I've been here before for the Smith Burger after hearing such great reviews, but came back for lunch today and I think their Breakfast Sandwich might be better. The egg was cooked beautifully and the avocado added additional creaminess. The potatoes had a lot of flavor infused into them as well. This place only survives based on location. The tables are so small that just your dish and glass of water barely fit. They're trying to pack in as many people as they can and clearly had some strategist tell them to maximize profit in this manner, because even their dish plates that come out are actually miniature plates, like slightly larger than side plates but much smaller than dinner plates. Because they clearly know that there is no room on these tiny tables to serve even two dinner-size plates. The service is terrible - our server looked badly hungover and even the other guy who brought our food out to the table looked like he could fall asleep right there and then. There was no check-in's if we needed anything else, no conversation about the menu options, no "service" at all in fact. The food is quite mediocre - lacking flavor. The Johnny Benedict was so bad that my friend only had half and left the rest because it was "too weird". My ranchero scramble was mostly sour cream and very little beans or eggs or avocado. The juice was definitely not "freshly squeezed" - I know many places and brands take liberty with what that actually means. And the "free" brunch "cocktail" was just a glass of ice that my friend didn't even have after the first sip. And you still pay premium prices ($22 per dish) because of the location. As someone else said, it's no better than a diner. And not even a good one. And oh, the acoustics of the place are horrible - you can't have a conversation even on a Sunday morning when they're not busy. read more

Fantastic experience here at The Smith. The ambiance is beautiful and we came here on our second night of the bachelorette trip in Chicago. Food was truly fantastic from beginning to end. Food Ratings Branzino 5/5 Steak medium rare 5/5 Rigatoni alla vodka 5/5 Braised short rib malfadine 4/5 Calamari 5/5 Spicy salmon tartare 5/5 Oysters 4/5 My favorite dish of the night was the branzino. I will absolutely come back for that the next time I am in town. The steak was a perfect ten out of ten and cooked exactly the way I ordered it which is rare since many places tend to overcook. The malfadine was delicious but the rigatoni alla vodka still wins for me. The calamari was great and the spicy salmon tartare was also a highlight. The oysters were refreshing and a nice start to the meal. The only thing to note is that the restaurant is quite loud and busy so you will find yourself raising your voice to talk to your friends. Stopped by here for dinner with friends recently and so enjoyed the experience. We arrived in the earlier part of a Sunday evening (5:30ish) to find it nearly empty. We stayed until close to 7pm and by then it was nearly full so I'd probably recommend reservations if you plan to come during peak dining times. We began our experience with cocktails and the burrata appetizer, which were both delicious. The burrata came with buttery thinly sliced garlic bread. It was great. For my cocktail, I enjoyed the whiskey business, which was pitch perfect (not overly sweet, boozy, and delicious). For my main dish, I got the veggie burger with shoestring fries. The fries were plentiful (definitely enough to share), crispy, salty, and delicious. The veggie burger was solid--it didn't blow me away but was good. The prices are high but it's Chicago, so that was expected (appetizer, drink, a side of grits for my dining companion, and veggie burgers for two ran roughly $170 before tip). Dined in on a Tuesday evening with a few coworkers. The design and decor of the place is very impressive the moment you walk in. We were seated right away and the waiter was very attentive. I ordered the spicy shrimp scampi. I honestly wasn't expecting much but it is one of the best shrimp pastas I've ever had. We sat near the bartender mixing area, which is great entertainment if you're into that sort of thing like we are. Both bartenders were fun, busy, and very skilled. I got a glass of brut from their good wine list and my brother got a mixed drink. For dinner, I got the braised short rib fusilli-a tasty fresh-flavored dish. We started with the blue cheese chips that are drizzled with this amazing blue cheese dressing throughout! Brussels sprouts as an appetizer went really fast at the table. I really liked their interpretation of a French dip. Instead of french fries, I substituted the jalapeño cheesy grits, and they were delicious! Stopped by The Smith to partake in the Martini Happy Hour! Discounts on appetizers and a variety of martinis. I ordered the Basil Lemon Drop Martini and it was crisp and refreshing. Perfect drink after a long work week! Also tried the black truffle arancini, which was a sophisticated mozzarella stick - so tasty!! The staff is outstanding. They went above and beyond to help find a spot near the bar for happy hour and took our allergy restrictions very seriously. She was friendly, happy to answer any questions, kept our water glasses full and was just on top of everything. Now for the food. My husband's grilled chicken sandwich was a flavor bomb! The aioli took it to a whole other level. After being "overserved" the night before, I chose wheat toast and chicken sausage to kind of keep it bland. Well let me tell you, neither the sausage or the toast was in any way bland. If you eat here, please get a side of the sausage!! It was the best breakfast sausage I've ever had. Went for brunch and it was good/reliable! This isn't a place that reinvent the wheel and they have several locations and other cities so you know what you're going to get. The atmosphere feels like a typical New York restaurant - Modern, but still open and airy. But it's an easy place for a nicer brunch and a good place to go with parents. Stopped in for lunch after the marathon and ended up having a great experience. The outdoor patio (in its final weeks here in October) was a treat to get a seat at and filled with warmers if you're concerned at all with the chicago weather. Our service was prompt and cordial, plus we loved the inside when we passed through to check in at the front desk. Would love to eat inside and try their dinner menu next time we go, because the ambiance seemed classy but casual. My friend loved the spicy salmon appetizer and we both loved our iced mochas to start. They also brought out complimentary sour dough bread that had a great texture to it. Moving on the mains, I think the burger was great in the first couple bites but overall there is a lot going on. Probably a little bit too much for my liking, because I thought the burger patty itself was perfect and I would've loved to focus on the taste of that a bit more. A lot of sauce and quite overpowering - especially paired with the crispy onions on it. If you're someone who hates a simple burger, you'd probably love this. Me personally, I would get it again but a stripped down version of it! My friend loved their chicken sandwich and didn't have much to note about it because they were pretty full from the appetizer- but I included a photo anyways for those who are curious and would like to see what they're getting in to. I have celiac and when we got seated with Adrien and immediately knew we were in good hands. She was incredibly friendly, helpful, and very attentive, literally a perfect server experience. The food and drinks were delicious as well - we got cosmos and The Gatsby all night and they were perfect. I got the truffle fries which were great and the gluten free pasta which was so good I almost doubted it was gf. I loved the idea of veges inside the calamari dish but i only liked the zucchini bc it was not crispy but the other veges were salty all crispy but the breading of the calamari was not crispy or light for the maybe 8 calamari ring pieces that werent fried to a crisp. There were so few pieces of actual calamari for $19. There were the baby full pieces w legs but they were air fried to a crisp so that none of those pieces were chewy ... just crunchy. So it tasted like just potato crisps that looked like calamari. So i was still hungry when usually a plate of fried calamari would have filled me up. The drinks were good. Overall it's a great atmosphere nice for crowds of family and friends when you are out late and the wait staff are attentive and friendly. read more

We stopped in for a late dinner around 10 PM after our flight landed, and somehow ended up having one of our favorite meals in Chicago. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety on their menu--we were able to order both pasta and bibimbap, which isn't a combination you see every day. But the real standout? The Ricotta Gnocchi with truffle cream. Hands down, some of the best gnocchi I've ever had--perfectly pillowy, light, and drenched in the most rich, flavorful sauce. Every bite was pure heaven. Beyond the food, the cocktails were excellent, and the entire experience was just easy and enjoyable. We all thoroughly loved our meal, and I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Chicago. It was good and I loved the burata on top but I was a little disappointed it didn't come with a side of pasta. When I asked about it, they said they don't do that but offered for me to get something else on the menu LOL I'm not that greedy! My table ended the night by sharing the devil layer cake and the sticky toffee pudding. They were both spectacular but the pudding blew me away. I will be dreaming of that for a while. read more
