being from the midwest originally, i still haven't come to understand why so many bars in this city insist on blaring music so loudly that one must shout into another person's ear in order to be heard. do people like it this way? is there a general disdain for friendly conversation? do people here prefer to stare dumbly ahead, beverage in hand, periodically sipping from said beverage while having their ear drums blown out? do most people have stronger vocal cords than mine? or is it that deafening music in bars is a relief to many people who would otherwise have to admit that in fact, they have nothing really to say to the people they call their friends? that perhaps, they don't want to know what their friends have to say to them? what does all this mean?? why can't they just turn the damn music down? regardless of the terrible statement that blaring bar music may have to make about our society, i know that i can rely on cafe royale for its wine selection, comfy seating, pool table, and music played at a reasonable decibel level - this is a bar in which a person can actually relax. the big windows in front can provide much amusement, depending on who is milling around post & leavenworth. there's also a great view of the bar from the upstairs balcony, so if it's a crowded night (which is infrequent), you can go up there and watch what unfolds on the main floor. plus, there is nearly always some visually captivating art on the wall facing the bar, which provides additional bar-edification. and sometimes, if you're lucky, you may find a sleepy, cuddly dog on one of the plush couches - few things beat sipping a glass of wine next to a cuddly sleepy dog, especially if you're as dog-deprived as i am. but the best thing about cafe royale is that it's truly a great place to go with friends, be it one or five or ten friends, since there are plenty of spaces in the bar to gather, the drinks are reasonably priced, the staff & regulars are chill, and you can actually hear yourselves talk... read more

Probably the least pleasant experience I've ever had in a bar. I'm in San Francisco for one night, just finished a clinical shift in an Emergency Room, come into the bar with some friends to have a good time and relax. It seemed like a cool joint at first, and everyone was having fun. The wine selection was rather small, and when I frankly asked the bar tender (tall guy with short hair, curlyish? maybe) what my other options are in San Francisco for wine, he becomes extremely abrasive and attacks me personally. I'm not trying to put your job or your bar down, I'm just trying to bar hop. Why the hell would anyone go to a place where someone in the service industry gives bad service? So much for San Francisco. Awful bar. Jazz band was good, they should play somewhere else. read more

Will's thighs are on fire. The drinks are made with alcohol, which is important for a bar. I'm a big fan of Jimi, too. His love for the Alkaline Trio makes me feel like I'm back in high school, which is good for my self-esteem. Dan is a hardcore MMA fighter, so be sure to get him worked up. Jon is always very attentive and never loses focus. Some guy named Nick does a really good comedy show the first Wednesday of every month too. Go for that. read more

A chill place with friendly bartenders! I love this space. It has some couches in the middle to hang out on. I usually come here for our Couchsurfing weekly hang-outs on Wednesday nights. They have great beer and some good wine and decent prices. It usually never gets too crowded. One time I went here and we just had some water. We didn't order right away and the bartender was really cool about it. I definitely will be coming back. They usually change their art once a month and they have some great artists as well. read more

I'm sitting here right now enjoying cocktails with my boyfriend. The music is pretty good and his video show is entertaining. My dark and stormy is also great. BUT, as we have been sitting here there have been TWO live cockroaches running across the floor. My boyfriend killed one but that's kind of a turn off. Also, the bartender is wearing a man tank. No. Just no. In a bar that has the appearance of a classy-ish joint, he should at least be in a tshirt. Sleeves really help with the whole health safety aspect of dining and drinking out. I don't think I will be coming back here no matter how delicious this drink has been. My health just isn't worth it. They should probably consider calling a pest control specialist as well as asking their staff to wear proper attire while serving $10+ drinks. read more

Just moved in down the street and decided to stop in to this place when we saw their happy hour sign on the sidewalk. $7 Mules. Need I say more? The place is really neat. Has a cool upstairs that looks over the downstairs where there is a small stage that hosts jazz on the weekend. The owner was tending bar while we were there and he was really cool and welcoming. I would highly recommend checking this place out. And also, unlike other reviews, common sense should help us understand why security will not let more than one person in the bathroom at a time. read more

I used to have a good friend who lived right by here so we'd often meet up for some coffee here, otherwise a few beers later in the day. They have a cool calendar of events (music, art receptions, etc.), and there is a distinctly neighborhood vibe to the spot. As a bar it's too bad they don't have hard liquor, but they have a decent selection of beer and wine (not great, decent). Being Bastille Day, it was all French, and reminiscent of a 1940's Bogart film...I halfway expected someone to sing out, vive le France! I've been here twice for the Monday night stand-up comedy. On both occasions, of the 5-6 acts, there was one comedian that was downright hysterical, 3-4 that pulled out a few good laughs, and 1 bomb. Definitely worth checking out, you'll get a laugh and these up-and-coming artists will get some support. The place gets two stars for the god awful service. I waited 20 minutes to try to order a drink; only one bartender was making drinks ridiculously slowly. I asked the other bartender, who was just standing there, and he shrugged a "the other guy is making the drinks." I finally gave up and just sat at the table listening to the comedy. There are signs advertising $15 sangria pitchers, except there is no sangria. When my friend tried to order some food, the bartender said they were backed up and weren't taking any more orders (even though the place was half empty). Thirty minutes later, she asked again, he took her order, made the food, and left it on the counter without bothering to call her name; by the time she realized it was just sitting on the counter, it was stone cold. So, go for the comedy, but bring your own beer and sandwich! read more

Grumpy neighbor silenced, this place now feels better. They may still have a few bartender problems but with a monthly rotating art show and great music (check out Erin Austin if she ever blesses our neighborhood again) it can't really be beat for the area. Prices are low considering Rye and Amb-ASS-ador down the street (now including the newly renovated Owl Tree, which must be made of gold). Even though they don't have table service and it's on the edge of the tenderloin, this is a very nice place. Casual, but with excellent wine and delicious sandwiches. We had the Dostoyevski (huge slabs of brie with lettuce and prosciutto on wheat) and a chicken panini with pesto, chicken, lettuce, and sundried tomato. I came here to watch a free comedy show, and the cafe is alright. The place is a decent size with a lot of space, but I wasn't feeling the decorations. It wasn't busy at all and people come here mostly for the happy hour at the bar. It's not too bad of a place to sit down and relax, but there just seems to be better places around SF compared to this one. read more

Went here the other night (sunday) and its actually pretty nice: intimate setting, cool booth seating, jazz band was there (though we came at the tail end of the performance). They have a pool table too which is cool. Its primarily a beer, wine, and coffee establishment but their beer selections were pretty nice (had a franziskaner dunkel and moose drool brown). last tuesday night i was walking down post street looking for a place to hang out with my boyfriend when we stumbled on this lovely little place. loved the music (american analog set was perfect for this cold rainy night,) the low lights, and the little nooks and booths to hide in. i dug the bit of dinginess about the place- made it feel unpretentious. we ordered a lovely little bottle of tempernillo, a cheese plate and hid out in the corner. i agree that the wine list didn't and probably isn't ever going to make my toes tingle, but i will definitely be back for the charming unpompous experience. read more

I love this little bar and have been coming here for years. The owners need to do something about the urine encrusted stench in the restroom. It is beyond stinky....and put a hook somewhere so I don't have to rest my nice leather bag on the floor that smells like layers of encrusted, dried urine. That's all. read more

I stopped in here with my girlfriend on a Saturday night to have a few beers while waiting for another friend to get off work in Union Square. Great selection of beers, and we hit it with just about 40min left in happy hour. Overall a great place, ended up ordering two beers after happy hour had ended and bar tender hooked it up. Anyways, all is well, we're drinking...chatting with some barfly next to us...then....wtf... Some chick get up on a semi-stage area and starts singing opera!!!...and not that she isn't talented or anything. But it was almost as if she was trying to make sure NO ONE could talk to anyone...or do anything but listen to her sing. The regular I was chatting with groaned about it and told us to forget having any further conversions, cause we won't be able to hear. Even the bartender laughed and poked fun of the situation "once a month...once a month, we gotta deal with this".... Great dive bar, great beers, chill atmosphere....just don't go on nights with the opera people. Unless that is what you are going for specifically. read more
