I'm not sure what's going on here lately. The staff seems like they are put out or annoyed by you ordering. I've also noticed a couple times that people(one each time) have been sprawled out and sleeping on the bench inside. It felt weird to set up my laptop while someone is laying down and snoring by you. Cute coffee/baked goods shop in Indian Village neighborhood! This place checks all the boxes for me. Single origin beans pour overs and delightful baked yummies? I'm there!! Mushroom savory hand pie: so good! Sort of like Thanksgiving stuffing flavor in a flaky pastry! Warm it up in a toaster oven to make it a hot pocket! Zucchini chocolate bread: zucchini thankfully isn't a dominant flavor here. Deep chocolatey goodness! Berry crumble: like a hand portable berry/cake! So good with coffee! We've enjoyed visiting Red Hook Ferndale since moving to the area in 2014, so we were thrilled to learn that they moved into the former Great Lakes Coffee in midtown. The space is large and they've done a terrific job with the space-ample room between tables, cool vintage objects and plants create a comfy, welcoming environment. This is a hidden gem in an area of the city that has incredible potential to become a very cool district. They are a true coffee house. Their coffee is low acidity and not bitter. This place does coffee the way coffee should be done. Adding anything to a latte from Red Hook is like adding ketchup to a filet; It requires nothing other than consumption and appreciation. The staff is always kind and professional. The seating area is an awesome blend of original mid century construction with some modern clean-up. Today was my first visit to Red Hook and I would absolutely return. The shop is tucked away in a cute residential neighborhood of Detroit so you don't have to worry about struggling to find parking like you would at some of the other shops around the city. Parking is free in the back and there's also street parking available. The shop is small and intimate with a lot of single person tables. I wouldn't recommend coming here to spread out with books or work to do but you could definitely get some laptop work done. I typically drink vanilla lattes with some sort of milk substitute. Although they don't offer vanilla flavoring at this shop they did have Lavender flavoring and there were quite a few choices for milk substitutes: almond, soy and coconut. I've never tried lavender in my latte but the staff highly recommended it and I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed it. I also tried the chocolate zucchini bread and really enjoyed that as well. I think it's important to note that this shop offers plenty of vegan options! read more

Golden milk and charcoal lattes are fun (and delicious!) departures from the standard espresso fare. But the thing I've really come to appreciate over the last few months are the treats!!! The baked good offerings here as of late (or probably forever but I'm just now humming the tune of the unsung hero) have been simply perfect. The tasty carbs are from Pinwheel bakery, and man oh man oh man are they great. Breads with crisp outsides and perfectly soft insides. Custard-y tarts with paired with fruits. The word "hipster" definitely comes to mind but the girl who took my order was kind and my honey latte didnt take too long to be prepared. Had a great experience here today! Fear not, in the midst of COVID-19 they still have a pickup window open. Everting is super clean and a well oiled machine. Today I tried the vegan peanut butter chocolate bar ($3.75) - it was crunchy, chewy and so good. Would eat this anytime anywhere. Try it!! For my drink I got the Black Tonic which is a double shot or espresso +ice+lemon tonic water. It's truly unique and incredibly refreshing. The staff here is friendly and it's in a lovely little spot on the west side. You're not too far from Belle Isle here, so go enjoy your drinks with a view. read more

I have been to Detroit on many occasions and I have never been to this place. It's recommended by someone and we decided to check it out before our appointment. The staff were so nice and welcoming. They patiently went over their menu since we explained that it was our first time. I had mocha and it was the best mocha I have had in years. The temperature was just perfect. Not too hot and not too warm and cold. Just perfecto! I just wished that we had more time to sit down and enjoy the coffee and the salted caramel brownie. Be sure to try salted caramel brownie since it's so dense. I hate anything that has salted caramel but as for this brownie, I can barely taste the salted caramel. This place is definitely a gem. Not only do I love this cozy neighborhood of Indian Village, but also the vibe of this very chill and laid back coffee shop! I stopped in Red Hook after brunch with friends and I fell in love with the whole neighborhood and scenery! It reminds me of the Bucktown neighborhood I really love in Chicago. It's trendy but chill and relaxed. I was here on a saturday afternoon and there were a few customers sipping drinks on the outside patio and a few more browsing their laptops inside. The music was great as they were playing some upbeat house music. The menu is simple, but the flavors really deliver. I ordered a soy latte with extra lavender. I took one sip and thought "summer" lol if that is even a word you would use to describe a latte! The lavender really made a regular soy latte just a bit more special. The baked goods selection was limited, but it could've been because it was super late afternoon. It's a great place to meet up with friends or just hang out by yourself and relax I turned my eyes to ceiling and noticed a beautifully hand painted tropical and colorful bird on the ceiling, and it's details like these that really make a place's charm stand out. read more

We really love the neighborhood where The Red Hook is located. Agnes Street is so cool, and the homes in Indian Village are full of character. As far as location goes, I haven't visited a coffee shop in the Detroit area that has the same uniqueness as The Red Hook. We went to The Red Hook on my birthday, because it was one of the coffee shops I have been wanting to visit for quite some time. Last time we tried to go, we found a note on the door stating that they had closed early because some of their staff members wanted to participate in rallies. I thought it was considerate of management to close the shop early so that employees could voice their opinions. So... when we visited The Red Hook, my wife ordered a cappuccino and I had an espresso - out typical order at any coffee shop. We both thought the espresso was slightly sour. Not to be confused with bitter espresso. I expect espresso to be bitter. The service was excellent. We were greeted by a kind young gal who answered the questions that we had. The shop was clean and full of character. We did enjoy our visit to The Red Hook, and we will be going back. read more

The Red Hook is the perfect spot in town to come and get some work or studying done. The vibes are really chill, the staff is extremely friendly and the coffee is amazing! They do play music, but not the distracting kind that you can't even hear your own thoughts. I've been getting some studying done here the last few days and you can really tell this is a spot where the locals go. I've had the peppermint mocha latte twice (seasonal) and have gotten a vegan/GF banana chocolate chip muffin every time and it's delicious! A lot of their food options are vegan and gluten free, and feel somewhat healthy which is perfect for the new year! I love this little place and am so happy I stumbled upon it! Definitely prefer going to the Ferndale location over this one. I wasn't so crazy about the attitude of the cashier, and if it's something that irks me big time about the food industry, it's poor attitude. She had it written all over her face, and my friends and I were not pleased with it. Still, we decided to get a slice of pecan pie and enjoy the cozy space. The slice of pie was good, but nothing amazing. We initially came to chomp on some of Sister Pie's creations, but they were all out. :( The pie looked good, but eating it was just blah. Thankfully, we just got 1 slice for the 4 of us to share. The space, however, is really cute. I love the hand illustrations of the birds on the ceiling. The tables and chairs have a nice layout that provide good lounging and privacy at the same time. Background music was relaxing and not distracting, perfect for conversation. One thing to note though - I have Verizon as my cell phone carrier, and there was absolutely ZERO coverage in the space, so if you plan on staying there for a while, keep that in mind. Other than that, we had a nice time. We weren't there for super long, but enjoyed a relaxing environment to chat and snack on some pie. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here again, but if I was in the area, I'd swing by, and hopefully that cashier isn't there and Sister Pie's goodies are available. :) read more

Yum the cappuccino I ordered was delish! It was creamy and flavorful. Prices are pretty high but i did enjoy my cap. The place was clean and super cute as well. They allow animals inside the establishment so I wasn't a fan of that. It was rainy and I was concerned this dog was going to shake the water off himself and get hair in my coffee. Sorry animal lovers but I don't believe animals should be allowed inside eating/drinking establishments. read more
