So, I have two reviews here. Well the first visit I went craving a nice piece of red meat, to my surprise the redfox had one and it was at a decent price. Also the atmosphere and beers were great. I had a steak and fries. They tasted incredible the steak was cooked perfect! Alright visit 2 I go with my buddy and I've been bragging about the steak all day, so when we get there with out hesitation I order a steak blue rare exactly like the last time. Also, my friend ordered the same rare. Well the beers were great again but the steaks came out and mine was over cooked but still juicy and taste great the only problem with both is that they were both extremely small like seriously 1/3 of the size that they were two weeks prior. Well we ate ,paid,tipped etc.. Then went to new seasons and bought two steaks and cooked them at home. Seriously that's how small they were we ate another steak each. read more

Entered starving and left starving. Drinks were fine, seeing as how they weren't previously on fire, unlike our burgers. The patty itself was charred, which might have been slightly more acceptable had not the bun been burned black as well. The fries were like tiny limp dicks, which like everything else, must taste great if smothered in ketchup. We sent our burgers back - and the bartender's response: "We've made thousands of burgers." Uh, well it doesn't matter if we're the 10,000th - you done screwed up. At least own up to it. read more

First time going to this bar with some girls for a bachelorette party! A friend didn't tip at the end of the night since we didn't get food for 45 minutes. The waitress never checked on us and didn't leave the counter for orders. 2 friends closed their cards out and the waitress just walked up and told us how it wasn't nice or appreciated that she didn't get a tip. A girl said she was paying for most of the night for the bachelorette party and the waitress started talking super loud how she doesn't care about her having a bachelorette party and how she was calling her out for not paying any tip. The waitress then continued to say if you don't have money for a tip then you shouldn't be going to bars. The friend then said well what if someone wanted a drink but didn't have money for a tip? Then she kicked us out even though she A. Didn't give us a receipt and B. Didn't know that we weren't going to leave her a cash tip. She complained about us taking "forever to order" which was 4 people and took maybe 5 minutes. Then we walked outside to wait for an Uber and she walked back outside to start talking more shit and to say how dare you leave a review on yelp just because she's a single mom and we are risking her job... I've never been treated so badly by any bar or restaurant in my life. One hamburger was raw when it was ordered well done and another steak that was ordered was over cooked. I was just speechless... don't go here. Just because we were in the same group she put all of this on some "list" so we can't return even though half of us didn't do anything... She never asked how we were or how the food was. read more

Beers haven't changed in the 2 years since I've first gone there, menu link on their website has been broken almost as long, checked their Twitter as a last resort and it hasn't been updated since 2011. With no variety in beer and no indication of what food they serve, why would I ever go in? It's not hard to have a working link on a website. read more

The food was so-so, our waitress came to our table and basically had an attitude from the get-go. She asked us if the service was bad, after it took 30 minutes to get said crappy food. She never checked on us, only took our and that was the extent on our conversation- until she tried shaming us on tipping (I tipped her $2 on an $18 tab). She then kicked us out after arguing with us and on my way out she said "you better go", then came OUT of the bar to yell at us some more. The exchange ended in her flipping off my friend- will never come back again. Mind you, I wasn't rude at all to her. I didn't have one unkind word even though she was standing there berating my party. Competely unprofessional. Completely shitty. read more

I've always loved this neighborhood spot, ever since it was Small World Cafe. But under the new ownership, it leaves something to be desired. The drinks are fine, the wait staff is fine (no worse, no better) but the food... well, it's not fine. Both my friend's burger and my portobello burger were both wildly overcooked (and cooked at different times... turn down the grill, boys, this isn't cajun food), and wildly overpriced. $9.00 for a mushroom on a bun? Really, there are no frills to make it worth $9. The fries are quite yummy, but still, $9 is over the top. Also, this menu is all meat, all the time, so don't bring your vegan friends here if they are hungry. Will probably still go for drinks, but I'll eat at home. read more

Okay, for one: Get the fuck out of my bar. I hate you people crowding up the place. I'd give this place a one-star if I thought it would make you go away. But I just can't make myself do it. Stick to the burgers and fries or the dogs if you're eating. The corn in the summer is unfreakinbalievable. But their latest foray into brussel sprouts is a fail. Too bitter. And guys, you gotta take the butts off the sprouts. What I love about this place the most is that they make a damn good drink. No bullshit trades on the liquor. No shorting the drink. And the mixers are delicious and fresh. If you're sitting outside, please have some consideration for your fellow man. Don't stick your legs out in front of the door and have to be asked to move. This is a peaceful place in general, but someone might just kick your privileged, hipster ass. And if you want hustle, go elsewhere. This place is chill, and so is the staff. They take their time doing stuff. I happen to like the quiet, slo-mo atmosphere. It discourages manic crowds of loud-laughers and attention-grabbers. This is not a place to party your ass off. Just sit, have a drink and a quiet conversation. And we'll all get along just fine. read more

Keeping it simple - I like this bar, especially when the Florida Room is packed, or not an option for other reasons. Usually some good eye candy (what?), well poured cocktails, and the occasional Fugazi on the jukebox. Never had bad service. Haven't tried the food yet, but because of the aforementioned positives, I'm sure I'll be back to do just that. read more

What a great little hidden neighborhood gem! Last night I had what could possibly be the best portabella burger I've ever had in my entire life...dripping with a yummy balsamic marinade, covered with blue cheese, and served with a side of tasty fries. YUM! I never expected that anything ordered from a chalkboard menu behind a bar could ever taste so good. Red Fox was a tad dark for actual eating (though the ambiance was great for a romantic bar date) and the music was good and not too terribly loud to preclude actual conversation. I also noted boxes of Scrabble and dominoes behind the bar (though it was perhaps a bit too loud for Scrabble). There was also a lovely garden-ish seating area in front. Three words- hipster douchebag central. Between the preening mohawked gent in the "vintage" r&r tee who spent a total of ten seconds walking (strutting?) a total of five feet and the idiots on the entrance walkway all sprawled out without any regard for anyone ("Excuse me, sorry"- "Excuse you!"), this is a clientele who takes themselves way too seriously and has their own agenda. Its a shame, since I have it on good authority that this used to be a cool, chill place. I guess that's what one well-placed large ad in the Mercury will do, huh? That said, the service was cordial and prompt- the beer menu was above average, and the food menu looked interesting (especially the gumbo dog). read more

First off, well done to the chef; the food is great. However, the service is absolutely atrocious. A blonde woman who works as a bartender there was confrontational and rude to my friends and myself, both of whom just moved to Portland and it was their first impression of the venue. Both tell me they will never come back. I live only a block away and could give them lots of business but will not due to the service. read more

The big bartender with the big beard and glasses was rude. I ordered a tofu burger and he asked us why we would come into a bar and order food without buying beer. This is after he tried to convince us to get a hamburger "because they were the best in town." I've had them before and each time they were way overcooked and charred. Then we heard him making fun of us to other customers as we were walking out...about how we "ordered the tofu burger and didn't order beer and then one of us took the cheese off!" (my friend can't eat cheese). I don't make a lot of money and I was regretting leaving a tip after hearing the extent of this dude's confused dignity. Your attitude towards your clientele offends me. Tip from another human: If you are going to get upset that a customer spends money on something you provide, then don't sell it. Weirdo. I thought he was kidding at first, but it turned out he was just a dick. On a positive, the outdoor atmosphere is nice during the summer. Choose your own adventure. read more

I like this bar. It's the perfect place to take a date or just swing in early for a burger and a beer. The menu changes slightly but the gumbo fries and the amazing burger seem pretty consistent. They also have a nice patio next to a park which is great for summer beers in the sun. The staff is friendly and attentive too. The only downside is sometimes the bar can fill up with those obnoxious people who feel that they are entitled to everything and feel the need to go home and write bad reviews on Yelp because it's easier than trying to remove that stick stuck up their ass. read more

we were super excited for the raved-about gumbo cheese fries and brussels sprouts mentioned on several other sites. Also mentioned were spectacular boozy cocktails. we walked out when we were told that gumbo was replaced by an all-chili-based menu and there was no cocktail menu. sad. i'm sure it's a fine place if that's what you're looking for, but for christ's sake, update your own website (and maybe places like urban spoon and other aggregating sites) so people don't come in expecting your former self and leave dejected and frustrated. read more

Disappointingly not a Sanford & Son themed bar (someone really needs to get on that), Red Fox nevertheless runs with the more literal interpretation of its name, perching a stuffed, regal-looking red fox above a crimson-colored threshold. What's more, this Albina watering hole--attached directly to the back end of the Cherry Sprout Produce Market--is small and cozy... like a den! But seriously, folks. While the jukebox's selection of classic soul and obscure post-punk earns cred with the cool kids, the $1 cans of Old German draw in an older, blue-collar after-work crowd that loves loudly discussing, among other things, the greatness of Rickey Henderson. read more

I'm fully supportive of any pub that moves into my neighborhood, and I really enjoy The Red Fox. Nice atmosphere and pretty decent food. Enjoyed their caeser salad and the steak frites is pretty darn good, too. But, we go here for the drinking. The bartenders are typically the owners, so they care and they're nice and helpful too. Wine selection is well priced and good. I recommend the Fox. read more

This was one of my worst dining experiences in Portland. Staff was slow and clueless - OK, fine. But when they brought me my hamburger - pink, bloody and falling apart - I almost threw up. They didn't tell me that they 'cook' everything rare. When I expressed disgust they told me "don't worry, you won't get sick, it's really good meat". They then offered to cook another one so I said sure and requested medium-well. They brought me a different style burger completely, and It was still pink and fell apart in my hands. The whole thing was sick. They still charged me the full amount for the meal, and the service was aloof and just plain sucked. Will never go back. read more

The food I and drink selection is 5 star. They make My favorite burger in town. I get it on my birthday every year for like 7 years. But every time I try to get friends to go there with me.they refuse because they all have individual stories to share about how poorly.they were treated at one point or another . I don't care I tell them just order your food and move on. I would.like to eat there more if the staff was a bit friendlier my friends and I could go more often. So far I have yet to find a sexier burger in Portland. I am relatively new to the city and have been active participant in the foodee scene since my arrival. I must have tried 20 different burgers around town; many of which had been pitched to me as "the best". Nope. The Fox Burger is hands down the champion. Something about the quality of the beef and the manner they prepare it makes for a spectacular oral experience. Eat it. Then tell me if you know of a better burger in town. I am eager to see if one exists. Honestly, the Fox Burger would cost $25 in LA (my former residence) and $35 in NY (my former, former residence.) but here in lovely PDX the Fox Burger is a recession gentle burger at only $9. The owners Mike & Chuck are great people. My Son introduced me to the place and it is one of my favorites. Hard to get outside seating on a good day but worth the try. The steak is to die for the wife loves the bacon wrapped hot dog. Locally owned and the staff is wonderful, never had a bad meal, always go away smiling and full. If you like a place that loves good food, good drinks and happy to see you there, then this is the place for you. read more

This is one of my favorite Portland bars. It's laid back, not pretentious, rarely overly packed with "scenesters", great cocktails and beer options, jux box, super friendly staff, and a nice outdoor seating area out front next to the little courtyard on the corner of Sumner and Albina. It's far enough off of the Mississippi strip to get away from the crowds and feel more like a neighborhood bar, but close enough to be stumbling distance. read more

The best neighborhood bar, pure gold. On those rare blue skied days the outside seating is a refreshing delight. Nestled next to the quaintest little park that portland has to offer the green grass is the perfect compliment to the red fox. The drinks are a rainbow of delights and the food is wonderfully delicious. The owner is just the right kind of colorful. This bar is the hybrid of bar institutions. They have good drinks and a menu that no one can say no to. The meat is happy and the employees are consistently happy as well. You can walk through a sliding door and be in the Co-op in case you need a carrot for your vision. Because you won't believe your eyes when you see the amazing food that comes out of that kitchen. There is constantly changing local art displays of some amazing work at a fair price. This is a place where you have to go to the bar to place a order or get extra ketchup. The bartenders are not servers. So get what you want and find a place to chill. When your food arrives do not be surprised when your bartender asks you to meet her at the bar when you ask for more napkins. If you feel like you got shitty service then don't come back. I don't want to over here your conversation about trading stock or how the service sucks. You may think you need more ketchup until you realize that you don't need to drown your fries in ketchup to make them taste good. If you smile and be polite the service that you expect may come around. The working class is tired of pampering drunk rude people. If you want a quick bite in a well lit space go down to deschutes brewery where the folks are as jaded as you. read more

This bar was ok at first, but the experience went down hill from there. The atmosphere was sad and so were the people working there. I was here with my boyfriend for the first time and we ordered two burgers. Although the burgers were good, the service was not. The guy who delivered the food couldn't have cared less. And then the bartender went after me after I didn't give her a large enough tip. She served us two drinks which we picked up at the bar. I left a tip because of the server not because of her. If they served us drinks I would have understood. But honestly it was so uncomfortable when she came after us. I have never given bartenders a lot of tip. And because we were the ONLY patrons at the bar she expected me to give a lot. I honestly will never return. This is not acceptable behavior from an establishment. read more

The night began alright, in a way that would have garnered a three-star rating from me. The Red Fox just okay; not a huge selection of beer, dirty, and smells like smoke. It's a good little place to hang out if you want to knock back a couple of Lagunitas, but not a place I would frequent. THEN I went to pay and had just an awful experience from a bartender. Overrated and a rude staff. Sucks because, like many people writing here, it is very close to my house. I definitely won't be going here again and I would not suggest it.
