Fried Gai, mango sticky rice, and thai tea
    Suzzy L.

I first discovered The Rice Gai back in October after seeing someone post about the food on Instagram. I'm not from the area, so it's always exciting to find a local favorite that truly delivers. Greg has always been kind and responsive when it comes to placing pre-orders, and now that The Rice Gai has a regular local pick-up location (tucked right behind Heirloom Pizza in Salinas), it's even more convenient to enjoy. The fried gai is consistently crispy and juicy, never oily. The mango sticky rice is the best I've ever had, and the Thai tea is rich, creamy, and perfectly sweet. The spicy sauce pairs beautifully with the chicken and adds just the right amount of heat. You can tell Greg genuinely cares about the food he's putting out and wants every customer to feel like their meal was made just for them. If you haven't tried The Rice Gai yet, you're truly missing out.

The Rice Gai serving up yummy chicken and rice! You can have the OG Khao mun gai (poached) or Khao mun gai tod (fried). Love supporting local business, especially ones bringing OG Thai street food to Salinas!

    The Poached Gai

If you haven't tried The Rice Gai yet, you're missing out! Greg is the man behind it all, and you can tell he puts a lot of care into everything he makes. The menu is simple but solid -- Khao Mun Gai (poached chicken), Fried Gai (crispy fried chicken), and Braised Pork. Each is served with garlic rice, broccoli, cucumbers, and his signature sauces that bring everything together. The food is super tasty, affordable, and is healthier than a lot of takeout options. Perfect for meal prepping or just grabbing something delicious that won't leave you feeling heavy after. I've ordered multiple times and always enjoy it. Greg is also a great guy, he genuinely cares about customer satisfaction and takes pride in what he serves. Don't skip the Thai tea and the green tea cheesecake either -- both are excellent.

Greg is the nicest guy and our whole family is so happy to support his business because the food is THAT good! Everything on the plate is just delicious and we'll forever be repeat customers.

Alright this is an honest review on @thericegai Again I'm being honest here, and to many considered personal preference. Location - With my experience l walked in from the back door in the parking lot next to casa serenos. Not the best location for a hole in the wall but not bad enough to ruin my experience. It's just a tight lot that offers minimal parking space. Packing and customer service - l ordered directly from the owner. I was quick to let him know it was my first time, and didn't know about the menu. Although he greeted me kindly, he wasn't very interactive with his customers, perhaps he deals with a regular clientele. Either way l personally feel like he could make his customers experience u little more special, like telling me more about his menu items sides, specials, and sweets. After all considering how much he's put into his marketing, you'd figure he'd like new customers to be fully informed on his menu. As a small business owner myself, I love to explain my menu in its entirety so my customer knows how many options he or she has. I also wasn't offered any sauce I guess it's only given upon request. That's fine. l didn't receive any napkins and wasn't asked if I needed any. Just basic accommodations to make your customer feel valued. Also Just shows their level of commitment to the customer. Food review - The food was seasoned very great!! The chicken was delicious although very dry. He used boneless chicken thigh which is naturally a juicy piece of meat. I was surprised and disappointed. Like I said the seasoning was on point. The garlic rice was fluffy and perfectly cooked. Yet a little bland. The garlic was delicious. Also pet peeve I would like the broccolini to be manicured better. It was mostly stalks and leaf. The sesame egg was delicious. Perfectly gooey center, no complaints there. The sauces were grainy and very very sweet. The spicy was better then the sweet. Also portion sizes too me didn't seem worth it for $18 especially considering chicken is one of the most affordable meats. Perhaps I should have ordered off DoorDash. But I just wanted to full RiceGai experience. See what him and his service has to offer. Conclusion - Over all l'd have to say for $18 this plate was very over hyped. Ofcourse I understand it's low cal food with a simple palatable menu. Either way. Still worth a try if your trying to watch your calorie intake or don't care much for over all quality 6 outta 10 Could recommend. I'll be back to try the matcha cheese cake. His sweet rice and cheesecakes do look extremely delicious.!!!!

9.5/10 Absolutely…read moreamazing, hands down the best Thai food in Salinas! We ordered the Pad Thai, Panang Curry, and Nam Sai, and every dish hit in its own way. Starting with the Pad Thai, we ordered it with beef and it was easily the star of the meal. Perfectly cooked soft noodles with a savory, slightly sweet sauce that was incredibly well balanced. The beef was tender and flavorful, and the addition of diced nuts added a great crunch and texture that tied everything together beautifully. The Panang Curry was also excellent. Rich, creamy, and full of flavor. It came with chicken, green beans, and bell peppers, all of which tasted fresh and perfectly cooked with a nice bite. The curry sauce was smooth and comforting, soaking into the dish incredibly well. A must-order for curry lovers. Lastly, the Nam Sai reminded us a lot of pho. On its own, it was a bit light and lacked salt, but once we added our own seasonings, it really came alive. After adjusting it to taste, it was delicious, comforting, and perfect for warming up. Service was fast and efficient, and the restaurant was clean and well kept. The ambiance was beautiful. A very nice, welcoming spot to enjoy a meal.

We were sat quickly and given menus, but took our waiter quite some time to come get orders which included drinks/order together. I was in the mood for soup and had their Tom Kha a few times so originally thought about ordering that, but decided to try their Tiew Tom Yum. Mistake. My guy ordered the pork Pad Thai, and we also shared a Thai fried rice. We ordered tea, but the waiter forgot the sugar caddy we requested and didnt see him until the food arrived about 20 or so minutes later. We had some requests for side items, etc and he brought everything immediately, but didnt come back to check on us until quite some time where I had almost decided my fate of struggling through my horrible soup. It was the most sour of sour soups I've ever had. Neither one of liked it. When the waiter came around and asked about our meals expressed how much I didn't care for it, and the sour was off putting. He offered the coconut soup, which I believed was Tom Kha. When the soup was dropped off I asked for a to go container as we were done with the rest of our meals almost at that point. Again, that soup came out with an overwhelming sour flavor. Thankfully the Thai rice was delicious, so I ate the rest of that. We didnt see our server again until we were standing up ready to walk up to the front as he was the only server running around, and had one table in the place. I brought up the fact that that soup did not taste like Tom Kha, was it a different version of coconut soup? He asked the cook and she said was the same as Tom Kha. At this point we were tired and decided to go, deciding not to come back for soup ever again. Possibly, not to return in general as were irritated. Our server wasn't horrible, was very polite and was running around, however as so many servers tend to do had a one track mind only focusing on one table at a time instead of circulating his section. As a patron I don't feel like you should ever wait so long to get the check and cash out or not be checked in on more frequently.

He also would crack jokes with customers, and I appreciate that. The restaurant is located where the old fish house was next to CVS on the south side. We got the Thai spicy cauliflower, chicken wings, Tom Kah Gai soup, and Thai house fried rice. Let me just say: everything was delicious! The soup knocked it out of the park for me while my husband fully enjoyed the chicken wings. Everything had great flavor! I highly recommend this place if you never been or on the fence of going. Ordered pho, shaking beef, banh xeo, and others that I could not remember. Their pho was good, big portion and full of meat. Unfortunately the sirloin was overcooked and the other parts of the meat have too much fats in them, so it was down on the score. Their shaking beef was also meh, very thin and overly sweet, probably not their strongest dish. Banh xeo was full of meat and fillings, but not particularly crispy. All in all, it was tasty but only lacking a bit here and there. Their service was pretty good though. Their restaurants are also huge, which is a plus.

From the moment I walked in, the service began with a bad start. The staff were chatting and joking behind the counter and too distracted to notice me. I had to grab a menu myself and ask in a loud tone if I could sit anywhere just to get their attention. Once seated, it took nearly 10 minutes for a server to come by. I ordered a boba drink and pho with brisket. The server returned after another 8 minutes to say they were out of both the boba flavor I wanted and the brisket. After I reordered, the replacement boba arrived extremely sweet -- basically tasted like watered-down sugar syrup with almost no tea flavor. The pho was even more disappointing.. the broth was watery and bland, there was very little beef, and the bowl was light on noodles and toppings. It felt like a shadow of what they used to serve. It's sad to see a spot that was once one of the best pho places in Salinas (in my opinion) decline this sharply. The restaurant was unusually empty, and the few other customers looked just as unimpressed. I understand rising food and restaurant operating costs, but cutting quality this much will only drive more people away. I rarely leave negative reviews and I don't consider myself to be such a picky eater, but this experience was genuinely disappointing. I'm not sure I'll be back.

Starting with the yellow curry, this was one of the best dishes we ordered along with the soup! The curry had great flavor from the cumin and turmeric curry paste, and came with potatoes, carrots, yellow onions, and chicken. The sauce was rich, flavorful, and perfect with a side of rice to soak everything up. Portion size was generous enough to share as well. The only downside was that the chicken was unfortunately a bit dry. The BBQ beef was the biggest disappointment in my opinion. The beef was marinated with lemongrass and black pepper and had a nice grilled flavor, but the meat itself was very dry and not worth ordering again. The pad Thai was decent overall. It came with Thai rice noodles, stir-fried eggs, bean sprouts, onions, and sauce, and we ordered it with steak. The flavor was almost there and still enjoyable, but the dish leaned on the dry side which held it back a bit. Service was attentive and friendly throughout the meal. The ambiance was clean, quiet, and peaceful, exactly the relaxing atmosphere you would expect from a Thai restaurant.
