Went for Valentines Day dinner. Ordered King cut prime rib mid rare. When it arrived I could tell before even cutting into it that it was over cooked, but I thought what the heck it looked like a beautiful cut of meat. Unfortunately not only was it under cooked it was ice cold. I sent it back. The one they brought to replace it was slightly better cooked but was about 60% gristle and still not hot. I didn't bother sending this one back. My wife got the salmon which was so fishy tasting it was inedible. The waitress was great, but not great enough to make this $150 excursion worth it. read more

My husband and I were visiting the area for our vacation. We decided to have dinner here because they allow dogs on their deck and we have a Yorkshire Terrier. The view from this restaurant was beautiful, and the company I dined with was spectacular!!! With that said most everything else was a grave disappointment. The entrees were mediocre at best and our server seemed inexperienced and was floundering with too many tables. The worst of the evening was witnessing whom I assumed to be the dining room manager (I believe "Kathy" communicating to our server and the bussers with unprofessionalism and disdain! We were disgusted and will not support a business that tolerates that type of behavior from management. To the Owners, managerial training might help this woman, or perhaps a demotion to a busser position to remember how hard they work. Best of Luck! read more

Service was great! The restaurant had a few different dining areas, we were in the main with wonderful panoramic views of the mountain range and a perfect place to be and watch a sunset. The food there was good and bad. The bad was the bread they brought to the table it was so dry it broke apart when you tried to cut off a piece or butter it with their maple butter. We asked the waitress if we could get a different loaf which was a fresh baked loaf and was yummy. My husband got the two types of BBQ, brisket and pulled pork with beans and coleslaw. The beans were very good, delicious! Pulled pork was good, the brisket over cooked and dry, it was like the pieces were pre cut. If anyone knows about keeping it juicy, all you have to do is cut it off the brisket itself right before serving. The coleslaw was good. I had the salad bar, nothing stands out on the salad bar your normal stuff, I was disappointed with the crab cakes which were small and not very tasty ( this coming from a person who has had quite a few crab cakes in her time). After dinner we had coffee, which was good and shared a piece of key lime pie that my southern husband didn't think it had enough lime kick to it. read more

My mom, girlfriend and I had a good meal here. Based on what we had, we collectively thought the fool wad good but maybe not excellent. The atmosphere and service were very good. I will focus on the positive and say we loved the salad bar, the warm brie, the honey bread with walnut butter and were very impressed with the key lime pie. I will also add that our server Emma had an amazing smile and was great at her job-she is an asset to The Publyk House. Oh yeah, I also had a very tasty glass of Sangria here. This place is clearly a local institution and while not perfect probably needs a little time to deal with all that restaurants have been dealing with between inflation and staffing issues. I would go back to support a lovely place like this if I was back in the area. Which reminds me, there is so much to see and do in the area. We literally bumped into two covered bridges while looking for another specific one. Bennington really is a beautiful place and I hope to come back to the Publyk House some Fall or Winter when they have a few of their fireplaces going...but in the Summer there is always the deck and that incredible view. read more

The warm bread with maple butter is addictive. Full bar with lots of special drinks, and a decent enough wine list. Vermont cheddar mac n' cheese makes a tasty appetizer. One night we had a reservation, and the other night we did not, but it was hopping both nights so recommend calling ahead and make sure they can accommodate you. read more

Rude host had said I good have a window seat when I maid my reservation said no problem when I got there we were put against a wall when I told the host were supposed to have a window seat she said there wasn't any when I pointed out some she said they were reserved then an other host came and told use very rude that there was no window seats available when we left the window seats that she claimed where reserved where still empty an hour and a half later and the food was not that great I had the shrimp scampi which if had before and this time it was terrible my husband meal was not that great either when went there to celebrate are 42 anniversary and it was not a great experience and the prices have gone crazy read more

Loved the warm New England styled interior with all the hewn wood, massive windows to take in the beautiful Green Mountain View's, and the cozy field stone fireplaces. Ample seating for larger groups. Not noisy despite being a busy Friday night. The salad bar reminded me of the 1980s style that was once popular. Many fresh option like mixed greens, English cucumbers, sprouts and traditional favorites like pickled beets, Mac salad, & real bacon bits. The bartender made a solid Old Fashioned and a cranberry gin mule. The steaks are huge and perfectly cooked to your preference. I loved my traditional Thanksgiving tender turkey breast, real cranberry compote, & creamy mashed potatoes. The portion so large it provided the following days lunch. I really dug this place. The food was good. It's fairly meat heavy (which makes sense for a steakhouse), but everything I've tasted on their menu that is vegetarian-friendly was satisfying. The stone kitchen pasta surprisingly shines. The mac & cheese is fairly simple. The breadcrumbs give it a nice little crunch, although a bit more seasoning would take it to the next level. The ravioli is somehow both light and decadent simultaneously (just be careful with the wine sauce that settles to the bottom). I like the fact that they have a salad bar with your entrees, but, if money isn't a concern, I'd recommend going with a salad on the menu. But, let's all be honest. What you're really paying for here is the view. It's perfect for an early dinner just before sunset. And even the window view from indoors is a nice option during the colder weather or a packed out deck. All and all, this place is well worth the price and the drive. 4.5 out of 5 read more

We have not been to the Publyk House in 10 years and good things have not happened in that time. The prices have gone way up. We waited an hour before our entrees arrived, but some of that was because my fish was burned and our waitress sent it back. Good call. However, with that long wait, management should have offered us something like a complementary hors d'oeuvre or round of drinks, but our waitress was just left to apologize. The fish in fish and chips should be moist and flaky, not hard and dry. They knew it was my birthday, yet no recognition, singing or cupcake with a candle. Atmosphere is awesome with soft music in the background and the food is always great. The warm bread with maple butter, salad bar and I had the Cannon Fire combo tonight. An 8oz sirloin and a bacon wrapped stuffed chicken breast. Side of mixed veggies and I chose wild rice. It was Delicious! Cooked to perfection and well Seasoned. He got the king cut prime rib same sides was just as yummy! Finished it by sharing molten chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream. For drinks he had switchback and I had the summertime lemonade (watermelon vodka and pink lemonade Garnished with watermelon pieces) yes the cost a little more than other places but so worth it. Delicious! We decided to come here for dinner because it was super close to where we were staying.. plus the menu looked scrumptious! The service was really nice! And they have amazing views if you sit outside. We sat inside though since it looked like rain. I had a hard lemonade type drink and we got some coconut shrimp which really hit the spot! For our meals my daughter had the mozzarella stick platter, I had the baked cod and my husband had the grilled chicken with pineapple. Everything was so good and I would come back in a heartbeat! Went to dinner here last night for the first and last time. Wow. We were sat at what seemed to be a clean table. I grabbed my napkin to place bbn in my lap and when the waitress dropped the menus, I attempted to move my silverware out of the way, but they were stuck to the table. My partner tried to move her's and the spoon was stuck too and ended up popping off and landed on the floor. We ordered drinks and an appetizer to start. The bay breeze must have only gotten a wave of rum over the top. The wine was pedestrian, but whatever. It's not like this place has any type of list anyway. The crab cake was just okay, but there was a silver ramekin with bad Cole slaw on the side. What?? Cole slaw? I had to try it and it was beyond its serve by date that must have been on the Sysco container. Entrees......I ordered pork scallopini with a spinach mustard sauce. Please rename the menu item. It was a shot at schnitzel or Milanese but clearly it missed. The mustard spinach concoction at least had fresh and not frozen spinach used, but the sauce was right out of a salad dressing bottle. A side of zucchini and summer squash on the plate wasn't even expected or told by the waiter and obviously cold and flavorless. Why? Why? Just make it with an adequate amount of spinach and for crying out loud Google a whole grain mustard sauce if the chef has no clue how to make one. Partner got the grilled pork ribeye with an apple something on top and mashed potatoes. In all that is holy, why would a chef put this in the window with pride and send this to a table? First. This is Vermont, right? Apples grow in trees here! The apple diarrhea on top of the pork came from a can that I'm sure was labeled pie filling. Second. The mashed potatoes were so dry that when a fork hit the rock pile, some of it shot off the plate like a stick of dynamite does to a side of a mountain. Same unflavored squash on her plate too. Dont look for a review of dessert here. Momma didn't raise no dummy. We took a hard pass at that. How embarrassed I felt for the culinary world I live in and have given 40 years to. This chef and owners have given up on any pride of their craft. Obviously it is just a tourist trap and cateres to a public who deserves so much better than this. The pricing is so outrageous for what hits the plate that you are better off spending your money at a fast food place and enjoying that food in your car. Owners of this establishment, I am offering you 2 hours of free consulting if you can swallow some pride and take my help. I'm sure this will most likely go untaken, but hopefully chef will look at his plates and change for the better after this read. Streamline the menu. Make it cohesive. Use fresh local food from this amazing state and tell your customers where it comes from. Cook from scratch. I would love to help you. read more

The atmosphere is pretty but for some reason, we couldn't get a seat by the window even though people left soon after I was seated. The artichoke dip was pretty good but a bit greasy. The shrimp scampi was quite creamy. However the lobster bisque had 3 small pieces of lobster and was WAY too creamy, there was no lobster flavor but mostly cream. The portion sizes are large so we took quite a bit home with us. The butter that is maple-flavored is very powerful and I wouldn't recommend it unless you love maple syrup. The service was good, although I would've recommended the hostess to let us know we could wait 5-10min for a seat by the window, rather than seating us immediately. We just stopped by Bennington to eat, so I have no comparison for the area and their other restaurants. I would recommend this place for a simple meal but dont expect to be impressed. read more

Ate here for dinner. 4 stars for the atmosphere, the salad bar and our server Paul who allowed us to change our table near a window. He got busy when a bus load of people came but all good. My steak frites was good and cooked right. I gave my potatoes to hubby he said it was delicious. Hubby and sister in law had stuffed chicken, sister said it was good, hubby said it was on the dry side. Hubby love the maple butter and asked for seconds. Went about a month ago and the rest of my weekend was ruined bc I got sick. What is that orange sauce comprised of anyway. Velveeta? Yuck. Not sure how they store their seafood but a few other friends said they became ill after ordering seafood there as well. Steak was rare as I asked. Rice was tasteless and undercooked. How though? Had issues with service at another place close by - So looked up others on our route home. This place did not disappoint! Views fantastic, waitress adorable friendly and informative. Then the appetizers to the meals top notch! My man got the turkey dinner, I got the bacon wrapped chicken. The only wish I had was a little more creamy topping for the chicken- I love condiments! We will be back and already referred family and friends and it's only been a day! We've been coming here for years which is why we kind of "overlooked" the head manager's gruff treatment as just being part of her personality. With that being said, we dined last week and had the final straw. The food has been steadily declining and the prices steadily increasing but since we love(d) it here we didn't want to leave because of the economy being out of the restaurant's control. During our dining experience, we encountered an issue and when I went up from to ask (I believe her name is Kathy) a question, I heard her talking about me to the other waitstaff!! She was unaware that I was standing off to the side and didn't see me approach. I corrected her and called her out (in a nice way) and she brushed it right off. No apology either! Just an excuse as to why she felt it necessary to comment about me. I have never been mistreated this way during a dining experience and I've been to many establishments. The owners should SERIOUSLY consider a new head waitstaff manager to represent their business. This woman is clearly burned out, mean spirited, and over it. We will NOT be returning. I am a sucker for old school American restaurants that still offer a baked potato or rice and a salad with everything. The brie with walnuts and maple syrup was great. My wife ordered the baked cod, which could have been a greasy mess, but was perfectly executed and much lighter than expected. Me? I got the turkey dinner and transported to Thanksgiving.
