I've needed repairs or replacements that were under warranty SEVERAL times and every time requires me to call, email, go into the store several times to *maybe* get someone to respond. For the current repair I'm waiting on, we've been without a shade for 4 months and I can't get anyone to respond to be regarding a proper replacement. For a product that costs so much, I would expect top notch customer service. I will likely now have to work with a competitor to get the replacement as I think I've given up on the Shade Store at this point. read more

It is now June 3, 2026. After many many weeks of silence, Shade Store arrived at my home. They promised that they had the correct measurements this time. Installer comes opens the box and says "they got the measurements wrong again; sorry." I immediately contacted the person who had been calling me. Crickets. They have left us with a half done living room and can be seen from the outside of our house. We will now have to replace all the shades again bec they all need to match. I have demanded that they refund the close $4K for the entire project. Still waiting to hear from them. I may have to take this to court to get my money back. Do NOT use this company. The Shade Store experience was so disappointing. Don't be fooled by lovely showrooms and fabrics. They have a ridiculous process whereby they ship all the materials to your home for an installer to come at a later date for installation. This means that no one has reviewed the shipped materials for completion, quality, etc. My install was disrupted by the incorrect hardware accompanying my drapes. I then had to wait another 3 weeks for a new installer to be scheduled...even though they had expedited the hardware to my home. During this period, I had a partially installed drapery in my primary bedroom. To top it all off, I spent over $20K for my draperies and am still waiting for a service manager to return my call. we waited a month to have our drapes installed . All the products were shipped to us in 3 deliveries. The day came to install and the installer showed up . He informed us his partner called in sick and he couldn't perform the job himself . He left. Nobody called us from the shade store to reschedule. when we inquired , we were told to go on a website to reschedule. the next appt was 1 month out . so far , the sales guy and customer service are passing the buck . we still haven't had our drapes installed . I would think it would be appropriate to make us the next appt as they cancelled us. This is extremely disappointing for a high end product to have such poor customer service . read more

This store is eager to collect your money. The shades I had installed simply do not fit, literally all eight of them have issues (most are too narrow, a few crooked, and one is 3" too short). TSS did re-install shades on one bay window, yet they still do not fit. Yes, they charged me a fee to re-install. I have reached out countless times to the sales design consultant as well as to the person who responds to the Yelp reviews asking to please help resolve this, but have essentially been ghosted by both. I have been trying to resolve this for more than five months now with countless emails to them asking for updates or requesting estimated timelines, many of which go unanswered or require multiple follow-ups to get any response. There is little to no accountability nor sense of urgency to help resolve their mistakes. I am now stuck with shades that do not properly fit the windows, ie gaps on either side of the shades to where the window is which allow walking by to easily look in to the house. As result, they lack privacy as well present safety risks. Happy to update with more details either + or - in the upcoming weeks. read more

Initial review (see update below), 1 star: Very expensive shades and poor customer service. I needed shades for my home. The "design consultant" was not very good. We had to basically select our own. The measurements were all off. You have to review them and double check each one and the material selections weren't correct. I must have gone back and forth about 10 times. Finally place the order schedule installation more than 6 weeks in advance, the installer doesn't show up after I waited around all day and I get a call after the appointment was supposed to happen that they needed to reschedule and didn't offer me any accelerated time, just the next available slot. Really horrible customer service especially for such an expensive place. Stay away. Update 6-26-25: The escalation worked. They sent the installer this morning who was fantastic and the shades look great. I wish I didn't have to resort to public reviews, but I feel much better about my purchase and will change the review to 3 stars. read more

The TLDR on The Shade Store is that they have no solution for a ceiling that isn't perfectly level--and they don't check that when they come to measure. Because that might lose them business. I have been dancing with Shade Store on my Kitchen roller blinds for a year. I hesitated to write a review, because I was hoping to solve this in a civil way--but in reading the years of terrible reviews, it is clear that the goal is to wear down frustrated, now empty-pocketed, customers into giving up. Note the same person responds to all comments on Yelp--that's their job. Someone at this company has to have a job to combat all of the bad reviews on multiple platforms. I'm convinced this sport for the employees of The Shade Store--how long can you string a customer along before they break and post a review...is that the office pool? My story involves so many visits by the next "best technician we have who trains all the others" I've lost count. Each time the person comes and tells me that my ceiling is crooked (something that should have been revealed as uninstallable before I spent a few thousand dollars) and this is the best they can do. The best they can do is hang the shade crooked so the motor clicks and moans and doesn't cover the window at the top. Between each future failure to resolve the issue are up to three weeks of back and forth between the corporate service person (who never responds to what you have said to her in emails she doesn't read) and the local person (who has had the death of two family members and an emergency surgery-sorry not in office--that was cancelled and rescheduled--sorry not in office-- as a theme that is starting to erode as believable--but I'm sitting here waiting to be served and there are other employees who can step in for vacations in real business settings). They delay and delay. Then they book appointments without consulting me or my schedule. I've asked for one thing. Refund the shade. Just one shade. Then I will find a contractor who is qualified to install shades to either fix it. Their responses have been: 1. Let us send the best tech we have () 2. Fine. Should we schedule to come retrieve our product (so your other three blinds in the room don't match)? 3. Maybe you can get a bid and I can submit that to my manager and get you the money to fix it (if you've ever bought a car you know this move). They really must be incentivized to string people along--because most legitimate businesses would recognize that when their otherwise good product is installed correctly and working, it is the best salesperson for the next blind sale. Instead, for the refusal to refund one blind and leave it to me to get it rehung by a competent contractor, The Shade Store has abdicated future business to the tune of $10-15k. It's sad really--to make customer misery the way you maximize profit. It's also the worst of business practices. My time. My labor. My headache. They really don't have installation and post-sale customer service figured out. Good showrooms and selection of products. Pleasant and professional sales people in-store. We've purchased various shades (blackout, sheer, up/down, etc.) for a dozen large windows over the years, most recently 3 years ago. We've had to call for on-site service to repair frayed cords on three occasions and replace a "clutch" once. Each time, customer service asks several times over email for the same information we provided on the initial service request (photos, which window, etc.), then goes radio silent for a week or more on each email turn. So, we can't use the shades for what turned out to be months because of their non-responsive delays. We live near a store, so I went in daily for a while to get it resolved, and I was baffled that the store sales people can't do much to fix the customer support issues. Overall, a fine product and really bad post-sale customer service. Worth shopping around for another company that has better customer service, because you're eventually going to need it. read more

They took photos. Dusty said I need to come in and look at the different options. Traveled all the way across town to meet with Dusty to review solutions. I couldn't have been more clear: the only room that was critical and time sensitive were black out shades for my guest room. I needed these shades installed in JUNE before my 83 year old uncle with light sensitivity came to visit me. So what happened? Not once but TWICE the Shade Store showed up with the wrong shades to install. A 7-foot long shade is never going to fit in 3-foot long window. And this happened twice. I ended up spending $2,000 for my uncle to stay in a hotel. Two months later? I still don't have the shades. The very first email I received from the Shade Store was from the President, Zach, who assured me: "please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly if you have any questions or if there is anything I can do to make your experience with us more enjoyable." Really, Zach? I've emailed you 19 times. 19 TIMES WITH NO RESPONSE. Having read the nearly 100 horrifying YELP and Better Business Bureau complaints about the Shade Store I could kick myself for not doing my due diligence. I have no idea where to turn now. I don't understand the 1 star and bad reviews. I've had nothing but positive experiences in this store and I've been coming here for years. Every shade in my condo is from this store. I have been working with this store for years - my tardiness is not their fault but mine, because I've been renovating one room at a time. Every visit, every email, every phone call has been pleasant. The customer service is above and beyond. I love going into this store. I get so much help and guidance. Even when I'm indecisive they are patient with me and offer suggestions which I value. I love the quality of everything I've purchased. Because of the 1 room at a time renovation I have worked with many of the staff here but they have all been wonderful, as have the installers and the people that measure. Customer experience pre-purchase was all great; the trouble started after placing the order when the estimated installation dates were one month beyond what we had been told. Despite repeatedly asking to be put on a waitlist or have some accommodation made due to a hard deadline on our side, nothing was done. We've been playing phone tag with them since and haven't been able to get them to budge. The service is unbecoming of the price that was paid. You are better served taking your money anywhere else. Wow! I have had wonderful results with the shades I have ordered from this company. If you read one of my reviews of The Roman Shade Co. you will see that they don't return your phone calls, text messages or emails and will finally respond with insulting and rude comments to your reviews. So far, The Shade Store beats these competitors by a mile. At least you get a polite response with an invitation and an apology to call them to discuss. Yes, they are very expensive, including return visits expenses and can be slow, but their products far exceed The Roman Shade Co. and you don't get a kick in the teeth when you leave your review. They are very popular and pay their employees a fair wage that is why they are slower than you might like and more expensive. I worked with Ivy in New York on a large order of custom drapes which used fabric from a wholesaler. The whole experience was delightful and the shades are beautiful. read more

From my tenant Weeks ago I scheduled the service for 8-10am on Monday, March 17 after the contractor for the first appointment came outside the window we designated and didn't stick around for more than 30 seconds to allow us to get home. Is the March 17 appointment confirmed? If so, why have my landlord and I been emailed everyday for weeks asking to make a new appointment? I'm sorry that you had a medical emergency. I called the general help line and sat on hold for an hour a few times before giving up. This process has been beyond frustrating. I found The Shade Store to be incredibly unresponsive and unprofessional, particularly Neil Thein. I scheduled a home measurement and that went without a hitch. However, afterwards I had to follow up with Neil, the designer, to get a design and quote. No response. I followed up several times over a span of 6 weeks. Neil finally responded by calling me when I had another meeting scheduled, explaining he thought he had the email in "drafts." I hurriedly told him I had another meeting and he said we could connect another time. Then I followed up with him over email - dead silence again. This is completely inappropriate for something that is supposed to be a premium product. People are looking to spend good money but The Shade Store isn't even interested! read more

I waited a month for an appointment and when the appointment comes the service worker did not have the proper tools to fix it, or the right amount of workers (after I called ahead to remind them how tall my ceilings are). I was told they can expedite my appointment for the next week but they only have availability another month away. When I call customer service I was told someone was gonna get back to me. After 4 straight days of calling no one has gotten back to me. This isn't the first time this happened. When they scheduled the fist installation they needed to reschedule it as well. I moved into a new home last year with lots of large windows and no window treatments. Deborah assisted me through the process like a pro amongst pros. As you can see from the photos, my windows have some unique shapes, sizes and I get a lot of direct sun. Deborah was super patient, knowledgable, and asked a lot of questions. She took the time to introduce multiple options, discussed the pros and cons of each and in the end made some suggestions that were spot on. Deborah also work worked closely with the installer (who was awesome) to make sure the end result were perfection. More recently...I'm a realtor- one of my homes had Shade Store shades and one of the cords broke the day before an Open House (most likely due to someone being to aggressive with the cord). I called Deborah and she reminded that the shades come with a warranty and that it would be repaired no charge. She had an installer out the next day to fix it. As s a realtor, I see lots (and open and close lot's) of window treatments. The Shade Store ones are just made better. You can actually feel the quality. Patrick at the Shade Store on Fillmore did an amazing job helping us out from start to finish, from picking out the right treatments to making sure fabrication and installation were 100% to our satisfaction. The fabrication was done incorrectly, twice, but Patrick made sure it all got fixed without a worry on our end. Part of the problem may have resulted from the job being at our Sonoma Coast home and it appears they may rely on local contractors to handle fitting and installation. But again, Patrick made sure it all got fixed. There was some delay but that was not a problem for shades, so all good! And the quality of the shades themselves is outstanding. Because we had some weird angular windows that the Shade Store does not handle, we had to buy some shades online and I installed. While that went smoothly and they look good, they are not going to hold up nearly as well as the solidly well-manufactured, expert installation we got. read more

I chose The Shade Store because I was optimizing for service quality. Every part of the experience up until I made the purchase was fine, but after that things went quite downhill. I ordered four shades, and two are completely different sizes from the others. One of the shade broke and will no longer raise or lower. I have scheduled three appointments to get this fixed, and each time the same item to fix the shade is missing. I have spent about four months trying to get this fixed - still no resolution. In that time I have outfitted the rest of my windows with great quality shades, fully installed with great service from Everhem. I would highly recommend them instead. read more

I scheduled a design appointment online for the shade store. Within 2 days I had 10 emails from Neil Thein. None of them to schedule a design appointment. Many of them to schedule a measurement session, which was clear in the directions that I should know exactly what I want before scheduling. So I emailed Neil. Hey, maybe their email also was broken. Cheap, but excusable. His response? "Do you want to FaceTime?" So that survey filled out including my preferred in home schedule date, the personal measurements I provided, the design request form I filled out... no one reads them. You'll just get automated drip marketing emails from "Neil" who probably isn't a real person trying to push you through their standard sales path. Want an in home design consultations? Want a human to respond to you? Want quality service? Go somewhere else. Want to interact with a ChatGPT lead gen engine? Don't care what quality products you're going to get? Like low effort sales? The shades themselves are beautiful. However, the complete indifference to customer experience and lack of quality of the opening mechanism is why I'm giving this two stars. Don't bring this company into your life or home. They will make your life harder, not easier. Just don't do it . There are other providers out there . I've been trying to get them to come back and fix an error post install (a cord was incorrectly installed and the shade wont open). I would have expected them to be able to come fix the mistake ideally in a few days if not a at least a week. It's been over 2 weeks. After many calls and emails (and even a plea from an interior designer who I assume brings them a lot of business). I still can't open my bedroom window shade. the actual disappointment and frustration stems from the experience of no one seeming to care that my life (ability to open the blackout shade in my bedroom ) has been impacted by their install error. The experience is similar to calling a huge cable or phone company - no flexibility, don't seem to care at all, sort of like you're a little cog in their machine. The response to my request to come fix the install error so I can open my bedroom shade: our next available appointment is whatever our system shows - 3 weeks out !?!?! So, due to the shade stores' inflexible and indifferent approach to customer service it means I'm living with not being able to open my bedroom shade for about a month. An update since I posted my review on the The Shade Store in San Francisco. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a call from Tami, of The Shade Store, who reports right to the CEO. She has jumped in to help make sure that we get things back on track. She helped in getting me a refund for the product they do not have the material for any longer and is expediting the product I am still waiting for. It has been a breath of fresh air to work with Tami, I am very encouraged in knowing The Shade Store takes customer service very seriously. I want to do business with an American Made Company and am very glad that we could come to a resolution on things. Thank you Tami and The Shade Store for stepping up! I bought two rooms of Roman shades, and one large room of curtains from the shade store 12 years ago. I really love their presentation and their choices. It's like the Apple store for window coverings. The curtains have held up really well, the Roman shades have held up, reasonably well. I don't have anything to compare them to, but Roman shades, I think are just more likely to fail. Their customer service has been great. I've needed a few extra small parts over the Years And they've sent them to me for free. They are not cheap, but I would definitely go to them again for my window needs. read more

I really had a very good experience this time around with the Shade Store on Fillmore street. If you look back from my last review (2019) you can see it was kind of a nightmare. But we decided to give them a second chance and they did a much better job. I ordered a total of 20 blinds - so a big order - and the sales person Niel Thein - was particularly exceptional. He really knows his job and knows the large variety of shades available - the types or rollers, the fabrics, all of it inside and out. One of the advantages to this company is the wide range of great quality shades compared to the other (slightly cheaper) on-line only companies. The installers were always punctual and courteous, we felt totally fine having them in our house. We had double blinds in some of the windows (solars behind blackouts) - the blackouts are motorized - and well hidden behind valances. The motorized feature is super expensive but honestly totally worth it. Now I'm not gonna lie - there were some goof ups in the process: one of the 20 blinds was wrong - but the store addressed it, and didn't charge to replace it. We also had an installer show up an hour before the scheduled time - but that was actually kind of better than late or no-show. There were literally zero - not one - technical issue with the measurement or install, as others have mentioned on Yelp. Overall, I will use them again - they definitely did way better in 2024 than in 2019. I think if I had used Yelp I would have been scared away - I see everyone's complaints here - but honestly I had a very good experience and excellent result with Neil and Shade store. read more

I left a voicemail message with Tami S to give feedback on the horrible customer service by the salesperson and customer service rep, and never heard back. The Shade Store doesn't really care about improving its processes and service. Also there are enough negative reviews, which all have common themes: unprofessional service, lack of quality control and major delays. These are red flags! Started out with one showroom, left because the manager was so rude. Went to another, they were nice but not able to do the project. 1 yr later, my very expensive job still isn't complete. They dropped the ball with project manager changes (and didn't event transition the project to anyone, I only found out when I called after the job took so long to and deadlines came and went -- found out only because I followed up to ask where my product was after paying huge deposits) and then they had to start over again, and they STILL got it wrong. They just couldn't manage a huge project -- maybe they should stick to small simple projects.) I worked them before on simple shades. They did OK there. Drapers, curtains, a different story. They weren't long enough, not wide enough, couldn't figure out hardware on triple window, etc. They have limitations and should have experts they can call in that do larger projects. read more

I wish we had gone elsewhere for our shades. We had the shade store install shades for our three kids' bedrooms. One of the shades was defective so they had to remake it which meant 2 more months of my son without shades. When it was time for the installation appointment, we received a call at the time they were supposed to arrive only to tell us that they still don't have the shade. I don't know why they didn't call ahead of time. We had to wait another month for the next appointment and are still without our shades. The shades that they did install do not function well. The cord only functions when held behind the shade (not in front) which at times is difficult for my kids to reach. If we could do it over again we would have paid up and gone elsewhere as this has turned into an ongoing hassle. read more
