Holy, OH. I love this bar. The ambiance is extremely cozy, and the bartenders are ridiculously hot. Don't worry, Juan, the dishwasher, you make the cut too. You're hot in a chipotle counter boy kind of way. They have a nice patio out back, which would probably be best suited not in the middle of November. The reason why I love this place so much is that, their old fashioned is the most amazing old fashioned I've ever tasted. And it is STIFF. I remember telling my buddies that I felt sober still.. And then I got up. And then I started talking to some homeless man on the subway. And then I started screaming, at random people saying "HEY, isn't this the longest walk you've ever had EVER in your entire life?!". Nothing but good nights here, nothing. Now, a word of caution my rating is based off of the wait staff not the quality. I came here with my girlfriend for drinks and a light bite. The drinks were nice, well balanced + the cheese & hummus plate was yummy. Now for the wait staff... It was a cold NYC night and we were sitting near the door. The front door kept being accidentally propped open by other patrons, so I would get up and close the door (as we were cold). After this happened about 4 times, the waiter came up and rudely told me to stop closing the door because other people are hot. Then he continued to bitch at me even after my girlfriend offered for us to move. Now, I work in restaurants and for anyone who has worked in restaurants they should know better than to approach a customer and bitch them out. If he had come up to me and said "mam other people in the restaurant are hot could we have you move further from the door.... yada yada" that would have been a different story. But this awful service left a nasty taste in my mouth. I like that the Richardson is a beautiful space but has a laid back neighborhood bar feel to it. I like that it is big enough that when it inevitably catches on fully, that there will be enough room for everyone. I like that Joel and Jeff are totally fantastic bartenders and really nice guys. I like that the crowd consists of mature, attractive hipsters, not the obnoxious, just graduated from college and moved to Williamsburg kind. I like the cocktails (that are priced reasonably at $9) and I especially like that when I knocked mine over - accidentally not drunkenly- that Jeff made me a new one on the house. We went to the Richardson specifically for outdoor seating, under the mistaken impression they had a backyard/ courtyard set up. We arrived and saw some tables on the sidewalk, no one at them, and reconsidered. We walked inside and only two people were there, and I thought, OK, holiday weekend, this place is dead, let's go. I'm so glad we stayed. The bartenders were so friendly and knowledgeable. I don't even know what I drank. I just described what I was in the mood for and something delicious arrived. The food was delicious. For $10, you get a sandwich, a good-sized salad and two deviled eggs. I egged out with sliced eggs, hummus and harissa, and John got what he said might've been the best ham and cheese of his life on raisin bread. The decor is beautiful and the other patrons (who began to filter in as we ate) were a friendly, fun crew. I was wearing my most comfy T-shirt, from New Orleans, which led to a long conversation with some regulars who love NOLA, then trading emails ... My top pick bar in Brooklyn! The house barrel whiskey is Kentucky's Buffalo Trace. Order this and enjoy it as you listen to sweet jazz tunes. Extensive whiskey & scotch menu AND there's food. I haven't tried any yet but would like to give a sandwich there a whirl (particularly the one w hummus & hard-boiled eggs). Everytime I'm here I feel like I'm transported to another time, and I like being transported (or it could be a result of the whiskey or scotch). On a recent night at The Richardson, a guy yelled over my shoulder "Gimme a PBR." The bartender politely told him that they didn't serve PBR. Response? "Alright, gimme whatever's cheap." Hey, guess what? Looks like you took a wrong turn. Daddy's is up the street. This bar is my favorite bar in New York. As a neighborhood bar, it's top notch. And, coming from far away, as I make my friends from above 110th Street do, it is a supreme destination spot. Not only are the drinks delicious and varied, but it's got the best bar food I've ever had. I hate to even call it bar food. Meat and cheese plates better than any restaurant I've been to, tangy white bean toasts, prosciutto and fig jam pressed sandwiches... Are you kidding me? One word: Tartuffo. Drinks: They have the old favorites on the menu - Manhattans, to die for Old Fashioneds, Aviations, etc. But they also have inventive and smart cocktails. The Sasparilla - a red wine and ginger beer combo will satisfy your need for something a little more exciting than a glass of Pinot. The Stone's Throw - I won't even both explaining it. Just order it. I love going in at the cusp of a new season, to see what exciting cocktails they'll come up with. FALL IS COMING. Get ready, ladies and gents. Ok ok ok ok, we were here at some strange wee hour on a Tuesday about 10 seconds before the kitchen closed when there were about 3 other people there, so this is a non-peak-hours review, and I'm not sure if I would've been as charmed and dazzled if I was elbow to elbow with 50 unwashed twats in ironic hats and ballhugging girl-pants. That said, I'd be cool if this was the only bar I could ever go to ever. Yes, it's definitely not cheap and it's definitely on the fancy schmancy side of things, BUT! it also reminds me of that bar in the Shining, and the disarming friendliness of the staff and cockpunchingly amazing deliciousness of the food sort of canceled out the pretension factor for me. No, before we go any further, let's just talk about how they make a fancy-ass grilled cheese that has pickles on it, and this makes me completely willing to join whatever cult they want me to because I've been putting pickles on my grilled cheese since I was about 4 and finally I have met my elegant sandwich destiny. In conclusion, this is the only place to go when it's crazy late on a Tuesday night and you want to feel like a fancy grownup and have a magic sandwich with nice people. read more

"Tasteful" is the word I would use to describe this place. That doesn't necessarily mean expensive either. This place is thought out down to the bartender's hair! Beautiful, probably the coolest bar I've ever visited. Dark, candles all over, very comfortable. Beautiful wooden floor, chairs and bar. Architecturally, if busy the place supports conversation, flow and mingling. If I were to ever design my own bar, I would do it something like the Richardson. I think the only thing that could make it better is carefully chosen, great art for the walls. Just to be sure though, I wouldn't change a thing. read more

Without explaining everything, I just want to start this review by saying that I had no where to go on Christmas eve -- except The Richardson, which was open until 4am with snacks, martinis, and lots of Christmas love & affection. Joey, my bartender for the evening, served me up too-many-to-count Hendrick's martinis, one after the next, until I forgot what day it was (it was Christmas by that point, I'm sure). Each one was quite perfect, with the right twists (cucumber once, lemon next, maybe an olive for good spirit the third time around) and the right attitude. I'm lucky to live down the block from this place. I just wish they had more seating -- Fridays and Saturdays tend to be overwhelmingly hectic, and usually with standing room only. Can't deduct a full star for that tinyissue, though. read more

The bar captures the glamour and classiness of the 1920s perfectly. Dark wood panelling and low light help to create an intimate atmosphere, while the outside seating area has the feel of being at a sidewalk cafe in Europe. The assortment of drinks is fantastic- tried the Scottish Dew, which had muddled cucumbers, bitters, and a heavy pour of whiskey. Emphasis on "heavy." The bartenders were SO nice and friendly. They answered all our questions about the whiskeys and made sure we were comfortable. I haven't had such lovely service in a long time. I had a birthday gathering at The Richardson and the whole experience went so smoothly, from the initials e-mails with the manager to the super attentive server the night of. They're an extremely accommodating bunch and will make your night stress-free. If you're thinking about hosting a party there, I highly recommend contacting them a few weeks in advance. It's a great, classy space on a quiet strip of East Williamsburg. The drinks are very, very strong. Not all of them were up my alley, but they offer a huge range so everyone in your group will have something to try. I've been wanting to check out the Richardson for some time now. Unfortunately I'm hardly ever in that part of Williamsburg. A friend and I decided to take a trip for a post dinner drink. It was around 9ish on a Saturday night and the place was particularly busy. The decor is cute. Reminiscent of the now typical 20's "speakeasy-ish "look. But for me it was a bit lacking. Felt they could have done more with the space, but I guess they wanted to keep the space a bit open for crowds. I started the night with a Manhattan, and it was surprisingly stronger than I'm sued to. Same with the Sazerac I ordered afterwards. Normally I wouldn't mind potent drinks, but when i go to a cocktail bar I go for the taste of the drink rather than the strength. Two classic cocktails sub-par. Granted the prices aren't so bad, but there are plenty of places that can give me a well done cocktail for the same price in the neighborhood. I've read good things about the food so I want to give them another chance. Hopefully my drinks will taste better next time. read more

Went here last night to celebrate after putting down a deposit on an apartment around the corner. I can see this becoming the type of place that I will bring friends to when I show off the new apartment and neighborhood. I had the HB lager, which was crisp and delicious; my boyfriend had the wheat beer, which was also very good. Graham Avenue is, from time to time, the home of yours truly's one and only bar crawl. Get off the L train at the corner of Metropolitan Avenue, and it's a straight shot down the road to the three of the best waterin' holes in all a' Brooklyn: Mother's, Daddy's, and, just before you toss your cookies under the BQE, The Richardson. The new-ish Richardson is part of what I'd call--if I was a total douchebag, that is--the "Neo-Speakeasy" craze. Along with Death & Co. in Manhattan, Weather Up in Prospect Heights and Rye in Williamsburg, these Upscale Establishments serve up Old-Timey Style Cocktails in Plenty Classy Surroundings. There are Trained Mixologist Types in Anachronistic Duds behind what is almost invariably a big wood bar adorned with lotsa details and tchotchkes, and usually at least a small menu's worth of Quaint Small Plates 'specially designed to complement the Prohibition Style Alchemy at hand. Amazingly, none of these dire affectations make The Richardson unbearable--far from it, in fact. The place is film-noir handsome, dark and spacious--almost embarrassingly so, considering what rents used to be in this area not long ago--so there's usually plenty of room to belly up to the bar or grab a seat at one of the tables, where on busier nights you'll have the option of table service. (All of this makes it a great place to take a date, friends, especially Sun. through Wednesday.) And...oh yeah, the booze: while not particularly cheap--a long night for two can easily run you $80-$100--is first rate, whether wine by the glass, beer, scotch, or one of their house specialty cocktails. (The last of which are ostensibly the main attraction; while I can indeed vouch for their excellence, I usually opt for a glass of red or a properly poured Guinness.) The bartenders are generally terrific to boot, and have a solid knack for knowing when to offer another round, or just hang back and let you catch your breath, and The Richardson's iPod is definitely one of the best in the city. (I don't think I've ever heard anything less than terrific stuff--at the right volume, no less--every time I've been there. Think greezy, off the beaten bath '40s and '50s R&B, Hank Williams, obscure jump blues, and other suitable songs for alcoholics.) The chow is pretty tasty, too. This place is trying way to hard. I get they want to have a speak easy feel, but it feels so forced. The folks who hangout here aren't wearing flapper dresses and suits, why not change up the tunes a bit after everyone has spent $400 dollars to get a hint of a buzz? The bartender was really cool and the only saving grace as the blonde Harry potter looking waiter was a grade-a butthole and the waitress seemed to waiting on the whole place as every time I ordered a drink from her it took nearly 40 minutes to get it, forcing me to open another tab at the bar. I am surprised the waiter has a job there, it's clear he hates working in customer service, to the point I heard him talking rudely to customers. He should probably go ahead and get a job as an office tech dude were he can be justifiably annoyed at people's stupidity, but you work in a bar kid, people drink there and are trying to have a good time. Shouting "what?!?" and bucking your chest out at a (female) customer is poor form. I'm fairly certain I only heard her complain about the music, totally not the right way to handle that situation. I certainly won't go back unless forced. The cocktails were delish, but everything else from music to decor to table service was so unbelievably bad. In this far flung corner of WillyB where the newly transplanted rarely tread, sits another drinking house of worship. Here, speakeasies are legion, at least in style. So walking into The Richardson, I was not terribly surprised to find an upscale bar, brilliantly designed, with dark wood tones everywhere, and bottles of water served in highball glasses with your drink. The bartender was a portly cheery sort of fellow, perhaps smiling too much because he has such a nice job. Flanked at one end of the bar by two lovely ladies more interested in chitchatting with him than with each other. And all along the front, friendly faces eager for cocktails or beer, but not pissy and obnoxious by any stretch. My friend ordered a La Castenada and I a Monti Sibillini Negroni. You know gin is coming back in style, or haven't you heard? While we waited for our drinks, I talked about the author Castenada, and his famous book The Teachings of Don Juan. Critics of his works have claimed that they were not real-life accounts, nor anthropological in nature. Since his death he has seen a resurgence of popularity, so perhaps that explains the drink. Though you'll probably have to drink more than one of these to find yourself walking with Castenada 10 feet above the ground, I do like the atmosphere, and there are plenty of dark corners for your drinking and kissing merriment. read more

I don't know what people are talking about when they complain about the atmosphere or the service here. I've sat at both the bar and a table, and both the bartenders and waiters/waitresses have been nothing but friendly and attentive. When my friend was 20 minutes late in meeting me, the bartender chatted a bit (but not to the point of being annoying) and made sure I had everything I needed (including repeated refills on my water while I waited for my bud to show up--without me even asking). The drink menu is extensive and interesting. The classic cocktails are...well, classic...not to mention well-made. And the house and seasonal choices are innovative and yummy. They're a little hit-or-miss, but I really think that just depends on your personal taste. There's a good wine, beer, and whiskey selection for those who don't want to shell out $11 for a small cocktail. The food choices are really delicious, if a bit overpriced. The prosciutto and fig jam "toast" is fantastic. The caprese salad, while fine, is not worth the money ($7 for two average-sized tomato slices and mozzarella slices?). Your best bet is a cheese plate, because the hunks of cheese they give you are HUGE!! Each piece is practically the size of a supermarket wedge, and it comes with plenty of toasted bread (in different flavors, no less), plus little accompaniments like fruit and olives. I find that cheese plates in bars are usually way pricey for the amount you get, but the 3-cheese plate at The Richardson is practically a meal for two. And make sure one of your choices is the Cabot Clothbound Aged Cheddar. It is the sharpest, tangiest, crumbliest, literally most delicious Cheddar I've ever had, and I've never seen it for sale anywhere else (maybe in Vermont?). read more

Decided to spend NYE here and was happy to discover that you can reserve a table for free on their website (just email them). It was so easy and everyone was so nice setting up a table. I took the last possible reservation, 9:30 pm, for 10 people. They sat us right in the middle of the place, which was awesome. They decorated with shiny stars and the waitstaff was helpful. Our waitress for the night was really nice and recommended good drinks for our table. I enjoyed this delicious honey cocktail, not sure of the name, but it was fabulous. I had about 3 of them (hey its NYE don't judge me). We played card games at our table and celebrated NYE in style. The music was fun and lots of people were dancing. Overall, it was a very laid back bar with great drinks, fun decor and an excellent vibe. I really love The Richardson. I had been here before, but I never quite realized just how brilliant the cocktails are in this place. It's an oasis of culture in the quasi-industrial wasteland that this neighborhood is. I highly recommend the Autumn Equinox, and highly recommend that you stay away from the Black Hand (unless you like drinking cough syrupy drinks). It is very comforting to see The Richardson pop up fairly recently among some of the other dingy Brooklyn dives. The owner Joel is a super nice guy with great taste; everything in and about this place is a depiction of that. The cocktails are the obvious choice here, expertly mixed, stiff with marinated cherries, ripe olives, and perfect proportions. They have an amazing beer selection, but the vintage decor and beautiful people that occupy this space force the classier beverages into your hand. It is very fairly priced, I might even call it inexpensive relative to what you would pay in Manhattan for similar mixing artistry and lush atmosphere: $9 house cocktails and $5 pints. The small plates of food are just as delicious as the beverages and are perfect light compliments to any cocktail, or beer. I would say this space is perfect for a couple, or a small group. The majority of the patrons sit down and have conversation. Not a rowdy bar vibe. If you come alone on a late evening on the weekend there won't be anybody really to chat with as most people are with their special someone, or friends. It is best to come alone in the early evening, or a Sunday afternoon when the atmosphere fosters more casual conversation with strangers. read more

Stellar! Amazing cocktails. I've tried about 80% of the cocktails they make (several of them multiple times), and they're simply always good. Most of the cocktails are pretty substantial, too. I'm a huge whiskey/scotch guy, and there are many tasty cocktails that incorporate these liquors. They also have a great and reasonably-priced beer selection, and great ambiance. The only complaint I could possibly have about this place is actually a good thing on certain nights: it's almost always hoppin' with people (sans Monday nights and occasionally Tuesday and Wednesday nights). This place is the cat's meow. Why the throwback compliment, you ponder? It's high praise for this throwback of a place. The whole vibe is from another era ... or eras really, dishing out Old-Fashioned's, vintage interiors, anachronistic-yet-still-hipsterish bartender. It's a mix of old-timey things, and it all seems to work, though I am basing this assessment after having more than a couple of their perfect cocktails. It was midday on a Saturday when we popped in, and the whole bar had patrons sitting it at. The bartender was super smiley and friendly and handled the complex drinks and slightly-demanding crowd with aplomb. He was loving his job, which is always nice to see. This place is not without its lil' challenges. The cocktail menu is so elaborate that it can't help but take the one bartender time to whip them up (so prepare to wait if your goal is only to get your drink on), and the lighting appears to be near-non-existent in any area other than the bar (again, this was midday, the sun was out, but it only lit up so much, the table we sat at was in darkness). Everyone has described the decor here well - this bar is gorgeous. It makes me wish I dressed better and smoked cigarettes. The first time I came here was with a guy I had been hanging out with. He knew it was the type of place that a girl like me would enjoy. The drinks here are very strong so we actually shared whatever it was I ordered because he drove that night. We sat in a corner sipping our drink and eventually I was rather drunk. When we decided to leave he had his arm around me, probably to make sure I would walk straight. That night was the first time we kissed. Nothing more, because I am a lady worthy of classy places like the Richardson. The last time I came here I was with the same guy, by this time my ex. He had a beer and I had a Jack Rose. Once again I was fairly drunk from just one cocktail. One very delicious cocktail. I eventually finished my Jack Rose, and my ex had finished his beer a while before that. We weren't all cozy in a dark corner like the first time, but we were enjoying ourselves. After we left we walked back to his car to go home. This time we didn't just kiss. I really love the Richardson - it's a great place with great drinks. My only thing against it is apparently after just one of their drinks I cannot control my behavior. Next time I'll have to try some of their food and maybe that'll help. Perhaps I was just a bit too harsh with my last review of the Richardson. That's not to say that it's not still extremely loud and crowded on a Friday or Saturday night and the drinks are still pretty expensive. But! If you go here on any other night or earlier in the day, this place can truly be a pleasant and delightful experience. Also, I've since discovered that some of the food on their menu is to die for and also reasonably priced (especially in comparison to their drinks!). Especially the tuna sandwich.
