If I could give more than 5 stars I definitely would. I was stuck at Reno airport and called for last minute services. My call was promptly returned and Barbara walked me through times of available services and made recommendations for lunch at the Renaissance as well. I've been to quite a few very nice spas and The Refuge was right up there if not better. The Spa itself was beautiful and well appointed. It was set apart by the amazing guest experience. Staff made every effort to accommodate my situation, communicate it to their team members, and follow up to ensure my satisfaction. Allison was the best massage therapist from whom I have had the benefit or receiving therapy. The entire experience was so lovely that I shared the news with my weekend hosts and took my daughter back for services on our way back out of town! I would have given them a 5 star review, however my entire experience was affected by how dirty the entire spa was. Recently I signed up for the Ultimate Pampering Package. After I checked in and changed I was never checked on again and never once offered a drink in the entire 7 hours I was there. Instead, after I was fully relaxed and didn't feel like running around looking for a spa employee, I called the spa to order some refreshments and asked them to bring it to me, which they did. There were VERY limited options when it came to guest amenities. As usual the bar was a ghost town, a couple bottles of bottom shelf liquor and not a single bartender/employee in sight as I sat there in silence. I was very surprised how little amenities they have. The entire spa seemed desolate. For example, if you sign up for the Ultimate Package, you are encouraged to come early to relax and enjoy your guest amenities while you wait for all 4 services (which are an hour each). You are given a FULL day pass which means you have more time after all your services to continue to enjoy the amenities. However, the amenities come with... 1. A small infrared sauna, which the benches had a horrendously dirty and sweat ridden cover that one had no choice but to sit/lie on. 2. No inside pool, but there is one outside hot tub that had a nice temperature but seriously needed to be re-tiled, it had dirty dishes from the morning, and when I say the pool area was dirty... that was putting it mildly. Also, (and I swear I'm not being dramatic).. afterward, my wet clothes didn't smell like chlorine after, they smelled really really bad like swamp water. Kind of concerning. 3. That's actually it. That's the end of the amenities list. The rest of the amenities is a massage bed that you pay extra for. The salt room has no salt that you actually put on your body, it's a salt wall that you sit next to. So basically it's you and the same 5 women sharing the hot sauna all day because there's not much else to do. Once the sun hits the pool full force (with no cover) no one really wants to be out there. There are endless places to sit and relax. I think they could give up one of the many guest lounges to offer for more guest amenities. There are also WAY too many private rooms for services. There are 12 empty rooms sitting there at any given time every time I'm there. If this spa really wants more guests buying the Ultimate Package, I would suggest more amenities. I feel like I paid for the services and so much extra when, for the most part, all there was to do was sit in the guest lounge or sit in the hot sauna or sit in the other guest lounge or at the empty bar. Last bit- the overall cleanliness. The women's locker room was pretty gross. There were blood drops, dirt and foot prints on the floor of the only two bathrooms available. It was obvious the bathrooms had not been cleaned all morning (or even from the night before). The rug and the benches by the lockers were absolutely filthy. The massage rooms are not cleaned afterward, there were greasy foot marks all over the floor when I started my massage treatments. As I said the outside pool area was a sad place. It needs major renovation, the faded spray painted art could use some love, the pool and tub need to be re-tiled and the ground around the pool and hot tub were brown from so much dirt. I have a feeling the manager/owner probably runs things very... old fashioned. They expect their young employees to deep clean instead of hiring a cleaning team. Very mediocre approach. All in all, the three stars I'm giving are simply because my services were AMAZING. They were all professionals and very kind. I wanted to stay until they closed (which was at 7pm), but they started unplugging machines, turning off the sauna and closing everything down around 5:45-6pm. The employees' incessant need to take off early basically forced me to leave the spa early, which made me kind of sad because I technically paid to be there till 7pm. I let the front desk know of the cleanliness situation and how it affected my experience but there wasn't much that could be done except offer me a free beverage. I'm not sure I'll be coming back, definitely not for the ultimate package. I think I'll check out their sister spa or just go to California the next time I want a full pampering experience. read more

The Refuge Spa is a beautifully, curated, female AND locally-owned spa inside the Renaissance Hotel in Downtown Reno. A sister spa to Dolce Vita Wellness Spa, it is aiming to compete with the larger casino spas in our area. While it is a solid upgrade to Dolce, it is not quite on-par to compete with some of Reno's larger casino spas. Refuge features beautiful locker rooms, co-ed dry sauna & relaxation room (Reflection Lounge), cute bar, float pod, & party room (with doors that close, helping to maintain a quiet atmosphere for other clients). In comparison to larger casino spas in the area, Refuge's main drawback is its absence of hydrotherapy (hot tub, steam room, cold plunge) and lack of variety in relaxation rooms (salt, zero-gravity, etc). If you visit between late May-mid Oct, you can take advantage of the hotel's beautiful 4th story rooftop pool, adding to the amenities available at Refuge. Poolside food & drink is available, but due to COVID, you will need to get a menu from and place your order with Refuge front desk staff (they will happily deliver it to you poolside). There are so many wonderful treatments to experience at Refuge! I had the privilege of getting a Powerhouse Facial (complete with full-size take-home serum) and an incredibly serene, deeply-relaxing Black Rock Mud Wrap from Angie. Angie is an absolute gem, and it is no wonder that she is Refuge's Lead Esthetician...Can I get a slow clap for her? I also had an incredible Essential Massage today with Teri. First massage with a new therapist can tend to be a crap shoot, but Teri worked out all of my tension spots so beautifully I was barely awake when we were done! Thank you, Teri! While I feel Refuge lacks some of the best spa amenities I crave, I actually feel that they are ideally situated for pandemic spa services. It is smaller and boutique, and fewer amenities means guests are in and out faster. There are ample hand washing and sanitizing stations, and the beautiful Reflect lounge offers delicious, individually-wrapped madeleines and biscotti (with ample hand sanitizer!). You can order delicious salads from the Daily Grill delivered to Refuge at their super-cute Rise Bar (offering cocktails, mocktails, wine, and other delicious elixirs). Masks are enforced, but interestingly enough, I haven't found masks to impede my spa experience, much to my delight! Front desk staff has always been pleasant, friendly and helpful, albeit quite young. They are practicing excellent hygiene and aromatherapy practices, and the lobby boutique is just exquisite. I wish I had taken note of the name of the front desk gal that helped me out today- the other attendant was busy checking in a couple, and this young lady not only expedited my check-in and preferences, but she also made a great cocktail and perfectly coordinated my lunch delivery prior to my treatment. To the powers that be, please check my visit from today, this young lady deserves some praise (in addition to my tips). Refuge is a beautifully-curated, locally, female-owned place to take a day away during these trying times. Do yourself a favor, and take some Refuge if you can! read more

My experience with their nail salon was a complete let down from start to finish. Their services are pretty pricey compared to a standard nail salon but I was willing to pay the extra because you gain access to their other spa amenities. For what it's worth the locker room, waiting room, bar, etc were all gorgeous and if my experience hadn't been what it was I would have made them my go to nail salon in Reno. To start, while picking a color, I was shocked at the limited options. What girl doesn't spend time online picking out fun colors/designs before a vacation to have the perfect looking nails that fit the mood? So all of the options I had saved to my phone quickly went out the window because I had very few options to choose from and none of the colors matched what I wanted. But it was too late to find another nail salon so I just accepted that it was what it was. I then asked if they did designs and she gave me a book that showed stamp designs. When I inquired about those she said the girl who worked there before her took them with her so they didn't have the stamps. In the middle of the service she let me know that their stone warmer was broken so they were going to upgrade me to get free paraffin wax instead. I told her that the service I booked already included paraffin wax so I hadn't been expecting hot stones anyways. She told me it did not include it and that it was an upgrade. I showed her on the website where it says it is in included and she said that "Oh well there are disagreements on what services are offered since there are two locations". I would have ignored all of these disappoints because I could choose to go somewhere that offered designs and color options in the future but then, 2 days into my vacation, my nails looked like this. The reason I get gel nail polish for vacations is because it doesn't chip. So I am not even sure if they used the correct polish on me because I have never seen this happen before. On my trip I got a call from the manager that they would refund me for the manicure portion of my service. They said since I paid in cash they would be happy to give me a credit but I insisted on getting an actual refund. So she said I could come pick up the cash refund at any time when I returned and to just let the front staff know that it was approved by her. When I arrived, the girl working had no idea what I was talking about and said she was unable to look into past clients in the system to try and find a note about my refund. She said the manager would be there in 5 minutes and she could help then. 45 minutes later the manager still was not there but they finally got her on the phone. She told me that they said I had had to give 24 hours notice so that the owner could write me a check. This was not the pick-up protocol I had been told to follow and couldn't believe I had wasted another 45 minutes. It was just a super disappointing way to end an already disappointing experience. read more

I had a pedicure. The gal asked me if I wanted my legs massage - I said, "Yes please!" but then she didn't do it. Weird. It was all a big rush. I was the last appointment of the day and that became obvious that I was stopping her from leaving. She even took 2 phone calls while doing my nails! A spa experience is meant to be relaxing and a good spa experience makes you feel amazing. Overall, I didn't feel like I was her priority at that time. For a 35 minute pedicure it was also very expensive. In addition, felt pressured to leave a tip. I doubt I will ever go back. read more

So I saw a couple negatives reviews which made me quite hesitant. They had a Groupon offer available for couples massage. Before purchasing I called up to ask a view questions and feel out the vibe. The receptionist was wonderful and provided me all the information needed and I ended the conversation with booking a day/time for me and my partner to get the couples massage package. Then went ahead and purchased the Groupon. Leading up to the trip I extensively researched online yelp/website/social media as to arrive fully prepared on what to expect. The only downfall I found was that they didn't have a pool. Which was fine as we were staying at a hotel GSR that had a large pool area so it wasn't a big issue. They gave me a call the day before to confirm and give me a chance to cancel or make adjustments. Which I appreciated. When we arrived (recommended 30 mins before massage time) we were immediately greeting by the reception staff who were lovely! Super friendly and welcoming. They got our information and led us on back for a tour. The atmosphere walking in was instantly that of calm and relaxation. The decor/lighting was perfect and just the feels we were looking for. We had been rushing around the day before so this day was all about relaxing and detoxing. The areas were pristine clean and fancy. I loved the changing rooms! They were not stingy with products/towels like most spas and the robes were plush and comfortable. High quality products in the showers. During the tour the member of staff informed me that we were able to use the hotel pool after our treatments which instantly made the day that much better for me! Lol as I had expected there not to be a pool. The other areas shown to us were the VIP room, LED Sauna, the lounge and bar. Everything looks so well kept and inviting. We got changed into our robes and slippers and had a drink at the bar while waiting for our massages. Our bartender was awesome, made really good drinks! You can definitely tell the employees love working here! Our massage was wonderful. Perfectly relaxing and much needed. After we got champagne and chocolate to nibble on in the VIP room. Then we made use of the other facilities. We jumped into the sauna for 30 mins which was great! It is powered by LED lights so it's not steamy, which normally is difficult for me to breathe in as I have asthma. So this was perfect! And then after this we went to the outdoor pool, there were barely any people there and it was super private. Artwork on the wall and you can see a bit of downtown Reno. The sun was hot but the water was a little cold so we spent 30mins in the pool. Overall from beginning to end it was such a great experience, will definitely come back and will definitely recommend to others! The ladies were all so lovely and made us feel very special! So many positive things to say, where do I start? Dolce vita is our favorite massage spa place to treat ourselves every year so when I heard about them opening up a sister location (the refuge spa) I just knew I wanted to try it. They are located in the Renaissance hotel which may explain why their prices are a bit higher than at dolce but we still figured why not give it a shot. We booked our usual made for two couples massage, which comes with wine and chocolate. Our masseuses Stacy and Skyler were wonderful and we very much enjoyed our massages. Since they are still in their "soft opening" there is still some construction and finishing touches they are adding. We did hear some drilling but they did warn us and asked if we were okay with it. They also offer sauna access and a float pool is in the works. And above all their customer service was commendable! We had two spa finder gift cards but forgot to bring them. We fortubately were able to have a photo of the codes sent to us and Linda at the front desk was extremely patient in figuring out how to enter them into the system, making a few phone calls, and managed to let us redeem them. We truly appreciated her effort and patience! Definitely plan on coming back! Also as soon as we entered the hotel, we were escorted to the spa. The raffle, food, drinks, free massages, and STUNNING decor all caught my attention but it's the staff that really put this experience over the top. My mom and I get massages almost every year for our birthdays, so we are no strangers to spas, and we both just had THE MOST INCREDIBLE MASSAGES. My therapist was Timothy, and it became almost instantly evident that he takes an immense amount of pride in his profession, and has made it a science. Being in the medical field, I instantly identified his knowledge of anatomy physiology and how he has applied it. He noticed the imbalances in the way my anatomy laid at rest, and spent extra times in those areas, taking no time at all to determine what those actually were. I am blown away at how amazing this massage was. Thank you Timothy! My mom had Terry, and she said that she attentive to her problem areas. My Fiancé and I purchased 2 Swedish massages yesterday and was very upset with one of the massages. My Fiancé had a masseuse who applied basically no pressure and it was a rub down versus a Swedish massage. She requested more pressure 3 times and the masseuse would apply very little pressure again. At the end of the service she told my fiancé that she would have booked a deep tissue massage. Never in my life has a Swedish massage not offered at least medium pressure, especially for my fiancé who does not require heavy pressure. The masseuse clearly was lazy and would not provide normal pressure unless she was paid for deep tissue... I will say that my masseuse was great, however I did have to upgrade to deep tissue to get the normal pressure everyone is used to. The amenities are incredible and I did enjoy it, but management needs to enforce staff to actually care about the service and live up to a standard Swedish massage pressure. Or management needs to warn patrons that the Swedish massage is light pressure..... So upset as it was very expensive!!!! read more

I had a great massage by Mia! The lovely spa is well appointed and clean with plenty of amenities. The outdoor rooftop pool and jacuzzi were relaxing on a sunny day but it closes during winter. I would highly recommend and plan to return when I'm in town. The relaxation room is quiet and perfect for reading. The Refuge Spa was a more relaxing setting than the Atlantis. Though it is lacking in some of the more elaborate pools etc. it makes up for it in the intimacy, hospitality and expertise of the aesthetician. It was a last minute booking that I was able to book! Both Val and Savanah (receptionist) were very helpful over the phone. Saw the prices and compared with other spas and I decided- I'm going splurge and treat myself and so I did! THE REFUGE SPA... is on the 4th floor of The Renaissance hotel. The hotel is stylish with beautiful art pieces inside and a restaurant that has a river view! I was already in the area, so I showed up about 45min prior to appt time. I was greeted very politely by Savanah. I'm glad everyone there was nice and didn't discriminate. She also gave me a tour since it was my first time. First off, love the warm colors and the vibe of the whole place. It was clean, everything was in its place, nothing messing, nothing was amiss, more of a upscale/elegant spa, relaxing music playing throughout the facility and friendly staffs. LOCKER ROOM...Inside my locker was a luxorious bath robe and cute slippers. The locker was a little struggle to lock but the staffs were very helpful. THE RISE BAR... since I was early (I'm a jack'n coke gal but it wasn't available) so I settled for a cocktail- Gold Fashion, nice. Oh and Savanah was the bartender too! MY MASSAGE EXPERIENCE... WOW! Loved every second of it! All oils, essential oil diffuser and lotions had a pleasant smell. I had the pleasure of Maura being my massage therapist and esthetician. Loved the massage experience so much that I got a facial afterwards. Yay me! Wasn't too lucky on mani/pedi... no availability..... AFTERWARDS... took a shower and loved their powder room. It had all the essentials: differnt types of curling irons, blowdryer, Bobby pins, q-tips, cotton pads, combs, razors, mints, lotion, deodorants, hair ties. I would have liked a water dispenser inside the locker area. I found myself in the reflection room a couple of times for water. TIPS: * arrive early so you can utilize the sauna (of course before and after) * every room has a little buzzer for assistance * book during the weekday rather then the weekend. I booked on a Wednesday and it seemed like I had the place to myself (love it!) Thank you REFUGE staffs! Thank you for being pleasant and considerate. This may be little to some people but I apologized for not knowing how to use the locker and you said I didn't need to apologize. Thank you for being open during this pandemic and even though the cost is on the higher end...you are worth it! You made my "REFUGE SPA" experience delightful and memorable!
