They treat you well and are always welcoming a true treat with local Bistro vibe where the proprietors get to know you and treat you like valued guests. We used to go only on special occasions but we have found ourselves finding a reason to visit more frequently. Super cute place, apropos for a bistro. Very comfortable. We had a reservation and were seated immediately at opening and the place quickly filled up. Service was excellent from start to finish. We were never rushed. We started with the escargot which were served with some basic bread. Delicious. Then each of us had the large mussels with frites. I had the Marinières (white wine, cream, shallots, garlic) and my friend had the Basque (white wine, Spanish chorizo, red pepper, chili, smoked paprika). We both loved what we got. The frites were very tasty and served with two dipping sauces. They were not as crispy as I would've liked but they were very good. For dessert we shared the lemon tart which was the perfect ending for a delightful meal. So many delicious sounding things on the menu. Will be back next time in town. read more

While visiting our adult daughter in San Antonio, I was hoping to find a nice French restaurant that was close by and reasonably priced. After reading many positive reviews on Yelp, we decided to try La Frite Belgian Bistro. We initially attempted to make a reservation for three through Yelp, but it wouldn't allow us to book for our desired time. We were able to secure one reservation for two and another for one. Fortunately, after calling the restaurant just prior to opening, they kindly combined the reservations and accommodated the three of us without issue. When we arrived on a Saturday evening, we were pleased to find the main dining area small and quaint, creating an intimate and charming atmosphere. At first, we thought this was the only dining space, but they also have additional storefront dining areas on each side, providing ample seating. We arrived shortly after opening, and only a few tables were occupied. That quickly changed -- by the time we left, every table in the restaurant was filled. We were warmly greeted at the door and seated at a front window table, which offered a great view outside. The gentleman who seated us also served as our waiter. I don't recall his name, but he was exceptionally professional and attentive, providing outstanding service throughout the evening. We ordered a carafe of white wine, which our server recommended as a great value -- and it truly was. For starters (using non-French names for simplicity), we ordered a large portion of mussels in a basil, garlic, butter, and white wine broth. The mussels (moules) are offered in seven different sauces, and after tasting ours, I wish we could have tried every one of them. They were plump and fresh, served over an abundant, flavorful broth that paired perfectly with the fresh bread -- ideal for soaking up every last drop. Our second shared appetizer was escargot prepared Burgundy-style in a rich herb butter sauce. The escargot were tender, earthy, and generously coated in a garlic-forward herb butter that was absolutely delicious. Again, the fresh bread ensured none of that wonderful sauce went to waste. For entrées, we began with the Steak Au Poivre. We selected the tenderloin, which arrived perfectly cooked to medium rare. It was tender, well-seasoned, and accompanied by crisp fries and a fresh selection of cooked vegetables. Our second entrée was a crab and mushroom crepe. The delicate crepe was filled with fresh crab and mushrooms in a light white cream sauce that also draped over the top. The flavors were fresh, balanced, and beautifully seasoned. Although we were extremely full, it was impossible to pass on dessert. We ordered both the lemon tart and the chocolate tart. The lemon tart featured a crisp, flavorful crust with a firm, well-balanced lemon filling that delivered just the right amount of brightness. The chocolate tart shared the same crisp crust but was filled with a rich, decadent chocolate center with a smooth consistency that allowed the flavor to linger pleasantly on the palate. Hands down one of my essential San Antonio restaurants. Lively but relaxed. Classic but unpretentious. A treat but always a good value. The moules frites are always a star, and the prix fixe menu is generally an excellent deal. My star of the show, however, is their pear crepe for dessert - not only my very favorite dessert in the city, but a top ten of all time. Service is always attentive and knowledgeable. So happy we tried this place! Made a reservation for Friday night but even as we enter the restaurant, there were still open tables. The restaraunt is actually quite big, with 3 different sections. We were sat right away & our server took the time to explain the 3 meal course they offer & other items from the menu. We got our drinks quickly & soon after the food came out. Everything was delicious. The seafood puff pastry was different from anything I have ever had, & the price in comparison with the amount of seafood that came with it was very generous. A nice little hole in the wall in what looked like a quieter, older part of town with some other interesting eateries nearby. I had the mussels with a combination of the Basque and Thai sauces and the wife had the chicken salad with a side of frites. The mussels were very meaty and of a very generous portion. The frites were served with ketchup and I believe remoulade dip. The chicken was very tender and cooked well. Everything was tasty and service was fast and attentive. Would recommend. read more

I had lunch with a dear friend today and honestly I didn't know why the bistro wasn't packed with diners! Conveniently located off of S Alamo near the riverwalk, the bistro has indoor and outdoor seating. I was warmly greeted upon entry and the owners were interacting with diners as well. While I was waiting on my friend to arrive, Tim the server ensured I was taken care of with refreshments and made suggestions of the soup while I waited, which I accepted. He didn't hover but kept an eye on my drinks and his approach was very pleasant. The restaurant itself is delicately decorated appropriate for a French bistro and designed in a U shape so that max conversation can be had with the diners without being overcrowded by tables. Their lunch menu was packed full of options and fairly priced! I had a cup of tomato basil soup, full serving of seared tuna salad, and crème brûlée with ice tea. All for $30 including tax. The tomato basil soup was so creamy and rich. The basil wasn't overwhelming and complemented the freshly made tomato soup so well. The mixed green salad with seared tuna was perfect with portion and the amount of protein! I had seared tuna in every bite. The delicate mustard salad dressing was just enough to enjoy the taste. The avocado slices infused with the dressing made each bite so delicious and smooth. The crème brûlée was a nice finale to lunch. It added just enough sweetness to satisfy my craving. Late post on one of the participating restaurants for Restaurant Week! Take note of La Frite Belgian Bistro in January for the next round of Restaurant Week! It is one of the few participating restaurants where the dinner prix fixe menu is still $35. Many of the participating restaurants are at $45 or $55. Dad had the Lemonade, Hubby had the Cider, and I had the Halter Ranch Grenache Blanc. I chose the Restaurant Week menu which started with the Red Wine Poached Pear, the entree was the Red Snapper with jasmine rice and vegetables, and Chocolate Mousse. Hubby had the Salade de Fruit et Fromage and Confit de Canard (duck confit). Dad had the Crepe au Jambon et Fromage (crepe with ham and cheese). Everything was delicious! This place does fill up so make a reservation if you can. There is a private lot for parking but be early! Come check this place out! read more

La Frite is truly a San Antonio institution. Service is always great, with delicious nightly food specials. This visit I stuck with my favorites. A large bowl of perfectly cooked mussels in a Basque chorizo sauce and an accompanying basket of piping hot frites. You can selected from 5 different sauces for your mussels! I've been hearing about the wonderful food at this restaurant for years. I don't live close by but this weekend I had the pleasure of dining there. What a quaint, relaxing while energetic atmosphere. I had the sea bass and my guest the beef tenderloin which I tasted. Both were cooked to perfection with accompanying sauces I wish they could sell. Great service, wonderful wine selections. Let's be clear the food is excellent, maybe aside from their cesar salad. But in terms of service, they are seriously lacking. We have been there once before, and service was okay - we just chalked it up to them being busy. But our second visit was fairly frustrating. When we ordered our food, we had asked for some mussels as our starter, but they told us they were completely out. We understood and ordered something else instead and thought nothing of it. However, 40 mins later, the people next to us ordered mussels and not too long after, 2 giant bowls of mussels were served. When we brought this to the mangers attention it was clear he didn't care, and only said "well they called ahead." Mind you, we had a reservation as well. It's just an extremely dissatisfying experience. While the food is good, it really feels like they don't care about you as the customer. Unfortunate. read more

Lunch with some girlfriends, we all enjoyed their lunch menu for restaurant week. I had the pork scallopini and it was very flavorful, the pork did have quiet a few pieces of fat and gristle that were disguised under their savory sauce. Overall a veery flavorful dish. Mussels were also cooked tenderly simmered in a soft wine broth. It does seem as a family owned establishment that might need a bit more staff to make sure patrons are fully attended to, we've had to ask for refills a couple of times and reminder for silverware that was missing. For restaurant week we decided to visit La Frite. This restaurant has been on my list of places to try for quite some time and it did not disappoint. The restaurant itself is very welcoming with a smallish footprint in an old building on S. Alamo St. This neighborhood has undergone a significant transformation over the years that now gives it a very fresh and hipster vibe. Ordered: Salad Verte - A field greens salad with a slightly creamy balsamic dressing. Pork Scallopini with Marsala Sauce, Angel Hair Pasta and Vegetables. - A thinly cut and lightly breaded pork loin with a very nice marsala sauce that mixed well with the angel hair pasta. One quibble: the pork was slightly overcooked and required a knife to cut. Pan Seared Trout with Jasmine Rice, Vegetables & Lemon Sauce. - The pan seared trout filet was perfectly done with a flavorful creamy sauce that accompanied the dish very well. Aromatic jasmine rice with a vegetable medley was a perfect accompaniment. Chocolate Mousse - The chocolate mousse may have been the most interesting of all because it wasn't the super-smooth chocolate mèlange we're familiar with in the US. This less "processed" version allowed you to experience all of the elements individually while mixing in your mouth to become unified. Terrific. We also decided to try the namesake dish...FRITES!! we were provided an ample serving along with a garlic, aïoli dip and regular ketchup. Very good. The regular menu is so intriguing that I can't wait to stop in again and try other items. The price point is reasonable, staff accommodating, and they hit all the notes you expect in a great meal.
