Western View is a cool original diner! Opened in 1937 and still going strong. It's got Naugahyde booths and a menu you can't believe. All types of options to eat depending upon what you are in the mood for. You can tell this spot is a favorite of locals and native New Mexicans. It was comfortable and everyone was kind. The person that brought us our set ups and drinks was very nice and our waitress was super personable as well as the totter waitress who checked on us and helped us whenever we needed something. We brought my 93 year old mother in law and she thoroughly enjoyed her liver and onions! She ordered a baked potato which was huge and it came with calabacitas and homemade Texas toast. She also had the green chile chicken stew and liked it. My hubby got the super deluxe burger which is a green Chile cheeseburger with bacon. The 10 oz patty was so much bigger than the bun. We giggled. He liked his meal and ate all of it. I ordered the Rueben and liked the sandwich and the fries. Both tasty and enjoyable. We also got a slice of cherry pie and lemon meringue pie though I did not photograph those. Cherry pie was good and lemon meringue was nice. Both homemade. Came in early on a Sunday, just after the restaurant opened for the day. The parking lot was nearly empty, and only the staff inside. I was greeted with a smile, and seated immediately. There were LOTS of choices on the breakfast menu, but the one I chose was the biscuit and gravy platter. I was not disappointed. The consistency and flavor were perfect on every point, and the prices couldn't be beaten. The old west decor, on old Route 66 marked a perfect breakfast experience, and one I hope to repeat on a future visit. read more

We hadn't been to this place in awhile but we're going to eat here more often now because it's really fantastic! They make practically everything here from scratch - they butcher the meat, make the salad dressings, bake the bread and desserts, etc. Everything is really fresh and tasty. Not to mention the prices are really reasonable - 3 steak dinners and drinks plus 2 desserts was just over $100. You'd pay way more at Outback or Longhorn and it wouldn't be as good. The owner is really friendly and will come talk to you about what they have today then go back into the kitchen and make your meal. Really personable hard working guy. There really should be more restaurants like this in the world and less chains full of processed factory foods and moody teenage staff! read more

We decided to give the Western View Steakhouse. another try. We ordered an enchilada plate and a meatloaf plate. The meatloaf plate was fine. The enchilada plate only had two enchiladas. and they were flat. I specifically asked for them to be three-rolled. The menu says that it comes with three rolled or three flat enchiladas. I guess they figured out a way how to save money. At this point, I don't know if it's worth going back if they are going to try cutting corners and still charge the same. My enchilada plate was supposed to come with a sopapilla but came with a store-bought tortilla instead. Very disappointing. We give it time before returning thinking maybe they were just having a rough day, but it seems they've been having a rough few years. read more

Dining in on a Saturday, it was slow, with only a few other diners. We parked in the front, pulling in from Central. It's like stepping back in time, giving diner vibes from decades ago. Let's start with a note to all you ABQ Heights folks who are scared to venture 'to Central on the west side' or might drive by this place and think it's a dive: **It is a dive. It is on the west side.** If you are too scared to stop and eat here, you're missing out. The staff is great, and the clientele is chillin. The food is outstanding. Relax, Heights folks. My wife and I had a delicious dinner here. You start with house-made chips and salsa. I've got a tender tongue and don't like anything above a 1-alarm fire. These chips were great; don't even need the salsa - but it was just fine. My wife's steak was tender and delicious. My boneless pork chops were great. They were accompanied by an enormous baked potato. The garlic toast was HUGE, soft, delicious. Not overdone and break-a-tooth crunchy like some places make it. All in all, we had more food than we could eat. --Take home box time! On the way out- PIES in the display case. They looked soooo good. But we were too full. Staff was really nice. Place is family owned and feels it. The food was okay. Maybe it's the menu and only some things are great and I got something as a non local that wasn't great. The tuna melt was too wet so got soggy and cheese not melted. Fries were inedible. Soup was good. Friend loved her French toast. read more

"Honey" or "sweetheart" are terms rarely heard in modern restaurants today. But this is not a modern restaurant it is an anachronism. We pulled up and the exterior was dark, are they open - yes. We walked into a place that could have been set in the 50's. It looked old - but had character. Reminded me of a restaurant I'd frequent in South Texas at least every Friday. We found a booth and wet met by our waitress. Got drinks and menus started looking and found the chicken fried steak, it's hand breaded so that was easy. Add fries, carrots and Texas toast. Memories of Saturday nights. The wife ordered a Mexican Combo plate - taco, tamale, enchilada with rice & beans. Chicken fried steak was delicious, & tender, gravy needed a little pepper. The Combo had great taste and was well seasoned. Generous amounts of green chile and cheese - but not drenched in it.There was plenty of food and it was inexpensive! They were willing to make substitutions for me, however they do not have Turkey bacon or Turkey sausage, so if you can't have pork, be sure to make sure their menu has something you want. Bottom Line: Classic diner fare in classic diner setting. Diverse menu, something for everyone. Generous portions. Moderate prices. Friendly & fun staff. Top Line: Western View Steakhouse was the landing zone for a lunchero amigo and I to score some Route 66 nostalgic food beside the Mother Road in western Albuquerque. This was like stepping back 60 or so years to the heyday of the Golden Age of Rte 66. The decor is dated and worn, though not particularly tired looking. The laminate table tops are dull from bazillions of families stoking the kiddies up with burgers, fried anything, & soda before piling back in the station wagon for more road time. There are enough windows facing south onto Central Ave to brighten up the interior. Special shout out to our waitress Mary for her engaging, funny, and endearing personality, as well as her taking conscientiously good care of us for the duration of our meal. She was solid in hitting us up for refills about the time the tea glasses hit the halfway mark. Her serving us went a good long way in keeping the meal festive. Given the bantering interplay between the waitresses and some of the customers, there are obviously frequent diners who chow down at Western View Steakhouse on the regular. Mi amigo went with their chicken fried steak accompanied by a heap of mashed potatoes blanketed with gravy and steamed veggies on the side. I went the veal parmigiana direction with spaghetti, marinara sauce, and a salad sided by a couple cuplets of Greek salad dressing. We both chose iced raspberry sweet tea to alleviate the heat of the day. Portions on all dishes were generous, especially given the rather moderate prices. The decor ain't pretentiously snooty fancy and neither are the prices. But the plate full of food was substantial classic diner fare. There was also a basket of sturdy tortilla chips & salsa that had very fresh pico de gallo taste and a couple slices of crunchy crusted homemade bread to fill out the lunch roster for the day. I had intended to have a slice of their pecan pie for dessert, but was too full for it after the indulgence of their large portions. I would have had to bring it home in my pocket because my stomach was in "No Vacancy" status. On our way out I also noted a pan of pecan or walnut caramel rolls under glass as part of Western View's "breakfast all day" options that looked like just what the Sugar Doctor prescribes for a caffeine and carbs early morning energy & calories overload. The food never disappoint. I had the surf & turf last night for Valentine'a Day dinner. My husband always gets the chicken fried steak because it is the BEST we've ever had. The nostalgic ambience reminds me of diners I visited with my parents when I was a child. it's incredibly endearing. We came for lunch and found that they serve breakfast all day. I ordered the mushroom and swiss omelet with hash browns and dry toast. The omelet tasted good, but I wish that they used real swiss cheese instead of the processed cheese. It would have made the flavor so much better. The decor was dated but things were clean. The waitress was friendly and greeted us right away. We chose our own table when we walked in and she brought us the menus. This has become my home away from home. The food is amazing. The staff make you feel at home. The owner, is always creating something new and delicious. Now, not only are they hand-cutting their own steaks, they are making their own chicken fried steaks as well. Make sure you try their salsa, their shrimp, and now...the sombrero! This is a dessert for the table. This is the Western View's answer to the fried ice cream. Flaky goodness, cinnamon, chocolate, and ice cream all together. I wish we took a picture before everyone dived in. Will the next time we go in. While we were there, we got to experience a new creation, the chocolate taco. The cocoa in the cake part was decadent. Our family truly enjoyed meals at Western View until this past Saturday February 5, 2022. Our nephew is disabled and was eager to get a part time job with no more than 15 hours a week, on Friday February 4, 2022 we went to have breakfast at Western View, the place was not full but busy, so the service was a bit slower than normal, finally the waitress tended to the 3 of us and said I am so sorry for not tending to your table sooner but we are short staffed and I am having to wait on tables plus help with the dishes I even called my son to come wash dishes and help out, I said my goodness they need to hire help she stated we are hiring, our nephew said that he would be interested the waitress said really he said yes so later on in the afternoon my husband drove him back to the restaurant to speak to Jimmy who owns the restaurant he hired him on the spot and asked him to come back at 8:00 AM the next day February 5, 2022 so we got him to the restaurant at 7:45 AM for no more than a 4 hour shift well the 4 hours turned into 9 hours, (remember that our nephew is disabled) when we returned at 1:45 PM our nephew looked visibly upset and shaken but stated that he was not finished yet, my husband did speak to Jimmy and Jimmy immediately mention to my husband that he realized that our nephew has a disability my husband said yes he does, at that point Jimmy said that he wanted to train him a bit longer and if he could pick him up in 1 hour we'll the 1 hour turned into 2 1/2 more hours, finally after contacting my husband who had not gotten home from picking up our nephew, he immediately told me what was going on so I hung up with him and called my nephew and ask what is going on? He stated to me that he had not been told when to leave, I told him you need to let him no that you have already been there 9 hours, my nephew was scared to say anything, so when he got home he began to tell me what had happened throughout the day. Well here is the list of what happened 1, he had not yet been released from work 2, he had not had a lunch break 3, he was being verbally abused 4, he was told that he had to get back to work at 8:00 AM the next day 5, he was not being a dishwasher as expected 6, the owner had him with his bare hand removing a clogged toilet where my nephew cut himself and the owner would cussing and yelling at him 7, continued abusing my nephew verbally 8, Jimmy told the waitress give him some soup so he can leave 9, he left with no pay or told when to return for his pay Our nephew felt that it was normal to be treated this way all because he wanted to work, he was so broken from how he was treated he simply could not understand why. read more
