Color me impressed with the sandwich shack. I came in for RI Food Fights and you had the choice of the goro and then a couple of the cold sandwiches. I'm not a big cold sandwich guy, so I went with the goro. The pros, this is a very generous portion. I didn't feel like it was too oily, I liked the bread and it was flavorful. The workers were all very warm and welcoming, this place is going to do well. They're situated in a great spot with the school right down the street and they're not too far off the highway. Plenty of parking in their lot. Back to the sandwich, like I said, I really liked it, but I think it could be improved. It lacked a little freshness to me and it could have used a little more moisture. Something like roasted red pepper strips or some marinated sun-dried tomatoes would go a long way. The breading, bread, and the low moisture provolone just needed a little help in my opinion. Other than that, I enjoyed this place and have already reccomended it to friends. I'll be back for one of the grilled chicken sandwiches. The prices can't be beat and they obviously care about what they're serving. Great job sandwich shack! read more

My next stop on the RI Food Fights #bestsandwichri challenge was THE sandwich Shack in Smithfield. You had the options for three sandwiches and the Chopped Italian, the Jenn, and the Goro. I went with the Goro (chicken cutlet, prosciutto, pink vodka sauce - they were out so I had red sauce- provolone). I was excited to try this place as my buddy @titaniumator texted me the first day of the challenge and said I need to check it out. Well I am glad he did. They have a robust menu of hot and cold sandwiches. There rolls were soft and fresh. My sandwich was very good. The red sauce was flavorful but not overpowering. I am curious about the pink vodka sauce so I am looking forward to returning and giving it a try. The crew making sandwiches were very friendly and made sure I enjoyed my experience. The sandwich was a good size and the price was fair for the quality and size. I will definitely be back. read more

Spicy Italian Grinder - Very good sandwich on a soft roll. When you open it up you can smell the oregano and vinegar, which reminded me of Jersey Mikes, but the sandwich is much better than that. It is packed with large portion of Italian meats...salami, pepperoni, capicola, mortadella, and provolone. I asked for the pepper spread, which is always extra points in my book. It comes with fresh lettuce and tomato with onions, banana peppers. I had to take the banana peppers off and once I did...Bingo! $16.50 Chicken Parm sandwich - Hard roll was the perfect bread for this sandwich, it was slightly toasted, which gave it a good pull. The sauce was decent and the chicken was just the right size for a sandwich. There was just the right amount of sauce on the sandwich to keep the bread the way it's supposed to be. Great sandwich, great price. $9.90 It's very easy to order and customize your sandwich on their website. It was our first time visiting this location and we came specifically for the chopped Italian grinder we had seen online. We were welcomed immediately upon entering and the person taking our order was very friendly and helped us make our selections; a chopped Italian, a Jenn, and a Goro - all on soft rolls. We opted to take our items to go today, but they also have a few tables if you wanted to eat in. The sandwiches traveled well and were very tasty - there was ample 'dressing' on them, which is how we prefer our grinders and they were made with fresh and good quality ingredients. Great experience all around. Someone posted a picture of their chopped Italian grinder on Facebook, and based on the number I heard ordered today, like me, many of us HAD to try it. You can see my pic, but it's pretty much the ingredients of an Italian grinder chopped up and mixed with a dressing. I know! It really didn't disappoint. After finding out about it, I was concerned that the dressing would take away from it, but the flavor was spot on. if I were to make it myself, the only thing I would change may be a little less dressing, but otherwise it was amazing. My wife always orders the same sandwich, turkey and provolone, and she said it was very good. She was only able to finish half a sandwich and, amazingly, I was able to eat nearly all of mine. I am a big guy, but we really could've split a small. And we were able to try one of their hard rolls and the soft rolls, both were excellent. They were all working, very hard, but they didn't let that stop them from making sure all their customers felt appreciated. The service was friendly and spot on and the vibe was really nice. Since this place is about a half hour away from my house, I also bought a spicy Italian grinder to go (if I'm going that far, I might as well get one for later-I'm no chooch!). I haven't eaten that one yet, but having eaten all the ingredients of it on the chopped sandwich, I'm sure it's going to be fantastic. Fast service, generous portions. Choice of soft or hard rolls were a great option. Unfortunately they ran out of a couple of sizes, which was disappointing as it was still early in the afternoon. I get it; sometimes you get a rush, so maybe it was out of their control. I had the Italian and it was huge with high quality cold cuts; rarely do you see mortadella in a sub. All the toppings were very fresh. Suggestions? I would use the chopped pickles rather than slices, but that's just my preference. There are a few tables to dine in and there is plenty of parking. Staff were great, welcoming and eager to serve. Definitely one of the best grinda's I've had recently. read more

Stopped in today for Lunch and ordered the spicy Italian. Very tasty sandwich and friendly service. I think they are a bit overwhelmed with the amount of phone orders because they were very backed up. I ended up waiting 30 minutes for my sandwich which is a lot for lunch break. I've eaten here a few times already and can't say enough good things about the food and service at this place. With a great smile on the face, you greeted as soon as you walk in the door and your order is taken quickly. The staff prepares the food very quickly and one of the things I love about this place is that it's a small business, not a big chain. It's a mom and pop restaurant owned by a family and all of their family members pitch in to make this a smashing success. They have a good size menu with lots of options that will cater to most diners taste buds. Everything is fresh, including the different types of bread that they use for their sandwiches. They use high-quality deli meats and not processed garbage like so many other chain restaurants do. The sandwiches there are absolutely HUGE!!!! so, either bring your appetite when you go there to eat or plan on having leftovers to enjoy later on. Locally owned small business! I found them on Facebook and the sandwiches looked incredible. I'm always on the hunt for a good Italian grinder. I finally got a chance to try them out and was very pleased. I called in my order for 2 spicy Italians on my way home from work. (They had extended hours this day!!!) It was still being made when I came in, and I saw every deli meat was cut fresh for my sandwiches. The bread was great for the hard rolls I got--not overly hard, but definitely will hold up to a saucy or thick sandwich that is jam packed. Friendly and personable owners who seem very happy and motivated to be in business. Also, they have DEEP RIVER chips...if you know, you know! The best. My only wish is they extend business hours. I work a typical 8-4:30 Monday- Friday schedule, so the only chance I would be able to pop in would be a Saturday. It would be fantastic to have the option to pop in during the weekdays to pick up some sandwiches for dinner every once in a while. The owner did explain there seems to be a lull in business after 3pm which is why they close then. Totally understand. They're still new though, hopefully once word spreads and business picks up more they'll be open later! Prices were definitely reasonable, and they did not skimp out on meats.
