One of the most enjoyable dining experiences i've had in DC to date (others on the top of my list: The Dabney, Rose's Luxury, Thai X-ing). The food is stellar, but truly it was the service from the staff and particularly our server, Ejeon, that made it exceptional.
My group of 4 was a walk-in on a Thursday night, and we expected the wait. Luckily Red Hen is located near one of our favorite places to grab a drink & some light snacks (Boundary Stone), so the 2 hour wait from 7-9 wasn't that bad. We even got a text at 8:40pm saying our table was ready, which was earlier than expected.
We got the table in farthest corner on the window side. If you like privacy and and a more quiet experience, definitely request this table! IMO the main section of dining room can be a bit too loud. The table we got this time was cozy and peaceful, and provided a great vantage point for the activity in the open kitchen.
Right when we sat down, our server came over and read through the menu. And "read through" does quite cover it -- he described in detail every dish, and with such gusto and excitement I truly wanted to order everything! Ejeon takes pride in this restaurant and the dishes it produces, which is so wonderful - his adoration of The Red Hen is contagious.
My crew is "young & broke", and we decided to treat ourselves to this meal as a celebration of/farewell to one of us who is moving to NYC, so we only ordered one appetizer (the burrata). Ejeon, who found out I work for the company that does the garden out front (Love & Carrots), not only sent over two additional appetizers (the fried cauli, the goat cheese & heirloom tomato salad), but also glasses of delicious sparkling rosé!! For my crew, this was an extremely special treat!
For our mains we all ordered what The Red Hen does best: pasta. Ejeon informed the vegetarian in our group that she could order a "secret off-the-menu" pasta, the Cacio de Pepe. She did, and it was stellar - simple, but so rich and full of flavor. My friend ordered the fennel & sausage dish, which Ejeon described at "a hug for your stomach", and that it was. I ordered the calamarata, which interestingly came with chickpeas mixed in. My other friend ordered the squid in linguine, which was IMO the best dish of the night.
We thought we were too full for dessert, but decided to order anyway since it was a special occasion. Since he hadn't steered us wrong all night, we ordered what Ejeon recommended - the maple custard. We were a little skeptical when they brought it our right away, since it is a chilled dessert and we were expecting something heated/bruléed, but OMG. It was one of the best desserts i've ever had!!
SUM:
ATMOSPHERE: 4.5 - cozy, well lit, good decoration. Main dining area can get loud, and the wood seats can get a little uncomfortable for us "boney butts."
SERVICE: 5+++! Ejeon is amazing!!
FOOD:
Apps:
Seasonal Burrata: 4.9 - I mean, its burrata. Ours came on a delicious bed of corn and greens. The breadcrumb topping was a nice contrast to extremely soft cheese. I liked the one I had in the fall better (they change the bottom layer seasonally, and I think last time it had mushrooms and/or asparagus?)
Fried Cauliflower: 4.75 - fried without being heavy. It came out looking roasted since I don't believe it was breaded. The sauce under it seemed a little out of place, or perhaps there just wasn't enough of it. Great taste, though!
Heirloom Tomato Salad with whipped goat cheese: 5 - superb! Its tomato season, so anything with fresh tomatoes is fabulous right now. But that goat cheese was perfect...! I loved the lightness of it.
Mains:
Cacio de Pepe: 4.9 - perfect execution. Pasta was al dente, sauce was incredible rich, pepper was perfectly distributed with a nice "after kick". The only fault is that it is extremely decadent and filling - which isn't necessarily a bad thing for most, just a lot for us. Ejeon did recommend getting a veg or something as a side to "cut it"...
Mezzi Rigatoni: 4.7 - the fennel and sausage ragout - this truly was a "warm hug for your stomach" as Ejeon described. Rich, filling with delicious fat noodles. My one reservation was that some of the pieces of sausage were quite large, and I would have preferred a mince. It also would have been nice with a veggie thrown in... sausage goes so well with a lot of hearty greens.
Calamarati: 4.5 - my dish. My least favorite of the night, but far from "bad". The olives in the red sauce gave delicious tang, and the octopus was tender. However, chickpeas seemed out of place, and I could not tell at all if the octopus had been "charred" as described. Once again, perfect noodles!
Squid Ink Linguine: 5 - GET THIS! Perfect.
Maple Custard: 5 - Superb! The toasted hazelnuts and the maple flavor, which was not too overpowering... it was perfect (and this coming from someone who doesn't like maple-flavor). We licked the bowl (despite being "full"). read more
