Terrific experience! Food was terrific! I had the Caesar and the croutons were so buttery and wonderful! My husband had the house salad. This balsamic house dressing is to die for! I had the burger with avocado and gruyere. It was amazing! The pom frittes were excellent. I know if seems silly to rave about fries, but the seasoning was so good you don't need ketchup. My uncle had the steak salad. It must have had an entire steak on it. Absolutely huge and he loved it! Then the desserts! We shared the Italian lemon wedding cake and lava cake. OMG! While not terribly busy they took the time to accommodate us with outside seating since we were traveling with our dogs. We were driving from Houston to San Antonio and decided to see if we could find a local non-chain place to have lunch. In Flatonia, on the main drag of this small town, we found the Red Vault Bistro. This unassuming restaurant turned out to be one of the highlights of our Texas trip. Certainly the best lunch. The lunch menu offers the basics, and my wife and I each ordered hamburgers - mine with bacon and gruyere cheese; hers with thin slices of avocado. Perfectly cooked to order, presented in an artisan bun, and paired with amazing pomme frites, this was the best burger and French fry combo I have ever eaten in my life. And being 73, I've tasted a few! Our burgers were delivered to our table by Chef Gabriel. Don't be put off by the outward appearance of this establishment. Inside you will be eating in a delightful space highlighted by intriguing artwork that makes your stop here so worthwhile. The wine and dessert menus are extensive. Found this jewel in Flatonia TX a month ago, thanks to Yelp. Located in the quaint old downtown area. The owner was our sever describing the menu items. We ended up with a fabulous gourmet lunch. We began with the crab cakes. My husband ordered a sandwich on French bread that is literally from France. My burger was too elegant to call it a "burger". My husband ordered the clam chowder, but I told my husband no way could we eat all that food. Thank goodness the owner brought us a sample of the chowder. This place is amazing came here for lunch for my sister in laws birthday and everything was perfect from start to finish we had the bruschetta which was to die for I had the rib eye steak sandwich and it was delicious I don't know what they do to those fries but they are the best I've ever had my sister had the mushroom ravioli and she jut about licked the plate. A great place in a small "Flatonian" town (population lessthan1500) directly in between San Antonio and Houston. I stopped by here with a friend one afternoon for their lunch special on our way to San Antonio which is a choice of: Meat - roasted chicken - chicken and dumplings - and some beef dish I've neglected to remember Sides (as many/as much as you want and boiled) - peas - carrots (delicious) - green beans - mashed potatoes - corn - ect. DIY Salad - sauerkraut - pickles - picked tomatoes and onions Dessert - banana pudding and wafers ...which was all $7.25. It was a quaint but delicious meal, simplicity at its best. Great people around the area, extremely hospitable, especially considering we're minorities coming into a predominantly Caucasian area that looks like a radical sect could be presiding. We got a few odd stares here and there, but all together very pleasant. To find it, it's in a strip of shopping centers, if you park anywhere in the main town area, you can walk there. Right around the corner from "Ole Hotel" (very cute B&B), their establishment is working on getting a sign up. Apparently Wednesday nights are sushi nights, Thursdays are karaoke. read more

I was looking for a new restaurant in the area and I came across this place while browsing yelp. The reviews and food pics looked awesome so I told my wife and daughter to get ready for a date night. When we arrived, we were blown away by the look and feel of the place. You definitely don't feel like you're in Flatonia, Tx... from the wine to the appetizers, the entree and dessert; it was all absolutely amazing. Service was exceptional. The kids had great report cards so we had good reason to feast on sushi for Wednesday Night Sushi at RVB. Everything was more than delicious, the staff is always very accommodating, plus I love their bathrooms - super clean, feels like a comfy and stylish powder room. Anyway, back to the food: we especially loved the Fried Siu Mai (Pork Dumplings) and Vegetable Spring Rolls with Noodles. And, of course, our Buddha and dragon sushi rolls were mouth watering. The kids gobbled up the edamame so quickly that we decided to order more. And the wine selection is good. If you want a more unique cuisine in Fayette County, plus excellent quality, I think Sushi Nights at the RVB is a top choice. read more

I went on a Saturday night with a group of 6 and to my surprise the restaurant was essentially empty, which made me nervous. We sat down and ordered wine and were given a recommendation by the waitress on which wine was her favorite. We ordered it, only to have the owner come around and tell us he was out of that bottle. We ordered a different cabernet, which ended up being really good anyway :) For apps we got the crab cakes which were super good! They aren't the traditional flat, round crab cakes you see at stores - they look like breaded crab meatballs. I ordered the filet mignon (medium rare) for my entree and although very good, I found it a little overcooked for my taste. The sauce and green beans that accompanied it were perfect though! The rest of the table seemed to enjoy their meals and although I didn't get to try everything, it all looked delicious. What a delightful surprise. This food ranks with any Paris bistro. Excellent wines and service contribute to the making of a great meal. We had to come back a second time on our way back to Houston. The Saturday special fried chicken was out of this world. The chicken was moist and flavorful because they marinate the chicken overnight. What a hidden little gem! We stopped for dinner on our way from Houston to Gruene because of the yelp reviews and WOW! I had the special, rack of lamb, and it was better than Masraffs and other nice restaurants I frequent in Houston. My wife had the chicken marsala and it was good but not amazing. I'm not from Flatonia and I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was here, and how professional (yet personable) the service was as well. Salad was good- nice and light. Crab cakes delicious!! Husband ordered rack of lamb, the house specialty. Cooked perfectly, the veggies and potatoes were nicely done too. I ordered the filet mignon which was delicious. And the molten chocolate cake wasn't bad either. I'd definitely recommend! The only thing that kept this from being a 5-star review were that I asked for my steak medium rare and it was well done. This is a fantastic restaurant in my hometown, Flatonia. The owner and chef, Gabe, is a great guy. He takes great pride in his food and it shows. Everything I have ordered there has been fantastic. Waited all week for this adorable place to open up, and we were so excited to get in there and check it out. We did make reservations, though on this particular night it was not very busy. We were the first of three tables on this relaxed Thursday night in Flatonia. I had already done my research and read their reviews, so I ordered the bruschetta appetizer. It was delicious! We ordered our entrees and my sister ordered a house salad before dinner, which came out immediately after the appetizer was served, so I politely asked for our service to slow down a bit, so we could relax and enjoy our time there. The owner/server was extremely welcoming and very sweet. We heard from the owner about a terrible fire that had recently took this place to an almost irreparable state. I am so glad they recovered, they are a darling couple and really help add a much needed delicious retreat in this small, tidy, unpretentious town. I wish them much success and joy in their future. The community is so kind and everyone really seems to love one another. My sister had Chicken Marsala, I tasted it, very good. House salad was another home run. I splurged and ordered the duck. I ordered it medium-rare. Sadly, it was well-done. I liked them so much I said nothing. My adorable son fed it to the cats that live on the porch at the wonderful Olle Hotel. The cats found nothing wrong with it. Stuff happens. We had the lemon cake and we all loved that. Next year when we again travel from California to Flatonia I will try again. I carbo loaded on the french bread but still managed to wolf down a really big and tasty pork chop. Not sure how much fine dining there is in Flatonia but this arty little place would be a star anywhere. They have Wednesday sushi night and occasional wine tastings. The chef is indeed French. I hate to kill their 5 star rating but... This is definitely a popular local restaurant. The waitstaff welcomed everyone by name. We were pleasantly surprised that it was sushi night. Our waitress was nice enough, but she forgot to ask us if we wanted anything else other than water to drink. She did come back and ask us. It took a long time to get our edamame and it was cold (the bottom of the bowl was warm). Our rolls came out about 2 minutes later. The rolls were EXCELLENT! She never came back to check on us and we had to ask for our check. Another waitress brought us our check without a pen. Honestly I'd give this place a 2 but the sushi was really good. Very nice stop between Austin and Houston, quickly off I-10. Got the crab cake and Chilean sea bass and the daily special - all good flavors. The crab cakes and the sea bass are in the same sauce though - white creamy with capers. I think the best part of the night is that we stopped at this small, dark, quiet town of Latonia hoping to get some hot dinner, and this eclectic French restaurant/art gallery was a true surprise! For a wonderful treat when west of Houston, make a stop in Flatonia. Flatonia you say? Yep a small town just a bit off the I 10, Flatonia is quaint for sure, and The Red Vault bistro is a real gem. A gem like the hope diamond. I love to test new places in small towns. This leads me to places like The Red Vault. So we pulled up and the sign said closed! Well we started to calculate what to do next and the sign turned to open. We were early, it was 11 AM. So in we went to find a charming interior, lovingly decorated in early mix and match. Mostly mix and don't match furniture, a great high ceiling, art on all walls and the friendliest greeting one could ask for. As we had been driving for a bit, I slipped into the bathroom, to find it lit by a chandelier and very quaint and homey. Well, the menu pretty much stunned us all. So many Incredible sounding choices. I had the Bruschetta, chicken soup, and a caesar salad. When the bruschetta came out, it was fabulous. So fabulous that I ordered a second and dropped the caesar salad. I got to taste the caesar as one of the other members of our party has ordered a large caesar. It was my kind of salad, and so fresh and tasty. My wife had ordered the salmon plate and it was very high class. My chicken soup has shredded chicken, and lots of it, and some vegetables and loads of flavor. Good Job! We all agreed that the chef, really knows what he is doing. Our waitress was an owner, Elizabeth, and she was very friendly and responsive. The meals were all top quality. I found the prices to be very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food and environment. Wow! I want to go again! I would definitely be a regular, if I did not live 1,900 miles away. Super charming. There were 5 of us that were passing through and decided to give it a try. The patrons looked at us crazy when we walked in but the owner is the cutest lady that welcomed us with open arms. Great atmosphere. Great wine, great food and we had wonderful fellowship prior to getting back on the road. You should definitely give them a try. We stumbled upon this jewel while waiting for our kids who we had dropped off at the corn maze in moulton. We were expecting to eat at a Dairy Queen and instead feasted on rack of lamb and succulent ribeye prepared by a French chef. It is worth the drive from Victoria.
