Random bill they sent my wife 2.5 years after her cleaning

The most terrible dental experience I've had. I really tried to give this place a chance: I did two teeth cleanings and a whitening which were ok - Richard, you're ok but the rest of you are crooks. I had a crown implant which wasn't necessary (read further below) and was a painful nightmare of an experience. The Smilist is also dishonest with their billing and racks up mysterious bills against you. On my first visit, the dentist (Dr Kirshembaum) told me I needed a crown, and she "had a few minutes" and could do it right there. I trusted her and went with the process, allowing her to drill and put in a temporary crown. When the permanent crown fitting happened she clumsily put it in, and a couple of days later the crown fell out and I was in SO MUCH pain (your tooth nerve is exposed). I had to go back to get it re-fitted on. Every time I came in, the office receptionist would say I owed a lot of money until I question them and made them look deeper. Then they would say that they "figured something out with my account" and that was fine. I was told that the cleanings were completely covered by insurance. I paid for the whitening entirely out of pocket, and for the crown they gave me a detailed sheet showing what insurance would cover and what I would pay out of pocket. To be clear, I paid exactly what was on that sheet and what was communicated to me as owed before procedures were performed, but every time afterwards there was always a high balance. Later on, I learned the insurance denied the coverage of the crown. When I contacted insurance, the rep explained that it was denied because the X rays showed that I NEVER NEEDED A CROWN at all. Months later, I was still in a lot of pain from the crown and reluctantly had to go back. The original dentist never actually checked my bite and fitted/shaved down the crown to fit properly, so my bite was uneven which caused me to bite with full force onto the one tooth with the crown. The new dentist I saw (Dr Culpepper, who had been briefed on my experience) performed the fitting adjustment, but then remarked that I now need a ROOT CANAL on that tooth!! He also conveniently "had a few minutes to do it right there" if I wanted. Ok lastly, my wife went to the Smilist 2.5 years ago for a simple cleaning. We just got a bill in the mail today for over $500 for her with no explanation why! I've held off on posting a review on this place for a while, but this last bill was the final straw. There's more to my experience here (that's what a shit show this place is), but I had to narrow this down for brevity. To this day, my tooth with the crown still doesn't feel right, but I'm not going back to these crooks and I advise anyone else to also AVOID THE SMILIST

Beautiful and warm atmosphere. The office is very clean. The staff is professional and very kind. They are like family to me. Dr. Culpepper is an excellent dentist. He is a very cool dentist. He makes his patients feel at home and comfortable. He is also funny and likes music. He is also very thorough and articulate when it come to his work. If I must say so myself, I am very pleased with the dental work that he has done on my teeth. I would definitely and highly recommend him to others. His assistants Marisa and Mario are wonderful as well. If you are reading this review and are impelled to seek future dental care.....find your way to THE SMILIST located at 120 Nassau Ave. Greenpoint NY 11222 (347) 560-4540.

    Goodie bag, yay

I had a great experience at this dental office. First, the front desk asked me to fill out the form on my cell phone before the visit so that's contactless. Then they took x ray and Yan the hygienist did a fantastic job, I drink 3 cups of coffee per day and when I say she did a great job I mean it. Lol!! I love my dental assistant Marisa, super friendly and professional, she makes me feel very comfortable at the office. Doctor Culpepper was very knowledgeable and gave helpful advices for taking care of my teeth, he recommended night guard and a crown for my tooth. Very clean office. They also gave me a goodie bag after the visit. I will be back soon!!

I started to see another dentist there, and then they also left. Being that I was so anxious about the dentist I stopped going entirely for a time. Finally I made an appointment. I told the person making the appointment about this history because I wasn't sure which dentist to book with. I wound up booking with the dentist who the secretary told me was also a gum specialist, because I just figured this person might be the most qualified there. I made the appointment a month out. I get there and after a brief conversation, the dental assistant is incredibly rude. There seemed to be some confusion for her over what was scheduled. She said I did not have a cleaning scheduled. She was noteably annoyed trying to explain to me that the periodontist doesn't do cleanings, which I already understood. I'm still not clear why she was getting so frustrated but I found it to be a really rude and impatient response in general, but especially to someone who she already knew had high anxiety around being at the dentist. She put her hand up and closed her eyes in annoyance, and told me she was going to get someone else to talk to explain things to me. When she left I decided I was not going to continue the appointment with this kind of person and I got up to put on my coat. As I was doing that I heard her in the other room say, "please teach her." Which, made it clear I was done with this office. If there was any problem that this woman should have been upset with, it's internally. Speak to the person who made the appointment. Maybe they were confused. I was direct when I told them I hadn't been in a while and I needed a cleaning and an exam. Standard. Don't take your frustrations out on the patient. So rude, so unnecessary.

It ended with her letting me know that she drilled so much tooth that I would probably need a root canal. The office manager texted me the next day with several apologies, probably because the staff had noticed what a disaster it was. This was a dentist they were "trying out." I wish I'd been informed as much, and that a regular dentist had also been present. I haven't chewed with the left side of my mouth since, and rely on ibuprofen and tylenol for the pain. iSmile ignored my last scheduling text, and while was told that the owner was going to call me, but never did. They were paid well from both me and my insurance, the dentist was paid, and yet I have to undergo a root canal elsewhere. Obviously I've booked in with my previous dentist that is trustworthy.

This review is for the Ridgewood location…read more I don't normally leave negative reviews usually, if I have a bad experience, I just move on and don't return. But in this case, I feel it's important to share what happened so others can make an informed decision. I visited this dental office due to discomfort in one of my teeth and was told I needed a root canal because of an infection. I mentioned that I was leaving for vacation in a week and asked if it could wait until I returned. The dentist strongly advised that I get it done immediately due to the infection risk, so I agreed. I had the root canal two days before my trip. While on vacation in another state, I started experiencing severe pain. I ended up having to see an endodontist, paying $600 out of pocket. They confirmed I had a large abscess and were surprised I had not been prescribed antibiotics especially given I had an active infection going into the procedure. Right after my root canal, while checking out, I specifically asked the front desk if I needed a prescription for antibiotics. The receptionist told me no. I trusted her answer, even though I thought antibiotics were usually part of the protocol. While still on vacation, I called the dental office to explain the situation and asked if there was any possibility of compensation, since I had to seek emergency care due to what I believe was a preventable issue. I was told someone would get back to me after speaking with the manager. Three days passed with no response. I followed up and was told the owner was out of the country and would contact me the following week. A week passed no call. I followed up again and was told they were still waiting to hear back from the owner. Eventually, I got a text message stating that symptoms after a root canal are normal with or without antibiotics, and that no refund or credit would be provided. I called back to clarify that I had a known infection before root canal, and the development of an abscess afterward is not normal in that situation. I also reiterated that I had asked the receptionist about antibiotics, and while I understand it's not her role to prescribe medication, she should have confirmed with the dentist before confidently telling me I didn't need any. Worst of all, despite multiple follow-ups, I never heard directly from the manager or owner, even though I was told I would. Instead, I received a dismissive message and no accountability. I had originally planned to return to this office for a crown, but after the poor communication, lack of follow-through, and unprofessionalism I experienced, I won't be going back.

My wife and I are always satisfied with them. Billing is never an issue, either. Comfortable waiting area helps alleviate any "pre-dental-work" tensions, too :-) Only 2 minor quibbles: I'm 6'5 and the dental chair is a tad shorter than my body length (a common issue with big folks like me in any doctor's or dentist's office). Bringing along a small pillow for behind my head helped in my comfort: just a tip if you're tall. Also, because of my height, it was difficult to place myself bodily in their secondary x-rays-chair in one of their offices without contorting myself. But again: not everyone is 6'5 like me. The first set of xrays were the normal set taken in the dental chair which were not an issue...and they sufficed for the x-rays needed in my case. All that aside, Dr. Kim and the dental-office staff were great at their job(s), offer good dental advice and are pleasant to deal with. I'd recommend Norman Dental Center in Greenpoint to anyone needing care or cleaning. I wish my wife and I had discovered them earlier (we live nearby); we'd been going to another dental office, also in Gpt but farther away (I won't name them) and this not only was easier to get to but the care has been better, too. Dr. Wang refused to extract anymore saying they weee healthy teeth, which is false. CBCT proved him totally wrong. Dr. Wang charged over $6000 to cause me harm removing only four teeth for that ridiculous price. Dr. Dekhkanov charged $1000 to replace the temporary crowns Dr. Wang broke. They were on horribly decayed, painful teeth Dr. Wang refused to extract. The temporaries look like they were made by a preschooler. Their xrays and cbct were unusable by other dentists and were $600. Dr. Dekhkanov intentionally did not point out infection in my teeth and mouth. I had to point it out to him on CBCT. It is overt infection needing biopsy and culture. And then Dr. Dekhkanov prescribed me a pediatric dose of antibiotic to treat the infection he tried to hide from me. He and Dr. Wang refused to extract my teeth for dentures. I am already missing 10 teeth. I believe their refusal was an intent to prevent treatment of infection and bone loss. I believe they work with the shadow government in this metaverse who intend to cause harm to very specific people. Evil men. I have conditions which prevent me from being able to have further crowns and root canals. Dentures are the only option for teeth, and they refused. The customer before me left completely satisfied and smiling which set me at ease. I knew it was going to take some work to clean up my teeth especially around the gums. She took her time and was apologetic for how much she had to do. It was obviously my own fault for waiting so long to come in. I will be sending my family and everyone I know in the area to this finely run business.

This is a review regarding Dr. Anna…read more She is absolutely wonderful both as a person and as a dental doctor. She explains everything in a clear and concise manner before doing any procedure and even goes over the x ray with you so you can get a sense of what is going on. She also has a sense of humor and quickly builds rapport with you. Everyone knows how much it sucks to get drilled by a dentist, so I am glad she happened to take care of me. As a patient I am truly grateful to be under her care. I would recommend this place to anyone who are afraid of dentists!!!
