I recently found The Scratch Room through Yelp. Visited on a Sunday morning when it was pretty busy and we had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. The staff was welcoming and the restaurant cozy and simple. It reminded me of the kind of small town restaurant you might find in the mid-west, unassuming but friendly, with a nice family and "after church" kind of vibe. Service was prompt, the waitress friendly. Coffee and drinks came very quick. I had a California omelette with roasted portables. A good choice, it was tasty and filling. Definitely try the banana bread as a side. It is excellent! Also worth getting one to go. Overall, eating at the Scratch Xafe was a good experience, and I look forward to eating there again soon. read more

Came here for a Sunday brunch and was not disappointed. It's a smaller sized place so there was a short wait but there are chairs outside so it wasn't long for a party of 2. Staff was super friendly and we had two waitresses helping us (confusion or on purpose I don't know). I normally go for a "standard" breakfast but decided to try their skillet and I was glad I did because it was really good. Only downside was the toast wasn't really toasted more so just warmed up. Rating: 2/10 - Truly Disappointed After 10Years I have been coming to this restaurant for over 10 years, but after today, I am truly disappointed. My family and I have always been loyal customers, we always tip generously, and we have never given this establishment a reason to treat us with anything but respect. Today, that streak ended. We came in with a party of 9. Our usual, normal spot was completely open and ready, but the host looked visibly bothered that we wanted to sit there. Instead of seating us, they made all 9 of us stand right next to literally 10 wide-open seats for over 5 minutes. To make matters worse, the staff kept giving us looks that made us feel incredibly uncomfortable and unwelcome. In over a decade, we have never been made to feel like a burden here until today. It wasn't cool, and it completely ruined what is usually a great family tradition. It hurts to say this after 10 years of loyalty, but if you have a big party, don't go here. Ultimately I don't know what was worse, the food or the prices. We ordered the chilaquiles with carne asada which came out to $32 per plate. As someone that eats these a lot, the nicest thing I can say about them is that they are NOT SEASONED. Please do not expect authentic chilaquiles, they needed so much salt that it kind of ruined the experience. The carne asada was also missing flavor 4/10 The drinks are cheap which is a plus 10/10, but please DO NOT expect anything great out of the chilaquiles. It was solidly good -- the kind of honest, homemade plate the name "Scratch Room" demands -- but it didn't ascend to the remarkable. The potatoes were thick, rough shreds, nicely griddled but crying out for salt and seasoning. The real star was the chile verde draped across a cheese omelette. Just a handful of pale pork chunks, barely seared if at all, stewed until they reached a tender, uniform softness I immediately filed away for my own kitchen experiments. The sauce itself was beautifully balanced: bright, peppery, properly spicy, with no greasy heaviness weighing it down. I loved it. The water, of all things, tasted unusually clean -- filtered, served in those retro blue plastic cups that look brand new. Next time I'll be ordering their famous banana bread. Went to Scratch for brunch today. This was our second visit. When we walked in, the hostess immediately asked, "How many?" There was no greeting, smile, or warm welcome. She then looked at my husband and said, "Come on," which felt a bit abrupt. She seated us at a small two-person table with very little lighting, right next to a fire extinguisher. I hesitated to ask for a different table because her demeanor didn't seem very welcoming. Shortly afterward, I noticed a white couple of two come in and they were seated at a booth without hesitation. While my husband was in the restroom, the hostess came back to ask what I wanted to drink. I took the opportunity to ask if we could move to a table with better lighting. She pointed to the table directly next to us, which wasn't much different. I mentioned that the booth area seemed to have better lighting. She paused for a few seconds and said, "You don't want that table." After another moment, she said, "Fine, you can sit at the booth." Once my husband returned, we waited a few more minutes before our server took our order. To be fair, the server appeared to be handling several tables and was actually very friendly, attentive, and pleasant throughout our visit. Then another white couple came in, and once again the hostess seated them in a booth immediately with no hesitation. At that point, I couldn't help but notice the difference in how tables were being assigned, and it left me feeling uncomfortable. Whether intentional or not, the interaction with the hostess created a negative impression that affected the overall experience. The food itself was excellent. I would rate the food **5/5 stars**. Everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. We didn't mind waiting for the food because the quality was worth it. Our waitress checked on us and asked if everything was okay. She went on break, and the new server didn't check in on us, just came and dropped the check on the table and never came back. Didn't even get to ask if we needed any boxes to go. Called to ask if they had bottomless mimosas the lady did not know, she said she was going to ask and then just gave the phone to someone eles. She never said her name which was odd I asked her if they had offered bottomless mimosas and said i dont know, i said oh you do not know if your restaurant has it? And she said no. Banana bread came out first, a large slice, steaming hot, with yummy salty butter. We loved this, it reminded us of a cross between cornbread and a muffin, it was definitely more savory than sweet. My Original Eggs Benedict was very good, although I thought the sauce could be a bit richer in taste. The Canadian bacon was tender and flavorful, eggs poached perfectly, loads of well cooked potatoes, onions, and one, lonely piece of red bell pepper on the side. Husband got the Chorizo Bacon Burger, which the menu states is "chorizo seasoned bacon," so he was expecting bacon slices. What he got was loose chorizo crumbles that tasted like bacon. It was really tasty, but not what he was expecting. His hash browns were fine. The bill was $41 for our two meals and one iced tea. The gravy for both the country fried skillet and the biscuit had nice small bits of sausage, would have appreciated a little more gravy, but still tasted great. I'm usually not the type to write comments but I wanted to bring this to other customers attentions since I don't see it mentioned. My sister and I were on our way to Disneyland and decided to grab some breakfast outside of the park. We saw that The Scratch Room had great reviews and decided to try them out. We ordered the protein bowl and chile verde omelette along with their scratch made loaf. The loaf was ahmazing! We loved it and paired with the salted whipped butter, perfect combo. The chile verde was good along with a side of potatoes were also tasty but the steak in the protein bowl was so hard to eat. It barely any taste to it and I added not only black pepper and salt but also Tabasco. The steak was raw and was full of veins I could not even chew through. I understand some pieces but EVERY single piece of meat is ridiculous. We later asked for the check and I had hope that when the server came to clear the table, maybe they would ask how the food was, seeing my plate full of unchewable steak but no... Then! When the server came back with our check we noticed after paying the total charged amount increased slightly so looking back at the check we notice they have a "3% surcharge on credit cards that is not greater than our cost of acceptance".
