The Root Beer Stande is an icon in the area and offers a staple of typical drive-in food (burgers, fries, dogs, sandwiches, ice cream), but with their own "signature" (a GOOD thing). Called in our order ahead of time. It was ready when I arrived and, even though very busy, service was both prompt and courteous. Food was very tasty and good portion size. 'Lori' burger was DELICIOUS - best 'patty melt' style burger I've had in YEARS! Crinkle cut fries and fried mushrooms also quite good. Wife enjoyed her cod sandwich (which had TWO good-sized battered filets on it). They also have a custom/signature root beer made for them - more of a 'spiced' root beer (in the vein of Barq's) rather than 'sweet' root beer (like A&W). It was good also (although my personal preference is the 'sweet' variety - certainly no fault of theirs). Overall, due to food quality, food quantity, food flavor, and good service, I rate them certainly ABOVE AVERAGE in their category and definitely RECOMMENDED if you're in the mood for signature drive-in food. This place always makes my heart and my stomach sing! I discovered it about a year ago and have been back multiple times. Every time is fantastic. I always order a Nathan's beef dog with chili, cheese, and mustard and it's usually enough to fill me up on its own. It's so filling and delicious! One of the best chili cheese dogs I've had. Sometimes I'll order a house root beer to go with it- because how can you not?!- and it's sooo delicious. The perfect drink to wash down your hot dog. Occasionally I'll also spice it up and get a side. Yesterday I ordered pretzel bites/nacho cheese as a side and they reminded me of the pretzel bites in the mall, which are just my favorite. The only complaint I would have is the fries, which I tried just once, but they were extremely salty and not a great flavor. The people are also so sweet and friendly. The set-up is a drive-in area where you sit in your car and order, or you can stay and eat there right in your car! The employees come out to the car to greet you and take your order and I haven't encountered a single rude person in all the times I've been. There's a younger guy and girl who I see the most and usually take my order- I'm sorry I don't know their names!- but they're both extremely patient and nice people and always offer any help to questions over the menu. But if the fries are the only complaint I have about this place, when I have so many other incredible options to choose from, this gem is still easily a 5 star and i would recommend it to anyone in the area! read more

Is the harbinger of Spring really the robin? Here in Southwest Ohio we think Spring is heralded by the annual opening of the Root Beer Stande. The Root Beer Stande actually opened a few weeks ago (that was stealth!) and perhaps we didn't notice it because of all the wintry weather we have been having. It has indeed been a hard winter! And you know that means cabin fever is everywhere, and on the first really good weather day we had a few days ago, people were out and about in force. We decided to open the car windows and sunroof and enjoy this (brief!) bit of mild weather to kick back our heels and enjoy some really casual fast food for a snack at the stand. It is obvious at once when you drive in here that no hipsters will be found, unless they have been locked away in the storage shed at the rear of the property. And all the customers here are as happy as the staff (unless they lock surly customers away in one of the many mysterious doors on the rear of the building!). It is a common summer hang-out, and often during warmer weather you will see many classic car cruise-ins, especially since this place invokes for many of us memories of the past and our childhood. It has been such for us as well, and we brought our daughter here many times since we first moved to Dayton back in the early 1990′s. She cut her teeth with an appreciation for the retro. And while this is not haute cuisine by any means, it does scratch an itch. I hope you come to enjoy the food here as much as we do. The root beer is top notch. And if the food isn't necessarily healthy, being fried and whatnot, it does make for a tasty treat once in a while. I've never been much of a burger person but this place is absolutely delicious! It was juicy and full of flavor. What puts the cherry on the top is you get to pick what kind of fries you like!! Will definitely be back. read more

This is heart breaking. This place has been a staple in Dayton my whole life. Unfortunately there is zero reason to go here other that for a root beer. We waited 45 minutes for cold hot dogs and probably the worst fries I have ever had. The quality goes down every year but they have finally reached the point where even a beautiful day can't make this car hop justifiable to go to. For the price it's not that great. The burgers are just regular cheeseburgers with a soggy bun, unripened tomatoes and wilted lettuce. The onion rings have zero flavor, most likely because they are frozen. Tried it once and will not be back read more

Stopped by for a quick bite and it was quite different. Cash only so stop by the ATM beforehand. Ordered the rodeo burger with fries and a root beer float. The burgers are only 4 oz but they have so many toppings and cooked very nicely. Fries weren't the greatest but hit the spot. The root beer float was absolute heaven as expected by the name. After driving by this my whole life, I finally stopped by the retro drive up style place known as The Root Beer Stande today. My boyfriend and I both got root beer floats and they were fantastic. We didn't get any food so I can't comment on the food. But if you want a super good root beer float in the Dayton area I would go here. read more

Classic Dayton staple. I used to live down the street and every time I come back into town I always make a stop to get a foot long hot dog and fries. All the deep fried food you'd want. A perfect place for a summer snack. The hot dog names are hilarious and the combinations are thoughtful and unexpected. I was in the area a few weeks for work. I stopped by the first week, trying to find a little dive and the Rootbeer stand was just that. Happy enough with the first dog, I made sure to come back again wanting to try another dog. The second dog wasn't as good as round one, but still enjoyable. My knock on this place is two fold. One is consistency. The first time great, the second time okay. The second part is service. It's just really slow, making it almost too long for a lunch spot even though it wasn't busy. The positives, root beer! Root beer! Very good. Also if you're not in a rush the service issue probably wouldn't be an issue. The food is fresh, they drop the fries and onion rings and make your dog or burger right after you order it. You definitely have to like that, piping hot, freshly made food! Give it a shot, there's more than enough types of hotdogs to find the one that suits your mood. read more

After recently relocating to Dayton, a few weeks ago I discovered "The Root Beer Stande" on Woodman Drive. I went there in the afternoon and found the food was great and the service was good. I've been there several times since then. After thinking for several hours about going there this evening for dinner, I went there after work. As usual, an employee came to my car to get my order, which I told her. Then for some reason, she (a middle age lady employee) tried crawling through my window. I previously had my window down to give her my order. She came at me, since one doesn't know what people are going do anymore, I got frightened. I didn't know if she was going to assault me, rob me or what. I've got robbed before like that, this time I didn't have my gun with me. She had her face right at my side window and was coming through the window. She didn't even have a face mask on like the other employees wore the previous times that I ate there (The previous times, the employees stood away from my car and took my order.) I quickly rolled my window up to protect myself. She started to complain so I rolled my back window down to talk to her. She said that she needed to take my order and I told her that I had already gave her my order, which I did, and she had restated my order back to me. She finally left and went back to the building. I then questioned if I really wanted to eat there after what happened. I decided "NO", so I quickly left. Where I come from, when someone does that to you, you pulled your side arm to defend yourself. Although you have good food, I do not plan to go back there for fear what that crazy lady might do. read more

I have driven past this place for the past month or so and it's been packed, so wondering if they changed their menu for the better since it's been so busy. No, sadly wrong. We ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a Denver ham sandwich. Boyfriend said cheeseburger tasted like cafeteria food, like old soybean filler burgers from school. The fries were halfway cold, old, and soggy. My Denver was just basically a $5 ham sandwich on a bun. We each took a couple bites and threw the whole order away. Do not waste your time here. Was totally gross and disgusting. Waste of money and tip. Oh, and the waitress stuck her head inside our car window. Hopefully she wasn't the one who tested positive for COVID. read more

I have been going here since I was a young kid.. love the foot long chili cheese dog & fried mushrooms & every time it's right on spot every time.. alway very friendly people who work there & you really don't have to wait to long to get your food either.. I love the faced that it's still kind a ran like back in the day. Not many old style drive inns like this left around, a dying breed that sonic is trying to keep alive bit without the soul of the original. The root beer stande has been around for as long as I've been in Kettering and has gone through an ownership change a few years ago. I've been here numerous times over the years but this is my first time helping it. First impression of the place is that a few gallons of paint would do wonders for the place, second thing I noticed was that the two carhops were not sufficient for the amount of cars to service. The root beer was outstanding and the food was ok, the tenderloin would have been a better choice, should have known better than to stray from what I know to be good! The carhop shorted us one cup and one other food item, took forever to get her to come back out and then even longer with our missing items, we were pretty much finished eating when the missing food came out. Hopefully the owners will improve upon these simple things, I'm sure we'll be back and hope we have a better experience next time! read more

While the kids wanted to give it 5 stars, I think it gets 4. We ate outside on the picnic tables and the owner brought us a bunch of sidewalk chalk and bubbles to use while we were waiting. We were walking on the bike path and decided to stop at the Root Beer Stand-e for the first time. My husband had to attend some training that evening, but we figured we had enough time to grab a quick bite, walk home, and get him there on time. WRONG! It took them over 20 minutes to pour root beer and warm up hot dogs. Why would it take that long? It wasn't even that busy. And the prices were high for the quality. Loved this place since I was a kid!! Great food!! The basic burger went from single to a double a couple of years ago and that is great. Awesome fries. Burgers have unique, great taste. Best coneys (short dogs) around. The root beer can't be beat. I hate eating in a vehicle!...but for this food I do. I have sat at the little counter with my boys and picnic tables are a great idea. I like the nostalgia of the curb service but wish I could get that food and sit inside somewhere and eat it. The A&W restaurants have almost as good of root beer...and you get freee refills which is reason enough to go there...but the food is no where as good as the Root Beer Stande on woodman. read more

They use frost top root beer which can also bought at any dollar store, the food is over priced and all frozen out off the box junk, the ideal of it's cool. But they should make real food.
