Relaxing spa experience. Comfortable and clean environment. Staff knowledgeable , friendly and helpful

I always look at negative reviews with a open mind, and it takes me a lot to write one, but I can definitively say I will never use The Refuge Spa for any services, ever. My first impression of The Refuge Spa was good. The receptionist was friendly and helpful, but that is the only good thing I can say. After viewing the menu online, I called to schedule a massage. After I had scheduled the massage, I wanted to change my service to a pedicure a few days later. However, I was informed that they were not fully set up for nail services, even though they were on the menu. I'm not a marketing expert, but I was quite confused why they would advertise nail services when they were not equipped to perform the service yet. This was more of an annoyance than anything, and not a major deal. Since they didn't have a nail service, I decided to reschedule my massage for six weeks after my original appointment. Fast forward 6 weeks: I get a phone call at my scheduled appointment time asking if I was on my way. I panicked and checked my phone looking for a missed call or voicemail confirming my appointment the day before - nothing. I immediately called the spa back and they told me that my appointment had been confirmed so I would be charged for the full service - $195!!!- and there was no way they could reverse it. Apparently, when I confirmed my appointment back in January and rescheduled it, it counted my appointment as confirmed for SIX WEEKS LATER!! Are you kidding me??? I spoke with the manager (name sounded like "Bill") and explained how I completely understood how important appointments are, but the process used at The Refuge Spa is broken. I am still out $195 and The Refuge Spa's process is still broken. Needless to say, I will never book there ever again. Also, for a "new" spa, $195 is ridiculous for a massage price. I was hoping the atmosphere and experience would change me from being a regular at The Peppermill, but I guess I'll never get to find out. read more

I'll start off by saying I have been twice to this spa. Overall, I have enjoyed my experience both times. My one gripe would be a lack of amenities. They do have a pool and an inferred sauna . The pool is for the whole hotel, so kids can be there. The inferred sauna is nice, but doesn't replace a good steam sauna. I assume that the lack of amenities is due to space issues. The facility itself is clean, relaxing, and quiet. Where it did shine was my massages both times. They employ amazing, well-trained professionals who provide wonderful massages. My partner and I had nothing but glowing reviews for our massage therapists. We also tried their spa bar and both had the Collagen Glow Cooler, which is a mixed drink with a taquila base. So tasty and refreshing! I haven't tried their other services yet, but will add more to my review once I do. Overall, I recommend this spa if you are looking for a quiet retreat and a wonderful relaxing massage. I will also add we were able to find massage appointments same day, which you cannot do really at any of the casino spas, so that is a plus! read more

My friends & I decided to do the Groupon for a $60 gel pedi and drink. We went last Saturday 3/5 and all of the employees there were incredibly kind and helpful. The Groupon does come with a spa day pass so we hung out for a couple of hours and got some drinks. All in all it was a good experience. The reason I am leaving two stars is because my pedicure already peeled off... when I normally get a gel pedicure it definitely lasts for more than 4 days & I was just disappointed in the quality. read more

My wife and I left feeling both relaxed and rejuvenated after our session. The atmosphere is beautiful and all of the staff are gracious and professional. Love this place! I ordered three express services ( massages and a facial) plus general admission during a trip to Reno, and I enjoyed the experience so much! Timothy did a great job helping me with sore muscles after a two-day snowboarding trip, and my friend said her facial was also super relaxing and her skin felt awesome afterwards. The sauna room was small but cozy, and not overly hot. My friends and I were able to relax and enjoy the time together sipping on a drink. I also loved the eucalyptus shower mist that they have in the shower, and we all bought one immediately after. All spa services are reasonably priced. Highly recommend! read more

I'd like to preface my review by stating that I've never been to a spa so I have nothing to compare it to. That being said, I was highly impressed. To start out, parking was easy and free. The spa is on the 4th floor of a hotel and immediately upon stepping out of the elevator, it smelled like heaven. You walk in and there's a beautiful area where you can buy various products. The front counter is so neat! I checked in and the girl who helped me was super friendly and helpful. I got a deal on Groupon for a one-hour float in their sensory deprivation tank and was really excited to finally redeem my coupon! I was given a tour of the facility first. The locker room/bathroom is very pretty and very clean. They have a locker set aside for you once you check in with your name and a robe and slippers (you set a lock code so only you can open or lock it). The restrooms are clean and there are showers available with all the amenities you could possibly need. The lounge is really relaxing and they have drinks and snacks. I got into my robe and locked my things in my locker and went to the lounge to wait for my appointment. The tank was REALLY cool. Only about 1.5 feet deep and the water isn't hot, it's more body temperature. You get the option to leave the lights on or not and I left mine off. The hour was really relaxing and it was nice on my lower back to just float and not have any pressure on my joints. There is quiet relaxing music that plays and a squirt bottle with water in case you get salt in your eyes. The room has its own shower so you can shower right when you get out. Must try the tank! The entire spa is indescribably beautiful, I raved on and on to my boyfriend about the chandeliers, the reflection sculpture, the art, the softest throw blankets, and even the small make up towels they offer in the locker room. Let's start by saying that this spa is beautifully done. From the reflection lounge, to the locker room set up, to even the treatment rooms! It was such a relaxing environment. I split up my services into two days just so I can enjoy the spa and to be able to go in and use all their amenities. My facial from Angie was one of the best. Her touch was gentle and relaxing even the extraction portion wasn't bad. The next day I went and saw Sonja for a deep tissue massage and her pressure was exsctly what I needed my neck and shoulders are always a problem for me but with her help she was able to take all the pain away! The employees & massage were excellent. But...you have zero amenities such as a hot tub, pool, steam room, etc. The "reflection room" was merely a waiting room and the dry spa was little and uncomfortable. The floating pod was an "extra service". Our group spent over $2400 for a VIP experience / room and were very underwhelmed. Again, employees, host and massage were great, all else failed. read more

The massage was amazing! But the pool/hot tub was out of order so we spent $2,300+ to get massages and to sit in a room that didn't have enough room for all of us to sit. The other amenities were an additional charge and the champagne was $48 per bottle. It was overpriced for what we received. Also, nowhere on the paperwork did it state the pool/hot tub was unavailable! It actually stated that we bring our bathing suits to enjoy the outdoor pool/hot tub. Skyler was AMAZING and I would go back to her for a massage but I would not spend a day in the spa at that price! It is NOT comparable to the other spas in the area. I would assume that is why there was only one other person in there the entire day. I would not recommend this spa. read more

My brother and I spent 5 days skiing with family in Squaw/ Tahoe and were in need of relaxation and repair. We booked immediately when we saw the spa was located so close to the airport as well as inside our hotel for the night. This spa is gorgeous! What an amazing experience. I felt so renewed after my treatments. The people working also has the sweetest and most calm aura. I had a deep tissue massage, facial, body wrap, and Mani/pedi (a rare treat for myself!) And would recommend any of those treatments. I purchased a spa day for my best friend and myself who were in absolute desperation to have a nice relaxing day. She just started her own business and I have been rampant with school projects and papers...so needless to say we were both stressed. I originally really wanted to book with this sister's spa Dolce Vita Wellness Clinic but they couldn't get us in for two facials at once and recommended we check this place out. I booked the couples massage for us so that we could enjoy it together, initially she didn't have a great experience. The masseuse wasn't listening as intently on what she requested and the hot stones got mixed up, she really didn't want them but I did and didn't receive them. She also made a lot of noise when she was re-lubricating her hands up...this disturbed my ability to relax, as well as hers. My massage was fantastic, although was surprised to hear that after going 6 years without a massage and the amount of stress I've had in that time, that I didn't have any knots. The masseuse just said it felt like I hadn't had a massage in a while. I know my body and I know where I carry my tension, I've had massages done by professional massage therapists in a medical clinic setting and I know for a fact that I always have knots in my shoulders and neck. Aside from that, I really enjoyed my masseuse. Next came the facials, we both enjoyed them but I believe that they are overpriced for what you're getting. I've had facials done at other spots by estheticians before and from that I usually know what to expect from a $155 facial. This one was a little disappointing and it left my skin really patchy and dry afterwards- which is odd because it was supposed to be a super hydrating facial. I have very oily skin so it takes a lot to dry me out. Was pretty disappointed by that. I did voice some suggestions when we were leaving, and was called by the manager of the spa who was very nice and listened intently on what I had issues with. She offered to have my friend and I return for another spa day pass on them (no services, just a day pass), but I live in CA and she lives in OR so that's going to be pretty challenging for us. I did request that my friend get another massage experience at no charge because it wasn't great for her and it was important for me to have her be able to relax. She booked it with the gal who did mine and said that it was so much better the second time. So I am grateful for that. Not sure if I will return for services here just because of the amount I paid and left feeling like I didn't get much from spending that $465. Overall, the atmosphere is really nice and the lounge room has a really cool art piece hanging from the ceiling that adds to the relaxing ambiance. Would probably go back if I just wanted somewhere quiet to reflect on my thoughts, but probably not for a massage or facial. read more

I was very excited and happy that I was getting a massage from this place. By the end of the massage this girl w/ blue hair and tattoo put all the pressure on the nerve in my neck, really hard like she hated me both sides of my neck. No pressure at my back, yet put all the pressure on my neck. Then the guy at the front desk with blonde hair gave us wine and put it in a plastic cup, which is weird because we pass the bar inside the spa and there's a lot of wine glass. Then throw a chocolate on us. I never experienced a massage where someone put all the pressure on the neck, I get massage twice a month in San Francisco. I could report this place anytime. My daughter and I decided to get a massage while we were in Reno. I searched a few spas online and Refuge was one of the only spa's that had a few last-minute appointments available, so I booked an appointment for a facial and massage. The spa is located on the top of the Renaissance Hotel. The ambiance of the spa was really nice and relaxing. The Spa music playing through the speakers was also relaxing and calming. We walked up to the desk and were immediately greeted by two nice ladies at the front counter. We checked in with them and then we were taken on a tour of the spa. This was a large spa with a swimming pool, and they offer alcoholic drinks and smoothies. I had a mimosa before I started my massage, and it was good! While we sat the bar, our masseuses came and got us. I was taken back to a room to start my massage. I requested a deep tissue, and my masseuse did not disappoint. The massage was relaxing. I was also given scents of lavender to smell as this is supposed to relax your body. I found it to be an awesome experience and I'm sure I'll be back when I'm in Reno again. read more

I've had my fair share of massages, and Halee and Skyler provided the best massages my partner and I have ever had. We didn't want to leave. Megan also gave me a wonderful facial and took great care of a breakout I was having. The amenities at Refuge aren't quite as robust as at some of the casino resorts in town, but the treatments and customer service were much better. read more
