After spending stretches of localdom at many a Fox Point dive, I have finally found the elusive 'home.' The point falls into the rare category of 'know what you are and do it well' in the ever-evolving battlefield of Providence watering holes. The Point nails the three key categories of dive bar evaluation. First off, the menu is a refreshing variety of delicious brews, wines, and liquors priced at a point that won't leave you burning your weekly fun money for a few rounds. No food, but BYOF from any of Wickenden's diverse eateries (or order directly from the Duck & Bunny at the bar). After dumping a small portion of a mortgage into completing my beer card at Wickenden pub, a 10 dollar tab is a breath of fresh oxygen into my crippled financial lungs. Oh, and they have absinthe. Second, we've got a quaint, dark, and sleek ambiance accentuation; both inside and out. I'm personally a fan of sitting at the bar when inside, but I've been spending the majority of my weekly kickback-seshes on the back patio. Around back you'll find a few metal tables propped on a gravel patio, adorned with string lights and umbrellas for all. As with all Fox Pointers, the feel captures the residential, backyard setting to a T. Side note to the people that live above the bar: Is it awesome? Does it suck? Is my laugh as obnxious as they say? Can we be friends? And after my digression - Thirdly, the service. Crystal is a joy and muddles up a killer Old Fashioned with that friendly neighborhood attitude. Myself and my friends have become a bit of weekly regulars and she makes the spot that much more to the far end of the awesome spectrum. The other bartenders on other nights are equally as spot-on. So - this is what once was Abe's. It was sold a a few months ago to one of the owners of the community bar, Round the Corner, around Ives. It is "The Point". It now has two signs in the windows. The lights are brighter. The music is louder. The music selection was shifted to what I consider 'easy listening'. Depending on the night I've been - some new bartenders (a one-time experience, but worth mentioning: new bartenders that say "Got it!" to a wine and beer and then 15 minutes later you go back and they realize they forgot to act on your order). No more 20% off United (former owner of Abe's still does own that) BUT - they do have food from Duck and Bunny next door! That is the one addition that I'm really okay with. Surprisingly, much of the same crowd. But also a lot of 'fresh faces'. Fresh as in they should have been carded. And shots all around at the table next to us. I still like what used to be Abe's. But I miss the dim lights, the softer music you could have a conversation over. I miss it feeling like a place you could relax and spend quality time with good and random people, instead of a place you crawled through that screams of a bar on Pine Street. First no one was there when I walked in. The Bartender was rude right off. She said make a reservation on line and just so you know it makes you wait 20 min out. All I asked was so if we just want to have drinks do we still wait 20 min. She says yup everyone has to. We said ok no worries and we turned around to leave because she had a rude attitude. She says no matter where you go it's the same everywhere. Good luck! Nice customer service and that's why there was no one in there. Wandered in out of the cold with 75 and Frank the tank in tow for an early evening cocktail or 6 and maybe some eats at the Point Tavern on Wickenden St. Nate the bartender was very accommodating and friendly. started out with a couple beers of which they have a nice local selection of crafts on tap or in the bottle. After wards i experimented with a grapefruit mule and some other concoctions. All well done by Nate. The menu is not big but its interesting-had an order of the pub cheese and chips-the cheese was warm and tasty and homemade chips. AND they have BACON! like as an appetizer. i think we ate 3 orders of it. I know but pork is my kryptonite. 75 and Tank opted for the churico sandwich on ciabatta with a fried egg. They called it outstanding. Me being a simple sort of slump i had the hot dog special-two large saugys on toasted buns with mustard. Great! hit the spot. Good booze, good eats, good bartender and a friendly crowd= a fine little pub. NOTE: My only regret was not being able to get the Celts game at the bar (no TV) BUT in the larger dining room there was a TV showing He-Man cartoons so that's a wash. 4 stars, solid. read more

Over the last few months that I have lived in Providence, I have been keeping an eye out for a good local bar. It seems that The Point might be just the bar I have been looking for. The prices are are reasonable but not dirt cheap either. The clientele is a nice mix of white collar/ blue collar and everything in between. I am a big whiskey fan and I was happy to see a few whiskies that most bars don't normally cary. Overall The point is a great local bar where you can easily spend a full night or meet up with friends for a drink before heading out for the night. This is a great bar to come with a group of people and hang out. It's casual, usually space for a group, and has a patio out back. They have good food (Great Northern BBQ is serving out of here now) and I'm pretty sure the kitchen is open late (midnight maybe?) which is a huge plus. Service has always been super friendly. They really pride themselves on mixed drinks which is not something I expected from what appears to be a basic pub, but they do make some awesome drinks!! Music selection is also usually on point. I have really enjoyed this place every time I've been. Why 4 stars instead of 5? The beer selection. It's inconsistent and they have some weird (bad) choices and often times the beers on tap all skew hoppy. I get that IPAs are popular, but I would be happy to see them add a really great non-IPA or two. read more

I haven't been to this bar since it was Babe's. That's right - not Abe's. Babe's on the Sunny Side, where I started my illustrious drinking career in the 90s. Back then it was a tiny, dark dive with a pool table and wicked cheap beer. I'm not sure what kind of paradise-on-earth Abe's was, but to call The Point Tavern a dive tells me you haven't been in too many actual dive bars. The Point Tavern has a nice interior and some good beer on tap. It seems like it's trying to come off as slightly upscale without being snooty or unaffordable. The bartender was nice and the crowd seemed to be mostly in their late 20s and 30s. It wasn't too crowded on a Sunday night, but wasn't empty either. I'm not on the East Side often, but I'm going to try to put The Point Tavern into my regular rotation. read more

So, I was an extremely loyal patron of this bar when it was Abe's. It was, in many respects, the perfect bar. Since it's been taken over and re-named, it's disappointed me repeatedly. The cocktail menu, which was once lengthy, witty and original, is now short, bland and uninteresting. (I can get an espresso martini at Viva if I'm really craving it.) No more house-infused liquors, no more United BBQ, and the prices are too high. (A $9 martini was justifiable when Abe's was the only place in the world I could get one like it. RIP, Franz Kafka Fishbowl.) The clientele, which had trended towards the mid-twenties crowd, is now significantly older. The music is louder and the lights on the inside are much brighter (not to mention the tacky Christmas lights that have been installed.) Some of the bartenders from Abe's are still there, but the newer staff is rushed and surly. In short, save for the interior design, which is still (mostly) classy, this place is tragically becoming just another Fox Point dive bar. I'll be at WickPub. read more

This place is heaven compared to its neighbor, Wickenden Pub. The Point has a lively atmosphere filled with customers ranging from 21 to 51, but it works. A pretty good spot for a date, as it's neither too dark nor too quiet. It can get a bit loud, but otherwise it was more than bearable. The liquor and beer selection was extensive. **BBC Russian Imperial Stout** is awesome. I was reluctant to try it, as I don't like stouts and am reminded of drinking Guinness Draught (aka dirt!) when I do so. But this, this was smooth and delicious. Despite the fact it was busy on a weekday, my date and I still found two empty seats at the bar. Bathrooms were clean as was the establishment itself. I recommend this place if you are bar hopping in the area or just passing by looking for a new place to try. read more

After waiting 10 minutes to get a beer on a weds night (not busy) the bartender poured me a Guinness. It was $8.11 for one Guinness..... This is Providence who charges that for one Guinness??? The Point Tavern is my favorite bar in Providence. The bartenders are super friendly and knowledgeable. They can talk your ear off about every bottle in the place if you wanted. Dave makes a killer martini every time. They have well priced local beers, and even some local whiskey, but I wouldn't recommend that! The crowd that visits this place is super friendly. If you're looking for a place to have a drink but always feel awkward going somewhere alone, The Point is for you. There is only one TV, but its usually never on. Overall, I haven't noticed as large of a negative change from Abe's as the other reviewers have noted. Yes, the music is a little bit more bland, which is sad but seems to be typical of Fox Point bars in general. If I wanted to walk to a place with good music, Abe's wasn't my destination before, and the Point hasn't changed that. The new cocktail menu is very boring, but I have had no trouble ordering cocktails off the old menu (Flirtini mmmm!)... although perhaps I've just gotten lucky and have been served only by bartenders from "before". The beers on draft have gotten more thumbs up from my beer-drinking friends than they used to. So, goes from a 5- to a 4- star.. but if I do have some negative experiences with the new bartenders, it may go down more. read more

Really happy to have found this place! A friend had a birthday get-together here on a Saturday night and it was lovely. Refreshingly classy space with what seemed like fairly new furnishings, awesome bartender, and solid cocktails. The beer selection seemed really solid and I know my friends were pleased with their beers. I was in the mood for a cocktail and ordered one from their martini menu. I forget the name of it, but it had lime and St. Germain. It was strong and tasty- so I ended up ordering another cocktail later, the Honey Pot. I would definitely come here and order cocktails again. It's not like cocktails are their specialty, and I'm actually pretty picky about cocktails (my pet peeve is when they're watered down with mixers). So it was a pleasant surprise that they were so good! The only downside was that it filled up quickly and became so loud that pretty soon my friends and I were shouting to one another, even though we were sitting only a few feet apart. I lost my voice by the time we left! That hasn't happened since I went to a concert. read more

I love this place and always come when I'm in the area. They make very good mixed drinks. The thing that keeps me from giving five stars is that they allow smoking on their outdoor patio--both tobacco and marijuana. I'm quite inexperienced when picking out bars since I'm not much of a beer drinker, however, what I do look for when I'm out and about is a place that can serve up a good mixed drink. I chose The point after reading some glowing reviews, however, upon actually ordering the drinks, I was very disappointed by the quality. The bartender was very nice, and I ended up trying the French Whiskey Cocktail and the fruitier cocktail (in which the name eludes me). The whiskey was good, however, the other cocktail was poorly mixed and way too alcoholic and left a terrible aftertaste in which I had to give up my whiskey to finish that drink for my girlfriend instead. If it weren't for that drink, the overall experience would have been a little more pleasant. The ambiance is quite decent, with a mix between a date night and friends outing. This is without a doubt, my favorite bar in providence. We discovered it by walking around one night, coincidentally right around the time they first opened. The main bartender, who I think is named Dave, is great. He is always up for recommending a good beer, and he is quick to comment on all of the drinks on their menu - he is the epitome of what I think a bartender should be - and he also has great taste in music (see below). What I like about the point the most is that it strikes a great balance between classy, and a place that I can go relax and have a few drinks. Think of a good cross between the Avery and your favorite neighborhood bar. A few years ago on new years eve they had a catered dinner for everyone that came in - perfect. The music selection here is also top notch. The volume is always at the point where you can't hear other peoples conversations, but you can always hear your own. And whenever there is a pause in said conversation, I always find myself saying "Oh this song? YES." Go in, get a drink, enjoy the occasion, and keep going back. Its worked for me. read more

Came here during Rhode Island Pride, a big event in the middle of the city less than a mile away. I mention this because I would imagine they would be anticipating a lot of business on a night where there's a lot of local foot traffic. Drinks were good--ginger mules. Food was fine--two sandwiches that took forever to order, and even longer to arrive. While my partner ordered at the door of the kitchen (apparently their ordering protocol), I made my way to the patio. There were 5 tables--3 were covered in dirty plates and cups, 1 that was taken up by an unplugged microwave, and the last table was taken up by three employees, who are clearly disgruntled with another colleague or their boss. While I'm not going to judge frustrated employees complaining on a break, I was honestly surprised by their volume, the way they talk about the person's mental health, and how many times they used the words fuck and shit in front of customers. It feels like I'm eavesdropping on something private. When my partner came outside (after waiting 20 mins to order) we cleared old cups off of one of the tables. It's hilarious to sit at this table now and listen to them talk about how this coworker they despise never busses tables...while we are bussing other peoples' used dish ware. Maybe all of their patio tables aren't bussed because of the person they're talking about, maybe not. Regardless, this conversation definitely seems unprofessional and makes me uncomfortable. It's made worse by the fact that the patio tables are straight up dirty while employees are sitting nearby, talking about how important it is for servers like themselves to take initiative. If we hadn't already paid for food (two sandwiches), I would definitely leave. read more

This place is beautiful inside and the bartender was super friendly, chatting about the history of the location and suggesting appetizers and drinks. The apps are on the pricey side, but we lucked out by making this one of our first stops of the evening, so we hit the half price app period. We tried the pulled pork slider, which was quite tasty on the pretzel roll. It comes with a house pickle, which is sweet... fair warning! The empanada was just ok. The point pizza was definitely tasty -- probably wouldn't pay the full price for it, though. I would stop in here again for drinks. read more

Love to grab a beer here after dinner on Wickenden but had a grapefruit-gin cocktail that was really delicious as well. I always feel welcome here, even when I'm bringing in food from various businesses, including the time we brought in gelato from down the street. I've always been greeted with a smile and a great drink. I will keep coming back when I'm looking for a beverage in an atmosphere that is somewhere other than Duck and Bunny or Wick pub. I came here with a group of people on a Saturday afternoon to grab a drink before we headed to another location for dinner. What I found really cool is that they had a whole section of their drink menu devoted to mojitos. You wouldn't expect to associate a tavern with great mojitos, but the one I had did not disappoint. There were at least 5 different flavors and you could also get them frozen if you want. It's not often you can get a good mojito this far up North, but I would recommend trying it out. We didn't stay that long so I am sure there are other great things about this place too but wanted to highlight this unique find. read more
