We've always driven by this spot, so after a recommendation from someone we know, we decided to pay them a visit for dinner service recently. I kept going back and forth on what I wanted to rate this place, but I think 3 stars fits right. No apps were ordered, but I got the fried flounder and shrimp plate with the sweet potato casserole and fries. My wife got the pecan salmon dish (she swapped out the chicken fyi) & her sides were the same casserole and Mac n cheese. Starting with hers, the salmon was perfect....crispy skin that was seasoned very well. It didn't need the glaze that came with it honestly. Was also moist....honestly, it was the best thing we ate all night after I got a taste myself. For mines, the shrimp breader was tasty and the shrimp was cooked pretty decently...wasn't tough or overcooked. The flounder left alot to be desired. It was cooked quite well, but there wasn't any breader or seasoning for that matter.....no flavor at all. Their tartar sauce was decent too...it did taste like it may have been pre packaged, but it was good. The sweet potato casserole wasn't a casserole at all. It was basically sweet potato mash. Which isn't terrible and it tasted ok. However, I was expecting something completely different so that was a letdown. Their fries were good, however.....had some sort of seasoning salt flavor to them and they were crispy. My wife wasn't too fond of the Mac n cheese. In her words, it tasted like "microwaved pasta with cheese tossed on top". I didn't try it since I'm picky about Mac n cheese myself. I barely order it off anyone's menu so I dodged another disappointment with that one. Regarding the service, our waitress was ok. Nothing that honestly stands out. She was nice, but it seemed their whole wait staff may have been busy since it was dinner rush time. Their prices were decent too, esp in this day and age. All in all, if we do go back, I'd try different things. The place was packed and it appeared everyone was somewhat satisfied with their food. There wasn't much of an ambiance there. The place was pretty full....seemed more of a family style restaurant....it was also kinda cool how they had some sort of video games and stuff in a side room location. I'm not sure if they'll be added to the rotation, but we may consider them again just based on the salmon alone. read more

Decided to check this place out for lunch on a Saturday during errands. Great find. Had an every server is your server vibe, not sure if that is always the case or if we just came during a training shift. We were in the mood for a burger and decided to try out some of their unique creations. I had the Little Johnny's with fried pimento cheese and bacon. My mom has the Black Jack Burger. We were both hesitant about sour cream on a burger but it turned out to be pretty close to a taco salad on a burger which was great. The bacon on my burger had the perfect crispiness. So, I have heard about this place before, but never stopped by. It was my GF's birthday and she was wanting Asian food, but Mizu happened to be closed, and this place is a stone's throw from Mizu, in fact it is in the same shopping center as Mizu. We did have to end up waiting 10-15 mins for a table, but they were very busy, and they were working hard to get lots of people sat down and served, so no worries here, they were efficient and orderly. While I am sorry that my girlfriend did not get the Asian she wanted on her birthday, we are all glad that was stopped at The Sherwood, the food was incredible, the service was good, and the atmosphere was nice, and for 3 people, all with sweet tea of a soda to drink, got out of there for under $60 (not including tip). I got the chicken fried steak, my partner got the Rueben, and my mother got the hamburger steak, she does not even really care for mushrooms, but she was eating those up as she consumed her poor man's steak. I am also excited that this joint is fairly local and close to me! It was elevated comfort food, and everyone loves that, and I will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu out! read more

I have been going to the Sherwood off and on since it opened. The food is good and the atmosphere is pleasant. But recently I've noticed a drop off in the service. Today I stopped in and was told to sit in any booth I wanted. I asked the young man who brought me a menu to take my order. He responded by saying I don't wait this table and walked off. I waited for several minutes no one showed up to help me so I left. This isn't a one time experience for me so I hope the owners take note and address the service concerns. read more

We visited on a Monday evening and were immediately given a table. The place was decorated like a typical restaurant but was very clean. Our waitress immediately got our drink orders and offered us bread service. The bread was delicious. I opted to have the Monday special of Chicken Parm and a salad and was not disappointed. Bottom line: The Sherwood restaurant gave a solid 3.5 star visit but not feeling 4 for this time. Mixed service experience, but ended on a positive. The Comfort Fried Steak did the trick for a diner/family restaurant entree, it was good but not exceptional, and the sides seem a bit different to me. With such a diverse menu, I would probably pick another item to experience in any future visits. The Deets: I had a chance to try The Sherwood restaurant in Sherwood Plaza shopping center with my family which had tried it recently themselves. Hitting them mid to late afternoon during midweek, we were actually the only table being served then. Inside is a nice elevated diner/family restaurant atmosphere with a bar/TV area towards the back of the seating area. Once seated, we were given menus and drink orders were taken. The staff member at this point gave adequate service but did not appear to be overly enthusiastic to have us at the restaurant. Our orders were taken and placed into the kitchen, in which I had decided to go with the Comfort Fried Steak served "over mashed potatoes and topped with a bacon gravy and served with one side" as the menu describes, with the side chosen as creamed corn. This dish when brought out looked a nice portion and had a good country fried steak with gravy flavor. The majority of the dish was a huge portion of mashed potatoes under the fried steak, which had left skin/peel left in. The mashed potatoes were pretty solid in texture and not as whipped smooth, plus the sheer amount was a bit much to tackle after a pretty generous fried steak with gravy serving. The texture of the creamed corn was not like I had before, as all corn kernels seem to be mashed/busted (?blended?) but tasted OK. My meal here cured the midday hunger but I think I might try one of the burgers or other entree choices on any return visits in the future. The young gentleman (different than the staff member we started with) that brought out our meals and kept our drinks topped was very positive and helpful, it was very appreciated. In all, I feel like this visit was a 3.5 star one and hoping to try more of their variety of selections from the menu in other visits. read more

I never knew this restaurant was here until a friend suggested it. I hate that I've missed it all these years. I had the Maui Lucas. The chicken was perfectly cooked. The teriyaki sauce was light and served in just the right proportion. The pineapple salsa was outstanding. The rice and asparagus were fantastic. This was the best restaurant meal I've had in a long time. Our server was attentive without being intrusive. The atmosphere was that of an upscale deli. The rest of the menu looked good. I don't know what they've done differently but keep doing it. The last time I tried The Sherwood it was not very notable. The food was just OK and our service was not great. We pretty much wrote off this place. But, after a late evening grocery run in the same shopping center we were starving and decided to try again and I'm so happy we did! The Sherwood is a casual bar and grill inside of a strip center. It has a nice size dining room and some outdoor seating too. It would definitely accommodate large parties if needed. Our server was super sweet! She was so friendly and attentive during our whole meal. I ordered the Ground Beef Steak with a side salad and onion rings. My husband got the blackened flounder with a side salad and asparagus. Our food came out quickly right after we finished our salads. My hamburger steak was cooked perfectly medium just as I asked and was juicy and tender. It had that great charred flavor too that I love. My onion rings were thin, crispy and fresh from the fryer. Everything was delicious! The Sherwood has definitely redeemed itself in my book and I'll be back for more. read more

Had a Christmas Dinner here tonight. Enjoyed myself in conversation so much that I almost did not take pictures. I love coming here especially after they sort of merged with the cooking staff from Oso Eats. The menu changed and got even better. They have options for everyone, from salads & wraps, to burgers & Main Chef dishes. I love their Pecan Chicken as well as the Madeira Chicken with mushrooms. However today I cheated on my diet and went with the Country Fried steak. It is a well coated and fried steak that does not need much else. It sits on some creamy mashed potatoes and topped off with a bacon gravy that's not too watery or too thick. It is the right consistency and they don't smother it, it's just enough so that you can enjoy the actual steak. You get your Choice of side, I went with asparagus so I could convince myself that I was eating healthy. They also have a great selection of desserts. I got a slice of carrot cake that looked like it was on steroids, definitely it good for my diet. I I g was great, cake was a tad dry and I could have used more nuts in.it, my preference. My buddy got the Buckey which looked amazing and was probably about a million calories. He loved it and I trust his word. The ambience is casual family style with plenty of seating. There is also a bar towards the rear with a few TVs to catch sports. I love coming here and have loved everything I have ever ordered. It's a strip mall so plenty of parking. Staff is always on point with taking g orders and getting them right, drinks filled and all with a smile. Love this family restaurant with reasonable prices. Go to place for when I want a Veggie Roll or Salmon meal. Love the decor and ambiance here! It feels comfortable and spacious. They have the outdoor seating when fair weather permits, a kids place for games and fun, as well as a private room for bigger, private celebrations! The service no matter who is on the floor is always friendly and attentive. I've never had an uncomfortable experience here! This is another restaurant that I've visited several times but have not updated my review. This for me is a CBNC spot - Close But No Cigar. It is one of those inexplicable places were everything looks good at first - ambiance, food, service - but at the end of the meal, something seems to be missing. It just doesn't close the deal like Oso Eats, it's sister restaurant always seemed to do! The last meal I had here exemplifies what I mean I ordered their Club sandwich. My first reaction when it was brought to the table was - WOW! It was huge and looked very nice. So big that trying to eat it was a job in itself You could not take a bite of the entire sandwich. You were reduced to chewing off mouthfuls were you could- not a good way to eat a club sandwich which is all about the ingredients coming together as you eat it. I would like to begin by stating that I want this review to be constructive criticism. Absolutely, the Sherwood Restaurant has an ample menu with above average table fare, and with selections that should satisfy most cravings. However, my wife and I have issues with the wait staff. We are friendly, outgoing, and tip well, yet our experiences with the wait staff have been hit and miss: mostly miss. With only two exceptions, our servers appear to be "just going through the motions." They are robotic in nature and do not engage with the patrons. To us, 50% of the dining experience is our interaction with the wait staff and apparently the wait staff at the Sherwood are not interested in this social norm. Very home-y and welcoming inside with tasty food and great service as well! There's a great variety of options on the menu and a great kids menu. I went with the blackjack burger but instead of sour cream (not a fan) I asked for guacamole and it was SO good. I loved that the burger itself was blackened and the flavorings of the toppings together worked perfectly. My husband got Ari blue burger which was delicious as well; the sweetness of the onions with the savory from the blue cheese worked so well together. I loved the fries I got as my side! My daughter Tory the grilled cheese which was made with a hamburger bun which I love when places do that. there was also a variety of sides for the kids meal too. My daughter also absolutely loved that her meal came with ice cream haha and for the price all our portions were great! This place was busy with a good vibe of bustling activity. They had so many food options it was a little hard to pick. I ended up getting the Madeira Chicken with a side of asparagus and mashed potatoes, which was very tasty. We had a large party and they had a side room to accommodate us, which was nice and gave us plenty of space. The waitress was very nice and friendly. Everyone in our group seemed to enjoy their dish, from pecan chicken, to flounder, ribs, a Reuben, and even a "taste of Mexico ". We were seated in a semi private room so easy to hear the various conversations. The menu is varied with enough choices to accommodate most people. My dinner was quite good. My Thai shrimp appetizer was very good, lightly fried shrimp w a semi sweet sauce. The only down side was it came out at the same time as my entre so you may want to tell the waiter to bring app first. I ordered the ribeye steak, medium with too many good sides to choose from so l managed to pick 2 that you are allowed with a meal, sweet potato casserole and broccoli. Everything was done to perfection although the broccoli was bland but perfectly cooked and steak was a perfect medium! All for $25. They serve beer and wine along w regular soft drinks, tea and even pink lemonade. On the kind of day when you go grocery shopping but don't purchase anything that you can actually prepare in time for dinner that night, a casual place like this is a good move. The Sherwood is about two minutes away from our home and we still hadn't tried it in about six months of living here so while trying to figure out something quick and affordable, we landed here. We got the pimento cheese burger which has fried pimento cheese balls on top of a burger patty with bacon. For the side we chose onion rings and were surprised and a bit disappointed to receive onion straws, while still a "fried onion product" it just doesn't hit quite the same. The burger was good though, greasy, flavorful, bottom bun reduced to a soggy mass from the drippings- but in a good way. We also got the philly cheese steak sandwich, which was a bit light on the steak but with a generous amount of mushrooms. This was tasty and fell in the "acceptable" category. Certainly not like you'd get in philly, but also not bad when you're looking to just fill your tummy and keep it moving. With this, we chose basic fries which were the lightly breaded variety, and received a fairly small portion of them, slightly undercooked and limp. Finally we split an order of Buffalo wings which we were surprised to see looked quite naked. While there was a nice flavor to them and they were cooked well, they were more of a Buffalo seasoned than Buffalo sauced which is not quite what we were looking for. These would also fall under the category of "acceptable" but definitely not crave worthy. This restaurants website does do themselves the disservice of having some very beautiful and impressive food pictures (like the wings, pictured glistening with sauce) that does not represent the product that you will actually receive, unless perhaps this was a slightly off night. So the anticipation was high but did not live up to their representation. While everything was 'okay', I feel the food from this place would fall under the category of a greasy spoon or dive bar kind of thing, all pretty decent, not overly impressive, low frills but overall satisfying if you're looking for a quick affordable meal. If you go in with those expectations I think you will be pretty satisfied. They do offer some more pricey menu items like a ribeye steak but I don't know if I would use my ribeye money there after trying their more basic fare, that may be setting oneself up for a bit of a bigger disappointment. read more

I live nearby Sherwood as of this review, so I figured I would come up with an excuse to give them a try at some point! I went in recently for some takeout, not really knowing what to expect. I will say the food was fair but with potential for improvement. We ordered online via their website (they use chow now for their online order fulfillment), and our order was accurate and ready at the time designated. The interior looks pretty basic. Clean but a bit outdated. The outside patio area looks nice, and I would probably look to sit out there if we were dining in. There was no one up front at the host area to greet me when I walked in, and I waited several minutes up front before finally walking back to the bar area to find someone to assist me. This included more than one server looking at me and walking by ignoring me. Once I informed the gentleman behind the bar that I was there to pick up an online order, he was friendly and promptly went to the back to retrieve my order. I had to laugh though because he had me go back to the host-free host area up front to wait. The order was ready though, and so I went on my merry way. Quality of food for the takeout was overall good. It had a short commute and didn't suffer too much. We got Buffalo wings, which were crispy and nicely prepared, but they lacked sauce completely and were pretty much naked. Not what I expected. I also got the pimento cheeseburger, which I ordered medium rare and received well. I ordered this with onion rings, but their conception of onion rings is apparently onion straws. Refer to my included pic and you'll see what I mean. Again, not what I expected. The burger tasted good though, despite being overcooked, and it was seasoned nicely. I also got a Philly cheesesteak because why not!? Fries were fine, and the cheesesteak was actually better than I expected. Certainly nowhere near the best cheesesteak I've ever had, but it was fair to midland. That exceeded my expectations since I honestly anticipated it to not be good. Sherwood has potential. Nothing was bad by any means, but with so many other options for pub food, they need to step up their game some to stand out more. read more

Finally got around to visiting this Winston Salem staple after hearing great things about it. After having a yummy lunch there I have to agree! We sat outside and were seated in about 20 minutes - not bad for the Saturday lunch rush. It's very reminiscent of the quintessential small town family restaurant complete with an arcade in the back which boasts a super awesome pinball machine! We started out with the wings which were shockingly some of the best we've had here in Winston. They were not soggy at all just crispy and perfectly sauced! I got the chicken Madeira with pasta instead of mashed potatoes which I regretted instantly the moment I tried them off my boyfriends plate. He also got the Mac and cheese as his second side which was good. My chicken was delicious and I loved the sauce I just wished there was more of it but still very good!
