My favorite thrift store is Salvation Army in Lancaster. I had never been to this location, and when we saw this one, I told my hubby I don't have high hopes. Boy, was I wrong!! I absolutely love this Salvation Army! I can't believe it took me this long to give this location a chance! I came here for an audition jacket, and came out with a few things! They have everything! There were cool vintage coats, heels in all styles, cool shirts that i found, and on top of that, there is an electronics section in the back that had lots of modern kitchen appliances! I might go back for a juicer if they have one still! Something really cool was that they had a sale going on. The associate at the front told me about it after I checked out. Items are already marked down, and they have sales on top of that from time to time! Super cool! The layout is simple. Location & Convenience This Salvation Army is in the Pico Union area, which I'm always around, so it's really convenient to stop by and check it out. Parking The biggest downside is parking. There's no parking lot, and street parking is usually full. It's a busy area with houses and businesses, so you often have to wait for someone to leave. Prices & Selection I came looking for a college shirt and was pleasantly surprised. Most of the T-shirts I saw were $2.99, which is a great price, especially for something last-minute. The shirts were in good condition and didn't look overly worn. I bought two for $2.99 each and one I really liked for $6.99, which felt high but I really liked it. Extras They had cute hand sanitizers at the front: $1.99 for one, cheaper if you buy more, and 99¢ each if you buy five definitely the best deal. Customer Service Customer service was good. There was no line when I arrived, but it suddenly got busy. Even then, another employee quickly opened the second register. The cashier was friendly, explained the sanitizer deals, answered my pricing questions, and gave me a receipt and a flyer for an upcoming sale. As a donator, 1940 W Pico Blvd. in LA is one of the the worst locations. Very small parking lot, but more importantly they almost never are taking donations. I've gone by several times and always failed at donating because they would not accept them. They no longer pick up for free. I was quoted $100 per box of clothing...They're charging us to DONATE?! I went to drop it off and they wouldn't take a cabinet that was dissembled with every piece of hardware attached to it....yet it has to be disassembled to fit in the car, but they won't accept it if it's disassembled, because then they can't charge you $100 per to pick it up. The Salvation Army used to be my reliable spot for last-minute needs and thrifting, especially in a neighborhood that's already struggling with low income. While the prices were never fully affordable, they were at least reasonable. But now? I don't know if management has changed or if they've completely lost touch with reality, but the pricing here has become outrageous. Used shoes, muddy and dirty shoes, are going for $19? Jeans from Target H&M and Forever 21 are $17?! You can get them new in store for 20 bucks . It's beyond ridiculous. This place has turned into another Goodwill, overpricing donated goods to the point where it's almost insulting to the community they claim to serve. Whoever is running this location, and others, should be absolutely ashamed. I can't imagine what kind of person would exploit their own neighborhood like this. I visit all the Salvation Army in Southern California, every week, numerous times, every week. I deliver a medical supplies all over Southern California, which allows me to kill time, and I visit thrift stores throughout California while waiting for work. I was in shock with how the employee in the picture was treating over a dozen customers in the store at one time. She was not rude to me, but extremely rude to a few of the customers in front of me. She was loud enough and vocal enough for all the customers in the store to hear how rude she was. I get it it's a thrift store and you don't have the greatest quality of life walking through the store, but everyone should be treated fairly and with respect. It seem to me that even the other employees were fearful of her. There's a professional way to speak to people. She had Bad energy overall which is a ripple effect in a company.. One bad apple can literally affect the whole environment. Although she sucked the energy out of the room. . The store was clean and all the other employees are so sweet. P.S. While I was inline witnessing this bad behavior, a customer had a paper cut and asked for a piece of tape that was sitting on the counter, This employee in the picture responded with "put that down., op touching our stuff that is not for you.!" The poor customer wanted a half inch of scotch tape. For her to react like that was ridiculous. On top of everything else that happened before that.. Hopefully somebody above her will speak to her. If she is that comfortable to act like that with 15 to 20 customers there, I couldn't imagine being there for a week as an employee. read more

They close at 7 not 6:45, I had no intention of going over that time so I didn't appreciate being rushed out. Not a bad thrift store. Parking is available in the residential street, watch out for street signs. Store has a weekly color deal so check out the sign by the entrance to see the weekly specials. Did a CHILD get ahold of a pricing gun and tag everything in here? The prices are insane! I love going to thrift stores, antique malls, flea markets, estate sales, auctions and yard sales, etc. I collect vintage and unique items. You never know what you'll find at a Goodwill or Salvation Army, but at this one it was STICKER SHOCK! Garbage that would honestly be $1 at any yard sale was $10 here! Lousy figurines from a dollar store in the '90s? Well, that's $8.99 now! I get that the money goes to a "good cause" (homophobes) but you're ripping off the community with most of the offerings. Lousy electronics that would be a 1/4 of the price at the Goodwill on Western. Nasty small appliances that look like they were picked off the street are almost selling for full retail. I think the pricing on t-shirts is what you'd expect at any other Salvation Army store, but the paintings, shitty IKEA furniture (selling for the cost of NEW IKEA furniture) and many other items blew my mind. read more

I have been shopping at the Pico Salvation Army location for the past four years. The employees there, especially Shelly and Rosio, have created a welcoming and compassionate environment for customers. Their kindness and willingness to help customers, including those with disabilities, is commendable. During challenging times like the pandemic, having a place where i felt supported and valued can make a significant difference. The Salvation Army store became a solace for me during that period. The store offers top-tier products, which adds to my overall satisfaction with the shopping experience. I acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of individuals who go above and beyond to create a sense of community and make a positive impact. I would like to add that I have seen numerous instances where the employees has been cursed out and physically assaulted. This area has many homeless and mentally unstable people who frequent the location. I strongly encourage corporate to employ a full time security guard before someone is seriously hurt or losses their life due to unruly customers. read more

FIX THE REGISTERS! This place never has two registers up. Terrible. Great store and great stuff but holy cow how hard is it to add another register? They spent two weeks adding brand new cameras but cant upgrade their vintage computers from the 90's. Waiting in line for 30 min to pay for a tshirt. Great store and extremely great prices. Like any store you have to spend time going through every rack to find good items. The employees were nice and answered all my questions. Some people are complaining about the prices - they are very good. The highest price I saw for clothing was evening dresses at $17. Everything is well priced and it goes to a great cause. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DONATE HERE!!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! INCREDIBLY DISRESPECTFUL AND UNAPPRECIATIVE OF YOUR EFFORTS! I had the most mortifying experience when I came in to donate my clothes at this location. My mother and I wanted to donate my clothes that we had just cleaned out of my house since I had just moved out. Street parking was full, so we went into the parking lot and decided to take out our donations as quickly as we could so that the car in front of us could get out, as they looked like they were finishing up their drop off. As we opened the trunk to get our donations out, the woman in charge with dyed lightened hair told us to bring the donations inside the storage room because the staff could not touch the items due to COVID. Completely understandable. Since my mother and I are petite women, we weren't able to bring our heavy bags from the car to the storage room by ourselves. So we decided to tag-team it, with me unloading the bags out the car and my mother taking them to the storage room. The woman then told us that there's movers that needed to get by and I couldn't place the bags where I was placing them. I then moved the items to another spot and took the bags closer to the storage room so that my mother could quickly take them inside. The woman then raised her voice with a snarky attitude and told us that we needed to bring them directly to the storage room. YES. WE UNDERSTAND THIS. But my mother and I couldn't bring them all the way there on our own so we were trying our best to comply to their rules while doing everything we were physically capable to do to leave room for the movers. I then went back to unload more of my bags from the car and placed them on the ground first to get ready to lift them up to the storage room. The lady snapped at us again to bring them to the storage room, and that was the final straw for me to let her know that we are trying our best with what we were physically capable of lifting at once. This woman cannot talk to my mother and I like that when we were doing everything we could to contribute to a good cause. She then raised her voice at me and told me that if I'm going to give her an attitude then she won't take our donations. SHE WAS THE ONE WHO GAVE US AN ATTITUDE FIRST! I would not have had a reason to snap at her had she been respectful and talked it out with us on what we could do to comply with COVID rules and make it easier for the movers to pass by... AND allow the car in front of us to get out of the parking lot at the same time. My mother and I realized that this location was incredibly ungrateful of donors and our effort to donate and decided to load our items back into the car and donate somewhere else. I then went back to let the woman know that they needed to implement the policy more respectfully and make it more understandable for people with large amounts of items who cannot physically get all the way to the back of the storage room. She then she proceeded to explain to me that I was actually allowed to place the items where I was placing them. But if you all remember, she previously told me that I couldn't place the items where I was placing them because movers needed to get through.... What??? That's why this whole argument started! She was contradicting her own words. This woman was not making any sense at all, and I still have no idea what she wanted my mother and I to do. I always speak to customer service workers with respect, as I have been in their place before and know what they have to go through every day. However, because this woman was disrespectful to us from the beginning and berated us when we were making our best effort to contribute while complying to rules, I had to defend myself and my mother from her uncivil attitude. I will not tolerate being spoken to in a way that degrades us as human beings... ESPECIALLY towards my own mother. I have never raised my voice at a customer service worker before, nor have I ever had an experience as terrible as this one. There is no reason for someone working for The Salvation Army, whose goal is to contribute to those in need, to be disrespectful to those who are trying to make the organization's cause possible. This woman does not represent the goals of the organization at all and is discriminatory of small, minority females. I'm positive if we were larger set, white, and had less contributions (like the people who were parked in front of us who finished up their donations), then we would have been spoken to in a different tone. Also, upon reading Google/Yelp reviews of this place, I noticed that some people have pointed out rude and inappropriate behavior from the same woman, so my experience was not the first time that she's treated donors terribly. Ive recently came here to donate 3 times and every single time I have been here the staff has been extremely rude. I will not be coming back here to bring my donations due to that fact that an employee turned my donations away because they have "not been accepting donations since june 2020" when I have came im in August/November after cleaning out my closet and December after cleaning out my boyfriends. I even have receipts from my donations dated and proof that I have been there and the lady had the audacity to send me away. Clearly for other reasons! I will now be donating to the location in Hawthorne which is a 20 min drive but I am fine with because the staff is so kind, helpful and appreciative of donations. I drive past this place whenever I leave King Taco. Finally went in today. The Good: Metered parking right out front. It looks like they get lots of food traffic so there are always spots around. The staff was courteous and helpful. The prices are good. I normally only shop for books and knick-knacks, but today I found a Harvard sweater ($3.99) and a Muppets tee-shirt for $1.49! I saw the same Muppets tee at Target last year for $15. Score. The Bad: There's a general dustiness to lots of thrift stores that I really can't get with. I don't know if it's lack of central air or what - but I really don't like shopping with stagnate air (talk about a first world complaint!). One of the smallest salvation army that I've been too. They have a sparse selection and it seemed like most things were in fair condition. There wasn't an exciting bundle of stuff to buy and I was done looking at the store in about 5 minutes. The only thing I would really come back for is if I need a drawer or baskets. For a thrift shop in the ghetto this Salvation Army has pretty good stuff! Love Salvation Army in general cuz of the whole 50% off things that are older than a certain date. I saw a woman find a burberry trench coat and i've found lots of Jcrew/Banana stuff. This review is just about the drop off and donation process. I just dropped off a few boxes and all of the employees couldn't have been friendlier or nicer. There were two guys in the back who were very helpful and sweet and the entire process was so smooth and easy that I will definitely be back to donate again! I didn't catch their names but it was a younger Caucasian male with a brown mustache and a younger Hispanic male clean-shaven. Also, since it was my first time here I went inside to ask where I should leave donations and the young woman at the front desk was equally kind and helpful. This is a pretty clean and decent store with no major issues with employee attitudes etc. the selection is pretty hit or miss. The problem is that the staff is very wise to the thrifting clientele who come here and if they think an item can even reasonably be purchased by some rich hipster, they will go all out on the price markups. I'm talking $15-20 for a ceramic shoe, $20 for a vintage book on dogs, etc. The attitude is very much "we will take you for every dollar you have." Pretty weird because these don't ever sell and eventually disappear, so don't expect major deals here. Clothing is decent though. read more

To whom it may concern, When you end up acquiring some of my donations, I feel the need to give you a little background. I am in the process of moving out of a place I've lived in for 7-8 years. In that time I've acquired a lot of stuff. Some of them things I bought, things given, things handed down, and some things that weren't even mine. I am a pack rat. The hardest part was figuring out what clothes to donate. I figure as long as the clothes wasn't torn or had holes in it, I would eventually wear it again. Maybe I have become my father. I asked Yelp for help and asked some girls what to keep along with some pretty boys. In the end I stayed up til 5am going through clothes because Salvation Army was going to be here at 7am. At first Salvation Army was not going to pick up in my zipcode. Wasn't profitable the guy said because my area is in the hood. But I need to keep it street, even if I became a millionaire I would live below the ten, just to keep it real! I understand why they got rid of my zipcode along with others, hard economic times. But suddenly they began to run out of donations, and just in the nick of time, like somehow the hand of God, they opened up my zipcode just before I was about to move out. Alleluia! The Salvation Army is 150 years old the guy told me and started in England during war times. You don't hear much about them until there is a disaster but they do a lot for the community beyond being a thrift. From rehab, ministry, and donations to other causes. The difference between Goodwill and The Salvation Army is that Goodwill is a charity and government subsidized. The Salvation Army is a church they make their money through our donations. The people who work for them have given their life to the Army. God's soldiers? In the end.... I have given you, 1 refrigerator, 1 dining table, a dining set and extra cups and plates, tupperware, 1 giant dresser drawer, 2 big bags of shoes, 5 big bag of clothes... and several lifetimes worth of memories. Laughter while wearing that shirt, the awkward first dance in those shoes, dinners on that table, that sweater that will always be warm because somehow it's kept my body heat as a piece of itself, spilling drinks on those pants on that night to remember. I've been to this particular store about four times. The store is kept clean, organized and the employees so far are nice. I wanted to donate a glass table set and a treadmill. The 2 men sent were a bit incompetent. The black gentleman had an attitude, as though he didn't want to be there. The Hispanic fellow didn't say much, not sure if he could. Well the black gentleman kept saying that the table and treadmill wouldn't fit through the door . I'm like well it didn't magically appear in the house. He was pissed. He said we aren't movers, there isn't anything we can do. Seriously!! So I say I can pay you to figure it. I ended up donating 2 huge bags of clothes, shoes, and home decor to GOODWILL because this location was "out of red bins" and couldn't accept ANY donations within 2 hrs of opening. I'd rather donate to non-profits but if you can't accept donations after an hour and 15 minutes from OPENING, the store could probably be shut down or removed as a donation center. I DO NOT recommend anyone using the donation pick up system from Salvation Army. First, they make you schedule for a whole day and won't tell you until 7AM the morning of what time they think they will come so you have to hold the whole day. This morning, when I checked in they said they would be here from 1PM - 4PM. At 4:20PM, I was able to dig up a phone number where I was told that the "drivers must not have gotten around to it but they would try on Monday." I move tomorrow for Chicago and now am stranded with a ton of furniture that I was counting on donating, no other thrift store open on Saturday evening to schedule pick up donations with and totally screwed over. All I wanted to do was donate a bunch of furniture for a good cause and now, because of the Salvation Army, I have to hire some movers in the next 12-16 hours to take my furniture somewhere. read more

Wow, Dont donate to these guys. I hauled outside a very heavy pull out sofa, in pristine shape, and very clean, literally. There was like an inch, where it looked like a tear, but it was just a little felt, sticking through the seam. I was in disbelief, when they told me, were not taking it. I was like what do people just donate new couches? The guys said, pretty much. yea, bs! This couch was in pristine shape, no lie. The pullout bed was used like 3 times. The cushions were still firm, with no stains, on one spec of the couch. Then they said, oh, it needs repairs. I'm like, you got to be kidding??? I go, this is a thrift store. Nope, they would not take it. So I hauled it outside, and now i'm stuck. Don't waste your time trying to donate, because, you will just be hauling it back in. My true take was, I was the very last pickup. Mine was scheduled 11:00-2, they came after 3. Then there truck was full, I was the last pickup, and the couch was heavy, so I think they were just being lazy. Either or, don't waste your time. I doubt if you will ever find a couch like mine, in a thrift store. I have yet to see one, so new and clean. read more
