On July 12, my wife and I decided to have dinner at the Raymond. We hadn't been in a long time and were excited to go to this beautiful place once again. We sat outside and waited about 10 min for our server Kelly C to come over and greet us. She finally comes and explains the rules of the menu (Which seemed strange to us there were so many rules, but okay.) Right away asked if we were ready to order dinner. We hadn't even looked at the menu yet or ordered drinks. We said we would like to start with drinks and the cheese board. We asked what the cheese was and Kelly C said "I Have no idea, I just got back from vacation and I have vacation brain let me check." My wife then ordered a sparkling wine and we also ordered a bottle of Shug Chardonnay - $64 dollar bottle of wine. About 5 min later the sparkling wine shows up but no bottle of Chard. Kelly asks if we want to order dinner and we said, we were wondering what the cheese was? She said "Oh Right, let me find out" and came back in 5 min told us the cheeses (not the cheeses we got by the way) and then also asks "What's the name of that wine again?" To which I told her SHUG. So we ordered the cheese plate and then 5 min she comes back again and said "Just to let you know the cheese plate comes with no bread so if you want that it's another 8 dollars" I mean at this point sure bring us the eight dollar bread. The Cheese plate comes shortly after with two of the same cheeses and one of the other ones she mentioned and two seriously questionably meats. Kelly C. comes back 20 min later with the Shug Chardonnay and an ice bucket and said she was "Chilling it" which is why it took so long. I mean, maybe telling us it wasn't cold and suggesting another wine would have been a better move, but okay. So we're 40+ min in and barely got the wine and the cheese and the sparkling wine were just sitting there in the sun. At that point we said ok great, we'll just order since she asked us several times. We then ordered (Not from the Dine LA menu offered that night) and 7 min later our food came. SEVEN MINUTES LATER. So we have a full cheese plate, a full bottle of wine and now our dinner. I said to her "We just got our cheese plate and are not ready for dinner quite yet" Kelly C then said "I can take it back if you want" in a grumpy way. We just said fine, we'll eat as we felt incredibly rushed. So we ate and the food was good, but after that Kelly C NEVER checked on us and we were pouring our own wine all night, well at least for the 15 min we had to eat dinner. Kelly FINALLY comes back to check on us and we said we're ready for the check. The cheese plate was full, the wine bottle was still mostly full and we're about 50 min into being there. She never asked if we wanted a box for the cheese and bread, she never asked if we wanted dessert and she was nowhere to be found for most of the meal. If I am paying $200+ dollars for a meal it should feel like an experience, not this rushed and unprofessional. Kelly C - is not the kind of waitress that should be serving at high-end restaurant and telling us she had vacation brain was beyond unprofessional. Bringing the dinner minutes after ordering it and never checking on us is something that should never happen at a place this high regarded and expensive. She at the very least, should have asked if we wanted to course our meal out. Truly one of the worst server experiences we have ever had. read more

Came for valentines and the ambience was really nice and really set the perfect atmosphere for date night dining. They have valet parking, but also plenty of street parking available. Seems like when it's not busy they'll seat you outdoors, which was perfect. We ordered the fried oyster for appetizer, very crispy and the sauce they put on it was very tasty too, it's not your typical Tabasco with radish, it was kind of sweet and savory. For entrees we got the short ribs and sea bass, and both were very good with no complaints. Was kind of shocked to see that they didn't have a steak option on the menu for the night. We also ordered a side of tater tots to satisfy our cravings for fried foods and they gave a handsome portion. They have a full list of drinks from mixed drinks to wine and beer, and the waiter also informed us that they have an open bar so they could customize your drink with your preferred spirit. Great cozy date night/brunch spot. Me and my significant other have been here previously 3 times for their weekend brunch. This was our first dinner experience. We always opt to sit outside, they have two outside areas and my favorite is the right side outside patio (the one that's not encased). I love the brick fireplace and the garden vibes it gives off. We got bread and butter for our starter. They have rotating new butters weekly and this week happened to be a blue cheese strawberry butter and a black truffle garlic butter. It's served with a sourdough loaf. Both butters were delicious. I'm a big fan of blue cheese and strawberries - tasted like a dessert butter. The black truffle butter was also very good. I ordered the Sea bass plate and the s/o ordered the Braised short ribs. Sea bass came with a garlic black rice with wilted kale mixed in with 3 little mussel pieces on the side. Also had a micro greens/bean sprout salad with trout roe eggs. This was soooo satisfying, everything paired well and I literally ate the whole plate. The saltiness of the trout roe went so good with the rice. Only thing I would mention is that my sea bass skin was only semi crispy and I would have liked it a little more crispy than what was served. The S/O's braised short rib plate was also pretty great. It came with a potato parsnip purée and baby white turnips, green beans, fried shallots and a demi-glacé. They loved everything besides the turnips (but I ate these because they were delicious lol!) the braised short ribs were very tender and the whole plate was full of flavor. Of course we love our coffee and dessert to share so I got a cup of decaf and the s/o got a regular cup of coffee. I'm almost positive they use jones coffee. Definitely enjoyed it. We got the Raymond classic which is a brown butter cake with salted caramel drizzle with Chantilly cream. My husband and I stopped by this restaurant to get a drink mid afternoon, and it's really not set up for it. They were perplexed about where to sit us, and we ended up asking to be moved to one of the courtyard's with more ambience. Our drinks both had bourbon style ice cubes instead of crushed ice and the wine list was not set up for an evening cocktail. I wanted to sit in the courtyard with a small snack and enjoy the ambience, but they haven't quite evolved to that. Nevertheless, I do believe a dinner here would be lovely, but we didn't order food this time. Will try it again sometime soon. read more

I have nothing but great things to say about the staff! We were there for a birthday dinner and kept changing our number of guests. The staff and manager were more than accommodating. The food was absolutely delicious. The corn soup was so good that I asked for a second bowl. The charcuterie platter and fried calamari were also great. A good friend and I decided to have brunch at the Raymond Restaurant yesterday morning. I, personally, have wanted to try this place for quite a while. I went to high school around the corner and always passed it on my way home. My initial impressions were that the place was quaint and perfect for a nice meal with friends/family. We were promptly seated and given menus. Christian, our waiter, started off well by taking drink orders within three minutes of our seating. He QUICKLY went downhill after that. We waited longer than we would have liked to order our entrees. Our food came after a reasonable amount of time and looked appetizing. Christian disappeared and we had to ask the manager for condiments. My friend also waited over 10 minutes for her iced tea to be refilled. Our plates were taken by a busboy who never verified if we were through or said "excuse me" when he reached over us to pick up our plates. In fact, the busboy never said anything both times he visited our table. We had to ask the host to find Christian so that I could box up my food and get the check. While the food was decent, the service left a lot to be desired. The table next to us did not seem to have the issues that we had. Christian noted that he also worked at Parkway Grill, which made his poor service even more irritating. Parkway Grill is a high end restaurant that I'm sure does not tolerate subpar servers. Given this, there is no excuse for his ineptitude yesterday. All in all, I'm glad we finally got to try "The Raymond," but I'm in no rush to return and neither is my friend. read more

Claudia was attentive to our planning from the east coast & happy to engage us on our arrival the day before the event to view the space. Food was wonderful & well presented. We went to the Raymond for my birthday celebration last week, and this was not my first time at the Raymond. There unique and creative menu is outstanding. From the appetizers to the main dishes, we were not disappointed. Also, the signature cocktails and the creativity that was incorporated into the cocktails was absolutely amazing, the Raymond is one of those hideaways that if you're driving north on Fairoaks towards Pasadena and your blink, you're going to miss it. The Raymond is well establish as well as managed, well maintained, and the service is outstanding. On a scale of one to 10, I give the Raymond a 10 and I highly recommend it for a casual lunch or dinner, a romantic dinner date, or a party for any occasion. read more

I was very excited to go to the Raymond for a special occasion date night. You arrive and it's forced valet, fine, it's a fancy restaurant. But then you get in and there is no coat closet. You can charge me for valet but you want me to keep my coat on the seat next to me? The napkins are paper, there is no trash can in the ladies room (but there is a sign that asks us not to throw sanitary pads because it can hurt their pipes), and for some reason the waiters are dressed like they're at home bingeing Netflix shows, further establishing that this is not an elegant restaurant. My salad was good, our mains very mediocre (i didn't even finish my ocean trout), but the crème brûlée was stellar and the wine was great. I probably won't go back, it's too expensive for what it is, and it's not elegant enough to be an actual nice restaurant. read more

So many things were an issue at this place. 1. Overpirced menu with less quantity of food for the price. 2. Horrible customer service 3. No parking and ONLY VALET available. 4. Location is hard to find with very less directions on the street. Good points: 1. Food was good. I understand that this place is in Pasadena and they have to keep with a certain standard and serve a certain crowd of people but man a plate of bread and butter was $8 Jesus! On top of that you have a server who gets offended if you ask him to Squeeze a lime inside a Moscow Mule or order water with lemon or even ask him any questions about food. I mean seriously! So we came here specifically cause they have happy hours. Their happy hours is listed on their site as well. These happy hours are from Mon - Fri from 4pm - 6pm. This so called happy hour are on drinks and food according to the site. When we called to make reservations, they said they do have happy hours. Again we are confirming multiple times about this 'Happy Hours'. When we got our table the server comes and hands us the menu. I was like where is the happy hour menu. To which first thing he tells us is that they don't have any happy hours. Then he tells us that happy hours is only from mon to Fri. So I reminded him that it was Friday lol. He accepts that he forgot and brings the menu. The happy hour menu only has drinks and no food. So again, I proceeded to ask him that where is the food on the menu, to which he says that they have stopped happy hours on food. If we want to order food then we have to order from the regular menu. Mind you their WEBSITE still says that happy hours is on food and drinks!. Anyways, at this point we already sat and we were hungry. We did ended up staying just for the experience and ordered all small plates and some drinks from the happy hour menu. Not a place that I would visit again. read more

The atmosphere was great, beautiful. Check in was nice because there was social distancing was occurring, even though the entrance was small. Hostess at the front was friendly and accommodating as the other two members of our group had not arrived yet we were still seated. The outdoor patio was very inviting and well decorated. It was a warm day but the plants and shade made it nice and cool. That was the best part of our experience. We had gone there for happy hour because we were told there was a good happy hour menu for beverages and food. We got there we had to no choice but to valet park, which we weren't expecting. Second when we sat down and asked for the happy hour menu we were initially told there wasn't one because it wasn't happy hour. Got that straightened out when the server realized day and time. He brought over the menu that literally only had a handful of beverages on it. Plus there was no food listed. When asked they said they stopped serving happy hour food. The most disappointing was the actual menu. Some of the items were were very good for what they were. However, the price was completely off for what some of the items were. The bread was barely shareable for $8 for a very tiny loaf. Then they served tater tots with what was supposed to be a special ketchup in a medium $10. There was nothing special about the tater tots or the ketchup. Not worth $10 at least. The only thing we got that may have been worth it was the tempura maitake but even that was $14. Mind you these were just appetizers. The waiter was somewhat helpful to half the table, but ignored the other half. I didn't get my drink order until I asked a second time and it was just a ginger ale, plus I had drank all my water and he didn't once refill it until we were almost done, but he did refill the water of the other two at the table closest to him a couple of times. It was almost like he didn't want to walk that far. This was a very disappointing restaurant. We were all looking forward to going as it was hyped up as the place to go in Pasadena. Would I recommend it: only if you are looking for over priced toddler foods with adult beverages and ambiance. read more

We recently (July 19) hosted a birthday brunch for a group of about 25 in the 1886 Bar area. We were looking for an indoor event space in case it was a warm summer day. Kevin was super easy to work with and responded quickly to my emails to reserve the space and plan the menu. Ginger was our waitress and the service was excellent! We had Caesar salad and avocado toast as our appetizer choices, the eggs benedict, chilaquiles and chicken and waffles for the main course, and creme brulee and ice cream/sorbet for dessert. All the food was amazing and arrived quickly once we were all seated. The bar area has a swanky craftsman style feel, but had some natural light coming in from the patio. We had plenty of room for everyone to mingle and three table seating areas to sit and eat. Many guests commented about what a fun and unique space it was for the event. Would definitely recommend and hope to be back soon! read more

What a wonderful find! Four of us went out to dine in Pasadena. Originally, we were supposed to dine at Houston's, but either way a 3 hour wait and overbooked, we searched for another restaurant. This place caught our eye and was highly recommended by a friend. Now tucked into residential area, this restaurant was once the carriage house off the original and now gone, Raymond Hotel. It is tiny but inviting and warm. We were seated near the fireplace and it felt like home. The cocktail menu is off the hook.....brilliant and original combinations and it is obvious they take pride. AND...they make, shave, and cut their own ice! What a difference to the spirits. Scallops were delicate and well cooked. Burrata and Tomatoes were perfectly seasoned and delicious...highly recommend! Short ribs melted. My only critique is the Mac and Cheese and the Caesar salad. Mac and cheese was not the right combination of cheese and a lot of panko crumbs. Was just off. The Caesar salad was fresh and tasty but I would not recommend a protein. I ordered chicken and it was too much and a bit dry. I would order again without the chicken. I am hoping they expand their menu seasonally. Service was amazing. Amanda was new and lovey and so attentive. An adorable place tucked in South Pasadena. If I didn't have this place mapped out, I probably would've never seen this restaurant just driving by. This place is a hidden gem. Upon entering, you'll feel like you're not going into the right place as it looks like a cottage home, but once you're inside, you'll see that this cottage home is indeed a restaurant! The place is rather small with a cute patio area fit for about 30 people. This could make a great place for a little dinner party with friends or even a small engagement party as well! The food was good. I had the lamb wrap and potato soup. Both were light and perfect for lunch. Their vodka based drink (can't remember the name anymore, but it had a purple/pinkish color) was delish! We love The Raymond and visit frequently. They have always exceeded our expectations. We usually go for dinner or brunch. But we've had the pleasure of attending a few special events they've put on. Chef Shoemakers staycation was a night we will never forget. Truly one of our favorite dining experiences we've ever had. They also had a summer BBQ event for take out during the prime of COVID that was so good! Many times we've wanted to recreate their cocktails at home but didn't have certain ingredients such as allspice dram for the Lion's Tail. Andrew literally went down to basement to find a bottle for us to take home. Talk about service! The cocktails are hard to beat and we've had many. The smoking jacket is probably the most unique cocktail and my bf orders it every single time, never disappoints. The only problem is we can't recreate it. They've curated an orange vanilla ash secret ingredient. I guess that means we will have to keep coming back to the 1886 bar. The food is always outstanding. Octopus is one of my favorite appetizers so perfectly cooked with delicious smokiness. Pork loin Milanese has an amazing porcini mustard sauce. They had a snapper crudo with a crying tiger sauce that if it ever makes it's way back to the menu I would order a hundred times over. Needless to say, the Raymond is a must for patrons that value amazing service, creative yet balanced cocktails, and delicious food. read more

I liked the setting and charming atmosphere of Raymond 1886 to have a friendship dinner for a party of 5. It could have been in someone's home or in an Alpine ski lodge, it just felt warm and welcoming. Service was pristine. What about the food: well it was good, but in my memory, it seemed to have been better and more creative and special. This time, it was more mainstream, less courageous, and not spectacular - and hence a bit disappointing. I'm almost inclined to drop a star - maybe I'll leave it as a warning for now. What did we get: Roasted Cauliflower, Grilled Octopus, Kale Salad as shared appetizers, followed by individual choices of Seared Salmon, Short Rib, New York Steak, Barramundi, and Pan Seared Pork Chop, and ultimately 2 shared and really a bit underwhelming desserts that I do not recall anymore what they were called ... PS: Bring your own wine ... ours was a beautiful fit. Previous REVIEW 03-2018: One of the longtime culinary institutions in the Pasadena/L.A. agglomeration, we had gone to the Raymond 1886 for beautiful and delicious dinners in the past (before yelping). This time, it was for a Sunday brunch, and we were not disappointed either. Seated in a quiet outdoor area, the service was prompt and attentive.
