Valentines diner for two, nice dinner. Atmosphere was, well, a bar, but nice: same owners as The Branch in Centralia. We enjoyed our food and will come back to try the regular menu! EDIT: I removed one star because while the food was very good, and the kitchen staff worked heroically on a busy night, the service was scattered. How this could be with relatively few tables and a prix fix menu with only two choices for an entree is perplexing. Restaurants live or die by two things. 1. Quality of the food and 2. Popped in just before close on a saturday evening and was blown away by this place. I absolutely love the rustic nostalgic mahogany ambiance, but the food really nailed it. We've lived in Chehalis for 10 years, how have I never found this place? Coolest bar, and raddest historical looking pub in Chehalis or Centralia. Quiet place, stopped in for an early dinner based on reviews. We tried the baseball cut steak and the New York. Both came with wonderful sauces and were cooked well. Dessert was a chocolate pot de creme with a sneaky, delicious warmth to it and a well made crème brûlée. Will make it a point to stop in if we are in the area again. read more

A lovely, old fashioned bar. I think the poor bartender/waitress/cook was taken aback when 8 of us came in at once but she rose to the occasion beautifully. Everything we had was very good. My only complaint is the menu. There are 4 or 5 different hamburgers but no descriptions and the names tell you nothing. Wow. Such a disappointment.... I always say Yelpers never lie, but I feel very misled... 1. Saturday night, 6:30, less than half full...that should have told us something. 2. Have a seat guys, it will be a little while til we can get to you. (One woman waiting and tending bar, training another, and the cook... that's all... did I mention it's a Saturday night?) 3. The "beer list" was pitiful. They have a gorgeous mahogany bar. On tap were two beers from Dick's (amber and porter), Stella, and Elysian Space Dust. Nothing interesting on the bottle list either. Really?? We both had the Dick's porter which is the only porter I have had that I can see through... tastes okay though. 4. The food was atrocious. He ordered the voodoo prawns. Looked like a $6 cafeteria plate. Basically shrimp (not prawns) with buffalo sauce on white rice, with a garnish of basil and slice of lemon. Buffalo with lemon and basil?? No sour cream, as in the description, but why would there be sour cream anyway??? Just plain white rice, like the boil in bag kind. But, he said it tasted "ok" and he was hungry so he ate it. I had the cornmeal catfish. It was a soggy disgusting slab of mushiness. And who serves pesto with catfish?? It was GROSS. It was served with "seasonal vegetables" - steamed, flavorless mushy piece of broccoli, two slices of carrot and 4 small slices of some other root vegetables. Also, it came with a "shire cake" which I think was like zucchini latke. Zero flavor and also mushy. I didn't even eat half of my food. 5. Waitress came and took our plates with no comment or question about the food left on my plate. When she brought the check, my husband volunteered that this was our worst food experience in years (since Lake Charles, LA in 2016). She said she was sorry and took the bill away and returned with a reduced total. So, good on her (that's why it is 2 stars and not 1). I had high expectations based on the reviews of this restaurant and its "sister" The Branch. God help Chehalis if those are the best restaurants in town. Will try the brewery next time. read more

It's been a few years since I have had dinner here. After hearing from more than one person raving about the new chef and changed menu we decided to go. We met some friends for dinner and cocktails. The duck breast was probably the best I have ever had. If you like steak, the sirloin is fantastic with a demi glacé. We will be going back soon because we want to try some of the other options. What I really needed was a place where I could sit in a corner for 4 hours and work. And, I got it at The Shire. I stumbled onto the The Shire in a bit of a huff because the place I intended to go to work didn't actually have wireless. So, I wandered around the neighborhood a bit hoping, hoping ... and my walk was rewarded. And, they responded to my grumpiness with equal grumpiness. The truth was, the service was perfect ... consistent enough that I didn't feel totally neglected, but not hovering. I also got a burger the size of a Hobit. This is definitely a place to eat a sandwich with a knife and fork, European style. And, the burger wasn't just a show piece. It was a for real, great burger. read more

I posted this somewhere else as well, as it was a surprisingly rude experience. I live in Lacey, been wanting to try The Shire for a long time. Love the name, huge LOTR fan. We got there right about 7:30 on the nose, walked in. A guy working there said to me "we're not taking anymore tables tonight" in a hurried, and rude tone. I asked him if we could just order desert, so we wouldn't trouble the kitchen. He said "no", and kept walking. wow...okay. Oh well, been wanting to try The Shire, and see the place. Since I'm already there I was just looking at the decor for a moment before leaving. A woman walks by and says "sir, we can't take anymore tables tonight", I started to tell her I was already told and just taking a quick look before leaving when the guy says to her "I already told them we're not taking anymore tables". The girl rolls her eyes at me.. WTH?? I understand if the kitchen cannot take anymore (but the place was only about half full), but they were very rude and dismissive about it. Walked in at 7:00 on a Saturday night. We were literally the only customers. It was our first and last time at this place. The staff was friendly and great. Our problem was with the prices. I bet it would be stellar on a night of live music. Casual in a comfortable way that immediately put us at ease. Quirky servers which fit our style perfectly. My daughter had the Curry Mussels and I had the Jambalaya. The menu was a great diverse selection. Not too many options to overwelm but enough choices to fit all 3 of us. My husband and I just brought our son into The Shire for a drink. He flew into town to surprise us for his 22nd birthday. It's 7:30pm on Saturday night. Upon walking in we were greeted by the waitress who let us know they didn't have any available tables (even though they were mostly vacant). Since we had just eaten dinner, we let her know we just wanted to sit at the bar for a drink, and she replied with, "We don't have ANYTHING available." Her manner was not polite or respectful at all. The Shire is open until 11pm on Saturday night. This whole interaction occurred in less than 30 seconds. We left disappointed and walked across the street to Mackinaws Curious Bar, where we had just eaten. We had excellent service and left the server a $50 tip. Wow! We will never visit The Shire again. My husband, my son and I are all Air Force veterans with a combined service of 55 years. All people deserve to be treated with respect. Sometimes you just don't know who you might insult. read more

Being a restaurant chef/owner myself, I can truly appreciate a chef who can produce a menu like this out of a hobbit sized kitchen like they have at the shire, he I a true magician. We were there on New Year's Eve the food, service, and atmosphere were absolutely impeccable. Joel the owner was our waiter so that may have added to the experience, because he new every aspect of the food preparation and operation and we ask a lot of questions. We shared the smoked pheasant and cheese plate appetizer then crab stuffed halibut, fantastic. Good wine and beer list. This place is pretty cool, service was good, the bar is big, incredible woodwork... But the food is crap! OMG, definitely not worth what we paid. I was visiting the area and the reviews here on yelp were pretty high. The bar can be somewhat difficult to find. It's nestled between a couple of shops. Street parking is available, I'm not sure if they have a parking lot. The first thing you see is the great big bar with interesting woodwork and large mirrors. The dining area is long and skinny, seems to have a lot of unused space. We stopped in for lunch, my friend and I both got the Philly cheese and broccoli soup. The bread was stale, cheese was lacking, the meat was flavorless, but more importantly, the soup was canned and tasted like the metal it came in.. blah! For the most part, I trust the yelp reviews. However this seems to be more of a local favorite. Not necessarily a place you want to stop in if you're looking for a four or five star meal! I gave two stars because the bar is pretty cool, the space is big, and the staff had great customer service.. If I'm ever in the area, I'll know it's not worth it to stop in! read more

On my birthday, on the way home from hiking the Ape Caves, my husband and I stopped at The Shire for dinner in Chehalis with our brother, sister in law, and their two kids (7 and 9). It turned out to be a really great hidden gem! We never would've noticed or tried it without Yelp. They had wonderful food, from the delicious, fresh starter salads to the wonderfully prepared entrees, to the amazing fresh-brewed "perfect" iced tea, to the really great local microbrews! My b-i-l and I ordered wild sockeye salmon, and were delighted with the large portion, and the fact that it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Husband got the coconut crusted halibut - again, a generous portion that was super tasty! Nephews each got a BBQ Chicken quesadilla - appetizer portions that turned out to be more than enough for their dinner. This is NOT your typical bar food. We talked about it for 15 minutes after we left - and I decided that after making it up the 8-foot wall in the pitch-black lava tube earier that day, the dinner was the best part of my birthday! read more

This is a great bar and restaurant. Owner Joel Wall took over the location in 2003, and created a local spot that makes you feel at home. The food is unpretentious, high quality, and more than satisfying -- clearly the cooks are attentive to detail. The bartenders know how to make their drinks. Open mic is Tuesdays, if you're adventurous. I went to high school in Chehalis and wish the Shire was around in the late 90's/ early 2000's -- at least it's around now! The only problem with The Shire is that the owner Joel is more of a Packers fan than a Seahawks fan. Give him heck, and he'll be good to you. At least he is compassionate and merciful toward our sea chickens. Anyway, even though the Oly Club in Centralia is an institution in the twin cities, The Shire is by far my personal preference -- way more chill, low-key, my-kind-of-place.
