The Rex is where my daughter who works on PAX NAS ended up taking us for dinner after a fun filled day driving around Southern Maryland. We walked in and we're greeted immediately by a friendly and attentive staff. Our waitress, Emily, whom I found out through pleasant banter was the manager, made the experience memorable. I opted for the special and was astonished by the plethora of flavorful experiences making my mouth sing. Steak Del Monico topped with crab, accompanied by asparagus, polenta, and cheese topped waffle fries. Simply put, AWESOME! Washington Street Tacos got rave reviews from the wife and the St Mary's Stuffed Ham was well received and thoroughly consumed. Mac n Cheese with ham and pineapple??? Who comes up with this stuff? We went on a Wednesday night, pretty early. We sat outside and were immediately greeted by the only server. They were quite busy and she seemed stressed. She took our drink order. We both got beer and water. The drinks didn't come out for quite a while, and the server was rushing around. We heard our neighbors griping about the service but she was clearly doing her best. We ordered appetizers, and got the trio of dips. They were a mediocre cream cheese/buffalo dip, good artichoke dip, and a ridiculously garlicky hummus. The hummus was different- basically just roasted garlic- but it was very good. The pita bread it came with was warm and delicious. I got the avocado egg salad BLT for my entree, without bacon (I'm a vegetarian). I got the side of the day which was cauliflower salad. It was excellent. This was an entree that didn't seem incomplete with the meat removed. It was hearty and filling. The bread was perfectly toasted. My husband got the short ribs "on a biscuit" which were actually tacos. Oddly named. They were Asian themed, with slaw and sesame seeds. He really enjoyed them. His side was a small salad with a strange, thick vinaigrette. We also both got dessert. The molten cake was good, not great. The carrot cake came out hot, not sure it was done on purpose though because the frosting was in a puddle on the plate. Weird The waitress really tried her best throughout the meal but she needed help. The owner came around to ask about our meal. He could have made some sort of effort to help out his poor employee. the waitress mentioned there should have been another person helping her (someone called out?). I didn't get water until the very end of the meal, food came out at different times, check was slow to arrive. Something was in my drink - im writing this out of concern for other females in leonardtown. I had a beer which I milked then a cosmo made at the bar and brought to my table from the bartender, I did not leave my drink. Luckily I was with my husband. I dont remember leaving, my husband says I was completely incoherent, extremely confused, and I got sick and passed out. The Rex has a great environment on the Café Side of the restaurant/bar! I had the privilege of visiting on Friday Night and enjoyed the sounds of Dylan Galvin. I had so much fun singing along and dancing that I find myself still thinking about Friday night this week. I hope he is performing at The Rex again soon. We went to the Rex for the first time for my husbands birthday. The atmosphere is pretty cool and the history makes it an interesting spot to eat. They had a live singer there which was great as well. However......the food was terrible! We ordered the fish bites and cheese fries for appetizer. Our dinner meals were shrimp tacos the Duke sandwich with Mac n cheese and two different pizzas. The pizzas were disgusting not even my 8 year old who loves pizza would eat it which is not common at all that boy eats everything!! My sandwhich the Duke was not good I took two bites and was done the Mac and cheese was not too bad but had no seasoning to bring it to life. The cheese fries were ok as long as you dip em in ranch. The only thing that was decent was the fish bites. Stick with the fried food you will be ok. One of the worst tasting meals we have had in a long time will not be returning to this restaurant unfortunately unless they get a new cook! read more

Good place for groups and hanging out. Average for food. We have been here a couple times now. Reviews have been hit or miss on menu choices but the pretzel bun burger was probably best choice. It seems that the less healthy options are better than the salads, etc... The srirachi and maple popcorn was pretty darn good as a munchie. They have several tap beers to choose from and are accommodating to groups. Soon they will have the old theater open for bands and stuff. Staff was pretty good. I really wanted to like this restaurant, as the building is very cool, with garage type doors that open up - however the place ( especially the bathrooms) is dirty, the interior is lit by strings of lights, 27 of them were burnt out, and only 17 lit... As far as service, there was one guy working the whole room ( it wasn't terribly busy but he had 7-8 tables) so service was very slow, almost 15 minutes to get our drinks ( coke and tea) They were out of chicken, and apparently wheat bread as my sandwich came on white, the pizza was passable, but they didn't have any toppings we ordered so we settled for cheese. It took almost 30 minutes for our food to arrive, but everything was hot. read more

The go to place in Leonardtown. Food is creative without being over pretentious. Drinks are great, and the staff is friendly. As a local I can tell you even people who come into town for reservations at other restaurants end up here for a night cap. The restaurant is part of an old theater and has a lot of historical artifacts. To address other reviews, the seating is open, so sit where you want and someone will take care of you. If there is ever a concern grab the bartender as they are likely in charge. read more

Love the vibe. Classic, Chill and perfect for the 20 something crowd. The menu is definitely centered around appetizers (The three dip platter is fantastic!) but they don't do to bad in their entrees. I had the shrimp mac'n'cheese, never had anything quite like it. My fiancee had The REX Burger and loved it. He's a big man and it filled him up. Perfect portions for price. The service is good, not great, but good. I have attended The Rex on several occasions. I have tried several items on the menu and I have always been very pleased with my meal. It's satisfying without being too much. The night life is a lot of fun. I was the DD and they brought me a pitcher of water. Wait staff is always polite and fun. The owner is present and walking around making sure everyone is taken care of. As a life long resident, I was very happy when he bought this old movie theater, he made the decor in honor of the old theater. He also has plans of reviving the theater area. Only 2 down sides, too many high stools. Being short, I hate high stools. If you're in the front bar it gets really cold or hot because the door is constantly opened. If you're in the back, it's the opposite because there is only an emergency exit. read more

So this restaurant is certainly in a great location. On busy nights, parking can be tough. But the menu is always great. The menu rotates, which is nice, but they keep their most popular items. The beer selection is varied and changes a bit seasonally. And there is always popcorn, in keeping with the building's history of being a movie theater. There is outdoor seating as well, which is nice since it is on the town square. Service can be a bit slow, and prices are varied, but overall I like this place very much. Stopped here on our way to Tall Timbers, MD on a whim. Atmosphere is great, loved the outdoor seating. But we waited a long time for the food and it was at best mediocre. Not sure if they were short handed in the kitchen but we were hungry and ordered their fish tacos and make your own pizza. We were told it was the pizza that was holding up the lines. The pizza order was wrong but we didn't care we were so hungry. My fish tacos were not great. I wish they could maybe fry the shrimp and use less inside the tacos. It was like a shrimp soup wrapped inside a soft taco. Too much sauce and guac and sour cream. Would we come back? Probably not, but if we do maybe we can just enjoy some apps and drinks. read more

Such a nice find on Mother's Day. Our waitress Maddie was so sweet and friendly. We were pleasantly surprised with the trio dip appetizer. Bread and pots were so fresh. Sweet and hot dip - i could eat by the spoonful. We both got the burger but customized. Cooked perfect and very yummy. The side salad was so fresh. I would have shared a picture but it was gone before I thought about it. Only regret was we were too full to try dessert. We'll definitely be back. Decided to try this place today for lunch with a friend. Walked in, no one greeted us & I walked over to a girl at the bar & she said sit wherever we wanted. It was somewhat busy but not packed. Took a good 15-20 minutes to order drinks & get menus. We are patient & didn't mind at all. The waitress was EXTREMELY RUDE from jump! Still being patient we blew it off. She finally came back over to take our order & rudely asked "do y'all know what you want to eat!?" We both ordered the steak & cheese, 1 w/out onions with tater tots & 1 regular with onion rings. I asked the waitress if they had pepper relish, she said she didn't know. Food comes out in a timely manner but wrong. Mine had fries instead of onion rings & no onions on my sub. My friends had onions & she ordered none along with A LONG STRAND OF BLACK HAIR across her plate that obviously belonged to the waitress. My friend took her plate to the bar & told bartender about it & decided not to eat at all. I asked again about pepper relish, her reply was "I TOLD YOU & the ANSWER IS NO!" I asked about my onion rings & she brings those out irritably & says DO YOU STILL WANT THESE!? By now we are just ready to leave. I asked for the check & still tried to charge for my friends food. I told her the bill was wrong & she wanted to argue saying it wasn't. I got a box for my food. She kept making rude sarcastic comments every time she walked by us & even on purpose brushed up against my friend walking by. For the 1st time in my life I did NOT tip. She missed out on a good one too. We will NOT be back & I give 0 stars! Hopefully the bartender told the manager about our experience like he said he would when he came in. Is it possible to leave zero stars? We had the worst experience last night at the Rex. I never write reviews but felt the need on this one. The Rex took our reservation in the afternoon for an outside table at 6pm. We got there and our table was ready. The good experiences stopped there. It took over 10 mins to get acknowledged by a server, even though many walked by and served neighboring tables. Once we placed our drink order (without menus because those had yet to brought) it took another 20 mins to receive our drinks. During this time, we placed our order and just sat. Then our drinks came (yay!) but they were awful. My husbands beer tasted watered down and my "sangria" was basically white wine, sprite and lots of ice. 30 mins later our food arrived, staggered, with the kids meal coming out last (at least 5 mins after everything else). My husbands chicken sandwich looked and tasted like 3 day old store bought rotisserie chicken. It was so dry it was hard and inedible. My "pizza" was naan bread with slightly melted cheese, and canned veggies. The only meal the looked ok was our child's chicken tenders and fries, likely because they simply had to fry frozen food. As my husband said as we walked out (still hungry and discussing how a frozen pizza at home would've been more satisfying) it would have been easier to just light $80 on fire. We could've saved ourselves the aggravation. We will never be back to the Rex and would never recommend. read more

I've eaten at The Rex and had take out from here many times since they first opened. I've always been pretty happy with the food and for the most part happy with the service. Every so often, with take out, I will get a not so pleasant employee, but I let it go because I know it can get busy at the bar. Last weekend I had an all around bad experience with take out though. If this was my first experience with The Rex, I would have rated it a 1. When I called to make my order, I spoke with someone at the bar. I asked for the Cobb Wedge Salad. The employee informed me that if I was looking at the online menu, that salad has changed. That's fine, so I ask what is in it now. Instead of telling me what's in it, the employee mentioned a sandwich that has everything onto that the salad now has. I told them that I don't know what's on that sandwich, they again, with an attitude, mentioned the sandwich but didn't tell me what specifically is on it. I said, "I don't know what's on the sandwich, I've never had it, could you tell me what is in the salad?" Finally I got a list of what is in the salad. I decided not to go with that salad and instead ordered the House Salad with chicken. This salad was $13 and not worth a penny of it in my opinion. I looked at it when I got home and I was very disappointed. Usually the portion sizes at The Rex are pretty decent but this salad looked like a side salad. It also mentioned on the menu that the house salad comes with croutons, this salad did not. For reference, I posted a couple photos of the salad. The size and taste definitely weren't worth $13. It was hard giving this place one star. My girlfriend and I stopped to have lunch today. It was a nice day so we sat outside. We ordered and shared a salad and a pizza, which was terrible. Our waitress brought us a jar of parmesan cheese sat it on the table only to see a roach running around on the inside. The waitress was also disgusted when she saw it, she said she didn't know what to do but would talk with the owner Joe and get back with us. she returned with the bill and offered us 10% off the bill! Wait we had a real live running around ROACH in our food and all you can do is give us 10% off!Roaches are not what I want to see when eating at a restaurant, but then I guess its ok if it's considered a bar!! read more

Really casual and yummy. I had the turkey on a ciabatta and asked to have the cilantro aioli sauce substituted with the chiplote bbq sauce instead. Not a problem-- as I am one of those people who can't stand cilantro. The side if the day was fresh deviled eggs--amazing. My husband & I ate here on Sunday. They were not that busy. We ordered a drink, our waitress had no idea what a whiskey - 7 was. Told me they only had ginger ale, no 7 up! I asked to see a drink menu & saw several drinks with Sprite in them!!! She asked another waitress to wait on us & acted very irritated. I asked the new waitress what the Quiche of the day was. After about 10 minutes she came back to take our order, I asked again about the Quiche of the day, she had forgotten to check! Another waitress (& I think she was the manager came over to ask if we wanted to place our order, again I asked about the Quiche & was told right away they were out! I did order the whiskey & Sprite, it was good. I ordered the chicken tacos & asked before ordering if they were spicy (I have a very sensitive stomach & Can NOT eat spicy foods!!!) she stated no they are not spicy at all. Well, my tacos were very spicy, from seasoning! I could hardly eat them but put some ranch salad dressing on them to try to calm down the spice. I have been paying the price since Sunday for eating the spicy chicken tacos. I didn't like the 1st waitresses attitude (like she had a chip on her shoulder about something or just totally irritated) for that reason & the type of service we received & the lack of knowledge about their food we will not be going back! read more

Came in for dinner around 6pm and the place was pretty dark. Not a lot of lighting. Everyone at the table enjoyed their food for the most part. My wife ordered the meatloaf sandwich special and had to send it back because of the feta cheese (she's pregnant and can't have it) but, the waitress did take the sandwich off the bill which was awesome. I ordered the Fenwick sandwich. It was awesome! The Quiche was a little over cooked. Never seen it they way these guys do it. It came out almost like a muffin type look, used to having it sliced like pie. Sister said it was decent once she got pass the over cooked part. House salad with the house vingerette was good. It looks likes the dressing was broken. It came out a little chunky but tasted good. Wait staff wasn't very outgoing but was good at keeping up with refills and checking in on the table.
