My partner mentioned that this was the best sushi place near Bastrop, and after hearing so much praise, I finally decided to visit. Unfortunately, the food was just okay, and the menu felt overwhelmingly large. What used to be a sushi-focused restaurant now includes a broader Asian menu. I believe there has been a change in management and chef, and the food quality seems to have been compromised compared to before and this is something my partner also confirmed. I ordered the curry dish. It seems kitchen staff didn't know how to make it. Instead of a sauce it was more of a paste, not saucy. Paid almost $17 bucks for something I ended up tossing in trash. The staff was very friendly and welcoming although the food just did not even come close to being par. Party of 7. Food was acceptable but not quality I expect. Although the food looked nice it was missing flavor. I've been here about 5 years ago and the food was really good. I read the recent reviews before I went and I saw people comment that the place wasn't as good as it used to be, and unfortunately they are right. I had the bento box. I was disappointed with the quality of the beef. It had a strange gritty texture. The rest of the party said the food was just ok. Service & Atmosphere We arrived about 8:45 pm. They are open until 9:30. But we felt rushed the entire time. At first the server wanted us to order fast which I understood due to the time. But then they brought the check right when they served the food, which is tacky. Then by 9:25pm the workers were all lined up behind us waiting. They had already cleaned the rest of the restaurant (it's very small). I think they should close at 9 if the staff expects to leave at 9:30pm. Therefore, the atmosphere was uncomfortable and the service was rushed. I will not eat here again. I had 2 out of town visitors in addition to my family and this place was not impressive. read more

I've been coming to Kyoto for years -- it's one of my go-to places, and I've brought friends and family here many times because I've always enjoyed the food and atmosphere. That's why today's visit left me so disappointed. I arrived at 2:10 PM, knowing they close at 2:30, and was greeted right away with, "We close at 2:30." I asked if I could still order to eat in, and was told yes, but "we're done at 2:30." When I asked if that meant I had to leave by then or just order before then, I was asked how long it takes me to eat. It caught me off guard. Instead of feeling welcomed like usual, I felt rushed and questioned before I even sat down. I understand closing times, but the approach matters. A friendly welcome and a simple explanation would have gone a long way. I've always valued this restaurant for its food and the good experiences I've had here, but today reminded me that customer service is just as important. We're Orange County transplants, spoiled on great sushi. We literally would not have considered buying in Bastrop if it didn't have a sushi restaurant. When we first came here, we were surprised to see that half the sushi rolls contain cream cheese, bento box options include General Tso's chicken, and the meno includes eggrolls and hot and sour soup. But that's not to say they don't also offer great Japanese food. You could say it's fusion, but I think they just include popular Chinese dishes because they aren't sure Bastrop is fully ready for full-on Japanese. But I anticipate that, before too long, they'll feel comfortable enough to go full Kyoto. And their true Japanese dishes actually are pretty good, I must say. They have hibachi, nigiri, sashimi, teriyaki, seaweed salad, edamame, gyoza, tempura, udon, sake... the things you look for in a good Japanese restaurant (not just sushi). This visit, we ordered a tempura appetizer and three entrees (one each): a chirashi bowl, teriyaki chicken, and a salmon combo platter. All were very good. And also shared a bottle of Tyku sake. The chirashi included ten pieces of sashimi, comprised of yellowtail, redfish, salmon and tuna. They were all very good. The tuna was great, actually. The teriyaki was well-prepared. The sauce wasn't too thick or sweet, and had a nice teriyaki flavor. Teriyaki should be about mirin and soy sauce, not about high fructose corn syrup, and they get that. Our son, who has been to Japan and actually speaks Japanese, enjoyed his salmon combination, which included a salmon roll, a spicy salmon roll, and nigiri. The service was surprisingly good. I was quite impressed. They were extremely attentive, observant, and helpful. Prices are what I expect for Japanese food. No complaints. And I'd quickly give them five stars if they dropped the Chinese dishes and elevated Bastrop to being a city with an authentic Japanese restaurant, which they're perfectly capable of. I mean, we like Chinese food as much as anyone, but we already have a nice Chinese option in town. We're used to having many distinct types of Japanese and Chinese restaurants to choose from (ramen, sushi, udon, hibachi, Japanese street food, Szechuan, dim sum, noodle houses, Hong Kong BBQ, etc). And we're just not sure why there's a need to put Chinese and Japanese food on the same menu. That said, we'll continue coming here. And during peak hours, there's often a wait for a table, so it's clear that what they're doing today is resonating. But maybe, as the wait times get longer, they'll start transitioning to what it seems they really want to be... not "Asian," but distinctly Japanese. read more

Been a couple times now, and never disappointed! My favorite roll so far is the Shaggy Dog roll, the Tonkotsu ramen is excellent as well w delicious pork chashu and savory broth. Service is always excellent for us, and the space is small but cozy and well decorated. One of my faves in the area! read more

First time dining at Kyoto Sushi and I was excited since the Yelp reviews at this place were pretty highly reviewed. The decor was pretty cool and the service was really great. Our waiter was very observant, refill our water, and checking in with us often. It was a bit uncomfortable because the waiters stood in front of the sushi bar and watched everyone. Our table was right next to the sushi bar so the waiters were standing right next to our table. This place is a smaller restaurant so it's a bit cramped. We had ordered the general tso chicken bento , 2 sushi roll, and scallop nigiri. The general tso sauce was decent but the chicken to batter ratio was more of batter than chicken. The chicken was really dry. The miso soup was ok. The California roll that came with the sushi roll fell a part when picking up with chop sticks and high is a very bad red sign. The crab Rangoon was really good. The bento box came out first and a few mins later the rolls came out. For the two rolls I got, it was really terrible and probably the worst sushi I've ever had. The sushi rolls was tasteless which I don't even know how that is possible. The salmon on the rolls didn't taste fresh and didn't taste like salmon at all. It's like the salmon was drain of all the salmon taste. Super weird. The eel sauce and spicy mayo on the rolls didn't taste like how it's suppose to and was tasteless. The fried shrimp tempura in the roll was cold and was thick in batter and you can't taste the shrimp at all. The "scallop" nigiri was NOT Scallops and was a white fish. It was too tasteless. I'm honestly in shock how sushi can be bland and tasteless even with all that sauce. I'm also in shock how they served me "scallop" nigiri but didn't give me scallops. They should have told me they don't have scallop nigiri instead of making a sale off a fake scallop nigiri. Tsk tsk tsk smh ‍. I thought something was wrong with my palate so I asked My husband tried the sushi too and he confirm what I thought. I had maybe 4 bites of sushi. The waiter was concern and ask why I wasn't enjoying the sushi. I told him it wasn't good and fish is not fresh. He didn't do anything about it. We didn't want to waste the sushi so we boxed it but when we got home end up throwing it away after my husband tried to force eat one piece. Do I recommend this place? We live out of town but make our way to come to eat here. The sushi rolls, tempura, Bento Boxes, and their soups and salads are tasty. We haven't had anything that we dislike. My partner enjoys their specialty soda as well. The restaurant isn't the biggest but they try their best to get you seated as soon as possible. But if you don't want to wait, they also do takeout. Every time I visit there is a gentleman who is helping out at the front, I'm not sure if he's the owner but the way that he provides customer service you would think so, but that goes for the rest of the staff as well, though he takes it a notch further. The Sushi was made to order in front of me and superb. I spent $79 plus tip with one Asahi Dry beer. Miso soup ($3.95) , vevgie tempura $7.95 (skip). One order (two pieces) was $6.50 so on high end. Great service and food. I had my 3 year old and he accidentally knocked over some Miso soup. They quickly helped me clean it up and kept saying not to worry. I can't remember any other restaurants being so understanding. The food was great as well. We had the Love Boat I think it was called, where it's a little of everything. Also had some soft shell crab. Everything was delicious. For a small restaurant they are always hopping, yet other than the volume it is actually very comfortable and you don't feel squished at all. Easiest 5 star rating for a restaurant. I'm honestly so sad that I grew up right outside of Bastrop and didn't realize this restaurant existed until recently. The sushi is such high quality and tastes so fresh and not fishy at all. What I missed to take a picture of was the Kyoto Ocean Salad which is ridiculously delicious and refreshing. The orange chicken is the perfect amount of spicy and citrusy without being too sweet. The spicy salmon is definitely spicy but stupid good. The restaurant can get pretty busy, but the servers are really nice and will seat you as soon as they can. The inside is kinda small, but really clean and cute. Do yourself a favor and NOT miss the: Onion Soup - slightly spicy dark broth with shaved mushrooms, fried onions, and a sprinkle of chive. Tuna Tower (shareable appetizer) - stacked white rice, crab salad, spicy tuna, sliced avocado, fresh tuna cubes, and a generous, bright sprinkle of orange roe., allll sitting on a plate decorated with three sauces. Tear it down, bite-by-bite, or mix it up and eat it. Either way, Heaven! All the sushi is fresh and made-to-order. If you're not into sushi, there are a ton of grilled or fried traditional choices.
