I live in ashe county which is limited in restaurants. I come to boone for my cancer treatments so with ashe being limited I always stop at a restaurant while I'm up here. I've tried quite a few restaurants and my only complaint is why I haven't tried this one sooner. This is easily one of the best restaurants in boone. I started out with the nachos and they are some of the best I've ever had. I read their reviews before I came and alot over people raved about the baha fish tacos, and I'm not a huge pineapple fan I ordered them anyway. They were amazing, fish cooked perfectly and the Sriracha sauce gave it a nice kick. Very friendly service and I will definitely come back. read more

Absolutely delicious! They source there products locally when possible which was evident in the Blue Ridge Plate which is a seasonal salad with crisp greens, micro greens, red and gold beets, tomatoes and fried goat cheese in a lemon thyme vinaigrette. We ordered delivery from The Red Onion for a special occasion dinner. We had: Greek Penne Pasta with Shrimp, Orange Glazed Salmon, Burbon Glazed Center Cut Ribeye, and Mediterranian Tilapia. The food was delicious! The steak was cooked exactly as requested, the fish was just right, the sides that came with the meals were spot on! I'm going to try to replicate the side dish from my tilapia meal! The last time we were in the area and had a meal here was when my sister graduated from Appalachian State, several years ago. On a business trip and a co worker suggested I try Red Onion in Boone. I was not disappointed. The Portabello Mushroom wrap satiisfied my craving for good food after only having a coffee and cinnamon roll for my work day. Full of mushrooms, zucchini,summer squash, spinach, a few onions all wrapped in rice. The basil feta mayo in it brought it all together nicely, and it was not a small wrap! Sides of sweet potatoes fries and guacamole were good as well. Got a in-house made key lime pie to go, I am expecting it to be good as well. Atmosphere was relaxing, and waitress attentive. Dinner was superb. Service was very accommodating. We were a large last minute group that decided the Red Onion looked like a great option (it was) They hustled to put together a big table for us. For what we ordered and the number of customers, the wait time on the food was too long. I had the chicken fajita wrap, which was huge but only because it was overstuffed with lettuce. The amount of chicken was meager. The plate was loaded with tortilla chips but they, too, were unsalted and bland. My daughter had the chicken salad plate which was underwhelming. Disappointed in our meals. We came for lunch and decided to have the 2 item lunch combo. We got the French onion soup and quiche. The soup was completely flavorless--I don't think they added one single spice to it, not even salt. Maybe the cook lost his sense of taste... The quiche was nothing special. The food and wait staff were great. My critique is an 8% inflation charge on final bill. Preparing to pay bill, noticed the 8% inflation rate. I called the waitress' attention to this. She apologized and brought over a laminated card explaining the 8% inflation rate. She apologized for the card NOT being on table when we sat down. She indicated all area restaurants were charging the 8% inflation rate. We were told this was done due to supply chain issues, etc. (spelled out on card). While we ate at numerous restaurants during our week's stay, NONE of them charged an inflation rate. These restaurants are as follows: Casa Rustica, Troy's, Our Daily Bread, Pepper's, Twigs, Capone's, Come Back Shack and Cook Out. We're not sure why this one lone restaurant charged the 8% and no others did. I question the tactic. read more

This was my second time here. Last time was three years ago. I have to say this is one of my favorite Boone restaurants. It's a bit small inside, but atmosphere is good, service is better. Had the pimento cheese appetizer. It was huge, way too much for the two of us. Plus they serve carrots and celery with the pimento cheese and bread. A great value at 6.99 for this appetizer. Both are our entrees were excellent. I had the Cajun Chicken Pasta. I couldn't finish it, but it was very tasty. My only minor comment would be there is too much broccoli in the order. My wife had a veggie burger which she said was excellent, in fact much better than one she had at Canyons in Blowing Rock. Dessert? Too stuffed to even consider it. Day 3 of road trip vacation food - dinner - The Red Onion Cafe So, by day 3, my (non-food-adventurous) family was tired of my using Yelp to find new and unique places to eat and so, that resulted in my boycotting lunch when the majority decided to eat a chain that is found in Orlando. I just couldn't. By dinner time, I had them back in step and they agreed to try a Yelp recommendation back in Boone. Yay! We had driven around the town for a couple of days now and passed a cute little spot I noticed called The Red Onion Café. I couldn't pass it by any longer, so on our way back from road tripping on Day 3 (we traveled from North Carolina, to Virginia, back through Tennessee, and finally back to North Carolina) we stopped to eat dinner. It was a long day and I couldn't wait to try this place out. (Boone is very close to where we stayed in Blowing Rock and there are tons of great restaurants to eat in both places.) We had very attentive and helpful service for dinner, and after taking our drink order we were served warm bread with an olive oil and seasoning for dipping. My mom decided on a salad, and opted for the house garden salad with mixed greens, red onions, carrots, cucumbers, button mushrooms, and tomatoes. I believe she requested some feta and pepperoncini. The salad came with a soft roll. My dad ordered a burger with fries. (I told you there were non-adventurous food types in our party. My dad likes his burgers plain.) I chose their tuna melt with a side of pasta salad. The tuna melt comes on an English muffin, is smothered in cheddar cheese and topped with alfalfa sprouts. The pasta salad came topped with parmesan cheese shavings. It was very good. Back to her usual order, the child chose chicken nuggets and a fruit cup. I really enjoyed our meal at The Red Onion Café and would definitely go back when we visit North Carolina again in December of this year. What a wonderful experience. I absolutely loved the restaurant, food, service and pricing! I called about a week in advance to inquire about reservations. The husband and I decided pretty last minute that we were going to go ahead and get married. We planned it in Boone and I called the Red Onion to find out if they could accommodate my part of 17 with such little notice. They put us on the patio and it was wonderful. The servers were great and didn't make a fuss about splitting up the check (I know it's sort of an inconvenience for the waiters but they split the checks with no issues). We decided to do a lunch with smaller portions and more reasonable prices and it worked out great for everyone. I ordered a bowl of french onion soup and the tuna sandwich. I loved the soup and the sandwich was, well a tuna sandwich. My only reason for marking down the place because I sort of expected something a bit more flavorful there. My sister ordered the Linguine (I think?) and she loved it, the sister in law ordered the quiche and really enjoyed it as well. Overall, we were very pleased with out dining experience! read more

I took my older sister and her family while visiting one weekend. We ordered chicken nuggets and fries, spaghetti and meatballs, the mushroom lasagna, pesto pasta with chicken, and the filet with asparagus. We first waited 30 minutes for a 5 top (2 children and 3 adults), when there were plenty of open tables, no wait and we were told 20 minutes. We finally sat and our waitress finally came to take care of us, if I can even call it that. She did not need to be in customer service to say the least. She never asked us how our meal was, another waiter had to refill our drinks, and when we sent our food back barely touched she did not question it. I was a waitress where taking names for wait, clearing tables, putting in food along with basic customer service to all my tables was required. It frustrates me that an establishment that comes in contact with many tourists looking for the "Boone experience" have to endure what we did tonight. Now for the cooking, I am not sure who is the Chef but a lot of the issues we had were basic cooking no-nos. 1. Pesto pasta, the diced tomatoes they had were obviously canned that have rinsed and thrown in a the pasta. Which was upsetting because they advertise "local sourcing" on their website. The portion size was huge, with 1/2 cup of pecans for garnish... The pasta was overcooked for my preference and I received maybe a few chopt pieces of chicken for a $4 upcharge. 2. Mushroom lasagna, this should not be on the menu at all. The "herb chardonnay" sauce was congealed and overwhelming with rosemary. Pasta noodles were overcooked and everything was covered in Monterey jack cheese. Also, putting parsley on top doesn't make your presentation any better. 3. Filet and asparagus, how do you serve asparagus that hasn't been prepped? The ends were tough because they were not snapped before cooking. The filet and potato was cooked well. 4. Kids meals, they were the best thing we ordered. 5. My sister also ordered French onion soup. The onions were not caramelized, broth was too thin and the soup was burning hot. The food wasn't amazing but it wasn't bad! We had the veggie pizza and the spicy veggie burger. Veggie pizza - loved the variety of veggies on the pizza, but the fontina cheese had a very strange and almost sock-like flavor to it. The pizza had a good crust, but was dripping in oil. Spicy veggie burger - everything was pretty good about this, it's just that the guacamole took away from the tastiness of the burger. The guac was very plain and lacked really any flavor.
