This is a little hidden gem in the Wells Fargo building downtown. It's excellent for those who work in the building for quick and easy access to breakfast and lunch items. It also has a nice large outdoor patio area that's perfect for a sunny San Diego day. What I particularly appreciate is the friendly service, especially Elena at the register as she remembers people's names for that personal touch. I will say that prices have gone up and the size of the breakfast burrito seems to have gotten a little smaller but understandable and in line with all other eating establishments. But the burritos are still large and it usually covers me for both breakfast and lunch. As I mentioned, they are super fast! Not only with placing your order but the food prep as well, I'm usually in and out within 5 min. I've been coming to the Plaza Deli for years, so this review is very overdue. I haven't had a bad anything here. Everything is always very fresh and delicious. The owners and staff are very accommodating and courteous. They take the time to get to know their customers (when there's time because they get busy). The recently had remodeling done, so the deli has a larger sitting area. You have 3 options for sitting, the lobby/entrance area, very nice and comfortable, inside the deli, and an outside patio. I am sad to say that our office will be moving to another building next year, so I'm glad I get this chance to enjoy their food before that move happens. Thank you Plaza Deli for being there for me for the last 16 years. I appreciate your kindness to your customers. It's been great. One of the best delis in Downtown San Diego located is in an unlikely location, the 3rd floor of the Wells Fargo Building. The sandwiches are reasonably priced and come out literally 10 seconds after you order. The owners treat everyone like family and even remember your name. I've tried a handful of their sandwiches but once I got "#30 The Executive", I never looked back. Bacon, Avocado, Ham, Swiss Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, & Mayo. I always get it on sourdough too. Amazing quality, service, & price. I love coming here during lunch. I usually get their chicken salad sandwich & their soup of the day but I decided to try something new today & opted for their Wednesday special (loaded baked potato). It was delicious! The prices are also very reasonable $9.75 for this giant potato with chili. They do charge you 50 cents for credit card but bring cash if that bothers you. You can also order online & pickup in store most items, not the daily specials though idk why. It would be cool if we could order ahead the specials. read more

Plaza Deli is pretty much exactly what you want from a downtown, work lunch deli spot -- good sandwiches and salads at fair prices. It also holds the record for the most meals I have ever eaten from a place without actually setting food in the restaurant, as my we always order Plaza Deli for delivery. Like many of these kinds of places, you kind of find what you like and stick with it. In my case, that would be the Plaza and San Franciscan sandwisches and the cobb salad (and occasionally some chili as well). In all cases, they give you a TON of food. Honestly, the sandwiches are almost two meals, even before you throw in some accompanying chips or the aforementioned chili. While admittedly you can find better quality meat elsewhere, for a place like this, the lunches are more than satisfying. The Plaza is filled with turkey, bacon, and avocado, and they don't skip on any of it. The San Franciscan is a lovely marriage of turkey, salami, and Italian dressing (among other things) that works amazingly well. The cobb salad is very large, quite filling, and most definitely satisfying. I also like that they carry a large selection of chips -- I'm partial to the Hawaiian. The chili is surprisingly good as well, especially with the added cheese and onions. So in short, if you are working downtown, Plaza Deli is a great place to stop for an inexpensive sandwich or salad. I also appreciate that they are always extremely prompt in delivery, usually beating out all the other restaurants we order delivery from. read more

What a hidden gem. A friend and I were recently in town for a conference and wanted to find a great deli for sandwiches. The Plaza Deli delivered! We were a few blocks away and after finding our way to the third floor of the Wells Fargo building, after a little looking around, we found the Plaza Deli. (After you come off the elevator, it is behind the coffee stand) Arriving just after noon, there was a short line which moved quickly. I had the Californian (turkey, Swiss, bacon and avocado on sourdough) while my friend had the Club (turkey, ham, bacon, swiss cheese, american cheese, lettuce, tomato & mayo). We both really enjoyed the sandwiches and the reasonable prices. My only suggestion would be for more tables. While there were eight or so tables for either two or four people, some folks were camping out on the tables after having finished lunch looking at their phones. We ended up waiting about 10 minutes to get a table. Folks...be considerate of other customers. If you have finished your lunch and you see multiple people standing there waiting for a table, don't sit there for 10 minutes looking at your phone. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't appreciate it either. The Plaza Deli gets five stars in my book. Check it out!! read more

Every time I'm in downtown during lunch I hit Plaza Deli. "The fastest sandwiches in the west." The sandwiches here are so good, like a better version of Board and brew. I hadn't seen Cindy at the front in years and she remembered my face and is very personable. I always make the mistake of ordering two sandwiches. I eat the first one in like 2 seconds and get super full off the first bite of the second sandwich. God bless leftovers. Amen. I've had a lot of breakfast burritos, but Plaza Deli's Super Burrito kills the competition hands down. Most places have some sort of pre-cooked, microwaved bacon in their burritos which makes my heart cry tears of pain and anguish. And they always seem to over do it with the potatoes and cheese to cover up their meat inadequacies. On the other hand, one bite into Plaza Deli's Super Burrito will take you to a magical world packed with breakfast sausage and CRISPY made to order bacon. I literally stopped mid-bite because I was so shocked. Another thing that impressed me were the short order cooks. There were four working in the kitchen for breakfast and my order didn't take longer than 3 minutes to prepare. You'll be hard pressed to find quicker service outside of a pho joint. The rest of the menu looks extremely good too, and there's nothing on said menu over $6.00. Definitely take the time to queue up at Plaza Deli for a quick bite. I have fond memories of the plaza deli. Since I worked in this building and I was an intern aspiring for career glory back in the day, often I worked through lunch. Going to the plaza deli helped me achieve those goals. How? I never had to leave the building as - oddly - the Plaza Deli is on the third floor. I still don't understand how a kitchen was situated on the 3rd floor. Going to work was magnificent. The elevators would be filled with that wonderful scent of bacon, a beacon of breakfast delight wafting through every floor I imagined. I also knew that if you didn't get their early enough, how silly is it to think a line would form from out of the deli and into the elevator foyer of the 3rd floor. Yeah, they were that good and definitely popular. So popular, that they had the monopoly on catering for the building's lunch meetings. Along with their catered sandwiches and delicious cookies for lunch meetings, breakfast burritos and salads was a large portion of my diet then with a complement of beer in the evenings, but that's a different story. I am sure that despite their inherent monopoly, they would do well with a regular storefront out on 4th Avenue and still make a killing. read more
