I've had my eye on this diner for years because it's always packed, which is usually a good sign. The classic train-car setup and nostalgic décor make it feel like stepping back in time. We lucked out when we arrived and snagged the last open booth. Service was quick, with our drinks and food arriving fast, and I loved seeing a selection of hot sauces right on the table. Not pictured is the cinnamon roll we split because it was too good to wait for a photo. The Texas burrito and chili got rave reviews from my dining partner, and my omelette was solid, though interestingly assembled. The fillings were layered rather than chopped and mixed throughout. Ok first I love old roadside Americana when traveling. The Blue Benn was a pleasant find for lunch. The locals obviously live it as it was full and folks waiting outside for a seat as it is a true diner with little room for anyone not seated at the counter or the tables. The waitstaff was pleasant and helpful with my wife's allergy needs and the menu had something for everyone. My pastrami sandwich wasnt great as it was rather chewy but thats a risk anywhere i've ordered it. I just wasnt in a burger or turkey club mood. Fries were excellent hand cut hot and crisp! Lots of pie choices and it all looked scrumptious but we opted to drive off for a Maple creemee nearby. Yep i would stop here again. And get the pie! read more

So I'm not a Vermonter and definitely not a Benningtonian...actually my first trip to Vermont visiting friends. Was kinda shocked to see a diner and even more shocked when I drove up and was transported back in time. Like this is a real old time diner with the counter and stools and juke boxes at the tables! What a pleasant surprise. The best part of course was the service AND the food. The food was excellent and the portion sizes were hefty hefty hefty. I did the bagel melt with bacon instead of ham and they did it up right!! I ate every morsel including the mildly seasoned well cooked home fries. The bagel had the right toasted crunch to it, the sandwich was not oily and thus my clothes were spared. The egg was perfectly fried and the bacon lover in me was in heaven because it was not salty and my extra bacon was the right portion. My friend's plate was also done well and he ate every bit. I took off one star for the following: The booths are not for us larger people and so it was quite a squeeze (in and out) and I should have sat on a counter stool but that did not look any more comfortable for the tush. Also, the entrance was not ramped and thus not handicapped accessible. Otherwise, I would have given the place a 5 and if ever in Vermont again, will definitely stop by...I may even go by again before I leave the state. Great meal and experience. read more

Amazing little diner!!! For starters, the interior was very quaint and mostly original, the bathrooms were very clean, (something you don't always get with diners). The staff were also very friendly, you could tell they put passion into the food they made and the service they gave. The chicken fajita omelette was amazing, very well cooked and flavorful with some good hot sauce. The home fries were amazing as well, very fresh. This is our third time in the area, once again our meal was fabulous, I should've but I did order a piece of coconut cream pie, and I have to say it was absolutely amazing. I've not tasted coconut cream pie that good since I was a child and my mother used to make it homemade. This diner is very cute and the staff does an outstanding job. "If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It!" The restaurant was built in 1948 in New Jersey as a railroad dining-car styled restaurant and was moved here in the 1950s. Not much has changed. They have a HUGE menu and it seemed like most of the folks in here at 7 am on a weekday were locals. Which was just fine for me. It was pretty quiet so the waitress didn't mind me sitting in a booth by myself. When I left an hour later, it still wasn't that busy. I looked over the menu, looked over the jukebox (Johnny Cash, Lee Greenwood and Garth Brooks on the same page?) before ordering an omelet. Quickly prepared and served with delicious toast and amazing home fries. Very well stuffed omelet and yes, I did eat a couple of the potatoes because I couldn't help myself. Not to be dramatic but this was the best diner experience I've ever had in my life! They have a small waiting area and will let you know when a booth is ready for the next party. They also have seats at the counter that you can help yourself to if available. We decided to order a lot since the locals we met waiting said this place is amazing. The inside is very cute and cozy. A cozy place to get breakfast and yeah, it will get really cozy in the mornings so plan accordingly. It was a Sunday morning so I waited 30-40 minutes before getting sat down simply because there were no seats left even at the counter. I even watched some childish people argue over one of the chairs. People must really like the food here. Service was quick despite being extremely busy and this diner served diner quality food. So yes it was nothing special but that's what diners are for. I expect this and nothing else. Good job. My biscuits and gravy tasted just like how it does when the Army serves it in the dining facility. I approved of this meal. No shortage of sausage and the gravy wasn't too thick. Biscuits were dry enough to soak up this gravy so it all works out very well. My eggs were eggs. Again, no secrets here. The only secret was my girlfriend's omelet. She asked for Swiss Cheese and she barely got any. From the outside you would hope it was one of those omelets where the surprise is inside the box as you can see, it just looks like a plain egg. There was no shortage of bacon and spinach however, the cheese did look a little light for anyone's liking. It looks like it was sprinkled into the egg like a dash of salt. I'm sure being extremely busy with a long line of people waiting to be seated could have been a factor but it only takes a second. Hopefully this was a one time thing. Other than that, Blue Benn is busy for a reason! Local favorite and tourists can't find anywhere else to eat in the morning. In addition to its historic "New England" vibe, the Blue Benn serves top notch food. Parking can be tight. Sometimes there's a few people in the lobby waiting for a booth, but since I always sit at the counter this is not a problem for me as there is usually at least one open spot at the counter. Service is generally pretty good. Sometimes the wait staff can lose attention or be crabby, but this is the exception. Because of dietary restrictions, I stick to home fries and oatmeal for breakfast. Home fries are excellent and have the right amount of seasoning. The oatmeal is the whole-grain style. I've had a few other things off the breakfast menu, and all have been good. I have not had lunch there, so I can't comment on that. Prices are fair. My wife really wanted to eat breakfast at this diner. Since it was 3 1/2 hours away, we ended up there at lunch. The diner is small and we had to wait about 5 minutes for a booth. There were many seats available at the counter. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. I had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a homemade biscuit. I skipped the two eggs since this was lunch. My wife had the Blue Benn Nut Burger. Our food came out fairly fast and my plate had a lot of food, more than I could eat. The taste of everything was very good, especially the gravy. The chicken was a little dry but nice and crispy. However, my wife did not like her dish at all. The nut burger was like a giant falafel set on a bed of lettuce and onions. It literally fell apart when touched with a fork. I tried it and had trouble keeping it in my fork. There were far too many onions with the lettuce so she didn't eat that. My lunch was a four-star and my wife's was a two-star lunch. That's how I arrived at three stars. read more

I was on the tail end of a summer hiking trip to NH a few weeks back and finished with a drive through of Bennington. All I wanted was breakfast comfort food and Blue Benn was at the top of every list. I ordered a little bit of everything to go, delicious all around but I found the blueberry pancakes a bit too dense and dry for my tastes. The biscuits and potatoes and everything else more than made up for it. The chicken fried steak and gravy was fantastic! This is a very retro fun place. I normally don't like a place that has a stop sign on the door and a note that says - don't come in, we'll let you know when there is a booth. It's kind of cold and rude right off the get. I guess they have their reasons. So I of course peeked in to see if there would be a table soon because it was close to closing time. The waitress was immediately annoyed. People must do that all of the time but oh well. When a booth opens no one comes to the door - they just yell - a booth is set! Again sort of cold and rude. The food is pretty good. There are old time juke boxes on each table. They work! When you play Jolene - all of the granola college girl customers sing along. It's fun. I wish I could try more things. Once seated, our service was super quick and our waitress was really nice. Our food was DELICIOUS. I got the ham and cheese omelet and my bf got the blueberry pancakes. Being from New Jersey, I'm always eager to check out a classic Silk City diner. While the diners here are supreme, the vast majority have been expanded over time, taking away from the old railroad-car vibe. You can imagine how I felt when we pulled up to the Blue Benn. Yes, there have been adjustments made, but for the most part, the spirit of Silk City is still there. The breakfast menu is vast, and I chose to have the garden scramble, which was absolutely fantastic. My boyfriend had the classic two eggs over easy, homefries and bacon, which he pronounded as satisfying. We had to wait about twenty minutes, which our kids only agreed to do because it was Father's Day. It was a totally reasonable wait, we just hasn't read the Yelp reviews like you're doing so we couldn't warn them. The food and service were great: one son is kind of an adventurous orderer and realized too late he didn't want to eat mashed potatoes for breakfast, the other always orders chocolate chip pancakes and was happy. The on-table juke box played very weakly through a speaker in the wall -- if you concentrated, you could confirm the song you ordered was playing -- but my one complaint is the creamers on the table. As I did at his age, our ten-year-old tried to drink some and started weeping as one has gone bad. I went ahead and finished my coffee which ended in a big gelatinous goop and had the kind of knock on intestinal issues which are disastrous when you're (surprise!) meeting your in-laws after a walk in the woods with your family. Was excited to try this diner, we followed the directions on the front door to wait outside until someone comes to seat you. They expect you to use the honor system of first come first served. Well after waiting for over 25 minutes no one ever came to check on the waiting area. Another couple came into the waiting area and was told to wait for a booth or the counter was open, no wait. Well they walked in and got our table. Management could have cared less and was extremely rude. So we left having never tried their food . Enjoyed a leisurely ride to Bennington, VT today with my husband for lunch at a favorite--the renowned Blue Benn Diner--a circa 1945 railcar with booths & jukeboxes, dishing up all-day breakfast & other diner faves (Featured in Yankee Magazine and other publications etc. Named one of "15 Best Diners in New England" recently) Talk about comfort food on a chilly day, the Wed. Special of "Chicken and Biscuits" was delicious and BEST we have ever had in a restaurant. The breast meat was flavorful, moist, and tender! The biscuits were melt in your mouth good. The mashed potatoes had a homemade slightly chunky texture which was perfect. We shared the decadent Pumpkin Bread Pudding with rum flavor and devoured every bite easily. Our server, Pat, was friendly and efficient. The food is five star, but the restrooms were not. The menu is extensive and both creative and traditional.
