honor it. I reported this to the group. When we showed up, the waiter said they couldn't do separate checks. He said management just wouldn't allow it. I asked the owner's wife, the hostess, and she said she'd ask. Apparently the answer was No. very awkward, like it was them against us on this matter. There were only six of us and they weren't very busy at all. Sure enough, when the dinner was over, the arrogant waiter plopped down one check and we were left to pull out our calculators, look at the menu for prices, and scramble for cash, especially since we were expecting to pay with individual credit cards. The Pinot was $22/glass, and the sparkling wine was $17 for a very skinny little flute. Corkage was $35. Another complaint was that when two people shared a salad for their first course, the waiter plunked the salad down and they were expected to split it themselves. Most good establishments who charge $18 for a smallish salad have it divided by the kitchen and served. The food was all good (5 stars!) but the abysmal customer service (1 star) did not make this local group of diners eager to come back anytime soon. read more

This was my second visit to Cafe La Haye and although it's been a while since the first one, everything was just as perfect as I remembered the first time. It's small and intimate right off the historic square of downtown Sonoma. The staff is warm and welcoming. Because of its size, be sure to make a reservation well in advance. We started with a glass of wine from their very nice wine list . We decided to pass on appetizers and went directly to the butter lettuce, salad, and the Caesar salad. Both were beautifully presented & perfectly dressed with tender fresh greens and in the case of the butter lettuce, salad, crispy, bacon, avocado, and a hard boiled egg. For our mains, we enjoyed the pork chop, which was slightly overcooked, and they immediately offered to remedy that by the way, and the pappardelle pasta special of the night with shrimp. we saved a little room for some dessert since we were celebrating a birthday, and the fresh fruit apple crisp with ice cream with a cappuccino was worth every single calorie , Yum! One year later on our trip through Sonoma and we had to return to Cafe La Haye. Still as excellent as it was a year ago. Food, service, and wine were all top notch. We were lucky enough to have Ester as our server again. She has such enthusiasm about the menu. Her descriptions of the extensive specials were detailed and spot on. I have no idea how she remembers such fine details of an ever changing menu. A true professional! We started with the chop salad as a starter, which I could have every day and not get tired of. I returned to the pork chop for my main, which was a generous cut. My partner had the chicken special, which was beyond generous in size and very tasty. We cheated again this time and had dessert. Nestled away in Downtown Sonoma sits a beautiful, small, quaint Michelin rated resturant called Cafe La Haye, our last day in Napa consisted of relaxation so we wanted to make sure we ended it with a lovely relaxing environment, and Cafe La Haye checked all those boxes. We were notified 30 minutes prior that our table was ready if we wanted to come in a little earlier, but we were driving from Napa so we kept our original 7:00 PM reservation. We arrived close to 7:12 after looking for parking and were greeted immediately by a very welcoming manager. Our server made great suggestions and was very knowledgeable of the menu and specials. I had the seared pork chop that came with mixed veggies and gnocchi, everything was phenomenal, my pork chop was so juicy and I even stepped out of my comfort zone and tried some fennel....not my favorite, but it accompanied the pork chop well. The portion size was also amazing. I paired my entree with a glass of Zinfandel and we had the apple crisp for desert. We had an excellent dining experience at Cafe La Haye. Our waitress, Gabriela was wonderful. She was so friendly, attentive and checked in with us through out our dinner to see if we needed anything, and to make sure were happy with our dishes. It was our first time there, and her recommendations on what to order were spot on! Kasa also took care of us through out the evening. Kasa was meticulous when it came to ensuring the table setting and our food presentation were perfect. He was also so pleasant to talk to. And, the food was excellent!!! TLDR: Excellent Salmon, Surprisingly good beets! Let's get started with the most surprising thing in our dinner, with a general statement, not too wacky or crazy, but here it is: I hate beets. I don't care for them, they taste awful, even if they are "sweet". There's just this strange after-taste that, if I can be a bit disgusting, makes me want to throw up. On the flip side, I LOVE risotto. If a risotto is cooked and done well, to me, that's the best thing on EARTH! So, what happens when a daring chef combines the one dish I LOVE with the one ingredient I HATE???? Keep readin' and find out! So this place is quite small. I counted maybe no more than 15 tables. Let's play an old Arsenio Hall segment (yes, I'm carbon-dating myself), called "Things that make you go hmmm..." Why is there a raised platform in the back half of the restaurant? That's where we were sat. Why is there a 2person table where one person sits FACING THE WALL? That happened to a couple next to us. And also, why did we get served ice water in half-sized water glasses? Did they run out of clean drinking glasses??? But people who came in after us got normal sized drinking glasses. Hmmmm.... Our server was quite friendly, but she rushed through all the specials of the day, as if she might forget one at ANY second. It was a bit hard to hear all the stuff, but my ears perked when she said "RISOTTO". Unfortunately, it was paired with beets... I ordered it anyway, hoping that it would be just a few beet chunks, that I could easily pick out. My wife ordered the other special of the day, King Salmon. I also ordered the soup of the day, which was creamofbroccoliwithgruyerecheesewithsomeoilthatIcouldn'tquitehearsinceshetalkedlikethisdrippedintoit, while my wife, the BIRTHDAY GIRL, also got a gem salad. My cream of broccoli soup was decent. Not sure what the oil was, as I mentioned earlier, the server spoke too fast for me to catch. I didn't like the oil though, so I just mixed it as best I could, hoping the soup would mask the taste better. I don't think I would order it again. My wife's gem salad on the other hand was super delish. I really really like butter lettuce. It's one of the few veggies (along with broccoli) that I earnestly like. The candied bacon on it was the accent that pushed the salad over the top. Truly excellent salad! My wife's king salmon was pretty tasty, and not dried out at all. And the sauce it was sitting atop of was pretty yummy as well. It came on a bed of couscous, and my wife loved it. She said it was light and fluffy. But that's not what you came to this review for... Can a risotto beat out beets??? The first hmmm thing was it was... pink. To my "dismay", there were chopped up bits of beets EVERYWHERE. There must have been a sale on beets, because at least 3 beets died making this risotto. But how does it TASTE??? Actually... not bad! It didn't make me want to throw up! I still don't like it that much, but at least I could eat it, which is a HUGE bonus. My wife actually liked the beets! Because normally, she can't stand beets either. The risotto itself was fantastic. It was creamy and smooth, and the rice was cooked al-dente, so it didn't taste like baby food. It had just a tiny bit of chew to it, which is what i really look for in a good risotto. I think if they had used any other ingredient, I would have given this a top 5 risotto award. We finished the evening with a silk cake, with a birthday candle on top. I was secretly hoping it would be on the house, like some other restaurants we went to for birthdays (see my Town San Carlos review). But no... nothing is given for birthdays here... ah well.. The silk cake... is not a cake. I'm not sure if a silk cake is ever supposed to be a cake. It was more like fudge. There wasn't the light and fluffy cake texture you'd expect but, it was saved by the quenelle of home-made cream on the side. The cream really cuts through the dense chocolate, adding a lightness to it. The service was decent. Several times my wife wanted more water, because to be honest, 2 sips was enough to drain the glass. The waitress eventually came around to top us off, 2x throughout the meal. The manager came to check on us as well to see how we were doing. That's nice. In the end, it was a good meal. Not perfect, but satisfying. And truly kudos to the one who made the beets palatable! A little late for our reservation, so they were expecting us and sat us quickly. We didn't go crazy with drinks this time since we came from a bar nearby, and we were famished. We ordered the Carpaccio, Duroc Pork Chop, Grilled Filet Mignon, and their specials... Buratta & Prosciutto appetizer and the Petrale Sole with calamari. We celebrated my friend's birthday during our weekend getaway at Cafe La Haye. I walked in and the host asked right away "Sandee for 2?" Nice. Seated right then and there. Off to a great start! Full from a day of gluttony, we went straight to the entrees. I really wished we could have ordered the burrata special, but I would have had to tackle that on my own due to my friend's lactose intolerance. - Duroc heritage pork chop ($28): Yeeeeees! The pork chop was juicy and I loved the sliced apples and crunchy peanuts. I surprised myself and polished it off! 4/5 - Porcini crusted chicken ($27): Not sure what we expected, but we actually had to confirm with our server that my friend got the right dish. Turns out the chicken had a ground porcini rub on it (didn't taste like much). The chicken was nice and moist, but nothing out of the ordinary. Just off the square in downtown Sonoma, Café Le Haye has been a stalwart of the Wine Country dining scene since 1996. While small with only 34 seats, the dining room has large windows facing the street and mirrors on the walls that give the illusion of a larger space. Overlooking the kitchen, the small bar has four of the best seats in the house, allowing patrons to get a great view of the food preparation action. Topped with two delicious fried oysters, the beef carpaccio ($17) disappeared all too quickly. Juicy and moist, the pork loin chop ($34) was huge and grilled to perfection. There's generally a risotto dish that changes daily. Don't miss the decadent butterscotch pudding for desert. The wine list is small, but well curated with a good selection of by the glass offerings. Service is spot on: water glasses never go unfilled, used dishes are removed almost immediately and your selections appear exactly on time.
