Our family sought out Rathskeller for a rehearsal dinner of around 45 people. Compared to other restaurants in the area their dinner options were very reasonable. Our group went with a buffet option of two entrées; chicken marsala and rouladen. Both were excellent, plentiful, and the side dishes complimented well. The staff was very accomodating and friendly. First time getting German food, and I was happy that my friend and I picked a good one. The restaurant offers both formal and casual dining, as well as biergarten on Friday if you are mostly up for the fresh beer. Friends ordered schnitzels. Taste great. I had a wiener platter (appetizer entree) with sauerkraut. This one has one more kind of sausage than the plate on the entree menu as a tradeoff for side dishes. We chose seats in the bar, as we had a large party and a show to attend. The service. was. rough. We had to really joke around with our waiter to get him to show any interest in serving us, and several of our meals were incorrect or just plain forgotten. Even the other servers who came to our table did so with a scowl. It was a real bummer on our girls' night out. The food was just OK. Nothing on the menu jumped out as a must-have, but we ordered a few pretzels for starters---which arrived overdone and pretty tough. My cousin and I went here to see some live music. We had not known the band previously, but they were really fun. They interacted with the crowd a lot. The venue has a unique style, especially the stage. There were two outdoor bar areas which kept lines short. A brewery was visiting the night we came and were passing out some samples. There was $5 cover the night we went (maybe every night for bands? not sure?). It began to rain, but the band continued to play. We stayed in the rain for a little bit, but were really happy that the venue also had a large indoor seating area where we could finish our beers and conversation before leaving. I enjoyed that people of all ages (..well 21+) were able to gather here and have a good time. I would definitely take a group of friends or family here if I were showing them around Indy. I've been here several times and each time has been a pleasant experience overall. The beer is always good and a few times we have simply stopped in for some beer, pretzels, and spicy mustard. My favorite beer is always the Rathskeller Amber. This past weekend we came here for my birthday celebration and had a nice time. We had 21 people and ended up in our own private room upstairs. Our wait staff was wonderful and prompt considering the size of the party. We tried several appetizers and I enjoyed the baked Brie the most. I had the sauerbraten with the spaeztle, salad, and potato cake. It was all delicious! This is a great place for events in downtown Indianapolis as they have several floors with different size rooms. Love the Rathskeller, both restaurant and Biergarten! It is easily my favorite hangout in indy during the summer and early fall. The food here is delicious. I haven't had a single thing I don't like (except for the mustard with the pretzels, SPICY, you've been warned ) I typically order the jaegerschnitzel with spaetzle (go with me here, it's not often that I have to spell German words). It's a little pricey but you get what you pay for! Also I've noticed that they have an excellent Devour Indy special so keep an eye out for that. read more

We went here for a date night. It was almost ruined by the poor service and food here. The steak was tough and next to impossible to cut. We were there for 2 hours and every table around us filled and emptied before we could get any of our courses. A plurality of Americans are of German descent. So why aren't there more German restaurants in America? A visit to The Rathskeller (or any German restaurant) answers the question: Because even the Germans, after living in America and exposed to a cornucopia of other foods - Italian, Chinese, Thai, Mexican, etc. - conclude that they don't want to eat German food any more. I had the Bavarian Platte, which had two types of sausages steamed in beer, sauerkraut, and German potato salad. There was nothing wrong with the Kielbasse and Bockwurst but I failed to detect the value add over, say, a $1.50 bratwurst from CostCo's food court (which comes with a free drink!). Seriously... You can't possibly compare a plate with two types of plebeian sausages, some fermented cabbage, and potato salad with the amazing concoctions available in other ethnic restaurants. It might be kind of interesting compared to some fast food or a mall food court, but that's not even a given. Yes, I know they have other items, and I have had them in other German restaurants, but every one I have ever had has been quite plain compared to other ethnic foods. We also had a party of eight and they brought out two pretzels for all of us to share. Two. It's as if the pretzel were made of precious wheat flour grown by unicorns and harvested by angels. The Rat is always a place for fun. In the biergarten you'll find plenty of food options and plenty of booze for purchase. There is enough room to move around and bathrooms being the stage...It's a unisex 1 or 2 stalls so plan to wait in line if you use that one. It's tough to walk past the busy bar if you want to use the restroom inside but it's manageable. The bathrooms are super old school and it's a blast to read years of scribbling on the walls. The bartenders and friendly and generous. Bring cash to get outside to the biergarten, there has always been a $5 cover when Ive gone. Bottom line, great place to hang, get both unique food or a good old pretzel, have an ice cold beer and enjoy a night of music. Worth it read more

This was my first time here and it was a great experience! I met my fiancé after work one Friday evening for an event for his work in the beer garden outside. Parking is a pain since it's downtown and I wasn't aware there was a separate entrance for the garden itself so I had to go through the restaurant part to get to the beer garden. Their restaurant seemed pretty steady with people eating and the German-influenced food smelled so good! We will definitely have to come back for dinner! The indoor atmosphere was very cool in the hall and elegant in the restaurant. There is a banquet room off to the side also for events and weddings that they host too! The outdoor beer garden was hosting a local band that was pretty good. They have a bar outside and also snack foods. The pretzel with spicy mustard sauce was a huge hit along with loaded cheesy potatoes! We will definitely be back as this is a great place to hang out with a group and to just have a relaxing evening! read more

Food was great - started with pretzels and spicy mustard, then we had schnitzel, the Bavarian plate (2 large sausages) and schnitzel with red sauce / cheese (similar to veal parmesan), plus sides of spaetzle, sauerkraut and German potato salad. Good portion sizes, but left enough room to split a slice of German chocolate cheesecake for dessert. With drinks (1 pint of Hefeweizen and 2 iced teas), the bill was under $80, with tip closer to $100. We'll be back to try the Rouladen and some of the other German dishes on the menu. read more

When we chose Rathskellar as our pre-game dinner, I'm not sure what I expected. A german beer hall? Sure. A restaurant? Sure. An enormous building the size of a castle with a YMCA in it and food portions that would make even an NFL player ask for a doggie bag? No. But I'm damn glad that we took this detour into Indy's finest german establishment. Our first business was to order gigantic beers and a plate of "hot wurst." Oh did I say plate? I mean platter. A platter of meat and cabbage. It was a gut bomb of epic proportions but well worth the stage 5 meat sweats that were to ensue. All different types of "wurst" were repped and I managed to stuff myself like... well, a sausage. The hot mustard was horseradishy goodness and will do to your sinuses what medicine actually purports to do -- that is, clears them out, violently. Experiment with it carefully my friends -- that burn goes all the way to your brain. Thank god I had the foresight to split a jagerschnitzel with my friend because a whole meal would have probably actually killed me. The jagerschnitzel was the size of a human torso, fried smothered covered with dark brown gravy and mushrooms. Its savory goodness paired with the awesome funkiness of sauerkraut was perfection. I was sad to leave even a morsel on the plate but at this point I was in extreme danger that a pant button would pop and take out an unsuspecting patron. Our server was fantastic, chatty, prompt and sweet, the bill was totally reasonable and the food set us up nicely for an evening of extreme booze consumption. I'd like some more time here to explore the extensive beer selection and the polka band in the biergarten. Nothing like old dudes in leiderhosen to get the blood pumping. That's a whole nother kind of sausage fest though. If you're in Indy, the Rathskellar is a must try. I wish I could say better things about the Rat, but I feel like I always get indifferent service here--like I'm crashing a frat party and they're begrudgingly letting me join the keg line. I wish it wasn't so because I love the kitschy charm of the interior and the ample outdoor seating is nice for big groups (though, if there's a band playing, forget about talking). I also think drinks at the Rat are waaaay overpriced. Most "small" beers are $4 (maybe 8-10 oz?). What looks like a normal pint is $7. As far as I can tell, they don't serve anything super hard to find here unless you are wowed by the likes of Spaten and Hacker-Schorr. I should confess, I'm not wild over German beer, or at least the varieties I've had. I guess I'd be happier paying the premium for beers I'm so-so on if I felt more welcomed by the servers here. I've not delved far into the menu at the Rathskellar, but the spicy mustard is pretty awesome, especially if you need your sinuses cleared. read more

THIS REVIEW IS OF THE RESTAURANT - NOT THE BAR/BEER GARDEN (which are friggen awesome) I have been a long time lover of the rathskellar for drinks and live music. The beer garden is just about the best place to toss back a cold one in downtown Indianapolis. After trying the restaurant, I can safely say I will NEVER eat there again. First, there was a wedding reception going on in the room adjacent to our table, so we had to spend the majority of the evening listening to YMCA and Baby Got Back. The drunk wedding party continually stumbled up and down the main aisle all night (hey, not hating on them...it's a wedding after all) which really took away from the dining experience. This place is not cheap. Entres pretty much start at $20 and go up from there. I had two beers and my date had one mixed drink. With no apps OR dessert, the bill came to $74. On top of this, it was just... "meh". The quality was substantially less than I was hoping for after what I had payed. The service was fine, and really the only saving grace. Now here's the kicker. After spending about $95 (after tip) in the restaurant, they still wanted us to pay the $5 cover to go out into the beer garden. I was pretty ticked. That's just nickle and diming your regulars. So we left. While I will continue to be a loyal patron of the beer garden in warmer months, I will never eat there again. read more

Dan McMichael "It is my prerogative to serve whoever I please". I suspect as soon as Dan discovered that my party was for my 90 yr old grandmother and that there would be several kids coming I "wore out my welcome", as Dan so kindly said. Basically we were refused service. I forgot that Indiana allows business to refuse service to people they don't want in their establishment (I'm not sure about this but last I remember this was the case). Very sad considering that my grandmother and I grew up having gone to the Rathskeller as a family. We had wonderful memories until now. I even remember taking my kids to the beer garden up to 8pm and listening to music and dancing. Now kids are no longer allowed in the beer garden at all. Dan McMichael might be the number one antihero in the history of time. Actually, I may have found a new character for my next book. He single handedly ruined my grandmothers 90th birthday party. He will argue that 1) we made several changes to the party which we did because we keep getting more people who wanted to come. And 2) that I yelled at his employee (I did not yell however I was frustrated because Dan changed our written agreement a few days before the event. So yes I spoke in a stern voice but never did I yell.) Here is my side of the story: The short version is that I organized plans to have a birthday party for my 90 year old grandmother at the Rathskeller. Because of her popularity the party grew from 25 to 60 very quickly. Robyn at the Rathskeller went out of her way to help us out and came up with a win/win scenario so I thought. Everything was put into writing and I thought life was good. A few days before the event I suspect that Dan caught wind of the arrangement that Robyn made with us. When I sent an email about a question on AV equipment I was renting from them. I got an email from Robyn saying sorry I have been told by my boss that we need to charge you $250 to put the appetizers on large trays vrs the single plates. I called Robyn and explained that putting the appetizers on a few big plates vrs a bunch of little plates was outlined in the contract I was sent. It specifically said the appetizers would be put on large serving plates and there was no charge for this. She also told me that we really need to be spending more money on food and that her boss was not happy. Frustrated I spoke in a stern voice (not yelling in anyway although Dan will use this as his reason for denying us service). I explained that I had several people flying in from out of town and I myself was flying in from out of town. I asked to speak to a manager to see if we could work something out. That's when I got a call from Dan who literally raised his voice with me and would not even allow me to talk or even give my side of the story. He just said "you are no longer welcome here" and hung up the phone. I sent Dan and email explaining how this was all in writing and now a few days before our event he changed the agreement and didn't even notify me about it. I explained that we had several families coming from out of town and even from Germany. He's response was, "Not anywhere is there signed contract". It is clear to me that Dan changed the agreement because he did not want us at his restaurant. Maybe because he didn't want kids there, maybe because he didn't want to accommodate a party for a 90 yr old lady, or maybe he didn't think he would make enough money off of us. Whatever the reason it's very disheartening to know that you can be denied service over something like this. I no longer have the fond memory of the Rathskeller like I did as a kid and I hope that one day soon someone takes it over who will restore the pro family culture that was once the heart of what made the Rathskeller such a wonderful place. read more

I am a big fan of German food and I wanted this place to be better. Cool atmosphere and decor. Server was very personable and attentive. We had the sausage appetizer and it was delicious. Bacon dressing on salad was also very good. It went down hill from there. Rouladen was tender but very bland. I tried my wife's Jägerschnitzel and it also kisses the mark. Gravy didn't have any flavor and the schnitzel was so so. Spaetzle was just okay. Sauerkraut and ref cabbage were good. I would give 3.5 stars if I could. We made a reservation for NYE, was ignored at the host stand because the host was busy talking to a coworker, and then we were seated with a server who seemed to not have time for us at all but all the time in the world for the table next to us. I'm not sure what her name is because she didn't bother to say. I presume it's because we had a group of 25-29 year olds and the table next to us was much older. She forgot to put in the appetizers and told us she forgot (when we were receiving our meals) and that she'd get them in right away. Come to the end of the meal, still no appetizers! We were there for 2 hours and only maybe 20 minutes of it were spent eating. Overall unpleasant experience. I've never had worse service. So much time wasted just waiting for her to have time for us. read more

The Rathskeller is home to many locals for a number of reasons. In the summers the amphitheater is alive with live music and people dancing after a number of the infamous Optimators. Delicious beer continues to flow throughout the day where you can enjoy wonderful German food out in the beer garden. The large variety of drink sizes is sure to please the heaviest drinker and light weight of the group. After attempting some yucky ice cream, my friends and I decided to just booze it up instead. Obviously we needed to hit the awesome biergarten. This seems like a great place to potentially pick up dudes but that might have been the heavy Bostonian accents two of the girls in our group have that had men intrigued. In any case, folks couldn't have been more friendly and eager to chat and laugh with you on the Friday evening we stopped by for a couple of drinks. I just loved it in the beirgarten! How could you not? You can sit at picnic tables with your gal pals while carb loading on Smithwick's and soft pretzels. With the aforementioned friendly folks who like dancing to Polka Boy. The staff is friendly and fun as well. I like that when you go up to order drinks they don't act annoyed and rolls their eyes when you ask, "Whatcha got back there? I don't have my glasses on!" I'm not very experienced with German food so I was a little hesitant when I was in Indy for the first time and someone suggested it. I had spent the better part of the day in airports and on planes so I was ready to get somewhere that had alcohol. I totally fell in love with this place. The food we had was really decadent and delicious. We went on a restaurant week special so it was $30 for 3 courses of ridiculously too much food. I loved the pretzel and sinus clearing mustard, perfect ceasar salad, my schnitzel and potato pancake was good and the apple streudel, well I only had 2 decadent bites of that because I was so full. Tons of beers on tap, yum. What really got me was the ambiance, I LOVED it. Every inch of this place was interesting and had a story. We didn't go on a night that had a band, would have loved to see that. The staff was amazing, they were shutting down for the night but they let us explore and see parts of the place that we hadn't ventured into and our wait staff treated us like we were regulars. I was excited and impressed with the pretzel you get while waiting for your food. The entrees are a little pricey but it's definitely worth it. The location for the rathskeller is fantastic. The Athenaeum is a great building with a lot of history. Unfortunately, the restaurant itself leaves much to be desired. First, although the selection of German beers is decent, it is overpriced and on multiple occasions their Weihenstephaner was expired yet served anyway. The staff also always seem to assume that I will be drinking outside rather than at the bar, which means that they pour a $10 beer into a solo cup. For that price, I will sit at the bar and drink out of a proper Weißbier glass. When the beer is good, the bar is an ok experience. The food itself is nothing to write home about. For those who think that this place represents German food, think again. The only menu item worth getting is the Bavarian wurst plate with red cabbage. Everything else is overpriced and highly suspect. For example, the Jägerschnitzel I had was breaded with what seemed to be American style brown gravy and mayonnaise drizzled on top. The only similarity to the real thing is the name and that it was served on a plate. Avoid the food. It is not German food and I cannot believe that people fall for it. Take a German or two along with you to the Rathskeller and they will make this review look glowing. Finally, the service is hit or miss. Some servers are very polite and professional. Others seem to think that they are doing the customer a favor by letting them eat in this fine establishment. There is no need for arrogance and an entitled attitude towards paying customers. On several occasions I or friends of mine have walked in and been ignored by staff who just stood around and gossiped. I give this place two stars because the location is fantastic and because it is the only place in town where I can get a Weißbier in a real .5 liter glass (that is when the bartender actually gives it to me in one). Lastly, this review of the Rathskeller has no bearing on events hosted by the Athenaeum Foundation, which has put on some excellent events for a good cause. Disappointing. At a convention in town I decided to try this place, I like german food, I heard it was the best german food in town. Must be low standards. I didn't know what to expect, so this isn't really a restaurant as a huge multivenue building. It was obviously very busy, we had reservations, but without them it was over a 2 hour wait, so maybe with that demand the restaurant doesn't feel the need to try harder. The dining rooms were a warren of connected passageways and stairways, the chairs were really cheap banquet style chairs, did not give a good vibe. The meal came with bread, rolls and pretzles, the bread was good. It came with two dipping sauces. Ridiculously hot mustard, and cheese from a jar. I've had better pretzle cheese dip at Applebees, and I hate Applebees. I ordered schniztle, it was okay, just okay. The sauce wasn't anything. I also got spaetzle, this was actively bad spaetzle. I don't think I've ever had such bad spaetzle to be honest. It was also lukewarm only, like it had been sitting, the sauce was congealing, like I said, actively bad. My wife had schnitzle parmesean, which was kinda blah, for a dish you can get at almost any restaurant anywhere (schitzle parmesean, chicken/pork/veal milanese, chicken parmesean, we're all talking the same thing more or less here). The whole plate was lukewarm, if it is such a stretch from the kitchen how about plate covers to keep some heat in? My son had chicken cordon bleu rolls, these were actually pretty good. I tried his of course. I'm not sure they weren't a frozen food item though. Dessert was the high point, the german chocolate cheesecake, very good. Would I ever go there again? For drinks and desert maybe, not for food. For the price I thought it was also a very poor value I'd give it hospital cafeteria quality. read more

I did have the landjager and was full by the end. however, I wasn't impressed and enjoyed the beer more than anything else. If I do go back, I will eat first and come for the drinking. I've had a beer and a pretzel before (be wary of the mustard! spicy, doesn't even begin to cover it!) but I'm glad I got to try some German food this time! I went with a large group and they accommodated us easily, the service was fantastic and the beer recommendations were spot on!! I got the vegetarian pasta (yes veg-heads there are a few options for us on the menu!) and it was super filling and amazing. I had to take it home because I couldn't finish it. I HIGHLY recommend this place, I will definitely be coming back. Oh and one other thing, they have a Vonnegut room in the back!!! How cool! The devour menu consisted of an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert for each person for $35. For our appetizers we got the signature stuffed mushrooms and the Red Lead Lettuce & Hearts Of Palm Salad. The mushrooms were delicious, though there was only four small mushrooms. The salad was disappointing. It was incredibly plain, very small (it looked more like a side salad than an appetizer) and had 1/8 of a tomato in it. For our entrees, we had the NY stuffed strip steak and a jaegar schnitzel. The NY strip was good, though more rare than medium rare. The schnitzel was nothing to brag about - it had a little too much breading and the mushroom sauce was bland and rather watery. Both entrees came with two choices of sides. For our dessert, we had the black Forrest cake and the Sacher torte - both fairly good desserts. As two native Europeans, we were really excited to eat here as we grew up eating this sort of food. Generally, it was an ok experience but we don't see ourselves coming back and paying full price for these dishes. read more
