[[HIGHLIGHT]]The Rutherford has great vibes and it is extremely convenient to MSG[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]; however, this was honestly some of the worst food I've experienced in NYC. I am disappointed to say this because it is in such proximity to The Garden, and would be an excellent venue to patronize prior to a show. Yet if given the choice, I would not eat here again. My party of four decided to eat at the Rutherford because we were seeing Lady Gaga just next door. We made a same-day reservation by calling around noon. The res was for 5:30, and due to city traffic we were going to be late so we wanted to call out of courtesy. In the 35 minute ride from Hoboken to Manhattan, literally no one picked up the phone. After coming in here and experiencing the place for itself, I can see why - the service was awful. No one was outright unpleasant (although I do think the hostess judged my outfit for Gaga a little, lol), but just not attentive whatsoever. Three out of four of the party went to sit at the venue while I parked the car because we were running late; when I arrived at the restaurant and sat down, no one came by to take a drink or food order until we flagged our waitress down after about 10 minutes. She literally asked, "Oh, did you want a drink?" Yes, girl! Obviously, lol! The menu is a little small, but I can forgive that. There are some starters, some handhelds, some entrees, and a separate seasonal section which I appreciate. Usually that means that the quality of food is higher - but that unfortunately was not the case here. Perhaps it was just the things we ordered, but I get the sense that food is not The Rutherford's strong suit. We got some chips and guac for the table, which was actually the tastiest thing out of everything that we ordered. The guac tasted fresh and the chips were nice and crispy - a plus. Everything else was either mid or just downright disappointing. My cousin opted for the buffalo chicken bites which was a nice size for a small plate - however, the chicken had that 'heavy' flavor that comes from sitting in the freezer too long (IYKYK). But the most disappointing thing was the loaded smashed potatoes that myself and my friend's daughter ordered. Now, when you picture "smashed potatoes," what comes to mind? For me, the image conjures a potato that's perhaps been cooked then smashed on a flattop or under a broiler to get some nice, crispy edges. Well, these were literally just a handful of BOILED, unseasoned baby potatoes with some shredded cheddar haphazardly sprinkled on (melted by the heat of said boiled potatoes) with a weak drizzle of sour cream and a meager smattering of bacon bits. It is hard to mess up a potato dish but the Rutherford done did it - like really, NO salt at all? Just a bunch of boiled potatoes? Alright lol. On the other side, my friend opted for the (aptly dubbed) "stupidly expensive" BLT, which she said was fine but not quite worth the $22.00 price tag. (Also, not for anything - they had a watermelon and feta salad on the seasonals menu, but it was topped with jumbo shrimp and I honestly thing those two things don't go together at all.) In addition, the waitress did not come over once to check out how the food was doing or if we wanted another round of drinks. (And by the way, she gave me the wrong flavor of Truly Seltzer. Not a huge deal, but I only mention it because it may be an issue if someone was allergic. I asked for one flavor; she gave me a different one without saying anything. Again not a big deal but I would have liked to have been given the courtesy of knowing this when she placed the drink down instead of me realizing halfway through drinking it.) [[HIGHLIGHT]]Despite this, the outdoor patio was lovely and (like mentioned) the vibe of this place is extremely chill.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] You also can't beat the location because it is literally across the street from MSG. However, I would stick to drinks here and skip out on the food. This place is awful. We ordered the buffalo bite chicken bites. They were so hard. It was like eating rocks. The service was horrible as well. We were constantly flagging down our waitress. It was almost impossible to get a drink. I have been a huge fan of Dear Maud in Hoboken, another restaurant from the team behind the more recently opened, The Rutherford. When I discovered that they had opened the new bar, I was looking for a chance to try it. My friends and I happened to be in the Midtown West area for dinner, so I suggested that we stop in for an after-dinner drink. From the young staff to the dark green walls, brown leather bar stools, and modern decor, the place was very similar to Dear Maud. In fact, their drink menu was almost an exact replicate. Because of that fact, I was able to quickly decide on a cocktail - my favorite, the Margarita Picante, which contained jalapeno-infused tequila, lime, agave, pineapple, apple, and a Tajin rim. It possessed the perfect balance of sweetness and heat. The main differences between the two venues were that The Rutherford had a much smaller interior, offered rooftop/patio seating, and had tables made of jagged slabs of polished wood. They also had televisions inside playing sports, a feature I did not miss at Dear Maud. The Rutherford was a casual, yet trendy spot across from the typical mediocrity around Penn Station/MSG, and would definitely be worth checking out if in the neighborhood. read more

I woukd give 4 stars but they tricked us with the bill. The server shows us the bill. We paid. Then she charged. I was surprised she never asked for the tip. Then I noticed she added 22% tip. There's not a lot here for vegetarians, but the fries are good, and so is the pita humus (surprisingly garlicky). The service is friendly and attentive. Pay cash if you can. They cater mostly to tourists because it's right across the street from Penn station. The main area is accessible, and there's a pistil up a flight of stairs, and a rooftop up on the other side. Salsa verde & queso fresco was fresh. It was an ample portion. The Cesar salad was unremarkable for $16 and the "Spicy" Rigatoni was neither spicy or vodka sauce. It was a bland, uninspired red sauce with no flavor. I asked for salt & pepper, which I found odd it wasn't at the table. They do not have pepper. Come again?!?! No pepper? That's right. Nada.
