So, I 've been here maybe 3 times since my original review, and always mid-week around 4 pm. Today, however, I came at 5:30 on a Friday with 5 friends. We were meeting to eat and then enjoy a band in the Lizard Lounge room within the cafe. Well, we could not get into the Lounge because all of the tables were reserved. Please know that apparently you have to book a reservation for the lounge 2 days in advance for a band night. We were seated near the entrance and got served by a new waiter - he was quite nice and accommodating. We ate and hoped to hear the band. Our bills came and we paid them and then sat for about 15 minutes to listen to the INCREDIBLY LOUD BAND PLAYING IN THE LOUNGE AT THE BACK OF THE PLACE. YES I AM SCREAMING TO DEMONSTRATE HOW LOUD THE BAND WAS AND THAT WE WERE ACTUALLY HAPPY NOT TO BE IN THE LOUNGE. Also, want to say that while our meals are usually pretty yummy tonight they were just ok. All sic of us felt a little let down. The special nachos were not great, the meatloaf - not good, the other entrees were ok. I guess it can be hit or miss here. I've had a dinner and a breakfast there over the last few days. The food is good and servings plentiful - go hungry when you go. Service varied from pretty good to excellent. The green chili chicken stew is more of a soup than a stew, but quite tasty and while a bit spicy, not overly so. For my dinner entree I had the green chili chicken enchiladas and they were very good. For dessert I had the roadhouse chocolate cake and the slice I was served while rich and moist on the inside had rather dried edges where the cake had been sliced as if it had been sitting out for a while. All the same it was delicious. For breakfast I had the huevos rancheros with scrambled eggs and with the green chili. I had a side of the turkey jalapeño sausage and that was only fair -dry and flavorless except for the peppers. I topped my midday breakfast off with a slice of carrot cake and quite honestly it was as good as I have ever had and can't recommend that strongly enough for carrot cake lovers. Service from George was absolutely exemplary! Although I had a number of friends rave about the place, I can't get overly excited about it myself. The decor was that of an old school diner and there was display of toy/child size kitchen stoves high up on a shelf in the main dining room that was unique. They said first come first serve. Spot at the bar in the back. As a courtesy I took my name off the list. So, I was visiting a very pretty lady in beautiful NM! She had to be really pretty because it was and 1800-mile trip! In this teeny tiny town of 10,000 this delightful restaurant is closing in on 600 reviews with a 4.5-star average. Can you say Whoahhhh! Atmosphere- Eclectic, whimsical and funky all come to mind. It is part restaurant, part full bar, part pastry bar, part store, and part art gallery all in all in a mis-mash that works wonderfully! I loved their chimichangas with beef, it has the best flavor until tonight. We have been customers since they appeared on Wyoming which was once a dance studio. Tonight I ordered my usual beef chimichanga with green chili, without rice or beans, only calabacitas for the sides. They put rice and beans inside the chimichanga. It was awful. No delicious flavor of the roast beef, the chili was tasteless no heat whatsoever. The guacamole was old. The staff said all burritos have everything on the inside now, no sides. I asked for "no" rice or beans and they just hid them inside. It was no good. Won't be back unless they change the policy that she said started last Tuesday. The food was okay, the menu was 80% less than it used to be with only a handful of options that we didn't go for but we were already there so we ordered. I felt there was way more alcoholic beverages than menu items which implied more bar options. It's a restaurant that's been around forever, a staple in NM where I would often recommend people to go to for their abundant options of food which is no longer. Staff is nice but I want lots of food options. I get things are way more expensive these days and that means cuts but it was still disappointing. Likely won't return. read more

It's a feast for the eyes in here, mental overload to take it all in. Andrea is waiting on us today. She's nice and attentive. Ordered a mocha latte with rich chocolate, added 2 shots, as it comes with only one shot. A hot chocolate with no whipped cream. A huevos con queso, eggs over hard, chili turkey sausage instead of bacon and the chili con queso on the side. $49.31. The pecan and cinnamon roll (topped with sugar) are huge here, as big as your face. Would have gotten the cinnamon roll if the icing was cream cheese based, that's my jam. The mocha rich chocolate was yummy. The hot chocolate is decent with the Ghirardelli chocolate, not super rich, but still not bad. The huevos ranchero here wasn't too bad, but the huevos con queso stole the show, the queso was more appealing and tasty and just as creamy to me, since I am not a fan of the hollandaise sauce much. The chili con queso sauce was good, the chili turkey sausage wasn't bad either. My hubby preferred my huevos con queso over his huevos rancheros, me too. The receipt really threw me off, the first line after the amount is for charity, then the tip and the the final total. So I'm going to talk first about the dessert because it was soo good and unique for me. I had to taste their pecan cinnamon roll. So so good. It was perfect softness. I would go back just for that. Since I knew I was going to order that goodness because you see the desserts as they sit you, I wanted something light. I ordered the shrimp tacos. They are generous with the shrimp and are regular size. It has a sauce on it that has a little kick to it but not burn your tongue off. They ask if you want the rice and beans- I ordered just the rice and I wasn't a fan of it. Too mushy for me but could be something you like. The service was good. They do have people helping to get refills, other items that you need and the person we got, needs to work on people skills. Asked, "Are you done" as opposed to, "would you like me to take this for you?" Then when I asked for my dessert, was asked, "to go?" I'm like, no.. I'm going to eat it here. The Range Cafe in downtown Bernalillo has long been a local favorite on account of a menu featuring hearty diner favorites like country fried steak and gravy, and zesty New Mexican classics like Chile Rellenos and Huevos Rancheros. Most of all, though, it's the genial, welcoming staff: no matter how busy they get, you'll never feel rushed. Stopping in at The Range always feels a little like coming home; the colorful ambience never fails to cheer. This visit, my wife and I started out with Rey's Nachos, a giant, confetti-colored mesa constructed of black beans, tender shredded chicken, crumbled white cheddar cheese and Mexican cojita, with chile con queso, freshly chopped guacamole and pico de gallo, fresh lettuce, chopped tomato, and blue & white corn chips, the whole thing laced with a lightly seasoned smoked chile crema. The best nachos in the universe. For supper she ordered the Country Fried Steak, a Route 66 classic consisting of a succulent breaded fried cutlet smothered in savory cream gravy, served with homemade mashed potatoes (with soft, buttery chunks of potato, which is how you know it's homemade), accompanied by a delicious side dish of yellow squash sautéed with fresh corn and onions. Her only complaint was that there was too much food. I had The Range's signature Plato Combinación del Rancho, which consisted of a blue corn chile relleno, two rolled lean beef blue corn enchiladas, one chicken taco dressed with smoked chile crema; savory pinto beans, twin moats of red and green chile ("Christmas"), the whole thing topped with melted white cheddar, and accompanied by a mouth-watering mound of arroz verde ("green rice"), an aromatic side dish consisting of basmati rice cooked with parsley, cilantro, spinach flakes, olive oil, garlic and scallions. Fantastic place. They were packed for Sunday breakfast, so I found a spot a the bar in the rear. The bar-tender, I thin her name was Dani, was awesome. A couple came in when the lady next to me was leaving, so I moved over to make room. They were my new pals. Then a guy came in as I was eating and sat down next to me. Also a new pal, as we chatted about the food then work, life, etc. So ... the atmosphere is awesome. The staff is super friendly. The place is spotless. What struck me the most, was the patrons are so friendly. They were all regulars and knew each other and welcomed the out-of-towner. I was even invited back next Sunday! But on to the food ... the Bacon Flight ... well, it is bacon done several ways ... all excellent. Nothing else to say here. This Chicken Egg-chilada was out of this world tasty! Dunno if they picked this location to be a good stop between Santa Fe and Albuquerque but it was. Just a couple of blocks off the freeway and lots of parking. The restaurant and bar areas are good size and the building also has a retail store where you can buy their in house goods. We had enough time to eat so they let us sit at the soda fountain counter to gobble up our late lunch. Had the single chile relleno with rice and beans. My friend had the calabasita tacos with added beans and rice. They had forgotten to pack us the rice and beans so good thing we ate there. They comped the iced tea for that mix up. Their chile and salsa were the mildest I had all trip. The cornmeal coating on the relleno was light, not greasy, and had a good crunch. The Range Cafe has become a must-visit stop whenever we visit our friends in Albuquerque. The decor is colorful, the atmosphere is friendly, and the inside is deceptively large. While you're waiting for a table there is a nice gift shop that's ready take a few of your dollars for some branded merchandise, some local herbs/spices, local-made salsas, books, and even a selection of craft beers. The dining room is an area of constant activity, with the staff busy taking care of customer's needs. The service is efficient without being overbearing. I've ordered the breakfast burrito and 1) have never been disappointed and 2) gone away hungry. Seriously. The breakfast burrito should be called the Lasts All Day Burrito. For an extra twist, order it with Christmas Style...that's two different sauces, Red and Green. It's makes for a great meal. It's look awesome, too (unfortunately I didn't get a picture of it before I dove into it with gusto.). They have one...no two...no, three...THREE gift shops. From crafts from local artisans to wines to old fashioned candies (Laffy Taffy®!) to tshirts, there is A LOT to chose from. The menu is extensive, and all very reasonably priced. I've visited several of the Range locations in the ABQ valley and this one is probably my favorite. It's a nice place to relax, have a drink, and enjoy a solid meal with New Mexican influences throughout. You definitely will not go hungry here as the portions are very large and my crew didn't manage to finish dinner. Our server was excellent and on top of her game, making sure drink glasses were full and that our food arrived piping hot from the kitchen. Prices are fine. I'd bring visitors here anytime. When we are "back home" in New Mexico we always stop by one of our favorite New Mexico spots. We had breakfast and as always split the red/green chilis (they call it Christmas). The pancakes are big, we opted for just one each. Our waitress was so incredibly sweet. One of our friends was getting a little "antsy" and asked when the food would be ready and even though she has no control of the number of orders or the kitchen she emerged with all of our plates in minutes. Love the art they have on the wall. Always of things New Mexico and they are usually for sale. Don't forget the little gift shop just next door while waiting. From the pastries and pies at the front of the restaurant to the menu items. I didn't have enough appetite! We settled on eggs, bacon, hash brown and toast breakfast which was great. Everything coming by our table looked delicious. The other great thing about this restaurant is the NA art which was on the walls and tables. Beautiful work everywhere. Caught a late breakfast on the way to Taos. This place is like a gift shop combined with a restaurant. Thankfully there was plenty of seating and there was no wait. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros Christmas style (red and green sauce) looking forward to some NM chili love on one of my favorite breakfasts! The sauces were both definitely the highlight. However they couldn't elevate the rest. Pintos by themselves were great, the potatoes were good but nothing special. The red and green sauce were absolutely the best part. What a fabulous place! I'm out in NM for a family trip and we came across this after a long day trip to Chaco Canyon and just needed something to finally eat after having some snacks throughout the day. I got their Deviled Egg Cobb salad subbed with ranch dressing and no blue cheese. The portion was quite big and the ingredients tasted really fresh - I was quite full by the end. My mom and brother both had their shredded chicken tacos which they both devoured and loved and our friend had a hot Turkey plate that she also really liked. I'm hoping we can try to stop by once more before we head back home but definitely a great place to check out! read more
