I went to iSmile Greenpoint as a new patient to have an existing filling redone. [Background: I'm a patient at Wally and they don't redo fillings]. Dr. Diba redid my filling and said that all went well, however that my filling in the next tooth would also need to be redone imminently. As I was already numbed, we agreed she could do it then. I have had plenty of fillings before, but I have never had my head jerked around, sharp pain, and so much uncertaintly during an appointment. It ended with her letting me know that she drilled so much tooth that I would probably need a root canal. The office manager texted me the next day with several apologies, probably because the staff had noticed what a disaster it was. This was a dentist they were "trying out." I wish I'd been informed as much, and that a regular dentist had also been present. I haven't chewed with the left side of my mouth since, and rely on ibuprofen and tylenol for the pain. iSmile ignored my last scheduling text, and while was told that the owner was going to call me, but never did. They were paid well from both me and my insurance, the dentist was paid, and yet I have to undergo a root canal elsewhere. My experience with the actual dentist here was fine, but I wanted to write a review about their billing practices to warn others from coming here. I had just moved to the area and was looking for a new dentist. Everything seemed fine until two days before my second yearly cleaning, when they informed me that I was actually maxed out of dental benefits and would have to pay $205 for my routine cleaning. Turns out, they completely MAXED OUT my dental insurance plan, charging my insurance $900 for my first time patient cleaning. They justified this saying, "well, your insurance didn't actually even end up paying the full amount (they paid $700+) but we didn't bill you for the rest so.. you're welcome," completely ignoring the fact that they're charging so much for a standard procedure that I'm not even able to get my second yearly clean. After talking with my insurance rep, turns out that they had lied about being in-network and, as out-of-network providers, were able to charge my insurance whatever they want. I would definitely avoid going here just to avoid their over-inflated and, borderline fraudulent billing practices. read more

Stay away! My experience was so terrible, I get angry every time I think about it. It's been two weeks. Came in for a routine cleaning. Some lady in a rush spent just about 10 minutes cleaning my teeth, then spent the next 20 minutes sandbagging me that my teeth have spots and discolorations and, "I haven't looked at my teeth before". Mind you, I have Invisaligns, any person with any common sense would know I have probably looked at my teeth! "You had these since you were a child, you had too much fluoride". I have never seen these after cleaning my entire life! Maybe if she cleaned my teeth properly, the front would not be whiter than the back! But wait, there is more! She doesn't know how to use the panoramic x-ray machine. So she calls someone else to assist. While my head is in between the x-ray, the guy wants her to use it for the first time on my head! I had to go get a new cleaning. These guys are awful and you should avoid them if you appreciate any normal decent treatment!! read more

STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS CLINIC AND Dr. Portman. I'm not sure how they have so many 5 star reviews (maybe bots?) But if you are doing dental work through insurance, stay far away. I came into the office having seen their great reviews and that they are "in-network" for my insurance, and everything was fine up until the end of the visit. I booked again and did more dental work the next week. A couple weeks later, I see an out of network charge on my insurance for 880$ for JUST the cleaning, driving my dental insurance costs to almost hit the yearly limit. And I received a bill north of 500$ for the rest of my dental work despite already paying a 300$ deductible. Not once were they transparent about their costs, and I have never felt so scammed in the medicine industry. Apparently, they have multiple offices that take different insurances at different locations, and based on your insurance, they will guarantee to bill you out of network - despite them telling you that you are "in-network" and your insurance is "accepted". Listen to the other one-star reviews if you have insurance, and be wary of situations like this. Always ensure costs before they do ANY kind of procedure on you. read more

I went to this place for a few years and was mostly pleased but unfortunately, I had three fillings fall out within mere months of getting them done by Dr. Aguilar. Two of the fillings were too large to be re-filled so I was told I would need root canals and crowns in each tooth. Previously, Dr. Angel had told me that I only needed to watch one of the teeth and may not need a filling. Then Dr. Aguilar said it was so close to the root that I almost needed a root canal. Given the poor longevity of the fillings, I do not trust this office with my crowns. To their credit, they did re-fill one filling for free. However, they did not offer any kind of discount on the crowns and root canals that I now require due to the poor longevity of the fillings I received at iSmile Park Slope. I've never had tooth pain until the cavity fillings I had here and last week that tooth just crumbled. I went to another place to get it fixed and the rest of my teeth were great, 0 cavities. This place got very shady. I'd been coming here for years but got a strange "bait and switch" dentist last year after only booking with Dr Portman for years. I had 2 rushed fillings by this woman who kept calling me "babe" that were done so poorly they turned into 2 root canals that cost me thousands! This dentist at the same practice wasn't in-network with my insurance and nobody cared to tell me. On top of this I received a bill almost a year later for $1000 (after paying for everything on the spot) for an amount that i never saw/agreed to. They gave me a statement that had a certain amount but billed my insurance a completely different amount and are now trying to charge me the difference. Disgusting practice. read more

I never experienced such negligence from this office until this year. For my 2021 cleaning, I received a different dentist than I thought I scheduled. I figured this was due to me not specifying when I rescheduled. I am unsure her name, the appointment was so rushed, I thought she was the dental hygienist at first. I felt this dentist that I never met before wanted to do an invasive procedure for no reason. Makes me sick and I will have trust issues with future dentists. During my follow up oral exam I was again given a different dentist after I thoroughly made sure to specify Dr. Rimma Portman. I am glad I got Dr. Angel Blagoev's second opinion, but this was not the dentist I asked to see and he is out of network with my insurance. I thoroughly explained to the scheduler my in-network status with Dr. Rimma Portman. This is not a mistake. Every person involved actively did not listen to me multiple times. Not being listened to after taking all the proper steps ahead of time is bringing up painful triggering memories. Saying something and another thing being done. Not giving consent to switching dentists. Again after repeating that I specifically asked for Dr. Rimma Portman at office when I was already was in the chair, I wasn't listened to. Freezing in the chair, not sure what to do. I feel sick to my stomach and so violated. I hope they work to mitigate this for other clients, but I will not return. read more

I have been coming to iSmile since 2015. I had really great experiences until my two visits this year. I came in for a routine cleaning and had to wait over 30 mins to be seen. I get it sometimes that happens but I had to ask the front desk multiple times for updates. The next week I came back for two small fillings. So small that I didn't need any numbing injections. I again had to wait 30 mins to be seen, and I was given no updates on how much longer the wait time would be. I was under the impression that 70% of the service would be covered by my insurance. A few months later, I received a bill for around $600. I called my insurance and they shared that the dentist I saw no longer accepts my insurance. Only 20% of the service was covered by my insurance and I'm out almost $600. I would be very cautious about coming to iSmile as they are not transparent about the how much a service will cost. read more

Loved that this dentist came recommended and was in the neighborhood. However, they are so incredibly aggressive in your mouth, I had two cavities done on two teeth that are next to each other-had it don't Fall of last year-they STILL hurt. It's been 9 months. I went back in maybe three times to get it looked at after-and every time they said my teeth/gums are just healing from being bruised essentially. I've had cavities before-this has NEVER happened. This is an awful dental practice and I would not recommend that anyone goes there. I scheduled a cleaning here two weeks ago and was met with the worst bedside manners from all the staff (aside from the reception). Each hygienist/ dentist was extremely rude, and they cleaned my teeth for a total of about 15 minutes or less. I've never received, in my life, a cleaning that was less than 45 minutes. I do not feel they did an adequate job. After all that, they charged my insurance $540, which is absurd. Standard cleanings are $250. My insurance, of course, is not paying the whole thing and I'm left to foot the bill. This practice is a scam. Please save yourself the time and money by choosing another dentist. read more

I'v been going to iSmile Dental for like 5 years now and I am very happy and satisfied with the experience. I've done numbers of fillings done, mouth guard, crown, couple root canals etc etc and it's been always been a great experience. I'm cavity prone and have been to many dentists over the years but this place is hands down the best so far. I really like that the doctors here take time to communicate about the condition and procedure with you in a direct, to the point way, and they don't perform any unnecessary procedures as I've experienced w other dentists in the past- You can really tell they care about the teeth. Dr. Portman and Dr. Sohal have been wonderful, professional and consistent over the years, and the office staffs are friendly and caring. I have never felt so scammed by a medical office in my life. Came here because I saw they take my insurance on zocdoc. When I got to the office, they took my insurance card and never once told me that I was ou-of-network. I went for a regular cleaning and xrays. Three weeks later, got mailed a $300 bill by my insurance. I called the office, they told me don't worry about the bill, they would just take as much as my insurance would pay them for out-of-network costs. Very suspicious. This cleaning cost me $950 of my annual maximum of $1,000. I went to another dentist after this and they were shocked and confused as to how I was charged this much money for cleaning visit. This was an absolutely amazing experience. I'm 40 years old. Either all my like, people have been doing teeth cleaning wrong, or they are just amazing. No pain or discomfort at all. The X-Ray machine is way over the top, it sings to you and plays classical music. Very funny. Great friendly staff. Dr. Rimma is fantastic-- actually cares, takes work home and gives you a practical plan, not just "oh brush your teeth and come back in 6 months." Great experience really--- I even got lucky with parking 1 block away! There is never parking in Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY-- so the Gods of Oral Hygiene must have blessed me today! There administrative staff is very inefficient and lacks to inform patients of necessary information. They claim they mailed me bills I never received them . Be cautious about deceptive billing practices. You may end up with a surprise bill of $500 for a routine visit. I found iSmile on my insurance company's website of in-network providers (Delta Dental). I looked on Yelp at the great reviews and read Dr. Portman's Yelp statement about her practice - everything looked good so I decided to book. When booking, I provided my insurance information, confirmed that they took that insurance (Delta Dental), and scheduled my appointment. After the appointment, the front desk checked me out and confirmed everything was good with my insurance and charged me the appropriate deductible and co-insurance (just over $100). A couple weeks later, iSmile sent me a bill for more than $500. This was after they collected $500 from my insurance company (in addition to what I paid during the appointment). The total bill was more than $1000 for routine cleaning and 1 filling. I was incredibly surprised by this because iSmile is advertised on Delta Dental's website as in-network, and all interactions with the office indicated this as well. To better understand what happened, I checked Delta Dental's statement of benefits for the visit. What I discovered was that my insurance was charged by a different dentist office located in Manhattan (not iSmile) and that the dentist sending the bill was someone who doesn't appear anywhere on iSmile's website. I reached out to iSmile to ask whether this was a mistake and to better understand what happened. I've never heard back. This seems like an elaborate process for iSmile to go through to avoid honoring their negotiated rates with Delta Dental. The result is that they are preventing patients from making informed decisions when choosing a dentist, and potentially ruining people's lives with surprise bills. read more

I've needed a root canal for about 15 years because of a hockey injury and have been putting it off like an idiot. My front tooth has always been discolored because of it and it was just something I've lived with. When I made an appointment for a regular cleaning, I met with Dr. Sohal as she is the one who performs root canals here. For whatever reason, she made me feel comfortable in going through with it. Something that my previous 10+ dentist have never done. The procedure was incredibly quick and painless. Dr. Sohal is definitely one of the nicest and most experienced dentists that I've ever come across and can't thank her enough. If you're on the fence about a dentist, look no further. This dental office used to be my best dentist and I refereed to many friends. I just had a filling fixed and cleaning done. Dr. Portman was not available so I had secondary doctor. She didn't even show me what she has done at the end and wrapped up quickly. Then she recommended to get an annual checkup and cleaning done but of course they told me to come back next day. The dental assistant tried to get cleaning done, and she kept dropping cleaning supplies and I was very suspicious how she handled afterwords. She also suspected a cavity on xray but she couldn't tell either point where the actual cavity was in my mouth... I've always had a huge fear of dentists since I was a toddler. That fear only worsen as I grew older. The last time I went to the dentist was about 7|8 years ago (as an adult). I never went back (different dental practice in Jersey) bc mid way I had a panic attack. They were so non-compassionate about my anxieties and that I was prone to panic attacks; I prob should've sued the shit outta them (lol). I chose iSmile based on the reviews on Yelp and 2 personal reviews from my clients. My tooth has been hurting for a month and I no longer could ignore the pain. So outta anger I made an appointment. Lmao yes you read that right! Anger; I was mad about something unrelated about my tooth. When I'm angry I feel real brave and daring (lol) so my ass made an appointment to the dentist (lmao). I am so unbelievably happy that I chose iSmile. I did write in my notes on Zoc Doc that I am extremely nervous. Not sure whether they saw that or not. Dun dun dun finally day of my appointment. The morning of I was contemplating on "not waking up in time to becoming ill to I'm lost and can't find the office". I went eventually... My dental hygienist was Erica; which I will ALWAYS request. I guess she felt and saw how nervous I was. And after explaining to her why I haven't been to the dentist in forever she really took it seriously. She even offered to numb my gums which made me feel "safe". By her doing so I noticed that I didn't start to hyperventilate when she was about to start (which I always did in the past). Erica was amazing from beginning to end. She was so friendly, so kind and so understanding. I really truly appreciate her so much. Bc she made my experience easy and comforting. I think if things didn't go as Erica did it I would never ever see a dentist again for another 7|8 or more years. She actually set it up for the dentist; I wasn't afraid. Nervous yes but NOT afraid. I literally knew this practice was women-owned and ran by women because of how organized, clean and efficient they all are. I wasn't super looking forward to writing this review after all the good experiences I've had here in the past, but my last checkup was pretty underwhelming and definitely left me feeling less than taken care of. The cleaning was good, but the dentist who came in (I didn't even get her name because she was in and out so quickly) was not super friendly or thorough in the least - she didn't ask me any questions and what she did tell me was kind of unclear. Before I even had time to process what questions I had for her, she was out the door. This was probably all over the span of 4-5 minutes at most. The best dental clinic I've ever been to! Dr. Portman is very professional and very nice! All other workers are also super friendly and welcoming. I had a couple of fillings done there - it was totally painless. And my Invisalign treatment is just WOW! Totally worth the money! I had plenty of follow up appointments to make sure everything goes well and you'll always get reminders when to come in, so you don't miss any important appointments. The service I received was excellent. I visited once in 2019 and again a couple of weeks ago. However their practices regarding billing are shambolic. When I initially visited in 2019 they were an in-network provider for my insurer. After visiting more recently for an expensive procedure, they required me to pay up front the $2,000 fee, advising me they would make the claim for me on the back end. Now, seeing the claim amount online coming up as 'out of network' I called the dentist to ask. They let me know that a couple of months ago they became out of network for my provider. I am shocked that they did not advise me of this when I was handing over the $2,000 check. I am extremely picky when it comes to my healthcare providers, especially with with scheduling convenience provided by ZocDoc and the plethora of choices that are available in this area. I had tried three or four dentists until I finally discovered iSmile and have been a regular (I have awesome dental insurance and one of those weird people that enjoy my cleanings and thus go 3 or 4 times a year) for the past three or so years. Fortunately my work has been pretty standard with just annual checkup and x-rays as my cleanings. I did order a sports mouth guard through them and it fits like a gem so far has taken a decent amount of punishment. Their staff from the front desk to the hygienist are incredibly friendly and do an amazing job with the cleanings. Dr. Portman is wonderful as well; had some tough to remove staining when I first saw her (too much coffee, tea, etc) but did a stellar job and since then I haven't noticed anything. Their scheduling is very accomodating as well with late evening appointments and weekends for those that find it difficut to step away from the office. No complaints, I enjoy going to this dentist, enough for three or four trips a year, what more can I say? read more

For starters, I never enjoyed going to the dentist as a child. Dr. Portman has turned that experience around for me. She, along with her amazing welcoming staff, are amazing. After my treatment of Invisalign at iSmile (Williamsburg), I needed a minor surgery called Labial Frenectomy to prevent my front gap from happening after my Invisalign treatment. I was very reluctant to receive treatment, but Dr. Portman assured me it would be fast, easy, and would be back to normal once the procedure was over. She was right, as always! UPDATED REVIEW: I cannot stress enough how amazing Dr. Portman is. Yesterday I had my veneers done and I literally teared up because of how good they looked. The process was basically painless except for the few Initial pinching you get when numbing before the procedure. I left feelingin like a million bucks Today however I felt like I was having a little issue with my bite and I was feeling some friction between my veneers and my natural bottom teeth. I called the office and without hesitation I was told to come in immediately to have the problem fixed. My bite now feels completely normal and honestly I've never felt better about how I look. It is this type of customer service that I appreciate so much. Ismile had me me come in immediately to fix the issue. Dr. Portman and the entire Ismile team are an incredible bunch of people who realllly care bout what they do . My smile looks FUCKING BEAUTIFUL. I am forever grateful. Past review : I have had horrible experiences at dentist appointments before and I had to give this experience a 5 star review because it was simply amazing. Dr. Rimma was incredible. She was polite, professional, funny, gentle and made the usual dentist experience a much smoother one for me. The front desk was also on point! I didn't have to wait at all and was greeted immediately. I went in for a deep cleaning and a veneer consultation and I felt no pain and my teeth look and feel great after months of issues with bleeding and gum pain. One week after my cleaning I am no longer bleeding and my gums feel healthier then ever. I am so confident in Dr. Rimma and he team at Ismile that I already booked my next cleaning and I am also getting veneers done by her. The receptionist at iSmile SAVED my Invisalign treatment and my sanity! I effed up my trays by attempting to clean them in boiling hot water (DON'T DO THAT). Invisalign trays can handle lukewarm water and nothing more than that. Now I microwave water for 1.15 minutes before placing them in Retainer Brite solution. Anyway, I called iSmile in a panic, saying I needed replacement trays shipped to me. And they put my order in right away. It takes about a week for the order to go through Invisalign HQ. And I had moved from NY to LA, so iSmile had to ship the trays to me through priority mail (which I was happy to pay extra for). They did everything so that I could get my trays in a timely fashion and so that my teeth didn't shift one bit. I'm so thankful all my hard work and socially awkward moments of the Invisalign process were not wasted. Highly recommend the customer service at iSmile :) read more
