I've been here twice and I think that the food is truly exceptional. I'm going to run down most the things that I've tried here for anyone who's curious, but one thing to note is that EVERYTHING was great, so, even if I have areas that I might have liked differently, that might just be an issue of personal taste. Before going through everything, my high level favorites were:
*Smoked Riccota Crostini
*Heirloom Beet Salad
*Saffron Zucca
*Maple Custard (second place goes to the apple crumb cake, which was also awesome)
Now, to the details!:
*Smoked Ricotta Crostini. I thought that this was amazing. The portion is light (not small, just light). Our waiter recommended that we get this delivered with the desserts, which was nice. Very tasty, the honey and cheese is a great combination.
*Tuscan Chicken Liver Crostini. I'm not a huge chicken liver fan, so wasn't my favorite, but one of my dining companions is a huge chicken liver fan and loved it. I mean, she said it was one of the best things that she's ever eaten and she's eaten at a lot of great places.
*Heirloom Beet Salad. Loved it. I'm normally not a huge beet fan, but the beets were so fresh and I loved the pistachios and mozzarella. Really highly recommend.
*Burrata with Grilled Broccolini. Burrata is one of my favorite things, so I was excited about this one, but honestly I thought that the extra components almost took away from the dish. This might be a personal taste thing, but I like burrata simple with some crusty bread.
*Grilled octopus. Similar to the burrata, the octopus was perfectly cooked and incredibly delicious, but the extra sauces and components just took away from the octopus. Again, may be a personal taste issue, but our table all thought that the the same octopus with just some lemon and olive oil would have been better.
*Saffron zucca with heirloom squash puree. Unbelievable, truly amazing. This might have been one of my favorite things that I've had all night, and in the city as a whole. The quality of the pasta...words don't describe, it's so good. I'm stuffed right now and my mouth still waters thinking about it. Close to perfect.
*Spinach fettuccine with braised duck. Although very tasty, the saffron zucca was so incredible, that this one may not have been as appreciated as it should have been. The duck was great, but, again, I just couldn't stop eating the saffron zucca.
*Mezze rigatoni. Again, very very tasty and the quality of the pasta was flawless. I still think that I liked the saffron zucca better (more interesting flavors and I love mushrooms), but the mezze rigatoni is a definite crowd pleaser.
*Roasted spaghetti squash. I really really liked this. Very well cooked and I loved the hazelnuts on it. Really good, highly recommend, especially in the Fall.
Now, I know that this is already too long, but I have to talk about the desserts for a second, because these are what take amazing to unbelievable holy god good. These desserts are why I often prefer to come here over other city faves such as Rose's Luxury:
*Maple Custard with Caramelized Hazelnut. Yes. Just, yes. I've eaten a lot of food in a lot of amazing places. This is one of the best things that I've ever eaten. Ever. This is so amazing, I just don't even have words. This place is worth it if all it served was this custard.
*Heirloom apple crumb cake. Really delicious, almost licked the plate. Although nothing will replace the maple custard in my heart, this is a close second.
*Spiced pumpkin cake with chocolate sauce. Honestly, the cake was a little dry and I was a tad disappointed. HOWEVER, the ice cream with it was amazing. Coffee with chunks of chocolate, great flavor and texture.
So, after this insanely long review, you need to come to Red Hen. Waits can be long, but I think sitting at the bar is more fun anyway. Remember to save room for dessert! read more
