I would love to give this place five stars. Really. It's in an amazing location at one end of Little Italy, the ambience in quite nice. The hotel is very comfortable. It's a Hilton product so I tried it for a week as I'm pretty loyal to the brand. As for the bar, the servers were amazing. The fire pits and HUGE TV's, and private alcoves separated ensures that whatever vibe you were after, you'd have your spot. It's largely undiscovered yet and so no drama trying to get a drink (they aren't giving them away. Seriously high prices). The only two quirks are at 7pm and 10pm. At these hours, the lights come blazing on at full force (some timer issue) and they have to call engineering from the hotel to fix it. The Managment knows the issue, however the owner evidently is the only one who can authorize the stupid dumb fix. If they change that, I'll consider changing my rating. Oh and one more thing... Pepsi. Really...? That's specifically why I don't stay in Marriotts. I get Marriott's decision back in the day to not choose Coca-Cola. They were arrogant and embarrassed the owner of the chain. But the fact is, Coke tastes better. When you're charging that much for a drink, for F¥CK's sake, serve coke products....!!!! read more

I love this place! I feel reluctant to write a good review because I want to keep it to myself. The area itself is beautiful. You can't beat the amazing views and the multiple fire pits. They have blankets if you are cold. The bartenders are super nice. Niko makes the most amazing smoke infused old fashion and hibiscus margarita. Also, huge pluss, they play great tech-house music. This is definitely my new hangout. I haven't tried the food yet, the menu is pretty limited if you don't eat meat or seafood like myself. Regardless, Best bar in little Italy!!! read more

Measured against a very similar Rooftop by STK (at this first glance), Above Ash wins by a wide margin. This is a near-perfect place to bring friends visiting San Diego for a relaxed round of drinks, also a good fit for midscale informal celebration. The ambiance is that of Mister A's balcony with less sweeping views, but much less sun and wind in the afternoon (this place cannot compete with Mister A's on iconicity, of course; it is in a lesser, but more intimate, league). The place is hidden at the top of the Carte hotel; so don't search for the signage (there apparently isn't any), just enter the lobby, turn right to the elevators and proceed to the 16th floor. The place contains four areas: - a open-air balcony with the gorgeous views of the highrises and the bay. Way to sunny for my taste during the day, should be great in the evening with its large fire pit; - a somewhat sheltered area for dining with great city views (sans the bay) provides shade and protection from the elements; - an area for imbibing - great view of highrises, a couple of fire pits, no sun in the afternoon; - a small private area with bay view (and some sun, alas). On Sunday afternoon the place was quite uncrowded. Cocktails were a mixed bunch: Sunset on Ash was terrific, Golden Hour was somewhat disappointing. Music selection can be (and should be) easily improved, the volume was just right - drowning the talks at other tables. but allowing for an easy communication. Regarding the food: the menu looks promising, especially the Shareables section. Will update the review after dining here. read more

Very pretty view. Decorated nicely. Very, very bad service. We came by yesterday for cocktails and app's but after 20 or so minutes had neither. We were one of two tables (the place was empty otherwise) but our server Sunny wasn't really interested in bringing us our drinks or taking our food order. When we left I spoke with a manager who had very little to say and didn't offer to make anything right. It was a bad experience and we def won't be back. Too bad, it's very pretty. Fantastic spot for sunset! It gets chilly up there so their fire pit tables are perfect. There's a massive TV on one end that works well for viewing the big game. I could see it being fun for summer movie nights too. I called ahead with a whopping 5-minute notice and snagged a table for four with its own fire pit and a bottle of Prosecco chilled and waiting. I came here for dinner with some friends on a Tuesday night. I came right before sunset and was able to admire the view. This is located on the rooftop of the Carte hotel. It's a small quaint space to grab drinks after work. I liked the fire pit and would like to sit there next time. The drinks were excellent. A little slow to arrive but I think the place is new and they are getting their routine in and we were in no hurry. I arrived before my friends and I was asked to give a credit card. I didn't have a choice so I gave him mine. The food was delectable. All very small portions but worth the $$. Happy hour is a great time to come to try the shareable plates for a good price. We asked the waiter for the dessert recommendation and he did not disappoint. We got The Chocolate Budino Tart. When the bill came, he charged it all on my card. We normally split or pay cash. That was the only turn off but nothing that could not be amended. We just worked it out among ourselves, but definitely something the should ask before just charging. I'll stop by here again for sure to try more food and sit at the more casual chairs or by the fire pit for a different experience. read more

The rooftop itself is pretty welcoming and nice. It has wonderful views of Little Italy, it's very spacious. The food was disappointing, very expensive and not worth purchasing. I order the ceviche, it was maybe a scoop and it had no flavor at all..the tostada was hard as a rock, for $18.00? Not worth it. Maybe I got the wrong thing? The drinks are also very pricey but okay. They have a lot of potential so I hope they get it right. read more

I had misplaced/lost my phone at the hotel. I backtracked and tried to locate my phone through different areas (rooftop/lobby). Everyone from the hotel (the manager and several employees, I'm sorry I can't recall the names) as well as the residents of the hotel who turned in my phone were extremely helpful in location my phone. I can only continue to show my appreciation through more reviews. The customer service quality is 10/5, very amazing. The quality of service of the rooftop bar is as amazing, the personality of the employees were top notch, really added to our time here. They were really attentive to our comfort since the day was much cooler than usually. read more

We were staying at The Carte Hotel at Christmas time. Went up to this beautiful rooftop bar at 9:00pm on Christmas. They were about to close down so they could spend the evening with their families ( understandable). The bar manager, Kiko, was so very kind and treated four of us to a glass of wine "on the house". He felt bad that we came up there as the hotel stated they would be open until 11:00pm. What an amazing young man who knows how to treat his customers well. Incredible views and a great start to a wonderful weekend with out of state friends. Spent over $800 on food and drinks. Waitress was put out as she couldn't find our reservation. When I showed her the confirmation she dismissed me and said my confirmation didn't matter. That was the start to lousy service. Completely forgot one entree, tried to charge us for the free beer that went with the Smash Burgers. When friends joined us 2 hours later the service continued to get worse until we finally left and took our business elsewhere. Other than the view there would be NOTHING to recommend. I might add that they were not busy and had 4 bartenders working yet it still took 10-15 minutes to receive our drinks. read more

Our experience at Above Ash was a week night, with the venue only being 25% full. The staff we encountered were very unhappy people. The hostess seating us wouldn't even look us in the eyes. She didn't smile or acknowledge us at all. So strange, because I think that's the opposite of a hostess' job. Our waitress had the same demeanor. Each one of us ordered an appetizers. Half of them came to the table. We waited quite a while for the others to come out and when they did the order was wrong. Half of our group needed to leave and didn't get their order. The waitress was told at the beginning that they were on a time line. There was no apology for the mixup and lack of food. A server came and cleared our plates, again, no eye contact, no acknowledgement of us or even asking us if we were finished. The staff acted like they had just been reprimanded for something and they were all ticked off. Not a pleasant evening. The view is wonderful, the roof top patios were very nice and the food that we did receive was very good. If it wasn't for the 'party pooper' staff, that didn't give a rip about presenting well, I could have given it 5 stars. I'd rather seat myself, order off an app and pick my food up at an order window, than deal with poor attitudes from staff that doesn't want to be there. read more

The restaurant was so disrespectful and rude. The short Asian lady that helped us tonight was extremely rude and I think it was because we were the only gay couple there.. She gave us bad looks.. The vibes were not right. I don't know if this restaurant is LGBTQ+ friendly or not.. We felt so uncomfortable and so out of place. She was more concern talking to a couple and chit chatting away for 10-15 minutes each time we wanted to order more food and drinks.. our food took 35 mins and the drinks came out poor and too strong.. Pretty disappointing. We were invited to a happy hour as a member of the gym downstairs and given 2 tickets for free drinks. They were apparently short staffed tonight not sure if thats the fault of the hotel or what but it was pretty awful service. We ordered fries, an item that we thought was on the happy hour menu and went to the bar for our free drinks. We waited for 30 min for the bartender to even look at us, i asked for a drink that he interrupted me to say no to so we got 2 margaritas that were honestly pretty awful. We got the fries but the waiter never checked on us again to ask if we wanted more food or anything and we went to the front to pay and found out the fries were taken off the happy hour menu 2 days ago. There was apparently nothing the waiter could do. Pretty upsetting seeing how the gym members were treated at an event for the gym members. What might have been an introduction to a cool new place to get a drink after the gym is now pretty much stuck in our mind as having awful customer service. So, not sure where to start. Richard, the bartender, was extremely rude. While the manager, Ian, was phenomenal. What happened was we came in after some walking and exploring SD, so we weren't "dressed to impress". When my friend ordered shots of Hennessy, Richard informed my friend in a derogatory tone "you know these are expensive", assuming we couldn't afford the order. After my friend paid with a $100 bill, he reluctantly accepted it only to blatantly check it extensively and requested the manager to confirm the $100 can be accepted (not sure if it is policy but after the treatment from Richard, it sure was easy to assume it was directed with a certain intent). There was some more back and forth from Richard and my friend (you shouldn't have to do all this just to order a drink) and the manager, Ian, followed through by offering complimentary champagne. The fact Ian attempted to remedy the situation said enough on its own. This is a really nice spot to relax and seeing how management does care, it is quite unfortunate that line level employee bartender can create such a revolting and unpleasant experience. read more

We waited 5 minutes to even be acknowledged by the staff when we arrived with a reservation. It was not even that busy of a night. Food is not worth it. For the price, I just expected so much more. Drinks are ok and fairly priced. The views are worth it. Other than that all of that, it's a great place to meet up with friends if you are a big group. There is a lot of space and they have a really good TV for watching sports. Came here Memorial Day weekend with a friend visiting from out of town since their rooftop has one of the best views downtown. As always, it didn't disappoint. Our server, Tanya, took great care of us. She was friendly, attentive and when I asked about a paloma that used to be on their drink menu assured me they could still make it and brought me one. Overall we had a great time. I would definitely recommend stopping by whether for a bite or just for a couple drinks. read more

Was able to check out the rooftop bar a few weeks ago. Killer views of the city and great modern decor. Nice and open with indoor/outdoor design style and construction. I'm sure this place will get popular very quickly. Will have to come back sometime soon! read more
