Good vibes but it took about 25 min to get our first round of drinks. Tuna nachos were ok 2/10. Tuna itself wasn't the best. Truffle fries 8/10. Hummus 2/10, for some reason it had onions in it. Carrot cake was 10/10! Overall it was cool for a one time experience. I would never go back. Nothing special about this place. Oh also, asked to get the heaters turned on and they took about 30 min. They turned them on as we paid for our check. Just go somewhere else. read more

I'm so happy Above Ash Social has stayed open for service during these hard times (mask and social-distancing required, of course)! It was such a treat to enjoy a night out with gorgeous views of the sun setting over the San Diego Bay, and delicious margaritas and palomas in hand. It was very refreshing to receive such exemplary service from Kiko and Jhezzie. They treated me and my friend like family, and they had great suggestions on tasting tequilas. Although currently more spread out, it was a nice (but safe) turn out, and the music was perfect to enhance the classy, chill vibe. I highly recommend trying their happy hour and taco Tuesday too! This is one of the hidden gems in Little Italy. I will definitely keep coming back. read more

This bar is a little difficult to find, you have to buzz the hotel to be let in the lobby. Then take the elevator up all the way to the roof. The ambience is nice on the roof, it was a little chilly after I got dark, and the instrumental-only music was very interesting. The drinks were a bit overpriced for what we got, although we got the french fries off the menu and they were to die for! Since you have to order food anyways, I would always recommend getting the french fries, the chipotle ketchup was worth it! Like I said, I'm giving three stars due to the drinks being very blans for the price. read more

This place is pretty new, so it's a nice rooftop bar to go to that isn't that crowded. The view is amazing, and they have giant TV for games. The bartender today was really attentive & was very helpful. I wish the food menu was expanded, there's not too much to choose from. I've only have the cheesecake so far, and it was really good!! The only thing I was annoyed by is they add tax into your drinks.. I would rather they change the drink price to $15 rather than seeing an extra dollar tacked onto the bill. read more

I had a great experience here! It's located on the rooftop of carte, which gives a great view and a great ambiance. The couch seating is great for a meeting place for appetizers and drinks. I came with a group of 8 and the service was great! Tori was our server and she was very quick to make sure we had everything we needed. She never missed a beat and our drinks were always full! She was very kind and took care of our group through the entire process. We sat on the front balcony which has a great view and a fire pit! The food is also great! Everyone in my party was very happy with our food and drink orders. Overall i have no complaints this place was great! read more

This place is truly a hidden gem. Located at the top of Carte Hotel, it is a coverless bar/lounge with both a large screen for viewing certain games, and also plenty of seating and standing area with great views of the bay, at the level of the star of india ship and the cruise ports, a great sunset as well. Prices are average/good, and the service is fantastic. Parking is normal for downtown, so it might be best to ride share unless you go on a weekday. They close relatively early--8pm at the time of this review, but hopefully will be later soon! I will be back for more. read more

I came here on my birthday for a drink after the Alice experience. Jhezzi was our server and told us it was her birthday yesterday and how hungover she was, saying she was trying not to throw up on us during her shift. There was a total of 6 in our party and we ordered two drinks each our entire stay. Our party put down one credit card to start a tab and when it came time to pay, we paid the tab in all cash and left a generous $100 tip for Jhezzi on a $250 tab. Apparently, a $100 cash tip was not enough for her. The next day we check our credit card used and found out that Jhezzi kept the full $350 cash ($250 for tab plus $100 for tip) for herself, then fake signed our signature on the bill so we were charged $250 on the credit card, even though we paid in cash. Jhezzi also charged us an automatic gratuity tip on the card, for being a party of 6, which came to ($40), even though we just ordered drinks and a bowl of fries. Had we known we would be charged an automatic 6 party gratuity, we would have just sat at the bar. All in all, Jhezzi took $390 ($350 in cash plus automatic gratuity of $40) from us, and faked our signature on the credit card receipt. Mgmt took days to call us back and the GM literally said he "was skeptical of the situation," implying that we made it up. We were instructed by the GM that we should have asked for a receipt showing we paid in cash. He also hung up on us mid phone call when trying to follow up on the refund. I have never went out to a bar or restaurant and asked for a receipt after I paid cash as most respected businesses do not steal from customers, especially who already GENEROUSLY tipped their server. It took over a month of back and forth phone calls with Above Ash and the credit card company, and still when no refund was issued we finally had to file a police report. How funny that the next day we finally received the refund. Management was not apologetic or even acknowledged that they would take action to their employee committing credit fraud on a customer, which makes me believe this probably happens all the time here without customers noticing. It takes a scummy, selfish person to steal that much money from a party who was nothing but nice to you. I am completely blown away that there was no sincere apology given to our party nor independent efforts on the Carte hotel end to make this right, even though they provided us with a copy of the receipt with her fake signature on it! You would think they would acknowledge their staff stealing from customers (especially when they have proof of the fake signature on receipt) and try to make it right on their end without our party having to call continuously and follow up but that was not the case. This incident was absolutely absurd and ridiculous and I can't believe how selfish and scummy Jhezzi was to us. What a great way to end a birthday night! read more

In the span of a few months I've had a few friends visit San Diego and a some of these people decided to stay at the Carte Hotel. As we all know, this means a few drinks at the hotel bar before making a plan - nobody wants to sit in a hotel room. Above Ash Social should be known as a well-kept-secret in San Diego, but then again, it would no longer be a secret at that point. I digress. The views are epic, the staff is fantastic, the drinks aren't crazy expensive, and they have a gigantic TV for watching sports... err... constant Coronavirus/protest news coverage - I fear we're in a terrible TV drought for a while. Long story short, this rooftop bar is great for both tourists and locals, or locals disguised as tourists. So, are you a tourist or a local? Doesn't matter, just don't be an a$$hole. read more

Came here for a birthday gathering over the weekend. We came during happy hour which wasn't too packed and the space was not over crowded. The view is amazing during sunset , which lights on in surrounding building it was a spectacular view. The food was good and drinks were strong with limited happy hours options. Definitely had a great time with friends and is also able to enjoy the multiple tv screen and large led tv playing sport on the patio. EXTREMELY SLOW and TERRIBLE SERVICE ! It took us 1 hour to get 2 drinks and our order of hummus never showed up. The place was practically empty with 4-5 tables filled and it still seemed like an impossible task to get the least of service. After waiting for the hummus more than hour we finally just got up to leave. Turns out we were still charged for it (which they removed after we mentioned it). I wouldn't go back or recommend anyone else to. It's a shame because it is a beautiful rooftop. read more

When my friends and I heard about Above Ash, we were really excited to go! Unfortunately, it did not live up to the hype. Seating was the first issue. There were four in our party when we made our reservation. Unfortunately, one of our group contracted COVID before our night out and therefore could not join us after all. So, there were only three of us. The hostess sat us at a table for two and moved another chair alongside. We ultimately did get moved to another table, but honestly, how did they think a two-top table was going to be ok in the first place? Then it came time to order. Although my friends and I were there for dinner, not drinks at the bar, they asked for and took my credit card to the bar ahead of the meal and held it open for purchases. The food was mediocre. Very high prices for an average meal. It was not bad, but it was not worth the prices we paid. The service, on the other hand, was atrocious. More than once we had to ask for silverware. The first time, we got only forks. The second time, our server reached behind us and tried to move silverware over from a table where guests had just been seated, which had not yet been cleaned/bussed. We had to tell him that was gross and not acceptable. The third time we had to specify a fork AND knife AND spoon, please. Oh, and also plates, please. Only one of us ordered an alcoholic drink, while the rest of us just wanted water. After half an hour the drink still had not arrived. When we inquired about it, instead of just telling us he had forgotten to put in the order, our server said he was going to check on it and we watched as he walked over and keyed the order in to the machine. Now, look, people are human and everyone makes mistakes, right? But don't lie to us about it. There's just no need for that. I mean, I know we've asked for several pieces of - clean - silverware at this point, but we're not jerks. The views are definitely the best part of Above Ash. We stopped in here, for the first time ever, on Mother's Day night, after attending a function next door. The location was great and it was not very busy. It was quite a casual setting with relaxing chairs and couches in the outdoor area. We observed three employees working the floor, not including the manager at that time (more to follow about that). A male server brought us waters. The lone female server took our order about 10 minutes after we sat down, which included drinks for the four of us and some food (charcuterie board). The drinks took about another 15 minutes to get to us, which was odd considering there were only 3 people at the bar itself and 2 other couples on the patio. The charcuterie board came out about 20 minutes after that. The board was okay, but nothing special to talk about. Needless to say our alcoholic beverages were soon consumed, as were the water glasses 30 minutes into it, with the empty glasses piling up. We were never approached after the initial service, although our female server wandered around the adjacent interior bar area and seated another couple in the outdoor patio. This was quite annoying to say the least. Another male employee walked by and stopped and asked how it was going. We informed him we were not being serviced and he identified himself as the manager, apologized and took our order for another round of drinks. I watched as he returned to the bar, pulled our server aside and what appeared to be a chastisement in a professional manner. Shortly thereafter the server brought our drinks and verbally apologized to us for not being more attentive (I give her props for swallowing her pride and doing so, as that was a first for me). About 20 minutes later, the manager approached the two ladies in our group and provided them with a canned cocktail to take home and wishing them a happy Mother's Day. So, initially my review was leaning towards a single star as we were a little peeved about how service (or lack of) had been. However, the manager (I did not get his name) was a 5 star interaction. He was a good manager and I hope the business acknowledges that. I point out that the manager is a tall black male, for no other reason than to let future customers possibly note who it is and pay attention to how he professionally carries out his duties. When in SD we all agreed that we would give this place another shot, because as noted the location and ambience was quite relaxing; and the drink prices were not bad. read more

I was very excited about this place since we were staying at the hotel but the service was disappointing. We went on Friday night 8/27 it was a good amount of people there but not extremely busy. The hostess took us a to a table in the inside never asked if we had a seating preference, we asked if there were any tables outside and was told we can check ourselves if that's the case what do you need a hostess for?! We found a table outside with a nice view our waitress came and we ordered a beer and glass of rosé. Our drinks never came after 10/15min then our waitress came back to ask how everything was and said "oh shoot I forgot your drinks" like are you kidding!!! So we asked if she even put the order in since we had to give a CC for the tab and she insisted they were she just forgot. So we asked for the tab and as we walked over to the bar she never put in the order. She apologized but it was too much at that point. Great view and great ambiance but that's where it ends. It has the potential to be a really nice rooftop bar but definitely needs better management. If you don't want a GIANT T.V. Screen in your face the whole time, this is not the place to go. The food tasted ok but everything they served us was absolutely cold and took a long time. Decided to check this place out because we thought the views would be pretty at sunset. It was not very crowded and the views were gorgeous. Someone was coming around asking for drink orders so we each ordered a cocktail. We waited about half an hour because we were in no rush. The bar did not appear busy at all but our drinks never arrived so we ended up just heading out. I'm sure they would have eventually made our drinks if we went up and reminded them, but we had other things we wanted to go do and were surprised they had forgotten about them since they had approached us and wrote our orders down (and it was not busy or crowded). read more

This is a hidden gem of Little Italy!! You go up to the 16th floor of the beautiful Carte Hotel and enter a spacious and very cozy rooftop lounge and bar. My wife and were sitting by the large fire pit, enjoying exquisite drinks and watching amazing sunset above the San Diego Bay. Views, Views, Views- we wanted to stay there all night watching sail boats in San Diego Bay, and night lights on the hills of Point Loma Little Italy! There is not a place like this anywhere in downtown! We will come back to watch some football games on the giant screen that they have up here as well! read more

I dont know how this place got high ratings. I came yesterday and I ordered a dish with octopus. I had none. I asked the waitress and she said it's under the fish. I waited almost an hour for my food. Just got off work and I was starving. I complained and I told her I'm not waiting another hour for food. I'm hungry. They didn't comp the dish. She said there was a miscommunication and ran out of octopus. I'm like okay so you tell the PAYING customer you ran out. They offered tuna poke nachos for the happy hour price.
