I really had a very good experience this time around with the Shade Store on Fillmore street. If you look back from my last review (2019) you can see it was kind of a nightmare. But we decided to give them a second chance and they did a much better job. I ordered a total of 20 blinds - so a big order - and the sales person Niel Thein - was particularly exceptional. He really knows his job and knows the large variety of shades available - the types or rollers, the fabrics, all of it inside and out. One of the advantages to this company is the wide range of great quality shades compared to the other (slightly cheaper) on-line only companies. The installers were always punctual and courteous, we felt totally fine having them in our house. We had double blinds in some of the windows (solars behind blackouts) - the blackouts are motorized - and well hidden behind valances. The motorized feature is super expensive but honestly totally worth it. Now I'm not gonna lie - there were some goof ups in the process: one of the 20 blinds was wrong - but the store addressed it, and didn't charge to replace it. We also had an installer show up an hour before the scheduled time - but that was actually kind of better than late or no-show. There were literally zero - not one - technical issue with the measurement or install, as others have mentioned on Yelp. Overall, I will use them again - they definitely did way better in 2024 than in 2019. I think if I had used Yelp I would have been scared away - I see everyone's complaints here - but honestly I had a very good experience and excellent result with Neil and Shade store. read more

Started out with one showroom, left because the manager was so rude. Went to another, they were nice but not able to do the project. 1 yr later, my very expensive job still isn't complete. They dropped the ball with project manager changes (and didn't event transition the project to anyone, I only found out when I called after the job took so long to and deadlines came and went -- found out only because I followed up to ask where my product was after paying huge deposits) and then they had to start over again, and they STILL got it wrong. They just couldn't manage a huge project -- maybe they should stick to small simple projects.) I worked them before on simple shades. They did OK there. Drapers, curtains, a different story. They weren't long enough, not wide enough, couldn't figure out hardware on triple window, etc. They have limitations and should have experts they can call in that do larger projects. read more

I wish we had gone elsewhere for our shades. We had the shade store install shades for our three kids' bedrooms. One of the shades was defective so they had to remake it which meant 2 more months of my son without shades. When it was time for the installation appointment, we received a call at the time they were supposed to arrive only to tell us that they still don't have the shade. I don't know why they didn't call ahead of time. We had to wait another month for the next appointment and are still without our shades. The shades that they did install do not function well. The cord only functions when held behind the shade (not in front) which at times is difficult for my kids to reach. If we could do it over again we would have paid up and gone elsewhere as this has turned into an ongoing hassle. read more

I am a decorator over 30 years and have never had such an awful experience unprofessional as with this company. from the very beginning they got their is incorrect from the store details were incorrect had to review it several times then they neglected to tell us the fabric was back ordered so the entire project was two months late they had to refund us several thousands of dollars were inconvenienced and even at the very end when the last drapery was installed I forgot to bring the steamer so they're putting at $19,000 worth of drapes without finishing them I had to deal with upper management to get the job done I will never use them again and suggest you never try them read more

The interaction with this company was the worst I have ever run into in my entire life. I ordered four shades in August of 2022. It is now December 2022. Yup, four months and still not working. They mis-measured twice, sent out two replacement motors, missed one appointment and this has taken four months. I even wrote a letter to their CEO and never a response from anyone. This product can be bought by a dozen other companies, pick any one of them and you will be better off. You really learn how well a company operates when things go wrong. I ordered about $10K worth of blinds. The salesperson was patient but at the end of the day gave me wrong advice for the slider window. It took a lot of back and forth to get this figured out with another sales rep. In addition, one of the blinds came in wrinkled another was not hanging correctly and the installer got black marks on the white roller blinds to boot. Lots of back and forth--weeks going by and finally got things ordered. Recently, the installer was a no show-for some traffic reasons. But the automated system did not let me know and when I called customer service they had no clue. I wasted a whole day and I had to and yell to get their attention. Now one of the replacement blinds is also wrinkled. All and all I would never do business with them again. It is too much work and the quality is not consistent. There is also a design flaw with the solar shades--the metal piece can slip out at the bottom because it is not stitched in and the metal is sharp. I cut my hand. read more

When my cellular shades were originally ordered and installed, they fit correctly and worked great. Few years later, cords break or get so twisted they won't operate properly, so you call them for service. A technician will come out, take your blinds, allegedly send them for restringing, but instead lose them. Then The Shade Store, without letting you know that they lost them, will remake your blinds. But they will be the wrong ones. Wrong size, wrong window, wrong type. It's a good thing, they honor their warrantee, but when they've eliminated a color, or are in capable of finding your original order, or their technicians, lose the products that they take from your house, really makes you want to use somebody else. At this point, I would, rather they give me my money back, even though it's almost from eight years ago. Then I can buy my blinds from somebody else. read more

The Shade Store on Polk Street has an incredible selection of shades. Neil Thein answered all my questions, showed me alternatives for different functions, black out vs various degree of transparency, for example, as well as different options of materials, styles and companies. He was incredibly patient and gave me time to explore the different types and color samples without rushing me. In the end he let me take several samples home so that I could hold them up to my windows to get a better idea of how they would look in my home. He wrote up four sample invoices so that I could base my final choice on my budget. Bottom Line: Fair price point, quality customer service, simple enough install, FLAMEY shades my friends are jealous of. Customer Service: started with a video conference consultation with Sara to discuss needs. We had 16 floor to ceiling windows in need of shares, so decent project, but felt assured I'd be taken care of. Jason came by to do an in person measurement. He was professional, quick, and COVID safe. Install was completed by Jason and Kenneth, who finished in a couple hours. They even helped with the take away of my old blinds (I coordinated, they reimbursed me for the cost). Shades: Lets get to the FLAMEY stuff. They're roller solar shades, so they allow light in, but provide enough privacy for our needs. The roller aspect makes it easy up and down, but is made even easier with (1) motorized aspect that (2) can be controlled by my phone, Alexa, google home, or Siri. Simple flex that is sure to impress, is having friends over and casually saying, hey Siri, open the blinds. The ease of opening and closing changes what used to be a room where the shades were always down, to us enjoying the sun and privacy as we see fit. We were looking for top down, bottom up blackout shades. . They were more expensive than other options but there is a lifetime guarantee on the shades and Adam service was so professional we went with The Shade Store. When the shades came in they looked great and the installation team was equally professional but part of the order came in wrong. I thought oh no, I'm going to have to fight to get it right but when I called Adam he was courteous, acknowledged the mistake, and fixed it right away. The shade store advertise that their motorized shades are automated and will sell you a hub that does not work well if at all. Their app and system is buggy at best and simply is not ready for release. If you are looking for automation go elsewhere, they will take your money, run you around with attempts to make it work but it never will. Their customer service is horrific and slow, even their installation team will admit this. It feels like a great experience on the sales side before you put your money down, but if there is a problem they will not stand behind their product because they hide behind the excuse that these are custom products and non refundable. Terrible customer service. They repeatedly cancelled our in home measurements AFTER the scheduled time passed. Very unprofessional especially for a company trying to sell premium products. We intended to replace the window coverings in 4-5 room at an estimated cost of $15,000-20,000; however, the Shade Store did not care enough to show up to do the basics work. After multiple failed appointments we canceled all work and will take out business elsewhere. Something is very off with how this company does business. The funny thing is their social media/customer service person will post the exact same coined response to this review. Read any other negative reviews and see how the company responds. A++++ customer service is what makes Shade Store stand out. We purchased custom drapes in 2013. There were some measurement snafus that led to our custom drapes having to be remade twice. While time consuming and inconvenient, Shade Store recognized the error and fixed it with no cost for us. Since then, the drapes still look new. Whenever we've run into issues such as the track getting stuck or a hem coming undone, we've called the Shade Store. They've sent someone out to fix it, no questions. I did not end up ordering from them, because I was turned off by the ordering process and the salesperson I dealt with. I think the employees must work on commission because It seems that once you make contact with a salesperson and get assigned a "project number" for your potential order, you cannot switch to another salesperson. I disliked the employee with whom I was paired after I submitted an online request for a quote (we never met in person, only virtually, as the store she worked in was too far from my home). She came across as disinterested, tried to push the most expensive options on me, and made some ridiculous suggestions for my oddly-shaped windows. When I later called another (closer to my house) Shade Store location to try to find a better salesperson and ask to see some shades in person, the first saleswoman contacted me and said I had to go through her if I proceeded with the order. Run don't walk from this vendor. I spent $6K+ on shades/draperies for a client and Shade Store was a nightmare. Including shipping product that had holes in the fabric, cut the fabric wrong, and fabricated a roller shade which was too heavy for the window: so at least twice a year I receive a call from the client because the chain breaks! These people provide shoddy workmanship and their retail staff is clueless. The drapery installers I use now have unanimously agreed that their product is junk. read more

Insane that they couldn't coordinate picking up the shades from their own store before arriving. And now they said they don't have time before their next appointment. I'm not a big yelp reviewer, but I feel compelled to post to try to get the attention of upper management and save other potential customers the incredibly aggravating experience we have had. We used The Shade Store many years ago without any issues, but this time around has been a complete disaster. Too many examples to list, but the comedy of errors runs the gamut from multiple rounds of mismeasured shades, not sending two installers for staircase installs on multiple occasions despite advance reminders, flawed note taking systems, and overall state of organizational dysfunction. We've now had installers come back to our house four times - with need for a fifth - for what should've been a one-time install. Not to mention the many phone calls and months long delays to sort out our relatively simple order. Something is seriously wrong with internal management systems with this company and I cannot recommend them until a significant corporate overhaul occurs. read more

The first ask of customer service is to "prove" it's wrong by sending pictures and the agent on the phone seemed to assume it was my mistake first. I ordered curtains for two different windows with different dimensions yet received 2 pairs of exactly the same dimensions, both incorrect. *I learned that my double shade for my 2 large sliders DO NOT FIT and were measured incorrectly. So while 3 were put up and damaged my walls- they are WRONG. They cannot be used as they are off center according to the installer and were not measured appropriately for the space *I also noted that there is a large chip in my master bath where something fell. When I heard a crash and literally asked what fell, I was told that a screwdriver fell, but I was told it was in another space. Only upon the installer leaving and my husband and I looking at the space - trying to get to the inaccessible chain, did we note the chip in the paint (see photo) *Inaccessible chain. As noted in previous email- your designer NEVER told me I would have large PLASTIC devices stuck to my window- and certainly never told me I would have unsightly plastic hooks hung outside the shade on my newly painted walls. (see photo) Not only is the chain on the left of the large master bath window which is 100% inaccessible (unless one steps into the tub to get there) but the chains either hit the wall or hit the shade to avoid hitting the very large plastic tension device that was installed without my knowLEDGE. *My husband cannot even access the back shade of the double shade in the master bedroom windows, because the chain is so tight and it will surely damage the wall/shade or both. *The chains are extremely difficult to navigate and are on all windows except those that I motorized- which again were measured incorrectly and now sit unfinished and will leave my walls damaged *After 7 1/2 hours sitting in my home waiting- I have several rooms left uninstalled- non-functional windows (unless I opt to damage my walls or shade- went to the shade store for my renovation because I was told I would have a "higher end" experience with product and service than other much less expensive brands like 3 Day Blinds, etc. I was told the appointment would take 4 hours. I have 28 windows, they sent one person. I wanted cordless shades for the windows where I didn't opt for motorized. Consultant talked me into "continuous loop chain" for raising and lowering shades. HORRIBLE. The installation person told me my complaints are common among their customers: The chain is VERY difficult to maneuver, and you must tug extremely hard to get the shade up and down. The shade itself hits the mechanism that the chain is in, and it is very cumbersome and unsightly. I had better experience/product with Costco @ rental properties. I am extraordinarily disappointed that the product is sub par, the appointment is lasting the entire day and I am not done/mismeasured product/non-functioning product. My wall got chipped in my master bath, and the non-functional chain was put on the left side where it is 100% inaccessible. Save your money and go for another brand in my opinion. read more

At the start of our two unit building renovation in San Francisco, we wandered into the Shade Store to get an in person idea for what we wanted. Neil worked with us to determine how to choose the drapes that would fit with the right amount of privacy without losing the light with our front two rooms, walking us through the many options that can easily become overwhelming! He then had someone come to our home to measure the spaces and our drapes were delivered well before our renovation finished. No problem, Neil remembered us months after we were finally ready for installation. And he was able to quickly schedule the installer. Along with the long renovation, our painters had pulled off the hardware for our drapes. The installer fixed the hardware and hung the drapes per specs. Needless to say the drapes added the final perfect touch to our renovated space. The window treatments are well priced for the very high quality and white glove service we received at every step. There should be a zero starts option. This company is a total scam. Placed a $10K+ order, which had to be replaced twice due to their manufacturing company and installers not being able to figure out the measurements. One set of roller shades came in and it turns out those can't roll both ways and now those shades don't close all the way due to the opening mechanism of our windows, which was discussed several times during the design phase and all shades were supposed to be mounted a certain way to avoid this exact issue. Other roman shades came in broken and two of them fell on my head while I tried to close them. Turns out the installers used short screws to install these vs the 4 inch screws recommended... Did not even get an apology from The Shade Store rep despite having this on video thanks to the nursery's baby cam. Most shades were the wrong measurement (with some about 2in shorter than my window!) and were installed very poorly (inside mount not flush with the wall and all windows unevenly installed). They came to remove all the window shades from my house 3 weeks ago and I still don't have a refund, so I am out $10K+ and I have no window treatments. Such a shame as they have beautiful fabrics, but horrible execution and bad customer service all around. Good luck if you choose to order from them! read more
