It's one thing if there's a staple menu and a seasonal menu, but when you have things listed, but don't have one thing after another, after another, I just wish they'd been a little more transparent. We were originally planning to eat somewhere else, but after driving by The Shrimp Shack in the morning on the way to Rosario Beach, we decided to change our plans. Fresh local shrimp and crab? That sounds right up our alley. It wasn't open yet during our first pass, so we decided to get lunch here after doing a bit of exploring and hiking. When we made it back at noon, there was a huge line waiting to order. We found the main parking lot right in front to be far too cramped and hectic - the parking spaces are angled but there's not enough room to turn around, so to leave, we had to reverse out the entire way. There's plenty of parking elsewhere on the property that seems much easier to access. It took us about 20 minutes in line before we got to the front and at that point, they had a sign up stating that it would take 20-30 min to prepare the food. I wish they had that sign up where the line starts instead of the endpoint! The clam chowder we ordered came out immediately while the fried food ended up taking over 40 minutes. Their estimates were definitely off. In terms of seating, there's a large covered patio that was extremely crowded and full the entire time we were there. On an almost 90 degree day, we ended up sitting at one of the tables right outside the covered area that had a sliver of shade to keep us cool Clam Chowder Cup ($7.25 w/ Meal) - The Shrimp Shack serves an exceptionally thick clam chowder with a heavy roux base contributing to a certain goopy quality in the chowder. It's so dense that we stuck a spoon right in the center and it stood upright without any inclination to tip over. Inside, there's a mix of carrot, celery, and potato, all with some texture still, tender but not falling apart. There's a ton of herbs, then cleanly cut and cleaned clam. They are not skimpy with the clams, but I wouldn't call them generous either. The broth displays a good clam-forward flavor mixed with plenty of herbs. It's not too salty and has a good seasoning level, giving a rich and peppery flavor. Now unfortunately, there's a major issue with the clam chowder - throughout the soup, there were clumps of flour marring the otherwise creamy texture. They definitely have some technique driven issues in their kitchen. At least there wasn't any taste of raw flour. (3/5) Dungeness Crab Cake Burger (Market Price, $24) - Since I'm not a huge fan of shrimp, I went with the crab cake, which based on the market price charged, I assume is made in house with fresh crab. The burger overall is larger than typical, as they use a bun bigger than the average commercial bun. It's toasted unevenly - my top slice was almost blackened, buttery and very crunchy. The bottom was rather wan. They slather a bunch of tarter sauce on both sides. It's creamy and slightly tangy from the pickle relish. There's a single lettuce leaf, a slice of tomato, and some grilled onions adding some slight sweetness. In the center is a large and tender fried crab cake. It isn't dense and instead is soft and almost falls apart since the crab meat is pulled apart and loose. There's a surprising amount of crab meat - there's some filler, but not a ton as with commercial crab cakes. The crab cake by itself is actually pretty good (although, I did find a couple of pieces of crab shell mixed in). The problem is when it's with the rest of the ingredients in the sandwich. The predominant flavor is the tarter sauce and the predominant texture is the crunch from the top burger bun. It all makes for a sandwich where I could not get a single hint of crab flavor. The burger comes with fries which are pretty normal commercial battered fries. They are fried just a tad less than required to get them perfectly fluffy, so they are on the harder side of tender. They aren't salted too much. (3/5) By the time we left, the wait time had increased to one hour plus. This place is not worth the wait in my opinion. Another major issue they have is with their point of sale system. Per a sign on their door: "Credit and Debit card transactions have a 3.75% fee". I paid with cash and the receipt was really weird. On top of not paying the 3.75% fee, I also got an additional 2.4% cash discount. At least, I think. The receipt is confusing enough that I honestly have no idea what they did. They charged $24.90 for the crab cake instead of $24 and $6.73 for the chowder instead of $7.25. Then they gave a cash discount of $1.14. See picture. We've come to the area a few times now and both times we had someone ask us if we've tried the shrimp shack. Now we have! Open seating so just grab yourself a table. There are 2 lines to order. One for the grill which is the menu stuff. The other for your bags of shrimp. When we were there, the shrimp line was the longest. My wife and I split up so we could try both. The Grill: we just got a bunch of stuff to share Fish Burger (4): This was pretty good. Soft bun. Tender fish. Their fries are really crispy. Solid sando. Fish n Chips (4): They fry stuff really well and their fish is fresh. Fish was flaky. Did need the tartar sauce but it was still good. Clam Chowder Bread Bowl (4): Decent. Bread bowl was good but nothing spectacular. Chowder had some good sized clams and was creamy. The Shrimp (4): We love the shrimp trucks in Hawaii and our friends sort of hyped us up with that in mind. When we got to the front, we really didn't know what to order. We got what most people seemed to be getting. Just a combo of small and medium shrimp. All the shrimp is cooked in saltwater. So you need to peel them. They were fresh and tasty. A little sweet even. It's work though. If you don't like peeling shrimp, then might not be as good as the hype. I personally didn't think the small shrimp was worth the effort cause they were TAI NEE! Perfect sunny day to drive up to Whidbey Island. A short drive from Deception Pass is this popular shack with outdoor seating. We've been coming to this place for years and it never disappoints. In fact, it seems it's even getting better. The menu is quite extensive, with game choices (alligator meat), as well. But we come here for boiled Coons Stripe Shrimps. They're small, but big in flavor. We also had a blue crab burger and oyster burger. Both are have generous amount of oysters and soft shell crab. The buns are soft and the dressing in each are good. They both come with fries, which are crispy and seasoned well. The tent holds a couple of benches and it feels like being in a picnic. There are honey buckets, with outdoor sinks. Came here on a Saturday morning and the line was pretty long, we ended up waiting about 25 mins in the shrimp line to buy some cooked shrimp by the pound. If you want hot foods, there is a separate line on the left that is much shorter. The line to the right is only for shrimp by the pound. Upon ordering we had to wait 20 mins extra for our fried foods. We ordered the calamari and the captains plate. The food was crispy, tasty and fresh! This was my first time trying an oyster burger (~$26) and despite it being one of the most expensive burgers I've paid for, I loved it! They put a lot of oysters in the "pattie" and the portion sizes were pretty big. I was stuffed by the end of it. I also really like their fries; they were perfectly crispy. Disappointing experience, especially for the price We were really excited to try Shrimp Shack in Anacortes given all the hype, but unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. The "colossal shrimp" was a letdown -- the batter was under-seasoned, lacked salt, and was soggy to the point that it was falling off the shrimp. The same issue carried over to the fish and chips. We actually left pieces of both because it just wasn't enjoyable. The clam chowder was also surprising... it had little to no clams, which was disappointing. For about $80 (small clam chowder, shrimp, and fish), we expected much better quality. Honestly, the fries were the best part of the meal. Today we decided to go here for the fresh shrimp! When we got there, the shrimp didn't arrive til 2 (we got there at 12) so we decided on getting some other items first. For some reason I thought it would've be that good because it wasn't too expensive and oysters are usually pricey (I was expecting a few oysters only) but there was so many deep fried oysters in it. I do wish the oysters were crispier though. But the flavor was there. Fresh veggies and soft bun! Fries were crispy and they made sure to give lots of ketchup packets! 2 hours later and I got 3 pounds of the mix shrimp. The only reason I gave it 4 stars out of 5 was because how tiny the shrimp was. Yes it was supposed to be a mixture but it was so hard to eat the shrimp when it was too tiny. I feel like 90% of the bag were really tiny shrimps. Some even had like little tiny things attached to it, but it didn't gross me out because I'm aware of those things. Other than that, it was prepared amazing, wasn't over cooked at all. The shrimp was super sweet! One thing I do recommend is bringing your own crackers sauce or soy sauce, it was so good dipped in crack sauce. We even brought our own disposable plates. The service provided by the cashier later was AMAZING! She was so nice and patient. Outdoor seating but didn't have issues finding seating at all (on a weekday) but weekend is probably horrible. They have restroom here as well, but it is portable. The parking could get bad so make sure to be aware of that. There is a nice seating area next to the storefront, but we wanted to have our Shrimp Shack lunch right by Deception Pass. For lunch, we ordered the Halibut Fish n Chips and the Oyster Burger. I love the Halibut as it was freshly caught and cooked, and I loved how well the lemon and tartar sauce paired with the fried halibut. The fresh-caught shrimp was an excellent appetizer as well! Why the 3 stars? The fries and halibut were noticeably soggy. This is because our order had been sitting at the counter at Shrimp Shack for a while, yet I had to call a worker over to ask if our food was ready. I waited ~30 minutes, and I still have no clue how long our food has been ready and sitting there. The worker apologized since they were busy and understaffed. Considering my lunch order went over $50, not including the shrimp, I expected better. Despite the criticism, however, I definitely will come back here the next time I go to Anacortes/Deception Pass. We stopped here on the way back to Seattle from the San Juans ferry. It is pretty close by. Unfortunately we came during a off season for shrimp. We ordered a dungeness and oyster burger. The food came out quick and service was good. The dungenss burger lacked flavor but the burger was fried to perfection. The show stopper was definitely the oyster burger with how it was not too greasy and crisp filled with flavor. I definitely would come back some day if I am in the area for a quick grab and go. I think the ratings aren't as high because people don't know what to order. Let me simplify things for you: 1.) get the #1 order which is the oyster burger or get the order of 6 fried oysters. 2.) go to the separate line to buy fresh shrimp. Yes, fresh shrimp. Get the medium-large ones for $15/pound. You get a whole bag of fresh shrimp and it tastes seriously out of this world amazing and fresh. 3.) don't pay with a credit card. It's an extra 3.5%!!! So cash only. 4.) try to go during a down time, an off time being past lunch/early or late afternoon. They close at 6 and we went around 4 with only a few people ahead of us in line. Don't be late when they call your name up, because if the food is sitting there you're going to get soggy fried oysters. Don't take this "to go" and let it sit there for a long time. Fried oysters are meant to be eaten right away otherwise it'll spoil. So... if you stick to these two food menu items and follow my tips, it's for sure a 5 star food joint.
