My family made reservations at the Publyk House a month in advance of our family reunion weekend. We arrived to find we had been located in the bar area at 4 all separate tables. The atmosphere was dark, gloomy, noisy and not at all conducive to a reunion dinner. We explained to management, that we had specifically asked for an area that our family could all sit together, converse and enjoy our meal. The only option was to push tables together in a long row, squeezing some family members up against a wall. The food was subpar and overpriced for what you received. No one was able to talk because of the thoughtless seating arrangement and placement in the BAR. The bar patrons were loud, and obnoxious with some of them staring at us and chuckling. They made it quite clear they wanted all of us to leave so they could have our table to park themselves and drink. On the way out to the parking, lot our family group encountered a drunk patron wandering outside the exit bumping into people and eventually coming to rest in a potted flower arrangement. Sorry about the 1 star rating, 1/2 a star wasn't an option. read more

I love this place every time I go! Had a 5 pm reservation for Monday evening. We sat by the large windows on the side facing the rolling mountains. This round, my boyfriend and I ordered the special app - lobster stuffed mushrooms. I had the veal scallopine with mashed potatoes and green beans. He had the special shrimp alfredo. We ended with the homemade maple walnut ice cream. We both left absolutely satisfied with our selections. I will always be back! Hoping to make another trip later this fall for more :) read more

There aren't many consistently good restaurants in this area, but you can count on Publyk House for good food and good service. They have an extensive salad bar, the bread that comes on the table is out of this world delicious, and you must save room for Nuns of Newskit cheesecake, the best in the world. read more

Well we were almost scared off from a prior review but I knew from researching that they had outdoor seating and it was a perfect evening. We arrived about 7:45 and were lucky enough to snag a table on the deck with a lovely view of sunset. Our most excellent waitress, Kathie, was prompt, courteous and had excellent suggestions. My wife had the soup & salad offering, we split the crab cake appetizer and I had the stuffed trout (a special offering that night). Out of the way place in Bennington VT. We were there on a Thursday night and it was busy, so reservations or arrive early. Rustic decor with a pleasant view if you sit in the bar. The salad bar is not extensive but high quality. Prices are relative. If your from the east coast you'll find them moderate. If from the Midwest you'll find them a bit on the high side. In either case, if you factor in the quality and service, it's an excellent restaurant and well worth the effort to find. read more

My wife and I went on a Sunday evening in July. We sat on the patio. The view was gorgeous. The host and waiter were both pleasant. Our dinner was pretty darn good too. A fun spot. Note to All: Quite a few reviewers are making idiotic comments. When writing about a place, you have to take it for what it is, and this restaurant knows what it is, and does it right. Coming from manhattan, it's an authentic place with good food, generous portions, draft beers, good service and reasonably priced. We had an excellent dinner on 11/25/13. Salmon was moist and flavorful. Husband had Baked Cod. Salad bar is very good and we got a loaf of warm bread at the table. Loved sitting near the fireplace. Came here 15 years ago with my grandparents so I have very fond memories of this restaurant. We enjoyed the view of the mountains and the food. They have a very nice salad buffet. Disappointing Mother's Day brunch. Let me start by saying that I have eaten here on other occasions and I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. But was very underwhelmed by the brunch. I had emailed them directly with questions regarding the brunch to determine if it was menu or buffet style. They responded telling me all the items that would be available on the buffet. When we arrived at 11, I was told that the two things(peel and eat shrimp and cheese board)I was most excited for, were not available until 2. I found this odd as I've been to several buffet brunches and no one else does that. The whole idea of a brunch buffet is the mixture of breakfast and lunch items. Also, I was not told that in the email. And to add insult to injury, they charged for coffee and milk. Seriously. When one pays $32 for a brunch, coffee is typically included. I could of paid $10 more for a far better brunch with unlimited mimosas at the Four Seasons. Boo. read more

I ate here for the first time in many years, and found out from dining companions that the Publyk House had been reborn under ownership by the same family that runs the Dorset Inn Bed and Breakfast. I was happily surprised to hear that, because I had stayed at the Dorset Inn and found both the accommodations and the food in the attached restaurant to be great. We had an equally good experience at the Publyk House. The food was great, with the prime ribs getting rave reviews, the salad bar was varied and fun and the tab for five people for drinks, dinner and dessert was quite fair. I had a great meal here with my family. We had a large group so we made a reservation and we're seated upon arrival. We had 2 small kids with us so we placed their order pretty quickly after arriving and got their food right away. I had the top sirloin and thought it was good, some family members had the stuffed chicken, prime rib special, and lobster mac and cheese and all really enjoyed their meals. They have a salad bar that comes with your meal and I was happy with the choices, the cleanliness and the frequent restocking. We also got a loaf of bread and it came with really delicious maple butter. We were there for a couple of hours, and while I felt like it took a while to get our meals I don't think it actually took an unreasonable amount of time (I didn't actually time it). My one and only downside was that they don't have French Onion Soup. In spite of that, I do look forward to going back! read more

How fortunate we were that The Publyk House was open for lunch as we met up with friends at this "halfway" point on a Sunday (this is a special thing as normally not open for lunch). The view from the deck was spectacular. The service was very friendly and attentive. The meal began with a small loaf of bread and maple butter which set the tone nicely. The salad bar was very fresh with lots of toppings - like how they chop things so that they are in easily eaten pieces - friend loved the broccoli salad, I loved the black bean salad. Three of us had the turkey dinner because it looked so good when we saw others have it - and it was: real mashed potatoes, generous slices of real turkey, stuffing, cranberry and gravy (which I would recommend getting on the side and putting on yourself). One friend enjoyed the lobster mac and cheese which had generous pieces of lobster in it. The gentlemen in our group got dessert - a huge portion of apple crisp and a very generous brownie sundae - both looked great but I could not eat another thing. The food was good. We held our annual family dinner there on Oct 24. We drove from Ct, Maine, New York, New Hampshire and Virginia to celebrate with our 89 year old dad. It was a disaster from the start. It obviously did not matter that we had reserved a table for 18 four weeks before and confirmed twice within that time frame (the last was the morning of the dinner). When we arrived we found we were at 2 separate tables in the bar!! The dining rooms are lovely with lovely view but the bar is dark and noisy. We spoke with the manager and were told that they have difficulty with large parties, plus we would not be able to talk very well at a long table. lol How could we talk at 2 tables????Not acceptable! Three phone calls and we were never told this. When asked why, she said she did not know who we spoke to. Also, not acceptable. They begrudgingly slid some tables together that were at varying sizes and height but still in the bar. The salad bar was a walk and it was difficult to get out of the crowded area we were in. The food was mediocre at best. No adjustment was made for the inconvenience and no offer to possibly comp us for dessert as any decent place would have done. In fact, the waitress did not offer to get us dessert menus, shejust wanted to bring the check. We had to ask for dessert menus which seemed to annoy her. The Publyk House needs a course on customer service as they obviously don't know that they work for the customer! This party of 18 will never return!! Yelp needs to add a "no star" option! read more
