Fantastic place to go for a pre-theater dinner! The servers were super attentive and knew that we were on a timeline. Really good American fare that's all very flavorful, but also very rich. We started with the blue cheese chips that are drizzled with this amazing blue cheese dressing throughout! Brussels sprouts as an appetizer went really fast at the table. I really liked their interpretation of a French dip. Instead of french fries, I substituted the jalapeño cheesy grits, and they were delicious! The burger is really hefty and comes with a generous portion of fries. My friend really liked the pot of mussels. The lighting is a bit dark, depending on where you're sitting. Stopped by The Smith to partake in the Martini Happy Hour! Discounts on appetizers and a variety of martinis. I ordered the Basil Lemon Drop Martini and it was crisp and refreshing. Perfect drink after a long work week! Also tried the black truffle arancini, which was a sophisticated mozzarella stick - so tasty!! The staff is outstanding. They went above and beyond to help find a spot near the bar for happy hour and took our allergy restrictions very seriously. The aioli took it to a whole other level. After being "overserved" the night before, I chose wheat toast and chicken sausage to kind of keep it bland. Went for brunch and it was good/reliable! This isn't a place that reinvent the wheel and they have several locations and other cities so you know what you're going to get. The atmosphere feels like a typical New York restaurant - Modern, but still open and airy. But it's an easy place for a nicer brunch and a good place to go with parents. I love the decor but it IS quite loud in there so a little hard to have a conversation with the others at your table. Maybe ask for a table way in the back. We still had a great time. The short rib fusilli was so perfect! And two of us ordered the Brick pressed Chicken. Very good. The calamari app was different and excellent. The drinks were fine. Nothing special...just cocktails. Stopped in for lunch after the marathon and ended up having a great experience. The outdoor patio (in its final weeks here in October) was a treat to get a seat at and filled with warmers if you're concerned at all with the chicago weather. Our service was prompt and cordial, plus we loved the inside when we passed through to check in at the front desk. Would love to eat inside and try their dinner menu next time we go, because the ambiance seemed classy but casual. My friend loved the spicy salmon appetizer and we both loved our iced mochas to start. They also brought out complimentary sour dough bread that had a great texture to it. Moving on the mains, I think the burger was great in the first couple bites but overall there is a lot going on. Probably a little bit too much for my liking, because I thought the burger patty itself was perfect and I would've loved to focus on the taste of that a bit more. A lot of sauce and quite overpowering - especially paired with the crispy onions on it. If you're someone who hates a simple burger, you'd probably love this. Me personally, I would get it again but a stripped down version of it! My friend loved their chicken sandwich and didn't have much to note about it because they were pretty full from the appetizer- but I included a photo anyways for those who are curious and would like to see what they're getting in to. I have celiac and when we got seated with Adrien and immediately knew we were in good hands. She was incredibly friendly, helpful, and very attentive, literally a perfect server experience. The food and drinks were delicious as well - we got cosmos and The Gatsby all night and they were perfect. I got the truffle fries which were great and the gluten free pasta which was so good I almost doubted it was gf. I loved the idea of veges inside the calamari dish but i only liked the zucchini bc it was not crispy but the other veges were salty all crispy but the breading of the calamari was not crispy or light for the maybe 8 calamari ring pieces that werent fried to a crisp. There were so few pieces of actual calamari for $19. There were the baby full pieces w legs but they were air fried to a crisp so that none of those pieces were chewy ... just crunchy. So it tasted like just potato crisps that looked like calamari. So i was still hungry when usually a plate of fried calamari would have filled me up. The drinks were good. Overall it's a great atmosphere nice for crowds of family and friends when you are out late and the wait staff are attentive and friendly. read more

I really wasn't expecting The Smith to be this good, but it completely exceeded my expectations. We stopped in for a late dinner around 10 PM after our flight landed, and somehow ended up having one of our favorite meals in Chicago. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety on their menu--we were able to order both pasta and bibimbap, which isn't a combination you see every day. But the real standout? The Ricotta Gnocchi with truffle cream. Hands down, some of the best gnocchi I've ever had--perfectly pillowy, light, and drenched in the most rich, flavorful sauce. Every bite was pure heaven. Beyond the food, the cocktails were excellent, and the entire experience was just easy and enjoyable. We all thoroughly loved our meal, and I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Chicago. I really enjoyed this spot! The atmosphere was beautiful and crowded for a Sunday. I got the chicken parm. It was good and I loved the burata on top but I was a little disappointed it didn't come with a side of pasta. When I asked about it, they said they don't do that but offered for me to get something else on the menu LOL I'm not that greedy! My table ended the night by sharing the devil layer cake and the sticky toffee pudding. They were both spectacular but the pudding blew me away. I will be dreaming of that for a while. read more

This is one of the pricier places in river north but i think it's totally worth the food! I don't think I've had a better vodka rigatoni than the one at The Smith!! The service was at the bar with Kyle. You'll notice him: he looks like the Walmart version of Ryan Gosling or Jake Gyllenhaal. Choose your poison: he delivers. Great conversationalist, very insightful and entertaining. 10/10 would recommend this bar just because of him. He provided bread and butter. Good conversation and a really cool moment. The Gnocchi were amazing. Truffles. Crispy? Unbelievable. The creamy sauce resembles a quattro formaggi from nonna herself. Very warm. The only thing: is not a lot of food for 25 bucks. It should need an extra scoop of that madness. 10/10 The Toffee cake or pudding is the specialty of the house when it comes to dessert. It's served with a creamy vanilla ice cream. The caramel flavour mixed with texture of the cake make it a fan favourite. We always keep coming back here. This is probably my most frequently visited Happy Hour (Martini Hour) in the city. It's hard to pin down a specific reason for why this restaurant draws me back. The service is quick and professional, certainly. The food is consistently good. The drinks are never watered down. The bar area always has a good rotation of people coming and going, and the dining area never has more than a few seats empty at a time. My favorites for Martini Hour are the French Martini and the Wake Up Call. The drinks here run strong. Pair that with a side of fries, and also a Half Dozen Oysters and it's going to be a good time. Proper menu-wise, I've only had the chance to try the Braised Short Rib Fusilli as an add-on after Martini Hour ended. This was a great mix of perfectly cooked short rib and al dente pasta (yes, actually al dente), with a slight bit of heat and some sweetness from the tomatoes. I think The Smith hits the standard for a lot of things for me, and that's probably why it's on my rotation of restaurants that I often go to. From a recommendation standpoint, if you're in town visiting and happen to be around, this would make a nice spot to grab a drink before roaming downtown some more. If you're a Chicagoan, come around if you get off from work early and grab a drink before eating a light(ish) dinner before heading back home. read more

We had a large group for a birthday dinner. We got there for an early dinner, straddling the end of lunch into the beginning of dinner. It wasn't very full when we got there, but by the time we left, the place was pretty busy. It has a handsome, clean, and enjoyable ambience. We had great service and spoke to someone other than our server who came to check on us to see how we were doing and talk about their food with them. Our table shared the french fries, calamari, and burrata for appetizers, of which, I tried all three. They were all really good. I wish there was more to the calamari, because it was really good and I just wanted to eat more of it. The burrata was served with a bed of red sauce, which it went well with it, but the real star of that dish was the toasted garlic bread came with. The french fries were ample and most importantly, very good. I would've liked to try the arancini, however, those appetizers are not on the lunch menu so we didn't end up getting them. We also would've tried the muscles to share for the table, but again those are not on the menu we ordered our appetizers from while waiting for dinner to start. For dinner, I got the pork chop which is served on a bed of jalapeño cheesy grits. This dinner was just wonderful. I took a superhuman amount of strength to not lick my plate when I was done eating. I tasted a bite of my wife's gnocchi, and it was utterly fantastic. It could possibly stand to be a little bigger of a dish, but for taste, it was darn near perfect. The only thing that I had at The Smith that I didn't like was the side car. I've had a lot of side cars in a lot of places, including various cities around the world. It's not my go to drink, but I have it semi-frequently in nicer establishments, and I did not like this one. That's really the only part of the dining experience that did not completely impress me. read more

I could see this place being good for a work coffee or cocktail. I had planned brunch here with a friend, but by the time we got there the patio was in shade, and there were very few people inside. We still decided to give it a chance, because the staff had a friendly vibe. Our server was great. Everything took awhile to come out, though, and the salmon tartare was just not very good. I don't think we finished it and it's five pieces. The spice is a small slice of jalapeño, the texture of the salmon (paste?) was just off and not very flavorful. We decided not to order more.
