Great place for dinner and drinks for people in the mood for various types of food. Though could be tough for the indecisive people out there. Fun, modern, artsy ambiance with open connected indoor and outdoor seating options. All ordering is done via QR code and paid up front. Our cocktails came out impressively fast. Sushi was also served pretty quickly. Servers were attentive, preemptively gave us more water. Left off the fifth star because the food was good not great. Only tried the sushi though so can't speak for the many other cuisines available. read more

The food is great, the concept is great. If they would just CLEAN, would be close to perfect. Why is this place so DIRTY? I've been here three times and every time we had to specifically seek out the cleaning staff to clear off the crumbs and wipe the tables and benches. Loved ordering at our table via website on our phones. We ordered a feast and everything came fast, hot and tasty. Sushi, chimichanga, potato rosti, pastrami hash, pork dumplings, Dan Dan fries ... Coffees, wine, beer... And ended with a slice of pizza! Really recommend this place for when you don't know what you want, they have so much to offer!! This is an unbelievable addition to a neighborhood that up until now had only limited dining options. I don't want to admit how many times I've ordered from The Roost at this point, but it is safe to say that ALL of the vendors are excellent and the ability to mix and match in one takeout order is awesome. Sushi and poutine? Tacos and duck buns? Whatever you want, the Roost is your oyster. Some favorites: Slice Joint square spicy pepperoni pizza. Yoko and Kota wontons. Red Apron pork belly poutine. Ako New Spicy Tuna. Hi Fi catfish tacos and chicken quesadilla (or really anything with their unbelievable smoked crema). On top of that, they manage to make the service work despite multiple vendors. We did have one order mixup, and they more than made up for it. Flies on the pastries. There are too many dogs in this area to not have food kept covered. Flies land on poop and all other sorts of surfaces then on your food. The space is fine and folks are nice enough but the coffee shop should seriously consider covering the pastries with a glass to keep the flies off. read more

Great place! We just moved a block away and tried this place last weekend. I love being able to order from all the vendors and get drinks from The Shelter. All the food was stellar, especially the sushi from Ako (a bit expansive) and the kitchen sink nachos from Hi-Fi tacos. Will be back often! The manger was very disrespectful and a Karen. Customer told her she was very pretty . She went into over drive security escorted the man out . Even the security officer on duty said she has an attitude problem and she do it all the time ... instead of saying thank you she went and tried to cost a whole scene... she very disrespectful to the customer i left after they left and got my money back. We ordered pick up from the sushi and cocktail restaurants/stalls. The ordering process was quick and so was the pick up. The cocktails were amazing and a really good deal for to-go cocktails trends ($15 for 2). We got the true hurricane and negroni... If we closed our eyes it's like we're at a real life bar. (Lol...) We got the Hamachi, two speciality roll, and the chefs sushi choice appetizers. All the fish was very fresh and clean... It was a great stay at home date night meal. Saw a few tables socially distanced inside. The kitchens we're roaring even if the dining in was sparse, good sign that their take out game is strong! I had a wonderful culinary experience at the Roost! It was my first time and I was greeted by a friendly manager, attentive wait staff, and all of the menu options you could possibly crave. I thought the app would be intimidating, but that was not the case. I was looking for a quick stop, but ended up dining in with my 4 year old. We tried something from a few places and everything was great and the quantities were perfect that we needed to take some food home! I wish I wasn't so hungry that I ate the entees before taking photos. I did manage to take a photo of dessert, which was the best apple pie ever! The food here is pretty good, as well as the variety. I would recommend. The reason I am taking a star away is not because they aren't attentive, but rather TOO ATTENTIVE. See we typically take our food to go, there is a separate QR code you scan different than the ones at the table. So while standing in the restaurant we scan and make our selection. If you sit they assume you are eating in and I don't want to sit at the bar and have a drink while I wait. So there is no where really for you to stand (or sit) when ordering and waiting for your food. But when you stand around, like tonight FIVE different people wanted yo help us, but we didn't need help. And when you say your good they CONTINUE with questions and suggestions in a slightly forceful manner (except one guy), so FOUR TIMES we had to explain ourselves so they would go away. It really was too much, as I was complaining to my husband in ear shot of #4 that tried to help us #5 tried and she was nicely aggressive. #4 had to shake his head and laugh cause he got to see what I was complaining about. We met friends outside here today and it was quite fun. The tables were well spaced and there were plenty of heaters for those of us who don't want to sit inside. The beer selection is good, though the food selection is not as robust as I would hope. But for Covid times it is understandable. Another food hall to join DC's food hall boom, and I'm going to say that it's a pretty average experience- nothing special, definitely not worth going out of the way to try out. When they announced the opening, not gonna lie, I rolled my eyes a bit- how many more curated coffee shops, taco places, and pizza joints does DC really need, especially in an increasingly gentrified area? But me being the foodie that I am and curious to see what a non-Asian food hall might look like in DC, I checked it out on a midweek date with the partner. To my disappointment, the food pretty much met my expectations. To start, we got Hi-Fi Taco's Catfish and Chicken Tacos. Both were pretty good, a four stars from me. The catfish was smoky and crispy, the chicken was juicy and a rich- my partner said at first he thought it was pork. For DC, prices were fairly reasonable- $4.50~5 gets you two small tacos. Next was the soosh, at Ako Sushi. This was *such* a disappointment, especially for sushi lovers like my partner and I. We had the spicy tuna and Kitchen Sink rolls, and it was mediocre at best, it didn't taste bad, but it wasn't particularly great either. The spicy tuna was different from any spicy tuna I have had before- It was very mushy, and the thin slices of jalapeno didn't do much to add spice or flavor, I would argue it clashed with the slightly-spicy flavored tuna mush. Did not feel like fish at all, and the avocado's creaminess and flavor detracted from any sort of fish that might have been in the roll. The Kitchen sink roll was better, but it came out a bit cold (odd, since there is tempura in the roll), and was also extremely small- 5 pieces. Tasted like something you might get at a supermarket sushi counter. The prices, to top it off, were ridiculous- $14 for 5 pieces of mediocre sushi? One piece of sushi gets you more than a taco- Definitely skip the soosh. Finally were the fries at Red Apron. We got the fries and the Dan Dan Poutine, and it was alright. Crispy fries, sweet garlic included, done well, a bit expensive for what they were but I'm not going to complain since it was a solid delivery. The Dan Dan Poutine wasn't bad either- it had the elements of a Dan Dan noodle, but without any of the personality. I was missing the kick of Szechuan peppercorns, or the tang of the vinegar that characterizes good Dan Dan noodles. It's something that a not-so-adventurous person might order, enjoy, and consider themselves "cultured" and "going out of their comfort zone." So, catered for the very folx gentrifying NE DC. What can I say, this place has an image, and it delivers quite well on that. For the boring yuppies around Capitol Hill, I imagine it would be a spot to frequent. I will say, the setup is very convenient and covid-friendly. You can sit down, order everything and pay from your phone, and have it delivered to you as well. And outdoor seating is fairly generous as well. But overall? A boring place with a nice interior/exterior, good vibes and open space for non-foodies to socialize. read more

I absolutely love the set up, the snacks, and the whole vibe of the roost. I have visited a few times now and settled into some outdoor seating (which is first come first served). The staff and servers are incredibly kind and attentive and super helpful! I love the concept and how you can order from a few different food options and it comes directly to you. It's great to take friends who want to eat different things! So far I've been really pleased with all the food options I have tried (taco night in America, grilled chicken quesadilla, and kitchen sink nachos from hi/fi, old bae, spicy salmon, and kitchen sink from AKO, the fries from red apron and the chocolate cake from state fair). The quesadilla are probably me absolute favorite (lovely Smokey flavor with good meat and cheese ratio). It's been really fun to try everything and the outdoor seating feels very safe and well managed. read more

Stopped in for lunch and grabbed a hazy IPA from Shelter, maple latte w/ oat milk from cameo, and square focaccia slice from Slice Joint. Everything tasted great and was well priced, and at 1:30pm on a Saturday was busy enough to feel "normal" without any lines and with social distancing. The Roost also has a cool QR ordering system where you can sit anywhere in the hall and order from all of the spots or grab take out at each spot individually. read more

This place is absolutely spectacular. I fear that I wouldn't be able to get in - if it wasn't for the COVID restrictions. The staff is spectacular! (Thank you especially to the manager & the team for accommodating food allergies.) The food is nothing short of incredible. It's like a Michelin starred restaurant with the diversity of choice. Pretty decent food, but customer service leaves a TON to be desired. First of all the gift card are almost impossible to redeem; I went to the pizza place for lunch and the lady didn't know how to use it for payment. Their online ordering system is clunky and won't allow you to use the card either. When I asked one of the servicers, I was told to call and order with a gift card. This evening I tried calling three times with no answer and even left a message, with no callback. When I just used my CC to order online and picked up the order I told the clerk that I had called three times he said "oh...yeah...um" and then turned to walk away. Classy. read more

This is a difficult place to review. I have been here over 10 times now. I want to give it five stars for location and ease of service. The food is up and down like an EKG machine. Sushi the first time we dined, was exceptional - it has been more and more average to subpar each time we came back. The pizza is good, not amazing, but good. The burger was quite good. I have come here in the afternoon to work and have a salad several times. The coffee was well made and I loved the single-origin beans. The beer selection is lovely - cocktails are well executed and some of the best in the city. I would come here - even more, if they offered better wine. A Chenin blanc from Texas that tastes not dissimilar to bath water, a chardonnay that tastes like nothing like burgundy or California. They are embracing a weirdness to the wine list. Weird can be wonderful, but this is bad-weird. Nothing delicious or classic on the wine list. It is as if the person who made the wine selection is nihilistic and cares about nothing. Or does said person care so much that they hate everyone who loves wine and wants to teach them a lesson like a Deadpool-like vigilante. Please BYOB and don't give them wine money. I am on my knees praying to the wine gods that they improve the wine offering soon because I love coming here. Maybe a good wine superhero can battle the vigilante and then put them in wine prison. The concept of ordering via QR code is fantastic. Not only is this great for larger groups not having to split the bill, but you can also order from multiple places at once. Today, I ordered an online pizza only to be sent back and forth between the slice joint to the online pick up. A nice addition to the area. This is my second time coming and I really enjoy the atmosphere. A place to meet up for drink or to bring your laptop to study and do work.
