One of my favorite places close to home. Honestly between Detroit and Ferndale, Detroit has the best Chai Latte!

This had been one of my favorite coffee shops in Detroit-nice vibe, lots of plugs, good light, very nice coffee. But the Internet hasn't worked the last few times I've been there. I'm so sad! I would love to keep going here, but I really need the Internet when I go to a coffee shop. If they fix it, this place gets five stars, but without, only three. :( read more

The vibe and aesthetic at Red Hook are what stands out to me. In an up and coming area in Detroit, there is a lot of energy and the atmosphere is very warm and inviting. The style of Red Hook is very contemporary modern with lots of plants to make it comfortable as well. The environment encourages you to be productive and is very relaxing. This is a great place to work for a short period or if you wanted to just snuggle up with a good book. The downfalls to this place are that the seating and set up is not very conducive to staying for a long time. The seats are not comfortable to sit in for an extended period of time and there isn't a lot of seating in the space. There is enough seating for under 25 - 30 people so you may not get a seat. In addition, the espresso was very acidic and was not the best I've had. The cheese apple scone was rather tasty though! Overall a good place to check out and I wouldn't refer to friends to go to work for an extended period of time. read more

This is my neighborhood coffee spot. It's a nice place to work (wifi!) and they have good coffee and snacks.

Friendly service, delicious coffee. Great hours. Really nice addition to the West Villages neighborhood.

I've been in twice. The coffee itself is very good. The staff however, needs work. I definitely felt like I was bothering the staff by ordering something. I/we were the only people in line on both visits, yet the staff seemed downright annoyed by questions about the menu, and pointedly gave non-answers. It's a bit out of the way for me, and even though I love Indian Village, I won't be back. read more

My first time to visit Red Hook. They serve Stumptown coffee, which is great. I had a Columbian Pedro pour over...delicious. (Wanted to try a nitro brewed coffee, but they had sold out.) Seating accommodates individuals better than groups, so keep that in mind if your going with friends. read more

You know it's a pretty decent coffee shop. Good coffee, no-frills, lots of baked goods. The problem is that it feels so sterile that it's almost unwelcoming. It's like old hipster and not in a fun way. You can hear the coffee shop saying, "I am really serious about my life and I'm really serious about my coffee and I don't really like color or fun things..." One of my favorite things about Detroit is that it's not pretentious. Red Hook, sadly, feels deeply pretentious. Also it's very clear that they made no effort to integrate any part of Detroit or the neighborhood they're in into the establishment...which is one of the hallmarks of gentrification (versus community development). In short you will be caffeinated but you will be caffeinated soullessly. For instance, instead of Zingerman's, why not try serving baked goods from any number of bakeries in the city? I mean, you could still charge six dollars for a muffin but be in community with and in Detroit. read more

One of my favorite places in the city. They serve Stumptown which is much better than any of the sludge you can find in my current neighborhood, and it is a welcome difference than the Anthology or Great Lakes that are served at pretty much every other restaurant in the city (which, don't get me wrong, I dig, but I like to switch things up!). Plus, I just realllllly like this spot, it's beautiful and located in one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city. I may be biased as I used to live next door to this building and can remember my excitement when our neighborhood finally had a coffee shop! I went every single morning and would splurge on Fridays and get a warm hand pie which are seriously good. Flaky crust and if you get there early enough, they'll still be warm. Now I really only make it out every couple of weekends since I try to diversify my weekend coffee experiences. But, Red Hook is typically one of the easier in and outs. The service is prompt and friendly and often the owner is around, which I always appreciate. There is lots of street parking plus there is a lot in the back. While you stop there for coffee check out the surrounding businesses; Detroit Vegan Soul or Craft Work if you need something more substantial than a muffin or a hand pie, Tarot and Tea, and Paramita Sound. read more

Great vibe and and selection of sweet and savory food items. And I love Stumptown. But I'm writing because I want to give a shout out to their customer service. On one visit over the winter, I got my car stuck in the snow. The owner and several regulars didn't bat an eye to coming out and helping me OUT. This is such a community gem, and why I love supporting local busines-- you don't get that just anywhere. The Villages are so lucky to have Red Hook in their neighborhoods! read more
