Sunday breakfast-- good coffee, very odd, funky sausage gravy flavor, and the ingredients in all our food were just average, at best. Would not return there but they were very busy last Sunday, so morning mediocrity is somehow working for them. 2 stars for the biscuits and gravy, and for the truly crappy breakfast potatoes (and the cook had the audacity to refuse adding either peppers or onions to them per my upfront request, which BTW would have significantly upped the flavor of the frozen, pre-made little cardboard crap cubes you passed off as breakfast potatoes). I could give this place 3 stars but when you say to yourself, if I'm ever back to Lawrence KS, I'll never go back there because the food was mediocre, that's a 2-star joint. read more

I like the Roost, some tasty dishes, they freak out if you request a certain table, so just go with it. It's like - eat and leave we need your space. Some servers are great while others are strange and brush you off. I'm not a high maintenance customer but requests will make you pay for it. The biscuits and gravy as an item is spectacular, but I only sampled that; such meaty wonderful flavor, and richness. I instead ordered the corned beef. It wasn't a good choice overall. The meat is made in-house, but lacking entirely the wonderful nature of true corned beef. To corn something is to salt something, and I had to add so much salt that I should have charged them for freelance salting services. But I did not. I paid an exorbitant $30 for two breakfast plates. In this modern age, $30 for a couple eggs, a slice of bread, and some meat seems par for the course. Their Brisket is cooked in house, cubed well, and the connective tissue is well manipulated; but to call those unseasoned cubed pieces of brisket corned beef would be a fanciful stretch not worth the extra dollars. The holy trinity accourtment could as well been cooked more completely. The biscuit - I was told bested the in-house sourdough slices - is drier, a tad mealy, and tastes slightly of cornmeal. I did not like it - though the apple butter is a spiced wonderment. They should charge for that apple butter, and throw in a biscuit for free. Their sourdough is nearly bland whitebread, nothing being interesting about that. I'd avoid it if possible. They'd do well to strain the vinegar water from the poached eggs, because that much ambient vinegar really ruined a lot of the plate for me as I ate the eggs - which by the way were cooked flawlessly. A saving grace was the super thick and citrus-hinted french toast! Although it wasn't custard steeped - like all great french toasts - it was fun and flavorful. I don't know that I'd come back. If you're going to charge a million dollars for breakfast, it had better be on point. I assure you that I am able to make what they sell, and much better for much, much less. Really bummed me out, to be honest. It's very bohemian in there, so I guess that's their thing - nevermind the food I guess. read more

Nice little gem in downtown Lawrence. We had a wonderful lunch at the Roost. my husband ordered the roast beef sandwich and upgraded the side to a salad for $2 which was huge! The roast beef sandwich and au jus were a little too salty for him but the salad was fabulous. I ordered the chai latte dirty which was very strong just the kick I needed. I ordered the mushroom and leek omelette which was perfect. A few potatoes on the side and some nice wheat bread round out the meal with homemade strawberry jam. read more

Hmmmm... this place is cute inside, appears welcoming to all and has a good menu, so it's more of a three+ star. I think to earn the full four stars, I have to be pretty eager to return and this didn't hit that level for us. Pluses: a friendly server, Stephanie. My food was the best among our three orders, excellent coffee. The creamy tomato soup was great- substantial yet not too thick. Seasoned well. Flavorful. My turkey, avocado sandwich was filling and generous on the avocado slices. I thoroughly enjoyed it & recommend this item. Less Awesome... the portion size vs. price for the grilled cheese was incongruent. Also, my daughter was iffy on how she enjoyed the creamier cheese that was part of this sandwich. Kind of like cream cheese. Maybe it said that on the menu? Anyway, she wouldn't order it again. My hubby got the Kansan or something to that effect. He left full, however noted that portion size seemed small compared to other nice breakfast joints we frequent. I know, we eat too much as Americans when we eat out, but for $9-10 you do expect a little more. Last, we were disappointed that an hour & 1/2 before closing the "life-changing carrot cake" was already gone. Had breakfast on 06/18/24 and it was outstanding. Had the Veggie hash with a poached egg and a Breakfast Sandwich. Everything was fresh and cooked perfectly, I just love all the veggies in the hash. The sandwich was so good. Perfectly cooked, runny egg and sausage. The sausage was a treat in itself, like no other and I believe homemade. Our waiter was great too! Let me preface my review with the following information: I eat low carb, and I happen to HATE eggs. So, that narrows my traditional breakfast options down to bacon, sausage and coffee. And, when I go out to eat breakfast, I generally have that with a side of berries, or other fruit. But, it takes a REAL dunderhead to mess that up. Yes, I could make that at home. But, breakfast out on the weekends is just a personal tradition for me, and I refuse to give it up. So, what separates The Roost from the other places that I get my breakfast at is the service, which is generally: Friendly, helpful, prompt and pleasant. (And, I happen to know that if you go rogue and have a scone, or a piece of carrot cake, it'll be worth it and you won't regret a thing.) I took myself out to breakfast while visiting some family and this was an excellent stop. The eggs were incredible and fresh. There was so much salmon on my salmon eggs Benedict I couldn't finish it. I got an endless mug of coffee and read a book for a bit. My table had a little bud vase of fresh flowers on it.. Before I left I decided to get a vanilla latte to go and it was fantastic. They also had baked goods, muffins croissants and cinnamon rolls. When I told my family (locals) where I stopped for breakfast their eyes all rolled back in their heads as they talked about how delicious and fresh everything at the roost is! Will be returning! Overnighted in Lawrence on a cross-country trip and was jonesin' for a good breakfast instead of hitting the road with another granola bar. The Roost came up with better than average reviews. THEY ARE ALL WRONG. 8am is smack in the breakfast hour, just an hour after they open. Ordered "The Kansan" and swapped our the toast + potatoes for their specialty, biscuits & gravy. Biscuit was not fresh and not far from being full blown hard. Gravy was not warm and had entirely to much salt. By that I mean they dumped the whole box in there. I consider myself somewhat of a B&G connoisseur and this was crap. They're supposed to be good at bacon - they're not. It had been sitting under a heat lamp since the doors opened. Eggs were fine. We got there at 9:30 on a Sunday and the line was already out the door. It took about 30 minutes to get seated. First up on my list was one their famous Bloody Marys. I'm not sure which one I ordered but it came with their delicious bacon and cheese curds! Seriously? This might have been my whole breakfast. And the bacon here is unbelievably good! For my entree I had the Rooster! This was a delightful combo of pancakes, eggs and bacon and was absolutely calorie worthy! My friend had the eggs benedict and said it was equally as good. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and service at The Roost. Upbeat, a little noisy, and cool contemporary tapestries for sale on the walls. Our server was super friendly/attentive and kept in touch to make sure we had what we needed. I got the Traditional Benny and opted to trade for my partner's order of a granola bowl. The Benny came with breakfast potatoes and the whole dish was too salty for my taste but my partner liked it. The granola bowl had fresh banana, dried berries and figs, and yogurt. Simple and delicious. Definitely will try this spot again! Update: The salty dish was a fluke. I've been to The Roost a handful more times and have only had delicious food and great service. I went here a few days ago when I went to tour Ku, at first my dad and I thought it looked closed outside (it was cold so nobody was dining outside really) but as soon as we got it we noticed it was actually quite busy. I got an iced honey nut latte and i'm never one to finish a coffee but it was so good i finished it so quick! I used to love going to The Roost for pancakes and bacon. Used to. I went recently and almost sent my order back. I probably should have. The bacon was well overcooked and the pancakes were very dry and overcooked as well. I ate there a few months ago and the bacon I ordered was undercooked so I ordered it crispy. I guess they have a different definition of crispy. The inconsistencies in food preparation will drive you crazy. Also the butter shouldn't be so cold that you have issues getting it out of the little cup it comes in. The woman sitting next to me was having the same issue. She also had ordered pancakes with bacon. I didn't stick around to find out her verdict. I didn't finish the meal. Probably the first time in my life I didn't finish pancakes and bacon. The breakfast potatoes are also mediocre at best. Frankly the pancakes quality has been going downhill for awhile, but like a friend that's turning into a maga you hope they'll eventually snap out of it and keep giving them the benefit of the doubt. The best & most affordable (presuming you don't drink booze with breakfast but when is booze affordable) COFFEE Their spread is impressive for the price. They use a La Marz and Repetition beans. I don't know if they have a designated barista but the macchiato ($2.75) was traditional style. Not the prettiest ever (pictured) but quite well made. I got a chai because the waitress said it was a blend of a locally made chai and something they make in house. It was surprisingly creamy and sweeter than I typically like (less sweet than Starbucks) but still good. I wouldn't order again just because sweet isn't why I order chai and it was pretty expensive, as chai always is ($4 for large). FOOD The breakfast sandwich ($6) was incredible! Every ingredient had clear care taken. The sausage is very high quality and I got the egg over easy and it literally burst with gooey deliciousness when I took the first bite. The cheese was melted well. I think I would also be great with bacon. Of course, the focus should be the biscuit which was by far the best part. It was crumbly but that's a part of the fun! Most mornings you could have this, a cup of coffee and be satisfied for a while. In addition to my breakfast sandwich, I ordered a short stack of pancakes ($3). What a great price considering how big they are (pictured)! They were similarly delicious and totally hit the spot. Their syrup is also seriously good, maybe too sweet for 100% pure lovers but that's not my thing. My husband got the spinach salad with the garlic dressing and he said it was one of the best salads he's had since we moved to Lawrence. He also had the Reuben and said it was absolutely yummy. We will 100% be coming back to try all the cool stuff on their menu. Also, I didn't order this but I saw someone ordered the fruit cup and it looked straight up like a fruit hat!!! It was huge and had some really yummy looking stuff in it! I made have to indulge next time... SERVICE We didn't have a wait at all but we went for lunch on a weekday-- clearly that's the way to do it. My server was really sweet and patient despite my indecision and long list of questions. Went there Sunday morning and there was a 45 min wait. We put our names on the list and my husband noticed that a group that came in after us was seated before us. In turn, we waited approx 1 hour for a table. There is no inside dining and about 6 tables outside. When the girl brought us our food, wearing a mask, she asked us to put on a mask so she could drop off our plates. Seriously? They immediately dropped the check, which I appreciate, but came back shortly pushing us to cash out. The food was good but it sure wasn't a great experience. What is frustrating about the Roost is there is always a wait. Today 11:30-12:00 wait. After seated ordered fairly quickly then another 20-25 minute wait for our food. I finally asked for my soup and waitress said; "your food is on hold", not sure what that meant. Staff is friendly and busy. Giving this place 4 stars because of the inconvenience of having to deal with a mix up with my bill where the waitress charged me $33 instead of $15 but the manager was nice about the entire situation. Besides this fact, I went in one morning for brunch and ordered an iced coffee, mushroom gravy and biscuits, a homemade marshmallow, and a potato pancake. The mushroom gravy was out of this world! Loved how different that option was but it's only available on the weekends! The iced coffee was very tasty, I got the vanilla Carmella and it was definitely a little on the sweet side but woke me up for sure. The potato pancake was an interesting side, though I probably should have gotten something sweet since the mushroom gravy and biscuits were savory. Such a great place. I had a couple objections though. The bar stools came straight out of my high school biology class and are super uncomfortable. Ordered my eggs over medium and they came completely fried. And when I order a side of toast I would expect a slices, not one. Overall the food was great but I won't be back. Had to pour my own coffee (I get that), get my silverware, and request service. Kinda sick of tipping (bartenders that expect a 25% tip can suck it) and every server was sitting around drinking coffee with a full restaurant. read more

Excellent food and many choices cooked to your liking ! I love being able to get egg white substitutes. I usually get an egg white veggie omelet which I truly enjoy. It is served with a choice of potatoes and toast. My wife enjoys the French toast which is quite thick and definitely delicious. I know it's delicious as she sometimes offers me a taste ! The prices are very reasonable . Mixed drinks are also offered, my choice is the mimosa which is very tasty. You know it's good when: they have homey mugs in different colors for your coffee, the coffee is bottomless/serve yourself, they let you substitute avocado for meat, you hear grad students greeting their professors at neighboring tables. Ugh! The best part about this place was the wait staff and the homemade strawberry jam. I ordered corned beef hash with over-easy eggs and what I got was just a simple mix of chunks of corned beef with underdone breakfast potatoes and some peppers and onions on a plate with overcooked eggs. I've had better food at McDonalds. The restaurant setup was ok except tables they cram into the middle of the restaurant between the booths and the bar. Those tables are noisy and just in the way of everything. Your money is much better spent elsewhere for breakfast. read more
