First time visiting this bar Friday afternoon around 5:30pm. Stopped in because board outside advertised $2 bud lights on happy hour special till 7pm. We had a few beers. 6:30 my friend ordered 4 bud lights and bill came out to $20. $5 bucks a piece for 12 oz cup. When he told bartender the sign outside said $2 till 7pm, they said there is no sign outside. Sure enough it had been removed. When we pointed up to the big screen TV that was still showing daily food and drink specials, that clearly said $2 bud light till 7pm, they promptly turned the tv off. They would not honor the advertised special. La Mesa Oktoberfest was going on right outside. So maybe this was an isolated experience to make some extra monay on a busy night. I gave this place 1 star for the actual $2 beers we got billed for before 6pm, which is a deal. Free popcorn and dive bar vibe earned it a second star. Fun bar, but if you go get a verbal price check on each round just to be sure you don't get a jacked tab. read more

I was forced to attend an event at this place... never heard about it before... walked in thinking that I was going to just have to "get through" the event and then leave quietly. Turns out it was the best discovery I have ever made. One of the owners, Jonathan, is just an all around good guy who really enjoys having his place and his regulars. It always feels like you are coming into "your place". No fake sophistication, no hype.... just your neighborhood pub with your neighbors who you want to see. The karaoke on Friday is a great time. Walked in once or twice when the place was packed to the gills because they were featuring a local comic or performing artist. They play the games for the fans to enjoy and I am amazed at how many people come with friends dressed with their jerseys and a real desire to have a good time... Haven't seen anyone with a chip on their shoulder in the place and I am beginning to think it is because everyone is comfortable and wants to have a good time... Really nice change from some of the Sports Bars i've been to. The Bartenders are friendly and easy-going... the food... well, they do have pizza and corn dogs.... but I would like to state that this is not a place you are coming to for a sit down meal... this is a place for a sit down draft and the company of some real characters... 'nuff said. The fire pit outside is WONDERFUL. Look... if you want to sit in front of a fire and just chill, there is a lot of planning and work involved... building a fire in your house requires constant vigilence and fire extinguishers... setting up a bonfire requires camping permits, fire safety procedures... it's a lot of work... why not just come to the Regal and buy a beer, sit down and get all of the joy with none of the work? Consider this your "rent a hearth"... and all it costs is time and the price of an ice cold beer... and you wanted the beer anyways.... : ) In short... This place is so new they don't have a full liquor license yet (by September, they say). But they do have plenty of beer on tap, pool tables, darts, and an outdoor patio with a fire pit. So, if you can't figure out how to have a good time here, I can't help you. Bonus points for the bartender who saved us some money. Celebrating his 21st birthday, everyone came around to introduce themselves and give their cheers to my boyfriend. Came here on a SUNDAY night with my boyfriend around 8pm because we didn't want to feel lethargic. This place is in downtown La Mesa and I have to admit, this was a pleasant surprise. It was empty because it was a Sunday night, but definitely a place I would revisit. They serve the typical beers on tap, coronas, coors, etc. Unfortunately, they are limited in the food selection, as they only have pizza. We got the sausage and pepperoni pizza. It was about $2.50 a slice, so not too bad at all. I loved the chill ambiance of the place, and it's always nice to chat with the down to earth locals. The location is great. Places to eat other bars to hit real quick. The music gets better towards night time. The drinks are good and the bartender was cool. If it wasn't for Johnny B's up the street on La Mesa Blvd I never would have discovered this little pocket of fun just a five minute drive from my place. Last year a friend of mine asked me out for a beer at JB's and I've never actually been thru downtown La Mesa save for Octoberfest which I barely remember every year anyway. After eating we wandered down the street walking past all the little restaurants and shops that make downtown La Mesa very cozy and warm when we spotted the word Sports Bar haha. Walking in there was this really nice blond girl (who doesn't work there now) who served us up some cold ones and I fell in love with the joint. This was when Regal bar was only 4 feet wide with one line of stools going down the bar, a bathroom and that's it. A friend of mine who I found out later worked there too filled me in on this big renovation they were going to have. With the new remodel they have done it's even better than I had thought. They have pool, darts, tvs lining the walls with every type of sport to watch from baseball, football, basketball and even MMA. Out back there is a fire hearth and open patio where they have beer pong on Wed nights and the smokers can roam free. Friday nights also see it's fair share of Idol hopefuls as tipsy bar goers ply their voices for karaoke. Stop in for sure and check this place out if you haven't already. Then I walked up and one of the bartenders said if ,"he" my husband, was with me we could leave after our drink due to his attitude. This is what used to be Joe and Andy's. Don't let that fool you though. These guys have spent the money and have really cleaned the place up. EVERYTHING is brand new. Seriously....if you remember J and A's bathroom(s), you will completely appreciate the UPGRADE. Plenty of Beers on tap as well as a healthy selection of wines. Still very moderately priced. Ask for the Shock Top Wheat Beer with Orange. My only criticisms: 1. The bar is still really small. Maybe even smaller than before. They are obviously hoping to expand. 2. No Jukebox. Best bar in La Mesa! Looking at the reviews below it is obvious that they are based off of the attire that the customers are wearing, and not the service that the bar provides! I started going to the Regal bar about a year ago, and my first time in there was a just a mere slice of the amazing experiences that I have had since. There are specials EVERY night, and the bartenders actually care about you. Rather then some other bars where they just want to pour your drink and move on with their shift. Friday and Saturday nights have got to be the best nights! Karaoke on fridays, and a live band on Saturdays bring that extra something special to La Mesa. Ok, so I may be a little bias with this review because I do work here, but this is honestly the best bar I have ever worked at. Before becoming an employee I was a frequent patron and I always enjoyed my time here. There is usually something going on every night of the week. If not a great deal with our happy hour we also host Beer Pong tournaments Monday nights (with cash prizes), Live Trivia on Wednesdays, and Karaoke every Friday. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable, myself included ;-) Jonathan is a great manager. He's friendly and helpful to his employees as well as our patrons. So tonight my brother and I decided to grab a few drinks, listen to some good music, and play pool. When we got there is was pretty quiet, but it got really packed(like 30 people). And this bartender Noah was the best! He's made sure all of the customers were tended to and also that the bar floor was clean and also the bathrooms were super clean and kept up with. Extremely disappointing day at the Regal..... Yesterday, around 3:30pm, my boyfriend was assaulted (hit in the face) by a man while we were watching the Chargers game. This man approached myself and boyfriend, who were sitting in front of the jukebox while the game was playing. He came up to us and rudely said "I'm playing a song"- while we were getting out of our seats to move out of the way for him, my boyfriend asked him "what are you going to play?" (Because the jukebox does not play music during a football game). The man became instantly irate, hostile, and began to yell at us that we had to leave. He then went and got the female bartender from behind the bar, and brought her over to us to tell her that we had to leave. After this, the man began cussing and yelling at my boyfriend, putting his hand into his face, (touching his face) etc. all the while my boyfriend is sitting down. My boyfriend says the the bartender, "He is obviously being very aggressive", and then my boyfriend stood up, expecting this man to try to harm him. Once he stood up, the man assaulted my boyfriend by hitting him in the face, in front of the bartender. Enough people were around to stop the man from further assaulting my boyfriend- who did not land a hit back when attempting to defend himself. The bartender told us that we had to go outside, so we did without question. All the while, the party of the assaulting man began to further harass us and threaten us by telling us we were "In their space". When we went outside, the other party continued their harassment by coming up to us on the back patio!! After all of this, the bartender come to the patio and up to my party, and tells us that WE had to leave. We weren't able to finish our drinks, and I wasn't even allowed to close my bar tab. My roommate had to go back to the bar for me later that day to close my tab for me. Speaking of bar tab- myself and boyfriend each had (2) bud lights. We were practically sober when this assault happened. Meanwhile, I visually witnessed the assaulting man drink (2) Tall Vodka Cranberries, and his party told us they had been there since 11:00am. Leading me to believe he had been drinking since then. This is quite obvious to me, that the party who should have been asked to leave should have been the one who was over served, aggressive, threatening and assaulting other patrons. Not us. However, other patrons told us that this man and his party were "regulars", and the easiest thing to do was to throw us out. INSANE! Throw out a nearly sober couple who had just been assaulted, but let the assaulting man and his party who continued to threaten and harass us stay in the bar??? The bar owners should be ashamed of this incident. I do not blame the female bartender for what happened, because she had NO SUPPORTING STAFF OR SECURITY to help her with this situation. Bar owner responsibility to patrons under the legal doctrine of premises liability: Bar patrons are, legally, invitees. As invitees, patrons have a legal right to remain safe from undue harm and injury while on the bar's premises. This includes not only the bar itself, but the bar's parking lot, alleyways, and all other property the bar sits on. Under the legal doctrine of premises liability, bar owners must do everything reasonably possible to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their patrons. My point being- obviously, during any sporting game, a bar should expect that people will be drinking, there will be disagreements over sports teams, and it is VERY likely that a bar fight can break out. Surely, it's the bar's responsibility to have adequate security working and not just 1 female bartender to run a whole bar filled with wasted people. I am completely outraged over this incident, and being thrown out of a bar after our party was assaulted right in front of the bartender. Bar owners- PLEASE WATCH YOUR CAMERA FOOTAGE FROM SUNDAY 9/25 between 3-4pm where this occurred by the jukebox. This is certainly grounds for the "L" word. read more

The bouncers here were cool, but I go to bars for drinks, not cool bouncers, and our drinks were horrible and inconsistent. We ordered 3 rounds of Sailor and Diets (2 drinks per round). Round 1: my drink was 50/50, my wife's drink was all coke. Round 2: my drink was all coke, my wife's drink tasted like it had a splash of rum in it. Round 3: both drinks all coke... At $7 per drink that's $42 for diet cokes.... Never going back, which is too bad because this bar would make a cool hangout. read more

I always like hitting up downtown La Mesa... it makes me feel like I'm in Back to the Future. This ain't a bad little joint.
