My family recently celebrated a birthday with a party of approximately 40 guests, and it was our first time dining there. From start to finish, the experience was wonderful. Our waitstaff, Ben and Brittany, were phenomenal. They were attentive, accommodating, and went above and beyond to make sure everything went smoothly. I have a special dietary restriction, and they were kind enough to prepare a separate plate for me instead of having me choose from the main buffet. We also arrived a little early to put up some small decorations, and Ben was incredibly helpful in getting everything set up. The views were beautiful, and the food was delicious. Inside, there appear to be separate rooms available for private parties as well as regular dining, which makes it a cozy and versatile place for celebrations and larger events. My entire family was very pleased with how everything turned out. Another bonus is the location--it's situated in a charming little town with shops within walking distance, making it a great place to explore before or after your meal. First time here, and I was expecting better based on the reviews. Entrance, tables, chairs, and ambiance were as I expected. Ordered New England Clam Chowder. Served quickly and hot in a big, wide bowl. It looked good. Had small, irregularly sized potatoes and chopped carrots. The broth was a little thicker than I imagined or had tasted before in other restaurants, or in the one I make. Clams were tiny and, as you'd expect from a can. Not fresh clams. In fact, you can put all the clams found in chowder in a single tablespoon. Even found a whole bay leaf in it, which should have been removed before serving it. So, how is the chowder? I've had better from canned chowder, and the one I make is way better. Zero stars for the chowder. Next up is the Turkey platter with sliced turkey (hard and dry), 1 ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes (ok, nothing special), 1 ice cream scoop of stuffing (totally disgusting, and had corn in it), string beans (with vine still attached), gravy (terrible), and a little cup of cranberries (decent). Total fail. The waitress was ok, though stopping by every 5 minutes to ask if everything was good was quite annoying. The 'ice water gentleman' was great. You never asked for water, and when the glass was 1/2 empty, he was there refilling it. Great job! The final score of 2 stars is for the historic inn's ambiance and layout. We met my in laws in Smithville because my mother in law said it was such a cute town. We all decided to try The Smithville Inn because they said it was the best restaurant there. So glad that we did because it was excellent with great staff. We all really enjoyed the food. I loved my crab cake sandwich. It was so moist and flavorful. My husband loved his turkey platter. The gravy was delicious and the turkey was moist. My father in law enjoyed his burger. It was a good menu and tight in the middle of the cute little town. Tonight 7 of my elderly friends gathered for the "Lobster special "! I Made reservations on Tuesday at 5:30 for 8 people on Friday 8/28 ,when we arrived the reservation was not found ( person taking reservation mistakingly made it for "Saturday Nite" ) Fortunately after a 40 minute wait the manager was able to secure a table in the "Tavern Room" Our Dinners were very good. The soups were fabulous! My short rib was amazing but the saffron risotto was overwhelmingly floral and I didn't eat it. The beat root veggies were yummy. The short rib fell off the bone and was tender! Hubby and friend ordered the stuffed chicken breast. He said considering the chicken was brined, it was a bit dry and the brussel sprouts were overdone. The sauce was "gloppy" (quote from my husband) The chicken rolatini was excellent as the pasta was cooked to perfection. Specialty cocktails were fun and delish. Great meal and not bad prices! Larger portions and some good specials added to the menu including a seasonal cocktail menu.

The French onion soups is alway good, love the crispy onions on top; however, I don't understand drinking soup with a teaspoon. Not a good combination tiny little spoon with so much cheese, onion, bread and broth. The French dip was delicious and nothing like a crispy steak french fry to go with it. The Brussel sprout salad was okay. It needed more of the bacon and dry cherries to balance the tartness of the dressing. The Apple dessert was wonderful, light, flakey and warm with the cool vanilla ice cream on top. Service was fair at best, once we ordered we didn't see our server again till she brought the bill as other people brought the food to the table. We had a great table location facing the window and being able to see outside. It's just beautiful in smithville. read more

Had Thanksgiving dinner here on November 27, 2025 as a party of 5. This was a walk up situation as reservations were only available for parties of 10 or more. Seating started at 12 and we arrived at 11:45am to submit our name. Quoted a 2:30 estimate to be seated which was fine as we strolled and shopped in the village. We weren't seated until 3:10pm which was way past the estimate and already long wait time. That being said.... dinner was delicious! Such a vast array of food and everything was hot, fresh and replenished often. The staff was AMAZING! They were on top of everything and were so kind and gracious. We were so appreciative that all the staff gave up being home with their families to make our day so wonderful. Manager Tony C stopped by our table when we were seated to welcome us and explain the buffet. He's a class act! We'll be back next year. We sat in the Tavern side - which was move my vibe. Less stuffy than the restaurant side - which had almost an hour long wait. We were seated immediately. The service was fantastic. Our waitress was great. I ordered the Pickle Burger off of the lunch specials menu. I got it medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. The fries were standard diner steak fries. My wife got the French Onion soup - which I tried and it was very good. Kids got Mac and Cheese - which was Kraft and a side. Kids's meals were $9.99. Went here last night for the first time, it was amazing! Party of 4, 2 couples. The inside is beautiful, old and rustic. Loved that they had a fireplace going and a live piano player. Since it was my first time, I had to get the famous Chicken pot pie! It did not disappoint! It is HUGE! I ate 1/3 of it (can't wait for lunch today!). My wife got a special Italian version of chicken fried steak with pasta, friend got Vitello Ala Anthony and his wife ordered the steak. Every item was done right. Nothing burnt, nothing under cooked. We had lunch there on Saturday, 28 February. We both ordered soup. I had the French onion and my date order chicken noodle. My French onion came to the table, but they did not bring the correct second soup. Rather than eat, I waited for the food runner to replace. The incorrect soup. It wasn't that long maybe about a minute. Here's the shame of it. All the French onion had all the right components. The soup itself was delicious. It had a great crouton with a nice amount of cheese it had fried tobacco onions on top for the addition of crunch, it came in a very nice pewter bowl. The only thing is it wasn't hot. In my humble opinion of French onion soup should be steaming actually too hot to eat when at first comes to the table. The fact that they use pewter should ensure that the soup always comes hot. If they kept the pewter bowls in the oven and when a soup was ordered, entered the soup into the hot bowl it would make a world of difference. I didn't send it back, but I didn't eat at all either because lukewarm soup is just not appetizing to me. Our entrées were the crabcake sandwich and I got the roasted butternut squash salad which I added grilled chicken to.. The crabcake was very good quality homemade pan seared with a very good flavor. It had a remoulade sauce and roasted red peppers. The bun was a good quality bun and it was toasted. The fries were steak cut fries and they were just so so. The salad had fresh burrata, candy, pecans, sun-dried, cherries, arugula, and a fig jam. The one thing the salad didn't have was any dressing, which I thought was really odd. There was no sense of any type of vinegar to offset all the sweetness of the pecans, the fig jam, and the cherries. The salad would definitely need some type of dressing. The arugula seems like it was possibly tossed an extra-virgin olive oil ,but again no acid. The grilled chicken breast was dry and like cardboard. It almost seemed like it was a pre-cooked grilled chicken breast that was purchased not grilled in house. I would not recommend the salad as is. Our waitress made the initial mistake about the wrong soup. But did a very good job after that and apologized for the mistake. The decor of the restaurant is very historic and has a warm and comfortable feeling in the restaurant. This was the first nice Saturday as far as weather is concerned that we've had in months. The restaurant was really busy. As was historic Smithville it seemed like everybody came out of the woodwork to get out of the house. The funniest thing is a week before we had 20 inches of snow on Sunday night going into Monday. I believe the food just misses the Mark because of attention to detail. Like a soup should always be served Hot. There's no excuses. Especially a soup that you're known for that you take the extra step of having a beautiful pewter bowl to serve it in and then it comes out not hot. Hence the attention to detail. And a salad should always have some type of dressing. Every other salad listed on the menu had a dressing listed or choice of dressing this one had nothing listed and I didn't notice it when I ordered. I would definitely go back, but I would be much more specific when I order and when I read the menu. For such a beautiful restaurant, you would think that the food would be on par with the first rate atmosphere. It definitely misses the MARK. read more

Terrible. Have been there dozens of times and first time ever had a real bad experience. Happy Hour was crowded and was told by staff we could order at bar and sit at table. Bartender said No and then when I nicely asked the manager (Believe his name was Russell) his suggestion was to go somewhere else like Fred and Ethels or Social. After a long winter and dealing with health issues hubby and I decided to treat ourselves to our favorite Smithville Inn on Saturday 3/14 we accept no reservations by the window The hostess Madison informed us we could not have a table because by the window, it was reserved for "Special Regular"customer who is also a sponsor. She could've just said this table is not available and left it instead. I did tell her how we do visit the Smithvillle Inn regularly, but that didn't seem to phase her I felt that we did not get the hospitality that normally we do get at the Smithvillle Inn. Everyone seem to cater to that one table all evening. Madison should not be a hostess. She'd be better off in the kitchen washing dishes because she certainly did not make us feel welcome at our favorite restaurant that we visit very frequently read more

Proceeded to charge me full price for a meal I didn't eat. Management called the next day and said they were going to send me a gift card and apologize for me not being happy with my dinner.
