Absolutely a 5 star place. What a nice restaurant and excellent food. Rustic ambience and the folks here are also 5 star. We will definitely be back!!!

We were on our way to San Antonio & hungry. Made a search & caught our attention the 5.0 clean rating, which is not common. We had the Cheese Platter for appetizer, then Fried Chicken, Fried Cod, Cole Slaw, Side Salad & Pomme Frites......every single thing was delicious & we endorse the 5 stars this place is a must in one's bucket list‼

This place is a hidden gem! I must admit that I never expected to find a place like this in such a small town. I found myself in Flatonia for lunch on a Wednesday. After trying several other restaurants that were closed, I settled on this place. I wasn't excited because of the $$$ on Yelp, but it seemed to be the only option in town. Boy was I surprised! This place is located in a historic commercial block in a fabulous old building. The dinner prices may be steep (I didn't look), but the lunch prices were completely reasonable. There was a selection of sandwiches, salads, full plates, and salad. I settled on the turkey sandwich that came with fries. It was phenomenal! It was served on French bread and was fully loaded with turkey and extras. The fries were also just as good. I'm pretty sure they had Parmesan and truffle oil on them. My entire bill, with an iced tea, was only $11.

Great mid-day buffet, and simply fantastic evening dining, best wine selection in central TX.

Sushi is my ultimate favorite food, so after reading countless glowing reviews, I was beyond excited to finally experience Sushi by Scratch for myself. My friend booked this about a month in advance and thoughtfully noted my dietary restrictions. There was Wagyu on the menu, which they seamlessly substituted for me without hesitation, and they also accommodated my pineapple allergy with zero issues. The attention to detail started well before the first bite. Guests are invited to arrive about 30 minutes early to complete check-in and participate in the pre-omakase ritual. After checking in, we were seated in the waiting area and served a refreshing non-alcoholic ginger beverage, followed by canape service. We were given 2 beautifully prepared bites as we waited to transition into the full experience. It set the tone perfectly. Once guided into the omakase room, we were greeted with a handwritten wooden name plaque at our seat, a small but thoughtful touch that immediately made the evening feel personal. With only a 10-seat counter, the experience is incredibly intimate. The chefs introduced themselves, and we were presented with the beverage options. Two of us opted for the Japanese whisky pairing, while another chose the sake pairing, both excellent complements to the meal. Before the first piece even hit the counter, the chefs revealed the night's journey on the wall: 16 wooden plaques, each hand-lettered with the names of pristine fish and indulgent bites. It reads like a quiet flex on hamachi, madai, akami, toro, A5 wagyu where each course waiting its turn. It's a reminder that omakase isn't about choice but about surrender. One detail that truly stood out was how effortlessly accommodating they were. When my dietary restriction came up again, the Wagyu substitution was handled with no hesitation, no awkwardness--just a seamless adjustment that still felt intentional and indulgent. Throughout the meal, the chefs chatted with us as they prepared each course, explaining the fish, techniques, and flavor profiles. The interaction felt warm and natural, and the intimate setting made it easy to connect not only with the chefs but also with the guests seated next to us. Overall, this was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. I would highly recommend Sushi by Scratch to anyone who truly loves omakase. I'm already thinking about doing this again next time at their LA location when I get back home.

Amazing experience and worth every penny! We will be back. The level of service is incredibleread more

Short version: Great food and excellent service!…read more To start I ordered the Tuna Tartare, which is so good. The tuna and the avocado were super fresh, and the rice was perfect. This was a lot bigger than I expected and well worth the price.. You could share this with a friend or two. For my entree I had the New York strip steak Hibachi. The steak was cooked perfectly (medium rare) and the veggies were all very fresh. It came with a large side of rice, which was OK. (I prefer it sticky) For dessert I had a banana-strawberry pie that was very tasty. I was worried it was going to be too sweet, but the filling tasted like a good soft serve ice cream, and the chocolate crust gave it just the right amount of sweetness. The restaurant was clean, but the tables could use some work, as the wood is scuffed and old. Tablecloths would be an easy fix. Also, the plastic table tent that had the desserts on it was pretty crusty. Almost turned me off to the dessert! Great service! The waitress was friendly and attentive. She found the right combination of checking on me without being intrusive. I've got guests coming to visit in the next few weeks and this is definitely on my list of places to take them for a good dinner.
